When I'm in Zurich it has become a "to do" to check out the latest pick-up madness by Payam who can build a house out of his Visvim FTB-boxes. This time he let me take a closer look on the Kitsuné x Pierre Hardy No. 4 shoes previously seen in the latest issue of Honeyee mag. They first been announced to come out as a Colette Paris exclusive but been released in various stores worldwide. Nice to get 2 pairs of laces, white &...orange fits perfect!

Punkte-Ponte table and cushions from the Tartan collection.

Named after the London zip code where it first started out in 1994, e15 is a German furniture and architecture firm now based near Frankfurt. The company has become well known for its modernizing of modernism and for its multidiscipline collaborations. Over the years, e15 has worked on limited-edition products with the fashion designer Bernhard Willhelm, the photographer Mark Borthwick, the Swiss art publisher Nieves and, most recently, the über-cool French music and fashion collective Kitsuné. The Moment recently caught up with e15’s founder and creative director, the architect Philipp Mainzer.

The Moment: I first noticed e15 through the festive polka-dot table you developed with Bernhard Willhelm a few years back. How do these collaborations come about?

Philipp Mainzer: Maybe it corresponds to how we started. At e15 we didn’t start with a big business plan in mind; we just wanted to create nice products that we couldn’t find that we thought were suitable for the market. That is why we started with the solid wood tables — the first collection was just four tables. It was always about a mission to create useful, quality products. But as we have grown into a bigger company, we've also had to focus on business, so these collaborations help keep our minds going and this is very important to us.

Monster Dice by Geoff McFetridge.

How do these outside influences affect your main line?

To me it not really just about owning a furniture company. If you look at the presentations at fairs like I.C.F.F., everyone is celebrating themselves and it is all about design, but I think this can be a very dangerous circle. I think you need to break out and interact with different disciplines and different professions. All these areas need to be brought into furniture design to help it evolve and move forward, otherwise it will implode. Since I am an architect, I am not so focused on the product. The product is a part of greater things.

Do the collaborations start as friendships?

Yes, mostly. They are not all my best friends, but there needs to be a mutual understanding and appreciation. With Willhelm, we used to run a concept store in Frankfurt where we sold our furniture, but we also sold accessories, fashion and we had a gallery space. We sold his line and from that we got to know him. He always said that he wanted to do furniture so we said O.K. He gave us a pattern to customize one of our existing tables.

The pattern is of polka dots, seven different colors although they are not polka dots they are egg-shaped. There is a lot of thinking in this thing that looks so easy. To reprint seven colors on solid wood wrapping around corners is quite a challenge, and it takes one person a few months to figure it out. People may not see all that goes into it, but we invest in this because we enjoy it and because we feel it helps us to grow and develop and it also helps bring attention to us because we are still a fairly small furniture company. It’s one way we stick out.

And Mark Borthwick?

I think we were at his house and he was showing us his photographs of plywood compositions. Our company image is very consistent, but it’s nice to get rid of all every now and then — so we had him shoot our catalog. He shot our collection outside the Javits Center, and we made a book and this led to asking him to do an installation at the fair in Cologne. He made it on the spot. We made some pieces before, and he manipulated them and combined them with his photography. It was pretty amazing to see.

And how was that received by the furniture industry?

Very well, from people who are open-minded. Other people completely don’t understand and ask, "Why would you show these pieces of plywood that you asked some guy to put together? It has nothing to do with your furniture." But it has to do with space and the interaction of objects.

Do these ideas make their way back into your furniture line?

With Mark it come back through the photography in our catalog. We also collaborated on a second installation, which we have not produced yet. His wife, Maria Cornejo, is opening a new store so we think this may be a good time to produce them. We are not in a rush to crank these things out. They need the right time and the right place to be shown.

Tafel table bench.

What is the most recent collaboration — is it the Monster Dice?

That was instigated by Nieves, this small art publisher. The dice is a scrape from the Big Foot table, with a drawing of a monster burned into the block that connects on all four sides. Again, there is lot of development for something that seems so simple. Everyone I show this to likes it. We also made tables with Kitsune. They run a fashion label but also do music — they are very popular for their amazing music compilations and they actually started as D.J.'s. For their show in Milan during fashion week, we produced eight of these plaid tables, turned them upside down and the legs were used to hold the clothing. At the moment the tables are at being shown at the Dover Street market in London.

What are the newest additions to your main collection?

The sofa line came out last year, but we expanded the collection into beds and introduced them this year.

I like that you named the beds Paradis, meaning paradise, right?

Yeah, they are paradise. They have the same structure and dimensions as the sofa, it could be combined with the sofa. We like them because they can work together without looking modular, it allows you to be flexible but also put together interesting, awkward shapes.

I love the brightly colored tartans. They look shocking mixed with your minimal shapes.

Well, we needed to bring in some color but stay true to where we come from, which is very traditional to some extent, and the tartans fit in great because they are traditional patterns. They are original Scottish plaids made by weavers in the Scottish highlands using old-fashioned methods. Even though they are very old, the bold color combinations are very striking, they feel quite new. And the tartan seems to be in fashion now and this brings us into a fashion context. Which we like.

It must be a hard balancing act bringing fashion into furniture because fashion changes so frequently. How much do you bring yourself into fashion?

We strive to make timeless pieces, so the tartans are pillows that can be changed as your taste changes. We try to take on more than just style when working with fashion. We are inspired by how the material is used, how shapes are combined or a general attitude.

e15 is available in new York at the M2L showroom.

