Χτες κάποιοι έφτασαν από 1.000.000 δολάρια που μπορεί να είχαν σε μετοχές τράπεζας να βρίσκονται ξαφνικά σε μια μέρα με 40.000… </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;font-family:Verdana;">Είναι κρίση του τραπεζικού συστήματος; Είναι μια τεχνητή κρίση για να επωφεληθούν λίγοι και να γίνει ακόμα μεγαλύτερο ξεκαθάρισμα και άνοιγμα της ψαλίδας ανάμεσα στους φτωχούς και τους πλούσιους; </span></p>

Ο Morgan ήξερε πως αυτό θα προκαλούσε μαζική υστερία η οποία θα επηρέαζε και τις άλλες τράπεζες...</span></p>

<p>They both seem to never give up hope.  For an example, Lindbergh never gave up even though he was behind in the race across the Atlantic Ocean.  Phelps tried to win 8 gold medals in one Olympic game, and he did.  Both Phelps and Lindbergh tried hard and succeeded. </p>
<p>Once I read this article that a six-grader wrote.  When she was about 4, she tried to climb a cement tube in the school playground.  She kept trying, and she got to the top, which is something I tried to do but gave up.</p>
<p>If you try hard, you could do almost anything.  I want to be like Lindbergh and Phelps.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Restons sur la place de la République et <a href="http://photoculteur.wordpress.com/2008/08/24/rencontres-de-la-photographie-darles-cloitre-saint-trophime/">au sortir du Cloitre Saint Trophime</a>, dirigeons nous en face, vers l'<strong>Église Sainte Anne</strong>. C'est là que se tient l'exposition consacrée au <a href="http://www.rencontres-arles.com/ARL/C.aspx?VP3=Renderer_VPage&#38;ID=ARLP51">travail de Paolo Roversi</a>. Après Avedon, nous restons dans la continuité avec un photographe de mode célèbre.</p>
<p>Le travail de <strong>Roversi</strong>, ou plutôt ce qui en est présenté, fait la part belle au noir et blanc, même si quelques photographies couleurs sont présentées. Il est représenté par la galerie <a href="http://www.pacemacgill.com/paoloroversi-21.html">PacemacGill</a> à New York. Il reste à taille humaine dans les formats restitués et se distingue ainsi nettement du <a href="http://www.rencontres-arles.com/ARL/C.aspx?VP3=Renderer_VPage&#38;ID=ARLP48">travail de Lindbergh</a> (Peter, pas Charles) sur lequel on va revenir car lui-aussi est exposé dans une église, lui-aussi est un photographe de mode et lui aussi a passé le cap de la soixantaine et atteint la célébrité.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" src="http://www.rencontres-arles.com/DOC/ARL/Media/TRMisc/2/E/6/M/ARL757.jpg" alt="" width="567" height="375" /></p>
<p>A gauche, le travail de Roversi (Paolo Roversi, Natalia, Paris 2003) et à droite le travail de Lindbergh (Peter Lindbergh, Kristen McMenamy, Vogue France, Beauduc, France, 1990). On verra plus loin que c'est là un bon exemple de ce qui les sépare (les images proviennent du site des Rencontres).</p>
<p><span class="Lbl"><span class="Lbl"><span style="color:#33cccc;"><em></em></span></span></span>Le travail de Roversi présenté à Arles n'est pas, dans l'ensemble, "séduisant", "facile". Les tops models (féminines uniquement) sont magnifiques mais on ne s'en rend pas vraiment compte : l'importance du blanc, l'absence d'accessoires, les poses épurées, tout cela contribue à dématérialiser les modèles, presque à en faire des épures, presque jusqu'au dessin au fusain.</p>
<p>Sont aussi présentées des vues de son matériel (chambre, objectif) et de son atelier qui ne sont pas convaincantes (il faut dire que le titre de l'exposition est "Studio" : on ne pouvait pas y couper). D'autres photographies, en couleur ou noir et blanc, s'essayent à d'autres thèmes que les femmes, d'autres approches mais, là-aussi, cela me semble moins convaincant.</p>
