Next week I scheduled in training time focused on gaining “MCTS .NET 2.0 web
dev”.

I started to investigate what the differences are between the 2.0 exams and the
3.5 versions. Here is what I have discovered (sharing it because everyone I’ve
asked haven’t had any ideas about the 3.5 certs)

They stripped out the old 3 ‘silos’ that the MCTS 2.0 exams had

* MCTS: .NET 2.0 Web apps

* MCTS: .NET 2.0 Windows apps

* MCTS: .NET 2.0 Distributed apps

and replaced it with a number of certifications that focus on a technology area.

The .NET 3.5 certifications are listed here. The first 3 with prep guides will
be released late March, with the others being released later on.

* MCTS: Windows Presentation Foundation 70-502 prep guide

* MCTS: Windows Communication Foundation 70-503 Prep guide

* MCTS: Windows Workflow 70-504 Prep guide

* MCTS: ADO.NET 70-561 Prep guide

* MCTS: ASP.NET. 3.5 70-562 Prep guide

* MCTS: Windows forms 70-505

All of these .NET 3.5 certifications still have this requirement

* MCTS: .NET 2.0 App development foundation 70-536 Prep guide

Which means you can work towards any of the 3.5 certifications right now. And if
you currently have a MCTS 2.0 certification then you already have passed that
requirement.

They will have “upgrade exams” from
MCTS certifications
to 3.5, but full details haven’t been decided yet. But it is suggested that the
upgrade exams will ONLY cover the differences.

I know it’s a bit early, but in North America we have an autumn holiday tenderly
called “Turkey

I know it’s a bit early, but in North America we have an autumn holiday tenderly
called “Turkey Day.” This is a time where friends and family put aside
differences and distances to share a large feast together in the pretense of
harmony. The event usually revolves around the traditional meat of turkey, and
the carving ceremony in my family has always been a moment of great anticipation
and even greater contention.

So, sitting down at the .NET certification table, you might be wondering what
happened to the big MCSD/MCAD turkey. Back in the day, the MCSD/MCAD
certification represented a master developer, a jack-of-all-trades. So if you
wanted a developer certification beyond the MCP, you had to eat the whole MCSD/MCAD
turkey, even if you were just a Windows developer or only developed ASP Web
sites; you had to eat both dark and white meat, leg and drumstick - everything.

With the introduction of the .NET Framework, the situation became even more
complicated. Developing a Windows application became very similar to harnessing
Web power, but you had to know everything about both to get the MCSD. The MCAD
certification attempted to alleviate the pressure, but it was never as
successful a certification as the MCSD.

So for the last few years Microsoft Learning has been busy carving the
certification turkey, trying to spread the slices across a much wider spectrum
of Microsoft technologies. We’ve entered a new age of smaller, more
technology-specific certifications, so that there’s a little bit of
certification for everyone to share. Rather than the MCSD and MCAD designation,
there are now the TS (Technology Specialist) and PD (Professional Developer)
designations.

So how is the certification table currently laid out? Something like this (click
the image for a larger version):

NETCertification

The TS exams represent a basic proficiency in specific technology domains. Each
exam comes in at least two flavors: VB.NET or C#. Before you go too far over to
the dark meat, all candidates for Microsoft .NET certification must pass the
070-536 exam. If you use ASP.NET 2.0, you would also take the 070-528 exam (.NET
Framework 2.0 Web applications). If you use ASP.NET 3.5, you would also take the
070-562 exam (.NET Framework 3.5 ASP.NET Applications). There are also TS exams
for BizTalk, Windows SharePoint Services, and most other Microsoft products.

Once you clear the preliminaries, then you can put it all together by taking PD
exams. These certifications focus on applying the technologies to real-world
scenarios. You might know code, but do you understand the team environment and
the phases of software development? There are only three exams in this category:
Windows Developer, Web Developer, and Enterprise Application Developer, each for
.NET 2.0 and Visual Studio 2005.

