Artslam!: Revenge of the Superheroes took over the Limelight on August 9, and I got to be one of the artists involved. I've never done anything like that before (and I'm not much of a painter — I'm more of a Photoshopper), but it was alot of fun and I'd definitely do it again if they'll have me back.

It's a little late, but I've got pictures from the event after the jump — including my painting of The Joker from Dark Knight (R.I.P. Heath Ledger) in various stages of completion. The photo above is by Rob "Deadbeat Hero" Perez, who organized the whole event and also did a stencil-art version of The Joker that came out really cool.

On Saturday afternoon, I did a fairly tight pencil sketch (freehand, of course) that I realize doesn't look much like Heath Ledger ... but Heath Ledger didn't even look like Heath Ledger in Dark Knight. So there.

Angelle about to start painting Storm (circa 1990s X-Men).

And here we go: I blacked out the background ...

... And started working my way up to his face.

Outside, Rob "Deadbeat Hero" Perez (pictured) and ZA1U5 were spraying up in front of Limelight.

Deadbeat Hero's finished Joker piece.

ZA1US's Alex Ross Joker stencil.

My own Joker painting is starting to look halfway decent (the face is the fun part, so I saved it for last.)

I wasn't planning on adding blood to the black background, but then I thought, "No. There will be blood."

Zombie Storm in all her undead beauty.

Just as I was about to pack up, someone swooped in and offered to buy the piece if I dedicated the playing card, which I left last to finish some other time, to him and his friends. His persistence paid off, and he went home with the painting that night. I don't know if this makes me professional artist, but it might. Watch out, art world.

Photographs of a Dance Rehearsal was curated by Augusto Corrieri and presented by Camden Arts Centre. It's a durational performance when 5 professional dancers improvised “privately” inside the large Artist’s Studio at Camden Arts Centre, with no one else present to watch. Whenever a member of the public opened the door of the space and walked into the room, the action stopped; each dancer held their still position. When the viewer leaves the room, the movement-improvisation resumed.

And so passes another dorkbot gathering. Around 20-30 folks packed into the front room at officialsydney to hear from aras vaichas, pia van gelder and more.

Aras presented the WävRüta, a microcontroller-based audio effects unit that participants will be able to assemble (and solder!) at this year's electrofringe in newcastle.

Despite claiming to be too busy programming it to test the limits of the audio rooting capabilities, he did a pretty good job showing it off, in conjunction with his previous units, nibbler and brainlet.

The source code and schematics diagrams will be released free post-October, and you can probably get a circuit board by contacting him directly. The device was producing some pretty damn impressive noise and fucking with a euro dance loop quite nicely. Apparently up to 50 'effects' can be stored on it - can't wait to see and hear what effects he comes up with next.

pia van gelder presented on stereo video and showed off some early works visible through 3d glasses. Very interesting presentation, as you'd expect, and more links on the dorkbot blabber list for all us geeks. we like, we like!

We did not catch the impromptu presenter's name (Dan?) but he showed off a video pedal (similar to a guitar pedal) that was making some similar effects to the severed heads presentation we attended earlier. Yeah, clearly we have no idea about this one :-)

Another awesome evening. Drop by next time - and if you feel like showing something, even better!

This looks really interesting - experimental film-maker, vlogger and research fellow, Steven Ball, is in sydney this friday as part of a whirlwind aussie visit.

He's presenting a retrospective of his works at officialsydney from 7.30pm for a gold coin donation. Not bad for 80 minutes of short films, variously described as "digital materialist abstraction, spatial exploration, landscape studies and hyperlocal excursions."

Yep - we've got next to no idea what that means either, but officialsydney is usually on the money, so this is high on our to-do list. We imagine it'll probably be on yours, too.

Pretty fair to say that sketch the rhyme was one of our faves from the latest installment of the underbelly festival just passed.

The concept was great - five artists clustered around a table on the right, with a camera trained overhead that broadcast their sketches onto the big screen at the back, and a smaller screen facing the MCs at the front.

The MCs then engaged in a variety of 'games' - for example, a word association game where the MCs had to guess what the artists were drawing from the sketched clues, all the while freestyling over sublime beats from the phonies.

This got a great reaction from the crowd, and as with the surry hills festival earlier in the year, we were pleasantly surprised again by the quality of some of the rappers (Gabi in particular was outstanding).

