I think a large portion of the American---and possibly worldwide---population is bitterly lamenting the lack of Gmail's push capabilities with the iPhone. Gmail was quirky with the BlackBerry too, but in different ways. With the BlackBerry, if I set Gmail up with POP instead of IMAP, the Berry got messages before they showed up on my computer. IMAP...took a while. The iPhone is the same with IMAP. I have the iPhone set to poll hourly for Gmail, but there are other forces at work, because my Gmail arrives on the iPhone anywhere from before it lands in my inbox to 20 minutes later. Nevertheless, the freaking iPhone is supposed to be all about freaking push, so I felt geekishly compelled to ferret out a way to have "Gmail push" on the darn thing. Solutions abound on forums all over the Web, but most end up with "use a forwarding service" (most of which you have to pay for). No thanks. Here is how to do it. It assumes you are using Mobile Me and Mail.app in addition to Gmail.

Go to Mail.app's preferences pane and select your Mobile Me account. Change the e-mail address to your gmail address, and change the SMTP server to the gmail SMTP server. Through mystical means (see next step), this allows you to, in effect, use the Mobile Me account on your iPhone as though it's actually your Gmail account ("Reply" will let you reply from Gmail and not Mobile Me).

Create the mystical means: open your Mobile Me preferences pane and make sure your two Mail options are selected. Check the box for mail syncing in iTunes as well, just for good measure. I'm actually not sure which one does the job, and my dedication for testing ends right here (if you know, leave a comment).

Log into Gmail on the Web, and create a filter: "From: **". Pick "Skip the Inbox," "Mark as read," "Apply label" (I chose "Forwarded mail," but whatever works), and "Forward to" (fill in your Mobile Me address). This forwards all your Gmail messages to your Mobile Me Inbox but removes them from theGmail Inbox so you don't end up with two copies of everything in your Mail.app inbox. I wouldn't want to actually trust Mobile Me with KEEPING my e-mails since they evidently randomly lose people's e-mail.

On the iPhone, set up your Mobile Me account however you want it. Either don't bother with the Gmail account or inactivate it. No reason to be polling for mail that you have just instructed NOT to appear in your Inbox.

That's it. E-mails sent to your Gmail account will be "pushed" (in scare quotes because...sometimes they are, and sometimes they aren't) to your iPhone through Mobile Me. They will show up in Mail.app's Inbox, where they can be filed into Gmail IMAP folders just as if they'd arrived via Gmail's inbox, and if you get squirrely and think you missed something, you've got your "Forwarded mail" folder with all the mails that have been sent to Mobile Me. Easy enough to empty it from time to time.

This is a helluva kludge and unworthy of both Apple and Google. Freaking Yahoo! has even got this figured out, for heaven's sake. Having satisfied my geek side that it could be done, I undid it all and am just using Gmail IMAP on my iPhone. It gets there fast enough, and if I'm sitting at my laptop the "push" means I have to delete and deal with stuff twice more often than not because Mobile Me doesn't reliably mark iPhone e-mails as read after I read them on my Mac. (This "feature" is a Big Pain in the Butt, although the effect is the same as getting e-mail pushed through POP to my BlackBerry.) But I felt I should post my findings anyway given that I pieced this solution together myself and therefore don't know if it's already out there somewhere (I couldn't find it despite wasting hours of my life that I will never get back!).

From today's mail bag:

What is the preferred way to delete an email account under Apple Mail (mail included with Tiger) without erasing all the email messages associated with the account? I know by default Apple Mail wants to delete all the messages associated with that account, which really throws us PC consultants off who are used to doing this under Outlook. I imagine there are several approaches to this, I am curious what seems to be the easiest.

[sourcecode language="php"]

set date_dialog to display dialog "Inserisci l'oggetto" default answer ""
set the_subject to text returned of date_dialog

tell application "Address Book"
set name_list to every person of group "Liberamente"

    set email_value_list to {}

    repeat with p in name_list

set end of email_value_list to value of every email of p

    end repeat

end tell

tell application "Mail"
activate

    set new_message to make new outgoing message with properties {subject:the_subject, visible:true}

    tell new_message
repeat with i from 1 to (count email_value_list)

repeat with j from 1 to (count item i of email_value_list)
make new to recipient with properties {address:item j of item i of email_value_list}
end repeat

        end repeat

    end tell

end tell

[/sourcecode]

Vediamo in breve come funziona.