<p>L'ensemble m'a semblé en harmonie avec les lieux, très clairs et aérés, sans reflets perturbants. Il ne faut pas perdre de vue non plus qu'il s'agit d'un choix délibéré : Roversi a produit par ailleurs de nombreuses photos de mode aux couleurs qui claquent, avec des top-models éthérés et des accessoires clinquants.</p>
<p>L'exposition <strong>Lindbergh </strong>nous fait quitter la place de la République pour l'Église des Frères-Prêcheurs, toujours dans le centre-ville. L'ambiance de cette église est plus sombre et les photos également. Mais là, les tirages sont pour la plupart immenses et cela a le don d'un peu m'agacer car cela me parait toujours un moyen simple de faire impression et, ici, sans rapport véritable avec le sujet : des photos de mode destinées à publiées dans des magazines.</p>
<p>Cette "starification" (pour ne pas dire "sanctification") par le format, bof.</p>
<p>Les photographies ont toutes été, semble-t-il, réalisées sur la plage de Beauduc (à Arles). On n'est plus là, comme chez Roversi, dans une photo modeste, blanche et dépouillée : non, là c'est le triomphe de la pose recherchée, du vêtement de qualité. En plus il y a des mannequins hommes, quelle déception (mais non, je blague : il en faut pour tous et toutes).</p>
<p><strong>Il m'a semblé qu'on était là dans la photo de mode dans toute sa splendeur, un peu vide, vaguement arrogante et déjà vue cent fois</strong>. De la belle photo certes mais bof. Peut-être finalement que les photographies les plus intéressantes, les moins vues, étaient des photos géantes d'une bouche aux dents ébréchées photographiée en rafale : une photo originale et décalée qui tranchait délibérément avec l'étalage de beautés lointaines.</p>
<p>Je l'ai déjà dit mais tant pis, les reflets ici étaient vraiment une catastrophe et, sur des grands formats sombres, cela gâche tout. C'est un peu comme le morceau de salade coincé entre les dents.</p>

<p>As my seven-year-old and I embarked on our blog project for the summer, we reflected on our endeavor from last summer.  <!--more-->Daniel had authored (I like this verb!) a book entitled <em>Lindbergh's Adventure</em>.  It turned into a painfully slow (at times) but intellectually stimulating and memorable project that not only helped Daniel improve his research and writing skills but also  --perhaps more importantly-- helped the mother-and-son team bond with each other.  We affectionately called it "Lindbergh Project". </p>
<p>Well, this summer, we once again chose to pursue our passion for Lindbergh and aviation, though in a different format.  Daniel and I were intrigued with the idea of launching a blog and reaching out to a broader audience through the Internet.  (My prior post elaborates on this.)  Also, we wanted to take a somewhat different approach to our research this time.  Last year, virtually all the books and articles we read about Lindbergh had been written, more or less, from a contemporary perspective; but actually the two of us were  becoming more interested in reading articles published around that historical day in May, 1927, when the aviator flew triumphantly into the glow of lights in Paris.   (Continues...)</p>

Amusingly, the cabinet lighting changes through seven colours according to what is happening on screen and the bass beat. The game features 16 courses, set in the Shibuya and Shinjuku districts of Tokyo as well as Hong Kong and New York, which have apparently been accurately reproduced. The game appears to be quite heavy on drifting and boosting and looks to have captured the sensation of speed well, but the screenshots suggest that each race is contested by just four cars. The game features a cameo from Sonic the Hedgehog, with the spiky blue bushpig appearing on the livery of a particular car.</p>
