Ah, my laptop still hasn't been shipped back to geek squad, and its still being repaired. I'm not complaining I hope they keep it intill they can either figure out what is wrong with it or give me a new one, I just really hate using this old computer, my laptop is much much faster.

El juego es al estilo Smash Bros. es decir, cuatro personajes en una pantalla peleando, la única diferencia es que aquí las gráficas son en 2D y que para matar a tu enemigo tienes que saltarle encima o con los items que te dan los cuadros, El juego es muy divertido, pero es mas divertido jugar con tus amigos, pueden jugar los cuatro desde la misma PC el problema seria como acomodarse, jejeje, y si tienes algún joystick puedes jugar con el, yo tengo uno y no me da ningún problema.

Hay varios modos de juegos como:

Clásico: Matar a los demás.
Captura la Bandera: Roba la bandera de tus enemigos y llévala a tu zona.
Gallina: El que dure mas tiempo convertido en gallina gana, tus enemigos tienen que tratar de matarte y
si lo logran, ellos serán la gallina.
Carreras: Hay cuatro blocks volando por todo el mapa y tu tienes tocarlos en orden hasta llegar al
ultimo y acompletar la carrera, si alguien te mata pierdes los bloques que ahigas tocado y tienes
que tocarlos todos de nuevo.
Estrella Negra: Este modo es como el juego de pasar la bomba antes de que se acabe el tiempo, solo
que aquí es una estrella negra que se la tienes que tirar a tus enemigos y librarte de
ella, cuando se acabe el tiempo, el que se quede con la estrella perderá.

I’ve been incessantly researching Macbook Pros since about February and been saving since

 January to buy one.  Rumors abound on the Internet that Apple will be releasing a new Macbook Pro either this summer or this fall, though both are relatively soon considering they just released one in February. 

The rumors come from speculation based on the fact that Apple did little to change the appearance of the Macbook Pro.  I believe they also added multi-touch to the trackpad and I know they gave gave it a speed boost (2.1 GHz to 2.4 at baseline).  From what I saw, they are supposedly going to integrate the new iMac with the Macbook Air, meaning it will have black trimmings and be a little slimmer.  

In other words, it will be freakin’sweet-looking.

My original plan had been to buy the new Macbook Pro this past week upon completion of the school year, primarily because that would set me up for a good financial balance once I shelled out two grand for that bad boy.  

Then, upon hearing the rumors, I shifted my plan into waiting it out.  No need to rush, I figured.  

Right, that lasted long.

After talking with a couple of friends in Greenville and Katie, I decided to go ahead and buy my new Macbook Pro today - which is what I am typing this on right now.  And let me tell you, it’s worth every penny.  

The portability combined with power basically pays for itself to start out with.  I’ve never really used or seen such a light yet fast computer, especially with such an incredibly sleek feel.  

My old PC was and will remain a quality machine, don’t get me wrong.  But the sheer simplicity of Mac overwhelms the complexity of the PC.  

Sure, there are a couple of things here and there that slightly bug me about the Mac.  And I just fixed one of them - the screen was looking a little dim and I thought the luminosity was all the way up, but just realized it, in fact, was not.  

So the main irritation is the sharp-ish edges.  When lying on a couch and typing, it does tend to dig into my wrists somewhat, but that’s something I can work around.

My score:  a 4.75 cool points out of 5.  It’s having a couple of hiccups here and there, mainly such as not being able to video chat with Katie on iChat, but I’m sure that’s more Operator Error than anything else.

The Apple employee at Best Buy made a couple of good points it’d be good for other Mac-purchase-contemplaters to consider:  1) Even if they do release a new version, it’ll only be a minor speed update and perhaps a shell casing change, so you’d be fine to go ahead and buy the current version.  And 2) If you really want it now and don’t feel like waiting, go ahead and buy it.  If they do release a new version, sell yours on eBay - somebody WILL buy it - and then buy the new release.  You might lose a couple hundred bucks in the transition, but if it’s that important to you to have a new design, then that’s a viable option.

