Scooters are bucking the credit crunch as people look for economical transport and Sachs have given their SX1 a facelift for Summer 2008 to make it even more attractive.

Updates for Summer ’08 include a powerful and progressive 190mm wavy disc brake on the front alloy tri-spoke wheel. Keith Amor enjoyed an excellent debut at the Kells road races on Sunday and the Falkirk ace was able to claim both of the Supersport 600cc races after hard fought battles with Ryan Farquhar. He also took second place in the two Open races and he left the Crossakiel circuit with a whole clutch of silverware that included the Man of the Meeting and Best Newcomer accolades.

Having been forced to miss the previous weekend's Walderstown meeting due to a virus, Keith was keen to make amends and he did so immediately, just pipping Farquhar to the line in the 600cc Championship race on the Wilson Craig Honda. In the following Open race, there was again only fractions between the pair and, on this occasion, it was Keith who had to settle for second, just 0.8seconds adrift.

The non-Championship 600cc saw the two rivals again go head to head but it was Keith who came out on top at the end of the 8 laps for his second win of the day but such was the closeness of the race, there was only 0.097seconds between the dicing duo at the chequered flag. In the Grand Final, Keith, again on board the Phoenix Motorcycles Superstock Honda, took his second runner-up spot but he did have the consolation of setting the fastest lap of the day at 111.736mph.

After picking up his Man of the Meeting award, a delighted Keith said:

'Without doubt, this has been one of the most enjoyable day's racing I've ever had. The atmosphere was electric and the fans were unbelieveable, I've never seen anything like it - simply superb. The organisers put on a great meeting and couldn't do enough for me, so it's been a pleasure to be here.'

'Having missed the racing at Walderstown, I concentrated on getting fit for this one and the racing's been some of the toughest ever. There was nothing between Ryan and myself in any of the races and sometimes we were practically touching over the jumps - at 150mph! It was close but good, clean racing and you know Ryan will never do anything untoward so the pair of us gave it our all on every single lap!'

'We had a good bit of banter between the races and, like I say, it's been a terrific meeting and although I would have liked to have got the big bike wins, I can't be too greedy! The Dunlop boys were over again so it was great to repay them with some top class results and the Phoenix Honda again proved itself out on the roads so thanks to everyone for their support once more.'

Keith will now make his way to the Faugheen road races, with race day taking place on Sunday July 27th.

Weekend plans:

Plan to head to Akibahara after work to get an R4.  A device for the nintendo ds. I already have a supercard, but selling that to a coworker.

Heading to Yokohama for a HUGE fireworks festival.  Monday is "marine day" in Japan so its a 3 day weekend!!!

The one that was written off was a lovely blue Thunderace.

He'd had it from new, getting it on his birthday* in 1998. It wasn't for his birthday, it was just a coincidence that he got it that day.

It replaced his first, black, Thunderace that was stolen a month after we met.

He likes Thunderaces and they have a comfortable pillion for me to sit on. At a party recently our friend, Dave, said he was selling his. He and Rik had talks and emails and on Saturday morning the bike became Rik's third Thunderace. It's not new, but we know the previous owner well and know were it's been - to the same parties as us and the previous bike:

Understandably, he was a little nervous when he took it out on Sunday (we were going straight out on the Saturday) but all went well. He is a happy bunny again :-)

*I have a photograph of him, taken on that birthday in 1998, with his bike. I took it to Boots to have an enlargement made. When I went to collect the photographs the assistant comment on how shiny the bike was. 'It was brand new that day' I told her, 'and it was his birthday'.
'Was it his 18th?' she asked, 'is he your son?'

JAKARTA, RABU - Pengendara sepeda motor nopol B 6382 PJM menabrak seorang penyeberang jalan di jalur busway di Jalan Daan Mogot Km 12, tepatnya di depan Sekolah Harapan Jaya arah timur, Rabu (9/7) pagi.

Informasi dari Aiptu Sukatna, operator piket Polres Jakarta Barat, akibat kecelakaan itu penyeberang, yang diketahui bernama Raden Muhammad Soleh (70) dengan alamat BBK Tangsi RT 05/06 Cihamen, Bandung, tewas.

Kejadian berawal ketika pengendara sepeda motor melaju dengan kecepatan tinggi yang melalui jalur busway. Tiba-tiba korban menyeberang dan tertabrak di TKP. Hingga kini pelaku, Suparman, beralamat di KP Duri RT 05/01Semanan, Kalideres, dan kendaraan sepeda motor masih diamankan petugas Laka dan ditangani unit laka Polres Jakarta Barat.