<p>All very good, of course, but I'm hankering after a Rambo website update. After all, we've been talking about it for what seems like an age now, and it's been two months since I went and played the thing at a location test! But no, infuriatingly the site remains nothing more than a "coming soon" message. <p>First there was Tokyo Drift, then Need For Speed Carbon and now Sega is throwing it's hat into the street<a href="http://arcadeheaven.files.wordpress.com/2008/06/rtuned.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-4288 alignright" style="float:right;" src="http://arcadeheaven.wordpress.com/files/2008/06/rtuned.jpg?w=251" alt="" width="251" height="300" /></a> racing arena with another new racing game called R-Tuned Ultimate Street Racing. There is very little information on the game at the moment other than a teaser site announcing it's location test in Japan which starts today and goes until the 29th. The game is developed by AM2 and runs on the Lindbergh hardware and it uses a modified RaceTV cabinet. There is a  teaser site up for the game that you can visit by clicking below and <a href="http://64.233.179.104/translate_c?hl=en&#38;langpair=ja%7Cen&#38;u=http://www.kobayan.jp/" target="_blank">one site already has had a look at the game</a> where they report that the game employs a save card system and even has drifting in it. I think this makes 12 racers I know of coming to arcades in some form but we're <a href="http://arcadeheroesforum.com/index.php?showtopic=1307" target="_blank">putting together a master list of arcade releases in the forum</a> and so it might end up being more once we have it all written down.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Com'è che si fa a potersi difendere quando ti guardano con certi occhi, quando da lontano arrivano i ricordi a dirti che sarà di nuovo solo un film in testa, ed è per questo che ti piace provarci, andare a sbattere la faccia?</p>
<p><em>Butterò questo mio enorme cuore tra le stelle un giorno /<br />
giuro che lo farò...</em></p>
<p>e intanto sto qui a rigirarmi canzoni tra i denti, a far finta di non sapere come andrà a finire, cosa succede passo per passo ad ogni mossa per ogni pedina... Fortuna che a volte alle canzoni resta attaccata la poesia, così senza accorgersi, e allora si può usare come un incantesimo per dire senza parlare...</p>

<p>Look! It's <a title="Wikipedia article" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Lindbergh" target="_blank">Lindbergh's</a> "<a title="Wikipedia article" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spirit_of_St._Louis" target="_blank">Spirit of St. Louis</a>" flying from New York to Paris under the helpful sculptural inscription <strong>Lindbergh Air Mail</strong>. And on the other two airmail stamps, pairs of mail <a title="Wikipedia article" href="http://www.old-picture.com/biplanes-index-001.htm" target="_blank">biplanes</a> on a collision course. In each one, <a title="Wikipedia article" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forced_perspective" target="_blank">forced perspective</a> makes it appear as the final outcome for good or for ill should occur within one or two seconds, at most. These come from a time where air travel was still new and daring, an exciting human achievement the same way the early space age felt.</p>