I’m not sure yet if I am going to install Office ’08 on it or iWork ’08.  I have Office ’04 on my PC, which I can still use if need be, and iWork is way cheaper.  Or I’ll just get both.  Hm, decisions decisions.  I’m working with the free trial version of iWork for now to see if I like it enough to risk an investment in it, and so far it’s just kind of okay.  Seems a bit less capable than Office, but I’m sure that as I learn to work with it, it can be just as good.

 

NOTE:  iChat still refuses to work right with Katie, which naturally makes me a little upset.  And the fact that I went from 6 hours 45 minutes of battery life to 2:45 in a 45-minute span but yeah, I dunno.

 

Mild frustration, but I suppose it is to be expected in purchasing new technology.  Nothing made by a human being can realistically be expected to operate perfectly.  

 

Am I a Mac user or a PC user? Take a wild guess.

Do you know anyone who loves Windows? Me either. I've been using it for two decades, and the frustrations are as big and fresh now as they were more than 20 years ago. We have been told and sold Bigger! Faster! Richer features! blah, blah, blah. But you'll still probably have to restart several times a week (or a couple of times a day). Make sure you can close the browser. If the computer won't allow you to close the browser by the usual means, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE (if you're using Microsoft Windows) and end the browser process from the Task Manager.

20 years later, and we don't have a reliable way to close a browser. Meanwhile, the program still sits on top of that piece of crap DOS.

When Microsoft releases a new version of software, I know I'm going to get hosed. All that time and effort invested in learning, say, MS Office will be out the window(s). In marketing terms, I get to make a fresh start. In reality, the latest products come at the expense of my productivity. Functions get regrouped in even less intuitive ways than before; simple operations (like saving a file) seem to disappear; old functions are given new names; features are touted that have been in the software for years; bells and whistles triumph over essential functions like stability. And by the way, you may need to upgrade your equipment in order to run the new behemoths.

Having repeated this cycle again and again, I've learned that every release of a Microsoft product is a beta. That makes customers beta testers. Purchase the products at full price, then find dozens or hundreds of bugs as we attempt to use them. MS might or might not fix the bugs. Remember the old "joke" about AT&T: "We don't care. We don't have to." Ah ha ha. Meanwhile, Microsoft (with $52 billion in the bank as of Feb 08 ) scans the horizons for takeover targets. "Yoo hoo - over here. I'm a customer. Remember me? Could I get some help? Hello?"

I work with a longtime Mac user. It's tantalizing to see the ease with which she manages to do dozens of things at once while I'm hacking away on a PC. She says that her Mac works like her brain. Inconceivable! No PC user is going to make an outlandish claim like that. But PCs still dominate the market, so she has to use one. What a burn.

Apart from these considerations, isn't it great to be part of the wonderful world of PCs and Windows?

Sering dengar kalimat semacam kalimat di atas? Anda tergugah karenanya? Sabar dulu bung.. Jangan  terburu-buru.

Memang terlalu keji jika saya bilang kalimat itu (dan kalimat sejenis lainnya) adalah suatu kebohongan. Mungkin tepatnya adalah “kekurang akuratan”. Tetapi saya pribadi, setelah mengetahui kenyataannya seperti merasa dibohongi. Karena kenyataannya tidak seperti yang saya bayangkan.

Saya sudah beberapa kali mengikuti seminar migrasi ke Linux, dan seringkali mendengar kalimat seperti itu. Itulah salah satu alasan mengapa saya bersemangat terus belajar Linux pada awal - awal saya mengenal Linux. Karena diakui atau tidak, Linux memang lebih sulit dioperasikan (akui sajalah..). Tetapi begitu mendengar kalimat di atas, saya berpikir “Perusahaan besar saja berani mengambil resiko sulitnya pengoperasian Linux yang mungkin saja mengganggu bisnis mereka. Mengapa saya tidak berani mulai meninggalkan sistem operasi yang bajakan?”

Tetapi fakta berikut inilah yang tidak disebutkan oleh para pembicara dalam seminar - seminar itu : Perusahaan - perusahaan besar seperti A, B, C, X dan Y, serta kampus - kampus besar di Indonesia memang secara besar - besaran memigrasikan sistem operasi mereka ke Linux. Tetapi itu hanya terjadi pada SERVER mereka. Tidak demikian dengan WORKSTATION nya (komputer yang digunakan untuk pekerjaan sehari - hari [desktop]). Memang ada beberapa perusahaan dan kampus yang juga menggunakan Linux pada komputer desktop mereka. Tetapi jumlahnya (di Indonesia) tidak signifikan.