Power is from the Transalp’s 680cc V-Twin driving the rear wheel through the HFT.
The Auto box offers three modes, full auto, sports-auto or thumb operated six speed manual transmission and all modes are lag free according to Honda’s presser.

Honda’s combined ABS is utilised on the DN-01 and there’s an oxygen sensor in the catalyser to manage the air/fuel mixture meaning emision are below EURO-3 regulations.

If you fancy a test drive on a DN-01 I suspect you might struggle – according to the presser the machine has limited availability in the UK this year.

The biggest surprise, for me anyway is the price, £9,200 is a lot of money for something like this and there are plenty of less expensive options.

((12:51am) My thoughts turn to food. Selection at the Vancouver airport around 1am is limited to vending machines. I'd love a bowl of pho right about now....

When she found Mei (named after the melt-at-the-knees cutiepie toddler from Tonari no Totoro/My Neighbour Totoro), her little Corolle doll with the braids underneath a blanket, she wrapped her up in an Octopus slash Lucha Libre slash Pride/UFC hug to end all hugs.

'My Mei! You were hiding! [squeezes even harder] Oh, my Mei!'

When I served her some Vegemite toast — minus any attempt to be creative with the shape, she clutched one aloft, Excalibur-like, and squealed:

'I love that yummy toast!'

And getting dressed? Previously, I'd had point-blank — double-barreled point blank, actually — refusal to wear a certain long-sleeved Tee that her Unky Robby had bought her. It's a grey marle comfy cotton Tee with a print of a Chimpanzee riding a low-rider motorbike on the front, which Unky Robby, given his penchant for motorbikes and apes, had selected and bought himself with glee. But this morning, well! I slipped it on while she was watching some morning TV, so she didn't notice right away. When she did, upstairs, playing with Mei on her bead frame while I put away some washing, she was overcome with excitement:

'I love that wonderful and special t-shirt with a monkey riding a motey-cycle with a helmet on top. I am very glad of Unky Robby for that t-shirt.'

The Monday morning love fest didn't stop with lunch, which was some leftovers of her 'favourite and best' (thanks, Charlie and Lola, for this phrase) meal, stir-fry noodles (which, along with sushi, pizza and chocolate, represent a holy quartet of food for her):

'Yum. I love these noodles. They are my favourite and my best.'

It's only stopped now because she started to get ratty and I put her to bed.

At least she was happy to go to sleep in her own bed today, unlike last week, when a conjoined toy barrel tube was her lime-tree bower. Look closely. There is a chuppy inside.

A 11-year old school girl on her way home from a cycling proficiency test lost her balance and fell into the path of a car.   The vehicle ran over her arm, shoulder and head but, amazingly, she escaped with just cuts and bruises.

As you can see from the image above, the helmet took the brunt of the force.

I can see no better reason for people, young or old, to wear a helmet. I mean, if that's what the car did to the helmet, then imagine what it would have done to her head if she didn't wear one. A horrific image, to say the least!!

I think it's time this government of ours did something good and pass a law that everyone riding a bicycle needs to wear a helmet. Just the same as if you are riding a motorbike, those riding bicycles should wear a helmet too.

Animal lovers, never fear. Squirrels, I discovered, can take care of themselves! Inches before impact, the squirrel flipped to his feet. He was standing on his hind legs and facing my oncoming Valkyrie with steadfast resolve in his little beady eyes. His mouth opened, and at the last possible second, he screamed and leapt! I am pretty sure the scream was squirrel for, "Banzai!" or maybe, "Die you gravy-sucking, heathen scum!" The leap was nothing short of spectacular ... as he shot straight up, flew over my windshield, and impacted me squarely in the chest. Instantly, he set upon me. If I did not know better, I would have sworn he brought 20 of his little buddies along for the attack. Snarling, hissing, and tearing at my clothes, he was a frenzy of activity. As I was dressed only in a light t-shirt, summer riding gloves, and jeans this was a bit of a cause for concern.

This furry little tornado was doing some damage! Picture a large man on a huge black and chrome cruiser, dressed in jeans, a t-shirt, and leather gloves, puttering at maybe 25 mph down a quiet residential street, and in the fight of his life with a squirrel. And losing... I grabbed for him with my left hand. After a few misses, I finally managed to snag his tail. With all my strength, I flung the evil rodent off to the left of the bike, almost running into the right curb as I recoiled from the throw. That should have done it. The matter should have ended right there. It really should have. The squirrel could have sailed into one of the pristinely kept yards and gone on about his business, and I could have headed home. No one would have been the wiser.