<p>Unlike the simple outlines of the countries at the edges of the North Atlantic on the Lindbergh stamp, the biplane stamp maps emphasize the geographical features of the Lower 48, not the political outlines so much, except for the southern border in bold.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align:justify;"><a href="http://wordsonthewall.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/plot_against_usa1.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-31" src="http://wordsonthewall.wordpress.com/files/2008/05/plot_against_usa1.jpg?w=198" alt="" width="176" height="267" /></a><span style="font-size:12pt;">The Plot Against America is a great book, written by Philip Roth. </span><span style="font-size:12pt;">The story is about Roth himself and his family living in a time of fear, anger and concerning due to the winning of Lindbergh in the elections of 1940 against Franklin Delano Roosevelt. It is another version of the history that shows the anti-semitism in that the USA had fallen since President Lindbergh had come up to lead the nation into a neutral position during the II World War, however supporting the Third Reich. Roth is an eight and nine year old child who tells the story in that innocent but clever way of analysing the reality.</span></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-size:12pt;">This is a very good book, about the awareness but concerned prespective by the jew community of a country threatened by anti-semitism and fascism.</span></p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>skonczylam czytac wczoraj. no..trzeba przyznac fajny koles byl z Helmuta. egocentryk i owszem, ale przy tym z olbrzymia dawka autoironii. najgorzej bywa jak wielkiemu tworcy odbije na punkcie swoim i swoich dziel. najdziwniejsze jest to, ze z reguly odbija tym mniejszym tworcom : ) ci faktycznie duzi sa na to zbyt dojrzali. i dzieki bogu. Helmut znal swoja wartosc, od poczatku dazyl do bycia "slynnym fotografem" ale caly czas nie zapominal o swoich slabosciach, ulotnosci chwili. jest takie jedno jego stwierdzenie na zakonczenie biografii: "<em>Na tym koncze moja opowiesc, poniewaz czytanie o cudzych sukcesach, malych czy duzych, nikogo nie interesuje. Liczy sie osiaganie sukcesu. I o tym jest ksiazka.</em>". niby proste i oczywiste. niby.  autobiografie Newtona z rozkosza podsunelabym pod nos wszystkim fotografersom maniakom - gadzeciarzom : ) co  wielki Newton pisze o  sprzecie fotograficznym? heh - cytuje bo warto: " <em>Niewiele sie zmienilo w mojej technice fotografowania od czasu, kiedy bylem chlopcem. W latach trzydziestych latem pracowalem w swietle dziennym a zima portrety, ktore robilem swoim dziewczynom, oswietlalem dwustuwatowa lampa zdjeciowa. Dzisiaj dorobilem sie piecsetwatowej. Nie mam swiatla stroboskopowego, rzadko pracuje w studiu - wynajmuje dodatkowe wyposazenie i studio jak jest taka potrzeba. </em>"I tyle : ) Z gadzetow o wiele wiecej uwagi poswieca opisom swoich samochodow : ) ale i tak najwazniejsze dla niego jest samo fotografowanie mody, realizacja pomyslow. no i oczywiscie kobiety i sex. bez tego nie byloby Newtona. nie powstalby "porno szyk" bez ktorego od wielu ladnych lat nie moga sie obejsc modowe edytoriale w najlepszych magazynach, kampanie reklamowe itp. obserwacja scenek ulicznych, zapamietywanie zdarzen i motywow z mlodych lat, podroze, ksiazki, filmy - to skarbnica Newtona. z tego wynikaja jego foty i to wypelnia jego ksiazke. nie ma nudnawych wykladow o wyzszosci takiej soczewki nad taka, maniakalnych opisow mega sprzetu. bo tak naprawde czym jest fotografia i na czym polega? technika  - owszem. dobre szklo tez sie przydaje. ale co z tego, ze ktos ma  kilka walizek wypelnionych mega gadzetami. co z tego, ze dorobil sie kilku hektarow studia, ma tlo na pilota i zgromadzony caly komplet oswietleniowy pro foto. przeciez nie to sie liczy ostatecznie. wazny jest efekt