De 5de editie vond plaats in de kantoren van Duval Guillaume. Als voorbeeldig stagiair (en ook uit interesse) besloot ik te helpen. Affichkes gemaakt voor de WiFi, voor spijs en drank gezorgd en tussendoor nog wat fotograaf gespeeld. Eén interessante en één mindere presentatie mogen aanschouwen, Sony's Rolly aan het werk gezien, Lotus Speculoospasta geproefd (heerlijk), enkele interessante mensen gesproken en een lift naar huis gekregen van Netlash en Gudrun. Ook Greetd vergezelde ons in de wagen.

Alweer een nieuwe ervaring. Maar als ik nogmaals wil gaan, zal dat als sacoche moeten zijn.

The list of cars ranged from Citroen, Ford, Fiat, Honda and surprisingly Lotus!  The Lotus was the one that caught my eye as you don't expect a sports car to be green.  So what exactly are it's green credentials?

The Lotus Exige 270E Tri-fuel runs on a mixture of gasoline, bioethanol and methanol.  The company is hoping to introduce the use of sustainable synthetic alcohols as fuels within 15-20 years.  It's maximum speed is 158mph which is pretty fast.  The all important CO2 output is 100g/km running on E85 bioethanol or zero emissions on sustainable synthetic methanol.  This is less than the Citroen C1 which has emissions of 109g/km.  Well done Lotus!

So what does the car look like?  Well as you can see it doesn't look any different from a regular Lotus.

Wat er onderweg is gebeurd? Véééél stil gestaan door één of andere brand in Brussel-Noord. Als je weet dat die rit amper 15 minuten duurt, snap je dat mijn humeur intussen al serieus minder was.

Vervolgens hadden Valérie en ik problemen met het vinden van de locatie. Of vind jij het normaal dat een straat aan de ene kant zus heet en aan de overkant zo? Only in Brussels ;-)

En net toen we besloten om ons verdriet te gaan 'vervreten' in de plaatselijke Quick of McDonald's, hadden we het gevonden. Na wat -héél gênant- getuur door het raam, gingen we toch naar binnen.

Meteen al overspoeld door de sponsors. Hoofdsponsor was Duval Guillaume, een reclamebureau waar ik op het werk ook al mee te maken heb gekregen. De chaos die zich gisteren bij Brussels Airlines voltrok (de hele Justine Henin-affaire) werd zelfs vernoemd door één van de sprekers. Vooral de drie flashy Senseo-apparaten trokken mijn aandacht. Later bleek dat die ook te winnen waren! In het midden van de tafel stond een enorme toren met Lotus Speculaaspasta (of was het nu speculoos?). Haast nergens meer te vinden, je kan je dus inbeelden hoe graaiende girl geeks een potje probeerden te veroveren...

Onder de aanwezigen wel enkelen herkend (al hielpen de naamkaartjes ook veel), zoals (ex-baas) Clo, ex-klasgenoot Kathleen aka Kleintje, blogsters Lamazone, Imke Dielen, Tantieris, etc... Soms leek het wel op BV-spotten!

Maar dé ster van de avond was toch wel Rolly! Dit kleine muziekrobotje van Sony heeft ieders girl geek hartje gestolen. Die lichtjes, die move'kes! Of hoe een gadget ook écht schattig kan zijn...

Conclusie: ik was blij dat ik erbij was, al had ik misschien ietsje meer van de avond verwacht... Al ligt dat waarschijnlijk aan het lange wachten in de trein. Maar volgende keer ben ik er weer bij, dat is een feit!

As montadoras e ex-equipes de Fórmula 1 Lotus e Spyker anunciaram um acordo para construírem carros de passeio em conjunto. A primeira máquina a ser feita pela parceria será o superesportivo Spyker C8 Aileron (foto).

A inglesa Lotus manteve uma equipe na Fórmula 1 até 1994 e teve entre seus pilotos Ayrton Senna, Emerson Fittipaldi e Nelson Piquet. Já a holandesa Spyker correu na categoria apenas no ano de 2007, sendo vendida para a Force India.

O acordo entre as empresas inclui o uso conjunto de plataformas (base de montagem de veículos), de peças de carros e de design e engenharia para futuros modelos da Spyker. O objetivo é reduzir os custos das montadoras ao compartilhar tecnologias.

