This is probably my favorite song bar none. It made me a fan of Marillion, and a huge, huge fan of Fish's lyrics. It's a tad long, but please enjoy... Script for a Jester's Tear.

Marillion ma już w swojej historii niestandardowe działania przy wykorzystaniu Internetu. W 2000 roku muzycy rozesłali e-maile do swoich fanów, prosząc o wpłaty, które umożliwiłyby nagranie płyty. Odzew fanów był natychmiastowy, w ciągu trzech tygodni udało się uzbierać prawie sto tysięcy funtów.

For those not familiar with their work, this is a great way to sample some of the best music of the 80's.

They've been compared to early Genesis, King Crimson and every other progressive rock band you can think of; but they were (and still are)their own creature. I heard about them from a roommate, and I was an instant fan. While I don't care for some of the more recent work, preferring Fish's solo stuff much more, what's packed into the 6 CD's represents the best of the best. L'utente può lasciarsi tentare: in cambio di un indirizzo email che verrà utilizzato per informare il fan delle ultime novità, potrà accaparrarsi una traccia gratuita e priva di alcuna protezione DRM.

"Non incoraggiamo il file sharing illegale, ma è un fatto che molti appassionati di musica lo pratichino - ha spiegato Mark Kelly, tastierista della band - Vogliamo sapere chi sono i nostri fan che fanno file sharing. In class last year, we were all a-tizzy with Radiohead's revolutionary new strategy that allowed their fans to download their new album for whatever price they liked (including "free").  We discussed the idea that perhaps this was the music industry's new "loss leader" -- i.e. music, that would be subsidized by concert/swag revenues, and undying fanboy love.  This also speaks to Long Tail guru Chris Anderson's new theory on "Free" being the future of business.

I will sheepishly admit to testing the theory by downloading "In Rainbows" with the intention of buying the higher-resolution files when the CD came out.  I never did (I'm still stuck on "Ok Computer" being the best album of the 90's, "In Rainbows" didn't grab me as viscerally).

But I'm such a huge fan of veteran UK group Marillion, that last winter, I actually forked over $60 in advance for the deluxe version of their album "Happiness is the Road", which doesn't come out until the end of next month!  Marillion came up with this wonderful approach years ago: having fans finance their music rather than being tied to a dinosaur record company.  Now they've rewarded that loyalty by e-mailing me last night.  Not only could I download the MP3's of the entire album for free now, but they would also permit it being legally file-shared!  Here's what the band said:

By joining forces with a company called Music Glue we have decided to update the old “beat the bootleggers” approach and leak the album ourselves - but with a twist. Music Glue are able to add a little gizmo to the music files that allows us to 'talk' to the people that are downloading it through file-sharing networks. If existing fans are downloading our music for free, or new fans are discovering our music through file-sharing, at least we will be able to point them in the right direction if they want to buy THE REAL THING from us.

This is a wonderfully refreshing approach, and it proves that it's not just for mega-musicians like Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails that can afford to give away their creative work for free.  Marillion have embraced a major negative as an opportunity:

...Mark Meharry, founder of Music Glue, which is working with Marillion to put their album on peer-to-peer sites, said: "Fans that acquire music via peer-to-peer networks have been treated as thieves by the global recording industry.

"From a commercial point of view, peer-to-peer provides access to more fans, on a global scale, than ever thought possible via traditional distribution methods."

As a non-contracted artist, Marillion have amazing freedom to do with their music what they will.  A few years ago, I e-mailed them directly to see how much it would cost me to use one of their tracks for my documentary, "Independent America." Not only did their business manager respond immediately to my query, she gave me permission to use "Don't Hurt Yourself" for free.  Presently, they're running a make-a-video-for-us contest with a $10,000 cash prize.  Such is the growing power of the user/producer as traditional media continues to lose its death grip over content.  Such are the amazing possibilities for new business models with digital media and communication.

p.s. One listen in, and I will declare "Happiness is the Road" to be excellent.

They may be very convicted of this opinion, but they are wrong. I love them quite a bit. I saw them live while you were still in diapers. (Thank you Jesus for a long, full life.) They are not, however, the greatest.

Marillion.

They took their name from 'The Silmarillion' by J.R.R. Tolkien.  That alone ought to send the fantasy readers, geeks and Mrs. Martin rushing to iTunes. They started off quite prog and jazz, writing sprawling epic songs in the nature of early Peter Gabriel era Genesis. They made a 35 minute song on the life of Grendel, he-monster of Beowulf fame. They have since refined their taste and mood, and create some of the most moving music ever recorded.

I discovered them in 1983, while trying to deal with my parent's ugly divorce and MUCH uglier re-marriages. The frontman (Fish) wrote an entire album dealing with his failure as a husband. It pulled me through and I have been a fan ever since.