koncowy - czyli fota. ja bez bicia sie przyznaje, ze o aparatach i reszcie sprzetu wiem tylko tyle, zeby umiec ustawic parametry i pstryknac. nie zaglebiam sie w nowinki techniczne, nie sledze z zapartym tchem jakiego to cudownego canona tudziez nicona wypuszcza za moment na rynek. mam to delikatnie mowiac  - gdzies :  ) zwyczajnie - szkoda mi na to czasu. wole ogladac zdjecia, modelki, sledzic trendy w modzie ( skoro juz zajmuje sie foceniem mody to moj obowiazek niemalze), szukac inspiracji w filmach, obrazach, muzyce, zyciu...i pstrykac, pstrykac, pstrykac. walczyc z cala ta fotograficzna materia, zmieniac sposoby patrzenia, szukac nowych rozwiazan, oswietlen, kadrow i calej tej nieuchwytnej magii. tego nienazwanego "czegos" - co sprawia, ze fotografowanie przestaje byc zapisem rzeczywistosci, swoista dokumentacja, utrwaleniem chwili tylko....a staje sie czyms wrecz mistycznym. Newton na pewnym etapie swojego zycia  trafia sparalizowany do szpitala. aparat, robienie zdjec pozwalaja mu zwalczyc chorobe  "<em> Pewnego dnia zadzwonilem do Grace Miarbelli i powiedzialem: -sluchaj Grace, wiem, jestem slaby - slaby to bylo deliktanie powiedziane, ledwie trzymalem sie na nogach, bylem slaby jak kociak - ale chcialbym zrobic kilka zdjec w swoim pokoju hotelowym. Wynajeto dwie modelki - Marbaret Ramme i Vivien Fauney - i Vogue przyslal mi troche bielizny. Ledwo moglem podniesc swoj aparat 35mm, ale mialem asystenta i piecsetwatowy reflektor, zaczalem wiec robic zdjecia. Zajelo mi to duzo czasu. Zrobienie jednego trwalo chyba pol dnia, potem odpoczalem, a nastepnie przez drugie pol dnia zrobilem kolejne..</em>" i dalej pisze "<em> kiedy wywiezli mnie z sali operacyjnej po cewnikowaniu, sciskalem swoja mala automatyczna minolte. Dwie pielegniarki przetoczyly mnie obok June ( zony Newtona) , ktora czekala na korytarzu. Uslyszala, jak jedna z siostr mowi do drugiej: -co on do diabla sciska w rece? - aparat. - a po co mu aparat? - mysli, ze bedzie sobie robil zdjecia.</em>" czytajac to wszystko przypomniala mi sie moja potrzeba biegania z aparatem po szpitalu w styczniu, w najciezszych chwilach choroby mojego taty. pielegniarki patrzyly na mnie jak na dziwaka. pamietam jak dzis pytanie jednej z nich, czy te zdjecia to do jakiejs gazety robie..mamma mia...odpowiedzialam, ze nie. ze jestem tu i czekam na amputacje nogi mojego taty. a aparat to moje trzecie oko. lepsze niz te w glowie bo nie lzawi. potem juz mnie przestaly pytac i moglam sobie dalej pstrykac plytki z linoleum i jarzeniowki. chociaz podobnie jak Newton nie jestem i nie bede reportazysta. albo streetowcem jak moi koledzy Bies (     Konard Jakubowski) czy Jasiek ( Janusz Miller). oni maja do tego zaciecie, umieja sie w tym zatracic i popelnic naprawde fajne foty. ja nie. mi brakuje modelki. musze miec kawalek mody..nawet bez ciucha, buta czy makijazu. ale musi byc cos z tego mojego ulubionego fashion. tak bardzo wysmiewanego przez spora gromade "prawdziwych fotografow", dla ktorych dzialka zwana fotografia mody to cos z boku, ot taka komercyjka, mniej powazna od reporterki, aktu czy pejzazu. co na ten temat pisze mistrz Newton? : " <em>Mam kilku dobrych przyjaciol, ktorzy sa artystami fotografii. Odrzucaja wszystkie zlecenia i pracuja jedynie dla siebie, w nadziei na grant albo sprzedaz do muzeum. Podziwiam ich wytrwalosc, ale czesto ich prace wydaja mi sie nudne. Dziekuje swiatu komercji - spoleczenstwu konsumpcyjnemu - za wszystkie odniesione sukcesy, nie fundacjom, muzeom ani grantom. Praca dla magazynow czy na zamowienie zawsze byla dla mnie stymulujaca i inspirujaca. Potrzebuje takiej dyscypliny i okreslonych ram. Oczywiscie czesto sugeruje redaktorom pewne