Mungkin hal ini jugalah yang seringkali menyebabkan gagalnya penetrasi penggunaan sistem operasi Linux di Indonesia. Calon pengguna baru digembar - gemborkan dengan banyaknya perusahaan besar yang memigrasikan sistem operasinya ke Linux. Tetapi mereka tidak diberitahu bahwa perusahaan itu memigrasikan servernya, bukan desktopnya. Sementara calon pengguna baru ini 100% adalah pengguna desktop, bukan sys admin, sys engineer, network admin, dll.

Satu hal lagi yang _sangat_ mengecewakan saya setiap kali mengikuti seminar dan diskusi tentang Linux. Mereka yang diundang sebagai pembicara, ataupun nara sumber ahli seringkali menyampaikan presentasinya tidak menggunakan Linux, ataupun software yang open source.

Bagaimana mereka bisa meyakinkan user (pengguna desktop), untuk bermigrasi ke Linux dan opensource, sementara untuk hal yang kecil dan sederhana saja mereka tidak bisa (tidak mau) melakukannya di Linux. (Membuat presentasi di OpenOffice tidak sesulit memindahkan aplikasi C# ke Mono kan?). Padahal mereka yang diundang jadi pembicara, atau nara sumber ini berasal dari perusahaan IT kelas nasional, internasional, akademisi dari kampus terkemuka dan juga kalangan elit pemerintah.

Saya “usulkan” kepada anda - anda yang mungkin diminta jadi pembicara ataupun nara sumber tentang migrasi ke Linux : Sebelum anda berbicara, pastikan dulu diri anda sendiri sudah mau bermigrasi ke Linux !! Cukup saya saja yang kecewa.

Tras el éxito cosechado con la entrada ¿Por qué comprar un Mac? me decido a hacer otra pero en sentido contrario con las cosas que me fastidian o molestan del sistema operativo de la manzana.

1. Empecemos por el principio, ¿a alguien le gusta el tacháaaaan que retumba nada más encender el ordenador? Puede parecer increíble, pero no es posible configurar o eliminar el sonidito desde el panel de preferencias. No obstante, pese a no ser la forma más ortodoxa, sí es posible silenciarlo gracias a aplicaciones de terceros. Por cierto, se trata de un inconveniente extensible a otros muchos sistemas operativos...

2. Otro problemilla que podría encontrarse un recién aterrizado en Mac OS y también más de un veterano son los "botones semáforo" para cerrar, minimizar y maximizar ventanas porque... no cumplen esa función. La bolita roja ⊗ normalmente oculta la ventana (no cierra la aplicación), la amarilla minimiza y la verde ⊕ no maximiza. Generalmente, al pulsarla, la ventana se adapta a su exacto contenido (al parecer lo más productivo), que no siempre es ocupando toda la pantalla, como esperaría un recién llegado de Window.

El asunto se agudiza porque cada aplicación puede asignar un comportamiento distinto a estos botones generando inconsistencias que puede volver loco a más de uno. En ocasiones, el rojo, por ejemplo, sí cierra  una aplicación (aMule, Google Earth...) y el verde es... como una caja de bombones: puede sorprenderte maximizando la ventana a modo Windows o cambiando a modo "minireproductor" como así ocurre en iTunes. En fin, que solo la experiencia lo arregla... o los superútiles atajos de teclado.

3. Apple es por definición minimalista, el iPod o iPhone no tienen botones, el iMac no tiene torre y los teclados de los portátiles de Apple... no tienen tecla suprimir (Del o Supr). Únicamente vienen de serie con la tecla backspace o retroceso ← (que elimina el carácter anterior a la posición del cursor). La solución: o acostumbrarse a usar la combinación fn+backspace para surpimir, o remapear el teclado con utilidades como DoubleCommand.

4. Más complicaciones, sobretodo si proviene uno de Windows, es que el Finder (gestor de archivos de Mac) no permite Cortar y Pegar archivos (sí texto entre aplicaciones). En Mac hay que necesariamente arrastrar el elemento hacia la ubicación pretendida. En caso de estar dentro de un árbol de carpetas, basta con dirigirse hacia la carpeta principal y esperar un segundo o pulsar barra espaciadora, entonces ésta se abrirá con su contenido (apertura con resorte), y así sucesivamente hasta encontrar la ubicación final.