Il primi due righi di codice

set date_dialog to display dialog "Inserisci l'oggetto" default answer ""
set the_subject to text returned of date_dialog

[sourcecode language="php"]
tell application "Address Book"
set name_list to every person of group "Liberamente"

	set email_value_list to {}

	repeat with p in name_list

set end of email_value_list to value of every email of p

	end repeat

end tell
[/sourcecode]

set new_message to make new outgoing message with properties {subject:the_subject, visible:true}
.

An investigation began last year when an anonymous letter was sent to police claiming human remains, linked to events 35 years ago, were buried there.

Leslie Ford-Thrussell, 72, lived at the house in Walton Green, Croydon, for 17 years until he was jailed in 2004.

He was not the tenant at the time of the alleged events.

A police spokeswoman confirmed excavations had begun but said she could not estimate how long the operation would take.

Scaffolding and polythene, as high as the house, has been erected around the garden and a gazebo covers the area officers are excavating.

Unsigned letter

Ford-Thrussell is currently serving a 12-year jail term for sex crimes committed against children, aged 13 and under, from 1986 to 2003.

Among the offences were rape, indecent assault, gross indecency with a child and taking and making obscene images.

Last week, officers carried out a search of the garden at the council-owned property on the New Addington estate.

The unsigned letter was sent to former residents of the house who are not connected to the investigation.

The house has been empty since the last tenants moved out about three months ago.

Police said a number of factors had prevented them from acting on the letter sooner, including the length of time it took to identify the author.

No-one, including Ford-Thrussell or the letter's author, has been interviewed about the investigation.

Detectives have reviewed missing person files from 35 years ago, the time of events mentioned in the letter, he added.

They are also investigating whether Ford-Thrussell had any links with the property before he moved in.

Viel Erfolg!

Sichert euer vorhandenes Thunderbird-Profil (üblicherweise [user directory]/Library/Thunderbird).

On my italian blog one of the post which, over the time, is receiving more hits via search engines is the one about how to migrate your e-mails Microsoft Outlook to Mail.app (alias the default one included in the Mac OS X package).

Generally speaking I am seeing many "switchers" tryng the Outlook --> Entourage transition, probably because they believe the look and feel of the application will be the same. Unfortunately - for them - that isn't the case. Also, the Entourage in Office:mac 20004 edition has proven to be one of the most problematic and crashing piece of software I had the chance to run in my first generation MacBook.

So, how to behave when you're uncomfortable with Entourage and want to move to some other e-mail client?

Banally the answer comes from this tip from MacOSXhints.

Click on the Folder list in the left-hand pane and drop it onto your desktop; this will export the folder in the popular mbox format.

Real simple and indeed really "apple style" in the use of the drag & drop paradigm, isnt' that so ?

{All of this post because if you try the export function in Entourage you will end up with a "closed source" and "proprietary" file cointaining your e-mails.}

Getting back into blogging today I would like to tell you about a script that aims to improve the e-mail label management of Apple's built in e-mail client Mail.app.

On the far away :-D july 2006 I had the possibility to follow an advanced course of Mac OS X in the classrooms of the Politecnico di Bari realized by the Campus Satellitare del Salento with the participations of the professor Franco Tommasi (link) and his staff, which counted my pal Paolo Portaluri.

Paolo {*}, in those last two years has become on of my top 2 Apple consultant, proving to be reliable, precise, always insightful and helping a lot!

At the time, howerever, our friendship was borning and I think one of the seeds was my question to him on how to have colored labels in Mail.app.

Since the beginning of my use of e-mail clients I had become used, thanks to Eudora first and Thunderbird now, to label with a name and a color some of e-mails present in my mailboxes.

Red for "important" e-mail, blue for the "link" containing one, green for e-mail containing addresses, purple for "humor" messages. You got the idea, I hope!