O Spyker C8 Aileron é feito inteiramente em alumínio e possui um motor da Audi V8 de 4.2 l, com 400 cavalos de potência e um câmbio manual de seis marchas.

We are nearing the end of our 9 month journey into Anusara-land, as Anne would say. One more weekend together at the end of this month and we will have completed our 108 hours with Christina Sell. Just a couple of pix from our gathering last week. The photo of Christina was taken during our philosophy discussion and review of Carlos Pomeda's DVD series, The Wisdom of Yoga. We were discussing how we integrate our understanding of philosophy by answering these three questions:

• The "What" ~ What is it we're talking about?
• The "So what?" ~ Why do I care?

And finally ...

• The "Now What?" ~ How do I implement this?

Now check out her groovy yoga pants. I studied the design from a distance, but wasn't able to identify the graphics. So truthfully, I thought it was Scooby-Doo, and while not tied overtly to our tradition, Scooby is definitely a character of mythological proportions worthy of consideration. (Surely, you've all seen the bracelets: "What would Scooby Doo?"!) I asked Christina at the break what the design was & then promptly forgot. I think I preferred my own little "maya" and refused to take anything else in. Anyway I digress ...

As the last thing I can find about them was in '05 I'm not going to hold my breath. However, this very similar idea appeared on Yanko in 2007 designed by Matthew Swinton. Not quite as pretty perhaps, but just as surprising if you saw someone get one out.

Die Motive erzäh- len vom Leben in den Dörfern, von Menschen und vielen Tieren. Auch die Pflanzenwelt ist reichlich in den Motiven von Bildern und Schnitzereien zu finden. Diese war für mich ein Schatz an Inspiration und Motiven, die ich in eigenen Bildern verarbeiten wollte.

Wer diese Motive einmal in natura gesehen hat, wird sie nicht mehr vergessen. Es liegt ein besonderer Zauber in diesen Regionen,die so üppig mit Pflanzen und Tieren versorgt zu sein scheinen und die für uns Europäer wie das Paradies erscheinen. Doch dieses Paradies hat große Flecken, wie wir aus der jüngsten Vergangenheit wissen und die Armut der bevölkerungsreichsten Region dieser Welt scheint unbesiegbar.

Obwohl Indonesien ein durch und durch moslemisches Land ist mit buddhistischen, hinduistischen, aber auch animalistischen Glaubensgruppen, spielt der Lotus in diesem Archipel eine große Rolle. Als Symbol der Reinheit - weil die Pflanze niemals verschmutzt - werden die geschlossenen Knospen in vielen Zeremonien geopfert. Die Schönheit der geöffneten Blüte bleibt unvergeßlich. Übrigens werden die Wurzelrhizome des Lotus auch als Gemüse gegessen.

Der Lotus erscheint als Motiv in allen asiatischen Ländern. Man findet ihn auf Schnitzereien, Steinskulpturen, Gemälden und in der Textilkunst. Ganz besonders ist er mit dem Buddhismus verbunden und stellt sogar eines der 8 heiligen Gegenstände dar. Es ist das Symbol für den Lauf der Zeit.

Als Motiv für den Deckel wurde ein göttliches Liebespaar gewählt. Dies entspricht natürlich nicht den moslemischen Gepflogenheiten, die die Darstellung von Mensch und Tier verbietet. Aber wie gesagt, exisitieren durchaus auch andere Glaubensformen auf Java und den anderen indonesischen Inseln, die genügend Raum für Interpretationen lassen.

 This figure has a dragon tatt on one shoulder and arm and a lotus flower and Koi on the other.  These symbols represents the opposites of male and female. The rest... I'll let the viewer figure out.

The Lotus Flowers [荷花] in the ponds near Jhongsing Gate began blooming a couple weeks ago. Given my current work schedule, the only time I have daylight to photograph anything is before work, so 4 of the last 5 days I have dropped by the ponds to get in a few minutes of shooting before clocking in.

The ponds are on the way to work, so stopping by is really no fuss at all. Unfortunately for me, I never wake up early enough to get in more than 10 minutes of shooting per session.

On a weekday morning there are usually three to six people shooting. Today when I went I saw a dozen people there for the sole purpose of photographing, as well as a couple of families.