The exams themselves contain a lot more code, more best practices from the
Microsoft Solution and Agile Frameworks, and have a lot less configuration and
property trivia. So, the exam you take will be honed in on the technology you
use with the language you know. Seems a lot more digestible, doesn’t it?

So, seriously, no MCSD anymore? Well… not by name, per se. The MCPD: Enterprise
Application Developer is now the jack-of-all-trades certification, much like the
old MCSD. To get this certification, you need to get through all the .NET 2.0 TS
certifications and then pass the 070-549 exams.

Of course, if you have your MCSD/MCAD certification, then you could take an
upgrade path, but that may be a longer meal than most can handle. And I think
the tryptophan is kicking in, so I may need to sleep before posting on that
topic anytime soon. (But if you want an appetizer, here’s an hors d’oeuvre from
the horse’s mouth.)

But before I doze off, remember this: The new .NET certification isn’t for
marathon competitive eaters anymore. Take your time and savor the certification
in each bite.

To my dear darling, congratulation! He has just passed one of his Microsoft Certification paper last Sunday. This is his second papers since he started taking the exam, Microsoft Certified Technical Specialist: Windows Server 2008 Application Infrastructure.

He was so worried beforehand and I saw him studying real hard for the exam. I accompanied him to his exams all the time, just to show my support as a loving wife. Haha! At least, all well ends well. He passed with quite high marks, I would say. I'm very proud of him. All his hard work pays off. He said he will continue to take another paper but probably take some time before he does. I hope not that soon. Every time I see him study so hard, I'm feeling guilty cause I would be watching TV while he studies. Hehe! And I should have studied together with him but I never did. Too lazy. Power of the TV is so strong. Hahaha!

· Exam 70-561 TS: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5, ADO.NET Application Development (NEW!)

· Exam 70-562 TS: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5, ASP.NET Application Development (NEW!)

These exams, along with the three Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) exams that released in April (Exam 70-502, 70-503, 70-504), make it possible for you to verify your deep technical skills in key Visual Studio 2008 technologies. Passing any of these five exams earns credit toward a corresponding MCTS certification. You must also pass Exam 70-536 TS: Microsoft .NET Framework, Application Development Foundation <http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9328048> in order to complete the requirements for the certification.

SQL Server 2008 exams are scheduled to start coming out in September (subject to change based on actual exam release date). Please look forward to another notification and savings voucher at that time.

I just came across this message from Milwaukee County Supervisor Patricia Jursik's office. This proposition is laudable. It's exactly the sort of move the County needs to take if it wants to save itself and its citizens from future years of gridlock amid ever-higher gas prices. I have an appointment on Monday morning, but urge friends of transit to attend the hearing and speak in favor of the motion.

Hello Transit Friends:

At a Special Meeting on Monday, July 21, at 10 a.m., the Milwaukee County Board's Committee on Transportation, Public Works and Transit will consider a resolution to reduce bus fares, certain passes and tickets, and paratransit for the month of August ;

Item 2. A resolution by Supervisor Borkowski, authorizing and directing the Managing Director of the Milwaukee County Transit System to reduce Adult Cash fares to $1.00, Half Fare to $.50, Adult Passes to $8.50, Half Fare Tickets to $5.00, Premium Cash Fare to $1.75, Premium Tickets $14.50 and Paratransit to $2.00 for the month of August 2008 to provide relief from high gas prices and encourage transit usage within Milwaukee County. (Recommendation: Refer to County Board staff for a detailed analysis of the effects this will have on the overall County Budget.) [Link to PDF.]

This proposal could encourage riders to increase their frequency and introduce new people to the bus while reducing car trips and pollution. Imagine investing $1 to ride our great Route 15 and other routes in August!

Alexis

Legislative Assistant to Supervisor Patricia Jursik, Milwaukee County's 8th District
www.county.milwaukee.gov/Jursik

Update July 21: It seemed strange that I was agreeing with something Borkowski said. My gut reaction to this, aside from it being necessary, was to wonder how it would be paid for. (Amazingly, I do not blog every one of my thoughts.) Sure enough, the plan was "sidelined today on a 5-0 vote by the Milwaukee County Board's transportation committee." [JSO] It's going to be very hard to pay for without a small sales tax increase.