So Paolo told me that the application itself wasn't giving me any option in that direction but that probably, using a simple AppleScript, he could give me a solution to the problem.

And so he did! And later on published the code in this post on the Apple's themed TEVAC forum. One of the biggest italian resources on Cupertino's stuff.

So what follows now is a traslation of the procedure and a modding of the script to my liking!

First you have to launch the Script Editor given with each copy of OS X.

The Script Editor application, located in /Applications/AppleScript, is a useful tool for working with Apple events. If your application is scriptable, you can use Script Editor to write and execute scripts that target your application, resulting in Apple events being sent to the application.

You will copy the following AppleScript and save it on your desktop with a name, personally I've used the labeler-mailapp.scpt name.

Here's the code:

using terms from application "Mail"
on perform mail action with messages selectedMsgs
-- let's choose the colors
set chosenColor to item 1 of (choose from list {"Link", "Gray", "Address", "Interesting", "Humor", "Important", "Yellow", "None"})
if chosenColor is equal to "Link" then
set color to blue
else if chosenColor is equal to "Gray" then
set color to gray
else if chosenColor is equal to "Address" then
set color to green
else if chosenColor is equal to "Interesting" then
set color to orange
else if chosenColor is equal to "Humor" then
set color to purple
else if chosenColor is equal to "Important" then
set color to red
else if chosenColor is equal to "Yellow" then
set color to yellow
else if chosenColor is equal to "None" then
set color to none
end if
tell application "Mail"
set selCount to (count of selectedMsgs)
if selCount is equal to 0 then
display dialog "NO SELECTED MESSAGE!" buttons {"OK"} default button 1 with icon stop
else
repeat with counter from 1 to selCount
set msg to item counter of selectedMsgs
-- apply the color
set background color of msg to color
end repeat
end if
end tell
end perform mail action with messages
end using terms from
-- If run as an ordinary script, instead of directly from the Scripts
-- menu, it will call the default handler instead.
using terms from application "Mail"
on run
tell application "Mail" to set sel to selection
tell me to perform mail action with messages (sel)
end run
end using terms from

Saved? All OK?

Now let's copy the scpt file into the ~/Library/Scripts/Applications/Mail/ directory (even if I now have it placed and working into ~/Library/Scripts/Applications/Mail Scripts).

Two more steps to go!

We have to lauch the Applescript Utility on your Mac and enable the "Script menu in to the menu bar", this will show you a "paper" into the menu bar ... please forgive the bad translation but I hope that the image here will show you what I mean.

Now we launch Mail.app, select the particular e-mail we want to label, click on the "paper" above and choose the voice "labeler-mailapp" and we'll have a new window from where to choose the label/color intended.

That's it!

Now a curiosity, if you reinstall your Mac and do not reinstall the script your e-mails will store the previously given color.

Cheers!

I love RSS (Really Simple Syndication), plain and simple. To explain RSS really easily, it basically collects posts from a blog and collects them in a list that is easily viewable - like an email. I find it very handy because I enjoy reading up on the latest tech, but I'd rather not visit all of those sites in my browser - so instead I use my RSS aggregator, which sorts them into neat little folders for me. OS X has some great RSS aggregators [Wikipedia article] such as its own Mail.app, NetNewsWire and Vienna (my personal favorite). Also, pretty much every modern web browser supports RSS feeds such as Internet Explorer, Safari and Flock. If for some reason, you don't have the option to or would rather not use one of the built-in RSS aggregators in the browsers, I would recommended Google Reader. The RSS aggregator I use for Windows is Windows Live Mail, simply because I liked the user interface and how it mixes with MSN as well. To subscribe to my website via RSS, either click the RSS button in your search bar at the top of your browser or add http://techblogger08.wordpress.com/feed/ to your list of subscribed RSS feeds.

assuming you have installer.app - update it
install:
openbsd
community sources (if not already)
openssh

open up putty and put the ip address in, click on open

you'll have to wait around 30 seconds for the key to be generated, when it is and the certifcate prompt comes up say yes
login as: root

type in the password: its either dottie or alpine depending on which version of iphone you have