This is a bit late but i find it to be worthwhile. Therefore, I decided to post it anyway. Shinichi Osawa might not be a household name but he definitely paid his dues in this dance scene by producing under Mondo Grosso and being one of the most prolific Japanese producers. He also released some tunes in some of the hippest label such as Kitsune. His debut solo album "The One" was released late last year. Some of the notable tune include the Chemical Brothers' cover "Star Guitar". If you're wandering about his sound, it's halfway between the harder french influenced electro and something more along the line of Mondo Gross but with attitude.

Kit swears to never do drugs again

Kit added the T6 shoulders to her collection...and man, are they creepy. What was the designer thinking? More importantly, what drugs was he/she taking, because I really want to know...they'll definitely be added to my list of recreational substances to stay away from. :)

They're distracting, too - I keep focussing on that big, rolling eyeball in the stitched socket. It's a waking nightmare.

I decided to use bigger screenshots this time around. Since I changed the theme of my blog, I can put these big shots up. And I used the subbed version for screenshots because the raw version was too blurry.

Anyways, I never knew Takashi-kun was that strong. He's so cool~ Kakkoi~ ^^

But one day... A whale with hair came and ate part of the United States. I have to make this post short since I'm kinda in a hurry because I have 2 papers to do today.

And also, do you like the big pictures? After doing this post, I think I don't like them. I guess I might go back to resizing them on imageshack. Whatever you like. Bye~

Of course. Of course.

When you discover a good looking and sweet sounding band Kitsune already have them under their wings. Of course! So no surprise a band like Punks Jump Up is already been taken care of.

Personnaly, I prefer them as a dj/remixer team, but they are also quite impressive behind their own instruments. This fabulous duo is coming straight from London and they know how to shake it. I don’t have much infos on them as their website is not yet available and their myspace is colourful but not really relevant but I know this much: They are young, they know what they are doing and, of course, of course! they are worth a 2-3 minutes of your time. Dancing moves guaranteed.

Oh, yes. I am also joining a remix by the Baseball Furies. A price for the first reader to tell me something nice about the Furies. La Débauche is not allowed in this contest.

Species: Kitsune or Japanese Fox Spirit 狐
Subspecies: Nogitsune or Wild Kitsune. "Keepers of the Void"

Kitsune are considered a type of bakemono or demon. Specifically they are classed as Yōkai (妖怪 "phantom", "spirit", or "monster"). They are considered messengers of the Shinto Kami or God Inari. There are a not a hybrid of human and fox but more a distinct species with the ability to shape shift or appear human. There are stories of Kitsune taking on a human appearence usually as a beautiful woman with almond eyes, and high cheekbones and a fox tail which they find difficulty in hiding. Kitsune can act as guardians for human families or clans but if angered rarely forgive and for that reason historically many families refused any intermarriage into a fox protected family. They have a weakness for inari and tofu and kitsune soup which is named for them. Humans can become possessed by a fox spirit usually entering through the breasts or fingernails. Kitsunetsuki (狐憑き or 狐付き; also written kitsune-tsuki) literally means the state of being possessed by a fox. There is a hiearchy of Fox types associated with 13 shinto elements. A 9 tailed fox is considered powerful but old. The tails representing a life span of 9000 + years. As a kitsune will only grow an additional tail for each 1000 years they have lived. The more tails a kitsune has—up to 9 tails—the older, wiser, and more powerful it is. When a kitsune gains its ninth tail, its fur becomes white or gold. It becomes myobu or 九尾の狐 nine-tailed foxes. They become omnipotent or sometimes omniscience. The fox tail is what usually gives them away. Especially when they are drunk or lazy. When not in human form or possessing a human, a kitsune keeps the ball - hoshi no tama (star balls) - in its mouth or carries it on its tail. A fox is usually frightend by dogs that they will sometimes revert to fox form to flee. Foxes cry is called konkai or kon kon or gon gon. The bark of the fox is called gekker. Female foxes are vixen and not bitches (female dog). Kitsune are friendly with the Tanuki who is another shapeshifter. There is a hiearchy of Fox types associated with 13 Shinto elements:
***
Some of the classes of Kitsune are:
myobu - Celestial
and all others are 野狐 nogitsune or wild literally "field foxes" :
nogitsune - Darkness, Wild "Keeper of the void"
kuko - Air, create or appear in mist & fog
Kiko or koryo - ghost foxes
ninko - invisible fox spirit, that can only be seen by humans that have been possessed by one.
***
In classical Japanese, kitsu-ne means come and sleep, and ki-tsune means always comes. (Wikipedia) It is important to note that Kitsune are part of Japanese folklore while the neko is part of anime and manga creation and do not have a historical conterpart other than the "Bakeneko" demon cat. But they are often confused for one another.
***
If you want to look for a kitsune they live at the end of rainbows and usually are out playing when it rains. But don't watch a fox wedding as this will bring out their angry side.

The 8-bit genre seems to be in bloom after Crystal Castles breathed life into the gameboys and atari-keyboards all around the world. Now, several other bands seem to achieve succes with their 8-bit sounds, and while I'm not very impressed with most of them, You Love Her Coz She's Dead managed to win me over. The style is a little more horror'ish than Crystal Castles and everything is a bit more crazy and messy, but that doesn't make the music less amazing. There's no looking back just a pursuit of musical kicks and You Love Her Coz She's Dead will definately be one of the shinings stars on the 8-bit sky not far from now. Their track Superheroes will be part of the Kitsuné Maison 6 compilation and they're releasing an EP in late November including some of their gems. Thanks to Hyperbole for spreading the word about this 8-bit madness.