Again, great concept... we want more.

inside a tent filled with artificial twilight
lead into a corridor narrow and dark enough to give a feel of a train passing through a bottle of ink

therefore

functionally placed inside a lion's cage, with the lion embodied in a slim figure of a man with black trousers and overall, who looks like slowly, but resolutely approaching me

barefoot

his face with a cropped white hair frame - a style not far from what a Roman Emperor electoral candidate's would ask his stylists for

hic sun August the August aka T

somehow

he keeps looking at me but it is a look you give a snowman made of complexionless ideas

indeed

this makes one feel very transparent

as he is getting closer I wonder if he would make it through my body in the same fashion as ghosts routinely deal with fireproof walls

it feels like it and off he goes, leaving the tent, entering the light of the day

here comes a second one, equally barefoot, but much stockier, sporting colours of pumpkins and oranges , which make every single fold of his cushion-like frame come out

up in his face topped with froggy glass solution remindnig of a chief architect of yet another solution nicknamed the final, resides a pair of eyes which, like those of his partner, make this impression of their rightful owner's soul having been fished out and sealed in a tiny flask marked "choking hazard"

his hand is cold as he grabs mine. It is a fishy handshake, more or less the same grip you can expect when introduced to a well cooked lobster. Though there is no confirming message in his eyes, he apparently likes my bag, so he takes it. Simultaneously, he snatches a chair with a girl formerly seated on it, now rushing away, just too slow, for he is even slower, slow enough to catch her handbag and making her follow him outside the tent.

that's Pumpkin aka R

Packing their chairs, the rest of the audience flows out as well.

Procession. T in the lead, then R lazily pulling his girl, then a cloud of people with chairs, giggling. On course to seek for a new stage.

Procession encamped in a park.

T and R spread around. Their walk betoking a pair of trees that has just managed to grow a pair of legs, but retain their sense of time...very, very slooooow.

they pick twigs and some of the audience, making them all dance in a circle the way you'd dance if the atmosphere consisted of mixture of vasoline and feathers

they clash, if something involving two objects meeting with a speed of a stoned snail could be classified with such a term

they clash and they entangle with tenacity of a very keen pair of lianas, merging into a single mass without the need for a meat mincer

a jogger decides to join in. He softly lands his precise body on the grass and goes for push ups delivered in a style aiming straight for divinity. With T and R busy making a panting skein out of themeselves, the three might surely get connected via a channel our brains can just dream of, unless the jogger is busy regretting nobody finds him a splendid opportunity for a youtube moment.

SPETTACOLO, says a mother, placing her two kids in front of T and R. Aware that this is a piece of theatre, the children go for LOL the moment T and R form a statue of a four-eyed god of honey.

a respectable lady of even more respectable age desperately seeks an explanation of what is this stuff all about

but nobody satisfies her

Reverse procession. Back to the tent, having fully explored the art of slowliness when making a 50 metres distance in ten minutes.

T and R petter out. The audience may need some time to regain their daily pace.

SafARI might be just about to get underway, but we didn't realise they'd be going head-to-head with another artist run initiative - quarterbred #5.

Quarterbred runs from 16-29 june at pact space in erko and showcases the works of some pretty cool local and interstate collectives.

You might have already heard they will be doing a free roller disco on saturday 28th june (byo skates) - but there's lots of other cool things happening.

We're particularly interested in Live Zine, where participants will create the content for a new zine in one evening (Tuesday 17th june, 8.00pm, $7). It's a fundraiser for a new print machine to make zine publishing accessible - very worthy cause.

TAC/TIC on Thursday 19th also looks interesting, with experimental acts onani and knitted abyss and some others. The Nextwave panel and Time is Now evening of short performance works also seem worth a look.

We're super keen to hit it again on june 14, what with the amazing meem breaking out a DJ set alongside the ELF and telafonica, among others. Update - postponed.

It's been a while since your intrepid furtivity posted up something - not for lack of events, but alas time. But we've realised we can't go on without some brief pluggy goodness for SafARI, which returns this year with a new batch of emerging, unrepresented local artists.

The ARI in SafARI stands for artist-run initiatives, which means you get to enjoy works from the 11 or so artists in the funky confines of China Heights, Gaffa and MOP Projects.

The event runs from 13th to 29th June - check it out.

While you're at it, diarise Three Teens Kill Four at China Heights on the 18th July -it might be difficult to get to with the pope in town, but it looks pretty raw, and totally cool.

thewayismadebywalking.com

thewayismadebywalking.com is the web database that houses caminante no hay camino. Along with the coloring book, this site will feature stories, audio, video, images, articles, and links to other resources on the web.

caminante no hay camino

caminante no hay camino, is a free educational coloring book that attempts to provide the framework for an ongoing- democratic narrative.

questions to consider:

We must ask ourselves: are our children currently exposed to genocide, human rights violations, and political massacres?