IBM has been working with Open Office.org to enhance their product and bring it to market. Over the last year or so, IBM has come out with 4 BETA releases of their new ODF-based office suite called Lotus Symphony. From the base code of Open Office, IBM has been developing the office suite to be easier to use and more compliant with older Microsoft formats.

I can remember using Open Office a few years back. It was good for simple documents and spreadsheets, but if you had a complex Excel sheet, or Word document with a lot of bells and whistles, they would never open in Open Office. While not "perfect", IBM has come a long way in resolving these issues with Lotus Symphony. You can now open just about any Word, Excel or Powerpoint document in Lotus Symphony.

What is Lotus Symphony? It is an Eclipse-based office suite that allows you to handle documents, spreadsheets and presentations (read Word, Excel and Powerpoint) in a sleek and simple interface. There are a number of reasons to explore Symphony:

1. It's free. Just go to http://symphony.lotus.com and download it. It is currently in BETA 4 release, but should be in final form in the Summer. Users that only need the standard documents in the office, don't need Microsoft Office and the cost that goes along with it.

2. It works across platforms such as Windows and Linux! I view this as a huge advancement for those wanting to break free of Microsoft licensing. Now, Linux users can have a full-featured office suite that's supported by IBM.

3. Symphony adheres to the Open Document Format (ODF), not a proprietary document format.

4. There is a developers toolkit that would allow experienced developers to create plug-ins for Symphony.

5. Symphony can save documents in many of the standard formats, including Microsoft formats and .pdf.

As you can see, it's a tabbed interface, so your documents, spreadsheets and presentations all live in the same interface, and you can easily jump from one to the other. The document page is showing above, and you can also see that there is a very simple and intuitive column on the right that allows for all the standard document formatting.

It's an exciting time for end-users. With the advent of Google Documents and Lotus Symphony, we now have no-cost alternatives to the pricey, but industry-standard Microsoft Office suite. Some advanced users that need MS Access or Publisher will not be able to divorce themselves from MS Office entirely, but the average office worker that just needs to read and write office documents can use Symphony with no loss of productivity or features.

Did that statement make sense?

I actually like Ford trucks and cars. They've come a long way since the Pinto, and my Ford F-350 Diesel was an awesome truck. But how many of us translate past experiences with a product to our current circumstances? How many of us used an old version of some software only to look at the new one and say "That sucks", without even trying it or knowing how it works?

Every day I run into this same kind of biased talk with regards to IBM's flagship collaboration product, Domino and Lotus Notes. If I mention to someone that I am a Lotus Notes developer and Domino administrator they usually say "I used Lotus once at a previous job, I hated it". When I ask them what version they were using, I get "I don't know, it was 7 or 8 years ago. But it still stunk and I hate Lotus Notes".

Hmmm. I wonder if IBM has done anything to Lotus Notes in the last 7 or 8 years that would make it a better product?

One thing I must admit: Microsoft does an outstanding job at marketing, but marketing does not guarantee a better product.

Nevermind that IBM has upgraded Domino/Lotus Notes from version 4.6 (when they purchased Lotus) to versions 5, 6, 6.5, 7 and 8. Or that Lotus Notes is considered the most secure email/collaboration system around.

Ignore the fact that the Domino server runs on Linux, Windows (32-bit and 64-bit), Unix and the AS/400, or that the Lotus Notes client runs on Windows, MAC and LINUX! (allowing you to leverage existing hardware instead of upgrading or purchasing new stuff)

I probably shouldn't mention licensing costs are lower and development time is much quicker in Lotus/Domino. And when I tell people about Lotus Foundations (a small business appliance), Lotus Sametime (for encrypted chat and web meetings), Lotus Quickr (for document sharing/management - think Sharepoint on steroids), Lotus connections (to allow easy collaboration between people and documents in your organization), and Lotus Symphony (a free, open-source Office suite that runs on Windows or Linux), they still turn a blind eye as they view Microsoft as their only viable alternative.

IBM has been sinking tons of money into Lotus. The products they offer are low cost, open source, secure and easy to use.

If you cringe when you hear the word Lotus, and you haven't explored the latest offerings, you will be pleasantly surprised at what you'll find.