Qué tipo de video? Bueno, puede ser absolutamente de lo que vos quieras - no queremos limitar tus opciones sugiriendo algo. Solo haz algo que TU quieras hacer: divertido, interesante, serio, misterioso... pero algo que TODOS puedan ver. Luego subelo a YouTube y espera ser el elegido.

Este comentário sobre o disco mais recente de uma das minhas bandas preferidas sai bastante atrasado, e a estas horas tudo que é trocadilho com o título deste álbum já deve ter sido feito. Mas o fato é que a banda realmente devia estar com a cabeça em outro lugar quando resolveu lançar este cd. Eu já comentei com alguém ou escrevi em algum outro lugar (opa!) que este deve ser o disco mais curto do Marillion, já que, pelo menos para mim, ele acaba já na metade da primeira música (que ironicamente se chama The Other Half). A "outra metade" da música até não é ruim, mas a transição entre as duas não faz justiça à capacidade de Steve Rothery e Cia.

A partir daí o disco se torna extremamente monótono, e a produção a cargo de Michael Hunter em nada ajuda a salvar algumas poucas boas idéias, espalhadas aqui e ali, executadas de maneira bastante preguiçosa e apagada.

Com alguma boa vontade ainda dá para dizer que a faixa título se salva no meio do marasmo (marasmo este quebrado pela barulhenta Most Toys, quarta faixa do disquinho e talvez a pior música já gravada sob a insígnia do Marillion).

É realmente muito pouco para quem lançou o excelente Marbles em 2004, álbum duplo que parecia ter recolocado a banda nos trilhos, após alguns discos que dividiram os fãs.

E continuando o post anterior, sobre o mesmo assunto: ouvi a tal faixa disponível para download (Whatever is Wrong With You?), e mesmo sendo uma versão editada, já me soa um pouco (mas só um pouco) melhor do que quase tudo que apareceu no Somewhere Else – o que não quer dizer muita coisa. Em contrapartida, outros trechos do próximo disco já anunciado pela banda (Happiness is the Road, que também será duplo) e disponibilizados através de seu site não são lá muito animadores.

Espero que o Marillion desta vez não fique com a cabeça em "outro lugar" e que "o que quer que esteja errado" com a banda, volte ao lugar certo já neste próximo lançamento...

The Papa George Band has built up a solid reputation in its own right, and their recent CD brought in some fine comments, from both live playing for BBC Radio 2 and also at many gigs… “The first song was an upbeat shuffle, from the new CD, “DOWN AT THE STATION” – the very apt “Man With The Blues”. Papa George is a true picture of the man with the blues, with his pinstriped suit and Strat in hand, bringing in next, the favourite, “Blackjack”. His guitar sound is what a Fender Stratocaster is all about. He made it sing on, “Cleansin’ My Soul”, a new soulful blues number."

The tools of his trade are Fender Stratocasters, Flying Finn Guitars, an Amistar Reso-phonic Stager (specially commissioned by Resound, UK) and National Reso-phonic steel guitars. Papa George’s solo version of his self-penned “Broken Mirror” (“Being Free…ain’t no crime” PG – Solo CD) was selected for the “Artists in Resonance” CD, which forms part of the National Reso-phonic Guitars 2003/4 catalogue. Two songs (from “DOWN AT THE STATION” PGB) have attracted recognition: “Blues With A Feeling” was used as part of the soundtrack of “World Without Waves”, which won the Milagro Award for Best South-West Film, at the 2004 Santa Fe Film Festival and “Moonshadows On Coconut Grove” was included on a compilation album, “A Place Called Hawaii 3”, which won an Hawaiian Music Award for Best Compilation Album.

Go ProgRock with Magenta, Kingston

When Rob Reed released Revolutions in 2001 under the banner Magenta little did he realise that he had started something that would take on a life of its own. Revolutions was a huge success, and this led to clamourings for a live show, so, in characteristically meticulous fashion, Rob put together a band built around his keyboards and the exceptional voive of Christina Booth.

The band played some prestigious festivals in those early days, including Progeny in London, and Bajaprog in Mexico. 2004 saw all the early promise come to fruition with the released of the acclaimed second album Seven, a live double album and their first foray into the singles market with two well-received EPs, "Broken" and "I'm Alive", not to mention some remarkable live performances, culminating in The Classic Rock Societies Best Live Band award. 2005 saw the release of The gathering live DVD, a headline appearance at the Rosfest festival in the USA and more yet more awards. The bands reputation continued to increase as an entertaining, dynamic live act, with fans travelling to UK gigs from as far away as Italy, Russia, Hungary, Peru, USA, Canada and New Zealand.