I need to set some personal objectives for the next six months and I've been considering working towards the Microsoft MCITP SQL Server: Business Intelligence certification.

This requires that I pass two exams:

70-445: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Business Intelligence – Implementation and Maintenance

70-446 exam: Designing a Business Intelligence Infrastructure by Using Microsoft SQL Server 2005

Passing the 70-445 gives you the MCTS SQL Server BI certification. Passing the 70-446 gives you the MCITP. The 70-445 is a prerequisite to the 70-446.

According to the latest MCP figures, there aren't that many MCITP BI developers out there, so this may be a challenge I'll take on.

From the company perspective, it will be a big plus as it will earn them their third competency - Business Intelligence, and will enhance our Microsoft Gold Partner status. Hitting this milestone should also yield a good bonus at the end of the year! On a personal level, it will allow me to build on my existing BusinessObjects and Performance Point Server skills and pick up more of the Microsoft BI toolset.

I've worked with Microsoft SQL Server a great deal and am currently playing around with SQL Server 2008. I've also used most of the Microsoft BI tools as well; SSIS, SSAS (for cubes) and SSRS. Having looked through the exam preparation guides, I think I can clear these two exams in the next few months.

I don't think I'll take any formal classroom based training for these exams. I'd rather use my training budget on something else, possibly Crystal Reports or BusinessObjects Data Integrator. Hence, I'll be using the MS book MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-445): Microsoft® SQL Server™ 2005 Business Intelligence—Implementation and Maintenance to get me going.

Once this is out of the way, I might start looking at Sharepoint, and portals in general.

I've just completed the Microsoft 70-536 exam, and... I passed!! Passing score was 700, I was able to answer and guess my way to 858!! (I think they're out of approx. 1000).

I must say that I was dissappointed with the quality of the MS Press Self-Training book - there were many errors in the text and on the CD-ROM (including within the practice exams) that were not covered by the 50 or so pages of errata on the MS website, and the book did not cover all areas (in sufficient detail) to enable a passing mark.

That being said, it was enough to put me on the right track. A few years of experience with .NET 2.0 didn't hurt, and the rest is just down to studying the MSDN site and doing as many practice exams from as many sources as possible (they all focus on different areas).

For me, I'm taking a few weeks off from study to finish a few odd jobs around the house, then I'll probably be on to the .NET 3.5 WPF exam (whatever number that is...)

Last week at the Tech Ed 2008 Conference in Orlando, FL, all the buzz was about Microsoft's new SharePoint Server 2007. In short, SharePoint Server 2007 is an enterprise management tool organizations can use to facilitate collaboration, content management, implement business processes, and supply access to information that is essential to organizational goals and processes. One of the great features is that companies can use it to deploy behind the firewall Social Media platforms to facilitate communications and collaboration.

At the date of this publishing, only approximately 6,400 professionals have achieved the MCTS SharePoint Server 2007, Configuring certification to date. Yesterday, I read an article in Redmond Developer reporting a serious shortfall of talented SharePoint developers. My husband, an IT recruiter for a large, national staffing firm agrees with that assessment.

Want to brush up your skills with one of the hottest new technologies and make yourself more employable? Get certified in SharePoint Server 2007! It's a single exam certification for achieving your MCTS.

I got about 4 hours sleep last night. Thanks, Round Earth Society! Some days I yearn for a flat earth, where we can all exist in the same time zone. For one, it would save on jetlag - not that I've ever suffered from that (or flown over more than 4 timezones, but that's a story for another day).

Microsoft hosted a LiveMeeting Cram 4 Exams session last night dealing with my flavour of the month, 70-536. At least, it was last night here (12:30am - 1:30am), while Trika and the mob enjoyed a wonderful morning (7:30am - 8:30am the day before) at TechEd.

Of course, I could have just waited for the recording of the session to be released tomorrow, but there's nothing quite like being there... virtually, at least...