[sourcecode language="php"]

tell application "GrowlHelperApp"
set the allNotificationsList to {"Mail", "Junk Mail"}
set the enabledNotificationsList to {"Mail", "Junk Mail"}
register as application "Growl Mail Rule" all notifications allNotificationsList ¬
default notifications enabledNotificationsList ¬
icon of application "Mail.app"
end tell

using terms from application "Mail"
on perform mail action with messages _messages
repeat with _message in _messages
set _sender to sender of _message
set _subject to subject of _message
set _summary to paragraphs 1 thru 4 of (content of _message)
set tid to AppleScript's text item delimiters
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to return
set _summary to _summary as text
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to tid
if junk mail status of _message is true then
set type to "Junk Mail"

			else
set type to "Mail"
end if
tell application "GrowlHelperApp" to notify with name type ¬
title type description ¬
"From: " & _sender & return & "Subject: " & _subject ¬
& return & return & _summary ¬
application name "Growl Mail Rule"
end repeat
end perform mail action with messages
end using terms from

[/sourcecode]

Has anyone noticed how much Mail hangs with Leopard? I have three imap accounts, and somehow Google just hangs, constantly circling around as if downloading new msgs. And if I say "delete" this msg, and move to read my .Mac msgs, it reappears when I return! The synchronization of the imap account with Google is so slow that I have to wait a minute or so for it talk to Google and delete.

The odd thing is that it's not completely incapacitated when it hangs...only hanging to emails coming in and going out. I can still read msgs, but I have to quit to send something out or get new ones. When it does hang I can't just say Quit; I have to Force Quit. This is annoying and I hope that 10.5.2 fixes it.

Any suggestions or fixes for this?

Not 100% sure, but I think this comes from http://applerepo.com, so try adding that as a source in Installer. iJailbreak also has some info on this and another source, sleepers.net/iphonerepo.

I've long thought that the complexities of the Windows world were, in part, exaggerated by Apple users and their media (I've even been guilty of it myself), but I'm here to tell you now, it's worse than everyone's ever thought.

I'm now in charge of the company's website. I relaunched it in the middle of last year and when faced with the complete rewrite that was needed, I decided that the best approach was a Content Management System (CMS) for the website so that anyone with a basic grasp of computers could update it. I certainly don't have time to administer the website using Dreamweaver, so the plan was to buy in a CMS so that the less web-ware members of my staff could update the site in my absence.

The journey through this has been a difficult one with various problems too numerous to mention, except one. One that has shown me that the complexities of the Windows world are not exaggerated.

At the heart of the website is a registration system that allows a web-user to fill in a standard html form, upload a couple of graphics and then submit this to a choice of a dozen or so destinations. In the background this submission is then uploaded to a centrally stored database, and then automatically emailed to 1 of 10 users of the system. Once received, these users then contact the web-user and process their registration.

Except it doesn't work. In fact in the 10 months or so since the website launched, it's never worked.Of course, actually finding this out was an arduous task in itself.

Suffice to say after tracking the problem it appears it boils down to this: The web-users form is received centrally, perfectly. It's when this form is emailed through my company's webserver, we have a problem. It just never gets there. Doesn't even register as spam, it just doesn't arrive.

Changing the destination to a '@googlemail.com' domain - it works fine.

It's something to do with the website's backend software communicating to our email server, they just don't get along. Of course the one set of Windows users (who run the back-end website software for us), blame the other set of Windows users (who run our email server). I have the envious task of arranging a meeting between these 2 groups to hammer out a solution.

In the meantime, I, a lowly Mac-user, not versed in the intricate voodoo of email systems, has come up with a solution. All submissions from the website go to a '@googlemail.com' email address, I set up for this purpose. They then come through to Apple Mail, where a Apple Mail set of rules, then examines the email, determines which destination it's meant for and then forwards it on. This works fine.

But why doesn't it one Windows based email system, work with another? It seems to me that these 'experts' haven't a clue, at a low-level, how Windows actually works, and that is a scary thought, and it has taken a single G5 Mac and Apple Mail, to sort out the problem (at least in the short term).