Ideally the answer would be no, no one child or adult should ever have to experience these conditions. However these conditions are a reality, they are not simply a part of our past that can be overlooked, they are current, they are NOW.

What about the upside? Are our children aware of the many movements and individuals who have persevered against such conditions and made major social changes?

I would say that to some degree they are. But the question then becomes, to what extent?

Perhaps it comes down to dissemination of information to young people. Without providing a proper context for the interpretation and dialogue surrounding these explicit images, the depicted incidents become far removed from our lives, and we become numb to their reality.

we should be discussing:

Who told the story and how was it covered? (Was it in a history textbook, on a news station, in a Youtube Video, on someone’s blog?)

What was their intention in bringing this story to life? Was it their personal story, did they have a specific political agenda, did they have a monetary investment exposing in said incident?

How can you help?

Over the past month I have been begun compiling a series of public and private maps, graphs, lists, audio and visual libraries- all cultural artifacts which have made (an continue to make) an imprint on my concept of self.

What I am starting to discover is that the individuals that have come into my life tend to have backgrounds and interests that are similar to my own. It not surprising that our paths have crossed. Common themes for my conversations, thus far, have included: educational theory, public health, and human rights advocacy, To continue these conversations is important to me, but I also think it could be powerful to open this discourse to wider circles.

In the spirit of free education, I am sharing my inspirations and conversations in the form of an ongoing-coloring book. The aim is to set the framework for an ongoing collaboration to create a democratic narrative. With strategic placement on the web, there are innumerable potential opportunities for contributions and connections between individuals whose paths might not otherwise cross.

History of Caminante No Hay Camino

A central tenet of critical pedagogy maintains that the classroom, curricular, school structures teachers enter are not neutral sites waiting to be shaped by educational professionals. While such professionals do possess agency, this prerogative is not completely free and independent of decisions made previously by people operating with different values and shaped by the ideologies and cultural assumptions of their historical contexts. These contexts are shaped in the same ways language and knowledge are constructed, as historical power makes particular practices seem natural—as if they could have been constructed in no other way. -Joe L. Kinchelo

There is one specific image that I have never been able to remove from my mind: an image of a Guatemalan solider pointing a gun at the belly of a young pregnant woman. Ironically, I have no recollection as to the source of that specific image. Part of me wonders if that image even existed, or if it was a confabulation of my youth, created in response to the countless stories of political massacre in Guatemala that my father would describe to me on a regular basis.

The Power of Image

Recently I attended a symposium on Architecture, Art and the Experience of Blackness, where I was greatly moved by the words of Hamza Walker, who serves as the Director of Education and Associate Curator for the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago.

In an effort to outline “blackness” or the “black experience”, Walker alluded to the profound impact of the publication of the casket-side Emmett Till photos in JET magazine.

The Till incident began with the brutal beating and murder of an 11yr old boy, whose only crime was whistling at a white woman. In a surprisingly high profile trial the two men accused were almost immediately acquitted by an all white jury. The boy’s grieving mother insisted on an open casket funeral so that the world could see what had happened to her beloved son.

Walker suggested that the media transmission of these transgressions confirmed the collective understanding shared by African Americans that this treatment was the reality of the judicial system.

She's naked in a very formal manner. Sitting at a bar stool, facing the audience, motionless, pale, her eyes indicating she might not be with us, busy chasing astral pets five dimensions above the ceiling. Hands folded neatly in her lap, feet resting on a silver frame. She blinks repeatedly, her body trembles. Silence gets dense, silence expands round the place, it pushes the air outside and glazes people's faces.

There's an elegant sound of a push table looking very surgically.Parked by a man in black, casually senior with a professional look, the table has two rows of glass flasks on board along with a tray full of napkins, a burner and a bowl containing something yet to be seen in action. The man's look is fire-proof, no emotions leaking. He takes the first flask, lights the burner and then a stick with cotton wool soaked in alcohol. He finds a spot on the woman's back, quickly puts the burning stick inside the flask and presses it against her skin. He waits, the skin in the air-free shelter makes a bulge. He withdraws his hand - the flask sits calmly on the skin. The second one hits the floor, making an alarming sound, but remaining in one piece.

In half an hour, the woman looks like wearing a very revealing costume made of light bulbs. One by one, the flasks are removed, and the man's fingers hold a scalpel. Still tight, the skin gives up the blade with little to argument. It takes a while before blood fills up the cut, creating a thin red line, a rickety trunk that grows branches with no hassle.

The flasks go back. Blood fills them lazily. The woman reminds me of a rubber tree being
tapped - no visible signs of resistance.