Si lo que se pretende es mover el fichero basta con soltar, si se quiere pegar (dejando una copia en la ubicación original) se presiona 'alt' y aparecerá un icono con una bolita verde y un '+' que nos indicará que vamos a hacer una copia. En ocasiones, por defecto copia en lugar de mover. Ocurre esto al copiar un archivo de un volumen (partición) a otro o a una memoria USB, etc.

De forma que no es posible mover archivos desde el menú edición vía cortar/pegar. Una alternativa, muy aconsejable puede ser aprender a manejar Quicksilver... pero eso es otro asunto que requeriría más de dos o tres posts dedicados a la herramienta nº1 para exprimir Mac OS al máximo de productividad y eficiencia.

5. También hay que considerar como una carencia fácilmente subsanable que Mac no venga de serie con un desinstalador de aplicaciones, pues aunque casi siempre sea suficiente arrastrar a la papelera, es posible que estemos acumulando pequeños ficheros de configuración de los programas borradas. La solución: recurrir a programas como AppZapper "The uninstaller Apple forgot" o soluciones gratuitas como AppCleaner.

6. Del mismo modo, Mac, y en esto creo que llevan mucha ventaja las distribuciones Linux, no tiene un actualizador de software (sí oficial para aplicaciones de Apple pero no para las de terceros). Hay, de todas formas, recursos para todos los gustos y además gratuitos: LogicielMac Update, AppFresh o App Update.

7. iTunes/iPhoto y alguna otra herramienta integrada en Mac OS, como contrapunto a su sencillez, tienen el gran inconveniente de pretender organizarte el disco duro y por extensión tu vida entera. Esto puede dar lugar a formas un tanto extrañas de clasificar ficheros (álbum, artista, eventos, carretes...) o duplicidad de archivos al generar bibliotecas para una mejor gestión de tus recursos (foto original, copia en iPhoto Library, sus modificaciones, ¡y las borradas!). O te acostumbras a esa específica forma de trabajar configurando la aplicación que se trate del modo que más te guste, o recurres a alternativas variadas.

8. Otra cosa que puede extrañar a un switcher y que puede considerarse tanto un inconveniente como una ventaja (cuando te das cuenta de su utilidad) es que en Mac, cuando borras un archivo de un lápiz USB, hasta que no vacías la papelera, el tamaño del fichero borrado sigue ocupando espacio en tu memoria USB, con el objeto de que puedas recuperar fácilmente el archivo borrado. El problema surge cuando extraes el lápiz sin haber vaciado previamente la papelera y te diriges a copiar en él ficheros desde otro Mac/PC y resulta que no tienes espacio libre.

9. Los omnipresentes archivos .DS_Store. Seguramente si usas solo Mac, en absoluto te molestarán porque son archivos invisibles. El inconveniente surge cuando copias una carpeta desde Mac a una unidad en red con Windows o grabas un DVD a un amigo windowsero. Estos archivos; cuya función es almacenar información sobre el orden, el tamaño, y la posición de cada icono en una carpeta concreta; sí son visibles en el resto de sistemas operativos. Algo similar nos ocurre a los que no usamos Windows con los ficheros Thumbs.db. Mi consejo es despreocuparse totalmente por ello, aunque hay remedios caseros como este o este otro.

10. Personalmente me parece muy limitadas las posibilidades de grabación de CD/DVD de serie en un Mac. Además no soporta grabación multisesión y pueden surgir problemas de compatibilidad con Windows. Todo se arregla de un plumazo con programas de la calidad de Burn o más completos como Toast Titanium.

La mayor parte de estos problemas son en realidad manías adquiridas usando otros sistemas operativos. La otra mitad demuestra que a veces en Mac OS X, el think diferent prima por encima del think easier.