But this was no ordinary squirrel. This was not even an ordinary pissed-off squirrel. This was an EVIL MUTANT ATTACK SQUIRREL OF DEATH! Somehow he caught my gloved finger with one of his little hands and, with the force of the throw, swung around and with a resounding thump and an amazing impact, he landed squarely on my back and resumed his rather anti-social and extremely distracting activities. He also managed to take my left glove with him! The situation was not improved. Not improved at all. His attacks were continuing, and now I could not reach him.

I was startled to say the least. The combination of the force of the throw, only having one hand (the throttle hand) on the handlebars, and my jerking back unfortunately put a healthy twist through my right hand and into the throttle. A healthy twist on the throttle of a Valkyrie can only have one result. Torque. This is what the Valkyrie is made for, and she is very, very good at it. The engine roared and the front wheel left the pavement. The squirrel screamed in anger. The Valkyrie screamed in ecstasy. I screamed in ... well ... I just plain screamed. Now picture a large man on a huge black and chrome cruiser, dressed in jeans, a slightly squirrel-torn-t-shirt, wearing only one leather glove, and roaring at maybe 50 mph and rapidly accelerating down a quiet residential street on one wheel and with a demonic squirrel on his back. The man and the squirrel are both screaming bloody murder.

With the sudden acceleration I was forced to put my other hand back on the handlebars and try to get control of the bike. This was leaving the mutant squirrel to his own devices, but I really did not want to crash into somebody's tree, house, or parked car. Also, I had not yet figured out how to release the throttle ... my brain was just simply overloaded. I did manage to mash the back brake, but it had little effect against the massive power of the big cruiser. About this time the squirrel decided that I was not paying sufficient attention to this very serious battle (maybe he is an evil mutant NAZI attack squirrel of death), and he came around my neck and got INSIDE my full-face helmet with me. As the faceplate closed partway, he began hissing in my face. I am quite sure my screaming changed intensity. It had little effect on the squirrel, however. The RPMs on The Dragon maxed out (since I was not bothering with shifting at the moment) so her front end started to drop. Now picture a large man on a huge black and chrome cruiser, dressed in jeans, a very raggedly-torn t-shirt, wearing only one leather glove, roaring at probably 80 mph, still on one wheel, with a large puffy squirrel's tail sticking out of the mostly closed full-face helmet. By now the screams are probably getting a little hoarse. Finally I got the upper hand ... I managed to grab his tail again, pulled him out of my helmet, and slung him to the left as hard as I could. This time it worked ... sort-of. Spectacularly sort-of ... so to speak.

Picture a new scene. You are a cop. You and your partner have pulled off on a quiet residential street and parked with your windows down to do some paperwork. Suddenly, a large man on a huge black and chrome cruiser, dressed in jeans, a torn t-shirt flapping in the breeze, and wearing only one leather glove, moving at probably 80 mph on one wheel, and screaming bloody murder roars by and with all his strength throws a live squirrel grenade directly into your police car. I heard screams. They weren't mine...

I managed to get the big motorcycle under control and dropped the front wheel to the ground. I then used maximum braking and skidded to a stop in a cloud of tire smoke at the stop sign of a busy cross street. I would have returned to fess up (and to get my glove back). I really would have. Really. Except for two things. First, the cops did not seem interested or the slightest bit concerned about me at the moment. When I looked back, the doors on both sides of the patrol car were flung wide open. The cop from the passenger side was on his back, doing a crab walk into somebody's front yard, quickly moving away from the car. The cop who had been in the driver's seat was standing in the street and was aiming a riot shotgun at his own police car. So the cops were not interested in me. They often insist to "let the professionals handle it" anyway.

That was one thing. The other? Well, I could clearly see shredded and flying pieces of foam and upholstery from the back seat. But I could also swear I saw the squirrel in the back window, shaking his little fist at me, shooting me the finger ... That is one dangerous squirrel. And now he has a patrol car. A somewhat shredded patrol car ... but it was all his.

I took a deep breath, turned on my turn signal, made a gentle right turn off of Brice Street, and sedately left the neighbourhood. I decided it was best to just buy myself a new pair of gloves. And some band-aids.