pomysly, w nadziei, ze pozwola mi je zrealizowac. Strona magazynu stanowi dla mnie swoiste laboratorium, w ktorym wyprobowuje nowe pomysly. Jak inaczej moglbym skorzystac z uslug najlepszych makijazystow, fryzjerow i modelek na swiecie? Nie wyobrazam sobie bez nich pracy. Gdyby nie smialosc francuskiego Vogue'a w kwestii publikacji moich zdjec, kiedy byly one jeszcze uwazane za odwazne, ewolucja w mojej fotografii dokonywalaby sie o wiele wolniej." </em>w obecnym postmodernistycznym swiecie, gdzie wszystko miesza sie ze wszystkim, moda przestala byc czyms abstrakcyjnym. owszem sa pokazy mody haute couture, gdzie moda jest sztuka, ale jest tez ulica, filmy, videoclipy..za pomoca mody mozna tak wiele wyrazic, opowiedziec o czym tylko sie zapragnie. czesto lepiej i dosadniej niz za pomoca slow. tym bardziej , ze nie ma i nie bedzie jezyka idealnego : ) dlatego tak bardzo mnie kreca magazyny modowe.  za mode, za modelki, za te miliony wspanialych historii opowiadanych przez Kleina, Roversiego, Lindbergha, von Unverth, Meisela, Webera, Kadela, Luchforda,Sorrentiego, Munro, Akrans, Testino, Alas i Piggott... itd.itp.  ( celowo pominelam Demarcheliera gdyz za nim nie przepadam;) . dobre magazyny mody oglada sie jak albumy. powoli , z namaszczeniem, smakujac kazda stronice..no tak. serio. mam fiola. a w zielonym pokoiku na ukochanym metalowym regale znajduja sie tylko i wylacznie wszystkie edycje wloskiego Vogue'a jakie posiadam - ulozone z pietyzmem wg. dat wydania.. : ) jest tez osobne miejsce na inne edycje Vogue'a, na Numero, Another Magazine, Noise,Amice, Flair....To prawdziwa kopalnia pomyslow, stylu, trendow. zielony pokoik to moje biuro, wiec idealne miejsce na sterty ulubionych gazet. ale jak to zazwyczaj  bywa lubia sie one przemieszczac i mozna sie o nie potknac w przedpokoju, sypialni a przede wszystkim w lazience : ) eh..znow slysze ten ironiczny chichot dobywajacy sie z dobrze odzywionych gardel panow "prawdziwych fotografow", ktorzy nabywaja zupelnie inne pisma a dzial mody rowna sie dla nich dzial babski i omijaja go w empikach szerokim lukiem. dobrze, ze mlody Newton nie omijal magazynow mody i juz jako nastolatek zdecydowal, ze zostanie fotografem Vogue'a. co mu sie rzecz jasna w pelni udalo - zaczynal od pracy dla edycji australijskiej, by przez Londyn trafic do Vogue Paris - gdzie najpelniej uksztaltowala sie jego fotografia.</p>
<p>rozpisalam sie nieco a praca czeka. niedlugo weekend i kolejne zmagania sesyjne z modelkami. kielkuja mi juz w glowie pomysly..chce wreszcie zrealizowac cos co dojrzewa we mnie od dawna. cos co wiaze sie z moja ulubiona epoka w malarstwie..bede ganiac za dodatkami stylizacyjnymi caly piatek a potem meczyc modelki do nocy..pelna obaw ( jak zwykle) czy cokolwiek z tego wyjdzie. i na co to wszystko? po co? gdzie tu logika? odpowiem cytatem z ksiazki Newtona : <em>" Zdjecia mody rzadko maja jakas logike. Kazde jest chwila bez poczatku i konca."</em> Amen : )</p>

　Of course, I knew these things were going on; but it is one thing to have the intellectual knowledge, even to look at photographs someone else has taken, and quite another to stand on the scene yourself, seeing' hearing, feeling with your own senses. A strange sort of disturbance entered my mind. Where was it I had felt like that before? The South Pacific? yes; those rotting Japanese bodies in the Biak caves; the load of garbage dumped on dead soldiers in a bomb crater; the green skulls set up to decorate ready room and tents.<br />