Flasks away. The napkins' turn.Scent of disinfection. One by one, the man picks cakes of blood. They stick to the napkins, so they can be pegged on, like washing in a propper Japanese horror movie or a series of deep-red watercolours.

My neighbour softly leans against my shoulder. She's unconscious. We
take her out, soon she's back with us, needing no more cakes.

This Saturday we've been brought in to create a triptych of canvases for G-shock's launch of the Burlington project, these will be painted live on the night!

"The Burlington Project is website that has been developed with Casio to promote new electronic music, budding artists/producers and underground club events. The website goes live in March and to celebrate this we are having the mother of all launch parties. We have enlisted some of our favourite acts to play and recruited some of London’s most animated club nights to help us host this special event.

We will be taking over Cable Street Studios on the 5th of April for what is effectively a small-scale electronic music festival. Vitalik will be hosting the event with Union DJS in room 2 and D-Late in C4. The G-Shock bus will be rocking the court yard with the size doesn’t matter boys wielding their 7 inches of fun. The courtyard will be turned into an animate visual arts canvas with live VJ’s illuminating the proceeding with the weird and the wonderful. This has all the makings of an amazing party, truly unmissable!
Last night's events in Brighton's 'Cultural Quarter' proved, if proof was needed, that the spirit of collaboration and the creative exploration of new technology is well and truly thriving. At the Lighthouse event artist Rachel Beth Egenhoefer offered an insight into her practice and recent residence at Brighton University where she has collaborated with lecturers and technicians, in disciplines as diverse at robotics and ceramics. The resultant new work includes a resin cast computer keyboard (pictured above, 2nd right) and the creation of first Wii knitting needles!

Rachel sites her Commodore 64 Computer and Fisher Price Loom as defining objects of her childhood, both of which are clear influences for the knitted representations of data (pictured above, far right) which she has also produced using a crude but effective one pixel = one stitch formula. She isn't however planning on producing Flash inspired jumpers or HTML scarfs so someone else will have to take those products to Dragons Den.

A few doors away, The Basement was by contrast host to far noisier evidence of collaborative work with the BRUSSELS MEETS BRIGHTON: the Meta-Hub pre launch event. A teaser/tester for the forthcoming London exhibition, being held at the Shunt Lounge between 30 April and the 3 May, the pre launch aim was to demonstrate the main concepts the project and included live music (pictured above, far left), live art, video mixing and a random but fantastic display of choice album covers (pictured above, 2nd left).

With a live Radio Reverb broadcast and over 200 people in attendance thrown into the meta-hub mix, there was certainly a buzz at the event which was seemingly undiminished by the general confusion about what was actually going on!?

The very sad news is that REGEN’s ReGrowth Festival has been closed down at the last minute -

The very sad news is that REGEN's ReGrowth Festival has been closed down at the last minute - and may never be able to use the site just outside of Goulburn again.

The promoters have posted a statement that says they are "completely shattered by the news from Goulburn council." And understandably so, considering all the hard work and effort that goes into putting this together.

"We had worked so hard to comply with all their wishes, had spent thousands of extra dollars to meet all [the Council's] stringent needs and now at the very last minute we are dealt with this," the organisers state.

"One year of planning, countless meetings, hours and hours and hours of work in our spare time, lots of money from our own pocket had all been invested in this event. The crew had been at site since Saturday and had put in four 16 hour days of hard work, driven by the passion of what we do, only to be told we have to pull it all down."

Worse still, the issues that have shut the festival down appear to be endemic, and likely to force it to relocate completely for the future.

"The site that we had been building for three years, and planting trees on for three years that we were looking forward to coming back to year after year to keep planting and watching past years trees mature and to keep building our special event seems now to be lost," the statement says. "It has become clear that they [the Council] simply do not want this event to happen and it now appears that one of the most beautiful festival sites in Australia has been lost."

Refunds are available to all ticket purchasers. In the meantime, parts of the event will take place on sunday at the gaelic club in surry hills, "followed by an after party". furtivity urges everyone to get down there and show your support.

Shame, Goulburn Council, shame.

It would seem that since the reinvention of haha that the humble abercrombie has become a haven for some pretty interesting events.

Enter paperwork - an "exhibition" of visual and musical artists coming up on wednesday 19th march, kicking off at 6pm.

Jefferton James, Anna Wilkenfeld, Maximillian Gosling, and A.N.P are all contributing visual works, while there is a mix of music, from drone early on through to acoustic.

A particular highlight, however, will undoubtedly be the presence of cleptoclectics, who've been rocking out the garage happenings of the bodega of late.

Gold coin donation... can't wait.