The long awaited third studio album Home was released in 2006 to worldwide acclaim, with live concerts following in Portugal and Holland. In September, the band played in front of it's largest crowd yet, as 4000 witnessed them support Roger Hodgson in Belgium 2007 saw the band moving forward yet again, signing with Tigermoth Records at the beginning of the year. The single “Speechless”, released in March, made a dent in the UK singles chart, and all the band’s EPs were re-recorded and gathered together as “The Singles” in April.

The band also played live in Barcelona, Spain with IQ at the Tiana Festival and made another trip to the USA, this time at Nearfest in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. After a short break, the band played some highly successful live dates at the end of the year, one of which – at the Point in Cardiff - was taped for a live DVD for release in 2008. 2008 has already seen the band pick up Best band and best Female singer at the Classic Rock Society awards, and with the new album Metamorphosis due in April, the future continues to look very bright for Magenta – the true colour of Progressive Rock.

Materialet är tyngre än tidigare, vilket får mig att återkomma till frågan om varför vi är en trio? Bassist Thomas lämnade oss/vi lämnade honom när vi alla insåg att vi inte vill riktigt samma sak längre. Han som kom med i bandet då vi var Bellybutton och spelade renodlat Crowded House-pop tyckte nu att det hade blivit lite väl stora förändringar i stilen. Det tycker vi också, med skillnad att vi gillar förändringen :) Så inget ont mellan oss, men det fick bli så här. Och trion har känt sig ensam i jakt på ny bassist i några månader nu.

Tyngre material ja, samtidigt som detta schizofrena band har känt lite grann att vi ändå ska ta ett steg tillbaka gällande just... tyngden. Inte tillbaka till det som var förutom, utan förhoppningsvis tillbaka och sen en vänstersväng till något annat. Tre covers kommer repas in och testas med på nästa rep; Stone Temple Pilots - "Interstate Love Song", Radiohead - "High and Dry" samt Marillion - "Afraid of Sunlight". Hur detta går återstår att se, och inte ens säkert att någon av dessa kommer spelas live. Men dom finns där, och är till för att vi ska prova oss fram lite och har färdiga produkter att spela.

Samtidigt rullar det på me låtskrivande trots distansförhållandet som Lava lever med nu. Jag, nyss flyttad till Göteborg dyker upp i Jönköping nån gång varannan vecka ungefär varav vi numera siktar på mindre frekventa men desto längre rep. Fördel och nackdel, men vi tror det blir bra. Mycket energi som sparas till varje session. Lava Engine lurar under ytan, vill vi tro :) Förhoppningsvis blir det ett antal live-spelningar till hösten här nu, samt en ny och fräsch demo då. Men redan sikte på ytterligare nytt material finns vilket såklart kommer att spelas in framöver också.

Har ni bläddrat i era gamla skivor på sistone? Jag råkade damma av Peter Gabriels "So" från 1992. Tänk vad tiden gått snabbt; jag minns ännu videon till "Steam" med den svarthårige PG som gungade med fotomodellerna i ångbastun. Numera är det lite si och så med hans hårväxt på huvudet...

Men det som verkligen får skivan att kännas som ett vingslag från det förflutna är raderna på näst sista sidan i den medföljande boken med sångtexterna:

Så skriver man väl knappast i sångtexthäftena i dagens CD-skivor. Numera är det ju en web-adress som gäller. Så slipper Peter Gabriel lägga ner reklamblad i de vändande förfrankerade breven från fansen. På webben finns väl all information man kan tänka sig vilja ha om honom.

En artist som verkligen fattat hur viktig webben är för (marknadsföringen av) hans musik är Marillions forne sångare Fish som regelbundet publicerar sina personligt skrivna e-postmeddelanden till fansen (E-mail from Fish på www.the-company.com). Där håller han sina skivköpare uppdaterade om golvläggningsarbeten i studion, semesterplanerna med nya flickvännen, trummisens nya bebis, varför det tog slut med flickvännen, etc etc. Och ibland lyckas han mellan varven spela in en och annan skiva, vilket han också rapporterar om.

Fast jag tror inte att Fish heller besvärar sig med SAE:n längre. Välkommen till 2000-talet där allt går via vajd-vörd-väbb.

Consistirá de 2 CDs separados (más detalles en www.marillion.com/preorder). El Volumen 1 esta subtitulado "Essence" y el Volumen 2 "The Hard Shoulder".

"Essence" (Volumen 1) esta evolucionando hasta el momento en un viaje temático, mientras que Volumen 2 es más una colleción de canciones discretas. La grabación continua siendo brillante y los nuevos temas que escribimos han "noqueado" a las pocas personas a las cuales se las hemos mostrado.