　It seemed impossible that men―civilized men―could degenerate to such a level. Yet they had. Here at camp Dora in Germany; there in the coral caves of Biak. But there, it was we, Americans, who had done such things, we who claimed to stand for something different. We, who claimed that the German was defiling humanity in his treatment of the Jew, were doing the same thing in our treatment of the Jap. "They really are lower than beasts. Every one of ’em ought to be exterminated." How many times had I heard that statement made by American officers in the pacific! "And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?"<br />
　I looked at the young pole. Where had I seen starvation like that before? It was on Biak Island, too. The picture of a native war canoe came up in memory--paddling slowly toward the shore near our camp, the Japanese prisoners escorted from it by armed, half –naked natives, at the end of the line several so starved that they could not stand to walk, thinner even than this Pole. Oh, we had not starved them in a prison camp like the Germans. We had been too "civilized," too clever for that. We had let them starve themselves in the jungle (their own fault) by simply not accepting their surrender, It was simple, and one was not bothered by burning eyes of famine or danger of disease. A few miles of jungle hid and smothered all of that. It was only necessary to shoot a few men advancing to surrender with their hands in the air. (“You can’t trust a Jap to surrender. He'll throw a grenade at you. The only way is to kill him right now." Or one could be more blunt about it and shout to an enemy emissary, as our infantry officers boasted of doing at the west caves, "Get back in there and fight it out, you sons of bitches."<br />
　A long line of such incidents parades before my mind: the story of our Marines firing on unarmed Japanese survivors who swam ashore on the beach at Midway; the accounts of our machine-gunning prisoners on a Hollandia airstrip; of the Australians pushing captured Japanese soldiers out of the transport planes which were taking them south over the New Guinea mountains ("the Aussies reported them as committing hara-kiri or 'resisting' "; of the shinbones cut, for letter openers and pen trays, from newly killed Japanese bodies on Noemfoor; of the young pilot who was "going to cream that Jap hospital one of these days"; of American soldiers poking through the mouths of Japanese corpses for gold-filled teeth ("the infantry's favorite occupation" ; of Jap heads buried in anthills "to get them clean for souvenirs"; of bodies bulldozed to the roadside and dumped by the hundreds into shallow, unmarked graves("where they’re so close we can’t stand ’em, we have to bury ’em"; of Pictures of Mussolini and his mistress hung by the feet in an Italian city, to the approval of thousands of Americans who claim to stand for high, civilized ideals. As far back as one can go in history' these atrocities have been going on, not only in Germany with its Dachaus and its Buchenwalds and its Camp Doras, but in Russia, in the Pacific, in the riotings and lynchings at home, in the less-publicized uprisings in Central and South America, the cruelties of China, a few years ago in Spain, in pogroms of the past, the burning of witches in New England, tearing People apart on the English racks, burnings at the stake for the benefit of Christ and God.<br />
　I look down at the pit of ashes ("twenty-five thousand in a year and a half". This, I realize, is not a thing confined to any nation or to any people. What the German has done to the Jew in Europe, we are doing to the Jap in the Pacific. As Germans have defiled themselves by dumping the ashes of human beings into this pit, we have defiled ourselves by bulldozing bodies into shallow, unmarked tropical graves. What is barbaric on one side of the earth is still barbaric on the other. "Judge not that ye be not judged” It is not the Germans alone, or the Japs, but the men of all nations to whom this war has brought shame and degradation.<br />