Pudimos jugar un rato con el iPhone que nos trajo Luis y ver lo gran aparato que es, desde luego su manejo impresiona a cualquiera que lo use. También lo estuvimos comparando con el iPod Touch que trajo Juan, pudiendo ver las diferencias sobre todo en cuestión de peso y grosor, temas a los que pueda ser que tienda el supuesto 3G que aparezca el 9 de junio. Hemos comprobado lo fino y ligero que es el MacBook Air de Juan, que realmente impresiona una vez lo tienes en las manos y tienes la oportunidad de usarlo, y de hecho lo llevaba dentro de una carpeta para folios de tapas duras, ¡eso sí que es finura!

Por lo demás hemos compartido trucos, experiencias, algunos programas, etc..., Por lo que la experiencia ha vuelto a ser genial, además de echarnos unas buenas risas, que de eso nunca falta. Se que muchos gumeros nos han podido venir por unas razones o por otras, pero no os preocupéis porque dentro de dos semanas, el día 31 de mayo vamos a preparar la tercera, y os esperaremos allí a todos.

I haven't really wrote many things of interest here, in retrospect... and about the most exciting thing that's happened is that I've redeemed my faith in Windows (I'm an Apple dude, okay?) So, I thought I might write as to how my feelings towards it have changed.

Being an Apple junkie, I choose to rework Windows into my life by partitioning my hard disk on my MacBook and intstalling in on that partition. I didn't really do it intending to use Windows, but more so just to have the experiance of knowing how to install an OS on a disk partition. (Nerdy, eh?) I wisely decided to print the Boot Camp installation guide (Okay, if you are planning to do this, PRINT THE GUIDE. Trust me.) And I followed the prompts (The guide made it easy enough) and within a few minutes I was running Windows on my Mac. Fantastic.

I decided to put windows through it's paces, just to see if I could dispell the theory of whether Windows runs better on a Mac. By the frog, did I get a suprise...

Windows, in all honesty, runs 200% better on a Mac. I also own a rather kitted-out PC, mind you (Built up, too) and my Mac preforms better with Windows than my PC does. Games are an issue, but, if Games are you're interest, save up some more and buy a MacBook Pro and then put Windows on that. I don't think that the MacBook's graphics card was really intendid for games. but the MacBook Pro might be another story. I was able to play Age of Empire III to great effect, and I really enjoyed it. It depends on the requirements of the game, I guess. Crysis is a definate no.

I also advise after you've installed Windows you add the Boot Camp drivers to your Mac (found in one of your Mac OS X Leopard install disks) to get the full kick out of all your hardware. (By the way, the trackpad and keyboard work throughout installation, no drivers needed)

When I synced up my Wireless Mighty Mouse, I was also pleased with the great response that I got. There was no 1-second lag as I sometimes get on my PC with my other mouse. The webcam does have it's usefulness, but I'd say it's cooler in Mac OS X where you get all the cool effects in iChat.

I also ran windows with the Royale theme (which sometimes chokes RAM a little bit) and I'm happy to say I had no problems, at all. As a bonus, IE7 also seems to preform better for some reason as well.

Most people know I'm no Windows fanatic and for the most part I still don't like it very much, but, I'd say before you run off and buy a hectic R30,000 PC with shiny buttons, consider buying a Mac and putting Windows on that. :D

• Having to install and configure a decent firewall. ZoneAlarm is generally accepted as the best one out there (despite what CheckPoint have done to customer service). No more will I have to pay £19.95 ($39.95) a year to protect my PC from the outside world, and battle with the mysterious settings when things don't work as they should.
• Having to install antivirus software to tackle the almost inevitable onslaught of malicious code. NOD32 was one of the good guys in my fight against the common virus, so what can I do with the £26.99 ($52)  a year that I'll save?
• I haven't forgotten Webroot SpySweeper, a most excellent tool at trapping all sorts of spyware before it became a problem. Sorry Webroot, that's £15 ($29.95) a year you won't be getting from me.
• Taking security really seriously, Primary Response Safe Connect can spot new malicious programs simply by their behaviour, stealing a lead on any new threat before the antivirus authors have created new definitions for them. I was loaded to the gunnels in my fight against malware with this beauty at just £34.95 ($70) a year.

Damn, that's an extra £96.89 ($194) a year I now have to find a way to spend on other things. Yes I know you can save money by buying suites that combine these functions, but I always went for best of breed in each particular area to give myself the best chance of fighting off the ever present dangers of our connected world.