　無論、このような事が行われているのを、自分は知っていた。しかし、よしんばそれが第三者の撮影した写真を見て得た知識であっても、自らその現場に立ち、この眼で見、この耳で聴き、五感で感じた場合とはわけが違う。一種、異様な困惑が襲ってきた。以前にかかる困難を覚えたのはどこでだったろうか。南太平洋でか。そうとも、ビアク島の洞窟で日本兵の遺体が腐りかけるのを見掛けたときだ、爆撃跡の穴に埋まる日本兵の遺体の上から残飯が投げ捨てられ、待機室やテントにまだ緑色を呈する日本兵の頭蓋骨が飾り付けてあるのを見掛けたときだ。<br />
　かりそめにも人間が―文明人が、かかる次元まで堕落できるとは考えられないことのような気がする。にもかかわらず、彼らは現実にこうして堕落したのである、ここドイツのキャンプ・ドラにおいて、またかのビアク島の洞窟において。しかも、ビアク島ではわれわれアメリカ人がそれをやってのけたのである、それとは異なる価値のために立ち上ったと主張するわれわれが、だ。ドイツ人はユダヤ人の扱い方で人間性を汚《けが》したと主張するわれわれアメリカ人が、日本人の扱い方で同じようなことをしでかしたのである。「やつらは本当に獣以下だ。どいつもこいつも皆殺しにすべきだ」。耳に胼胝《たこ》ができるほど南太平洋のアメリカ軍将校から開かされた台詞《せりふ》だ！「何故、兄弟の目にある塵を見て、おのが日にある梁木《うつばり》を認めぬか」<br />
　私はポーランド少年を見やった。このような飢餓状態をどこで見たろうか。それも、ビアク島においてだ。原住民の操るカヌーの光景が記憶に甦《よみがえ》ってきた―われわれのキャンプ近くの岸辺に向ってゆっくりと漕ぎながら、半裸体の武装した原住民に護送される日本軍の捕虜たちだ。列の後尾にいた若干名は歩行できないほど飢えており、このポーランド少年より瘡せ細っていた。勿論、ドイツ人が捕虜収容所でポーランド少年を飢えさせたように、アメリカ人が日本人を飢えさせたわけではない。われわれがあまりにも〝文明化″し、手際が良すぎただけの話である。ただ日本人の投降を受け付ないことにより、彼らをして密林内で飢えさせたに過ぎぬ（彼らの責任において）。単純明快な事態であった。飢餓のために眼がぎらつこうと疾病《しっぺい》の危険性があろうと、われわれは心を動かされなかった。数マイルにわたる密林がそれを覆い隠し、消し去ってくれたからだ。両手を挙げて投降しょうとする先頭の日本兵を撃ち殺しさえすればよかった（「ジャップの投降は信用できない。手相弾を投げつけるからね。即座に撃ち殺してしまう手しかないよ」）。あるいはただ打切棒《ぶっきらぼう》に振舞い、白旗を掲げて来た敵の使者を怒鳴りつければよいのだ、歩兵部隊の将校連が洞窟で、「顔を洗って出直して来い、畜生め」と勝ち誇ったように。<br />
　かかる一連の出来事が走馬灯のように脳裏をかすめて行く。わが海兵隊が、ミッドウェーの砂浜に寸鉄を帯びないで泳ぎつこうとする日本軍の生存者を撃ち殺した話。ホランディア飛行場で、わが軍が日本軍の捕虜に機銃掃射を浴びせた話。ニューギニアの山越えに南へ飛ぶ輸送機の上から、オーストラリア人が日本軍の捕虜を突き落した話（「オーストラリア軍は捕虜がハラキリを演じたとか〝抵抗″したからと報告してるんだ」）。ヌルフォール島で殺されたばかりの日本兵の死体から脛骨を切り出し、ペーパー・ナイフやペン皿を造った話。「そのうちに、あのジャップの野戦病院をたたき潰してやるぞ」と豪語した若いパイロットの話。金歯を求めて日本兵の遺体の口をこじ開けたアメリカ兵の話（「そいつは歩兵お得意の内職でね」）。「スーべニア用としてこぎれいにするため」日本兵の生首を蟻塚に埋めたという話。ブルドーザーで日本兵の死体を道路の片側に寄せ、浅い、墓標のない穴に放り込んだ話（「それが近くにあったりすると、我慢ができないので埋めてしまうんだ」）。イタリアの町でムソリーニと愛人が逆さ吊りにされた写真を、高い文化的理想を主張する何千というアメリカ人が容認したこと。歴史を遡《さかのぼ》れば、かかる残虐行為は古今東西を問わず続けられてきたのであった、ドイツのダハウ、ブッケンワルト、キャンプ・ドラといった収容所においてばかりではない、ロシアから太平洋にかけても、またアメリカ本国の暴動や私刑《リンチ》、中南米のさほど喧伝されぬ蜂起や中国の残酷事件においても、さらに数年前のスペイで、往時のユダヤ人虐殺で、ニューイングランドの魔女焼き、イギリスの八つ裂き刑、キリストと神のみ名において行われて来た火刑においても。<br />
　私は人骨の灰に埋まる穴を見降ろした（「一年半に二万五千人だ」）。かかる行為はなにも特定の国家や民族に限って行われたのではないことに気が付く。ドイツ人がヨーロッパでユダヤ人になしたと同じようなことを、われわれは太平洋で日本人に行なって来たのである。ドイツ人が人間の灰を穴に埋めることで自らを瀆《けが》したと同じように、われわれもまた、ブルドーザーで遺体を浚い、墓標もない熱帯地の穴に放り込むことにより自らを瀆したのである。地球の片側で行われた蛮行はその反対側で行われても、蛮行であることには変りがない。「汝ら人を裁くな、裁かれざらん為なり」（新訳聖書・マタイ伝第七章一節）。この戦争はドイツ人や日本人ばかりではない、あらゆる諸国民に恥辱と荒廃とをもたらしたのだ。<br />

(p.652)・・ He said the Japs dropped a note in a rice bag, saying they would return the next day to bomb the radio (power?) station that was located next to the hospital, and advising evacuation of the hospital. The hospital was evacuated and the station bombed. Of course the dropping of the warning note was left out of the accounts of bombing the hospital which were carried in our papers; at least nothing was said about this in any of the accounts I read.<br />
I asked Clear about the stories concerning Japanese atrocities. He said he had seen Philippine soldiers bayoneted by Japs after they had raised their arms in surrender, and that in the heat of battle little quarter could be expected. He said experience showed, on the other hand, that reasonable consideration could be expected from Japanese forces when a surrender was negotiated in advance.<br />

・・日本軍は米袋の中に通信文を入れて投下した。明日、病院に隣接する放送局（発電所？）を爆撃するので、病院を引き払うようにと勧告してあった。患者は連れ出され、放送局は爆撃を受けた。勿論、本国の新聞に掲載された病院爆撃の記事で、警告文の投下が抜けていたことは断るまでもない。少なくとも自分の読んだ新聞記事には、そのような話はかけらも出ていなかった。<br />
　私はクーリア大佐に日本軍の残虐行為に関する話を問い質してみた。フィリピンの兵士が降伏の両手を挙げた後で日本軍に銃剣で刺殺されるのを目撃したことがあり、戦闘の真只中では慈悲はあまり期待できないものだという。一方、経験の示すところによれば、降伏が事前に折衝された場合には、日本軍から理性的な配慮が期待できるとのことであった。<br />
