The Islamic Republic of Iran has been in the news quite a bit lately, owing mainly to their president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and his flamboyant speeches concerning Israel and the U.S. Most recently, Ahmadinejad has been a subject brought up by the presidential campaigns. The controversy started when during a July 2007 Democratic Primary Debate, Senator Obama answered the question, "Would you be willing to meet separately, without precondition, during the first year of your administration, in Washington or anywhere else, with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea, in order to bridge the gap that divides our countries?" His response was, "I would. And the reason is this, that the notion that somehow not talking to countries is punishment to them, which has been the guiding diplomatic principle of this administration, is ridiculous."

Since then, Obama's campaign has scrambled to implement damage control measures, stating that, of course, preconditions would have to be in place before he met with the Iranian leadership. They also emphasize that Ahmadinejad is not the ultimate authority in Iran, and that's true. Power in Iran is still held by the Muslim theocracy, which is led by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Khamenei is a protege of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, whose revolution was the primary reason that diplomatic relations were halted.

The U.S. hasn't had diplomatic relations with Iran since 1980 (Jimmy Carter's administration), after 52 U.S. diplomats were taken prisoner and held hostage for a year and 3 months (444 days) until President Reagan was able to secure their release in 1981. Jimmy Carter, not G.W. Bush, is the president who cut off diplomatic relations with Iran after many diplomatic attempts to free them failed and a bungled rescue attempt resulted in the deaths of 8 U.S. servicemen. This was after Carter had compromised the Defense Department by slashing their budget. I repeat, it was Carter, not Bush, who cut off diplomatic relations with Iran nearly 30 years ago. The Bush Administration, in fact, has taken tentative steps to re-establish diplomatic relations with Iran.

The history of our often troubled relationship with Iran goes back much further than 1980, though, including U.S. assistance to help the Iranians free themselves from domination by Britain and Russia in the early years of the 20th Century following World War I. The trouble began in 1953, when the U.S. and Britain covertly supported a coup de etat that succeeded in overthrowing then Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadeq and putting the Shah (the Iranian King) back into power. Following that, Iran was an important ally to the U.S. for many years during the Cold War, during which time resentments against the Shah and the U.S. among certain segments of the Iranian population festered.

The current troubles began boiling to the surface when President Carter, who was negotiating arms reduction (SALT II) with the Soviet Union at the time, criticized the Shah's government and its human rights record, pressuring the Shah to relax restrictions on freedom of speech and to allow more freedom for political dissidents (who were primarily communists and/or fundamentalist Muslims who wanted to overthrow the monarchy). The USSR invaded Iran's neighbor Afghanistan in 1978, then came the Iranian Revolution in 1979 that ousted the Shah and replaced the monarchy with a Muslim theocracy led by the outspoken anti-American Ayatollah Khomeini. The Shah himself went into exile in Egypt. In November '79, the U.S. embassy in Tehran was raided and the 52 hostages taken, justified after the fact as a reaction to the Shah's being allowed into the U.S. to receive medical treatment for cancer.

Diplomacy with Iran is inevitable, and either candidate for President will be forced to address the issue of Iran, especially where their acquiring nuclear weapons is concerned. So the question is not whether we should pursue diplomatic relations with them. The question is the manner in which that should be done, and it's my opinion that the situation requires not only careful and experienced diplomats, but the correct attitude. Jimmy Carter's bungling in trying to appease the Russians got us into that mess in the first place, and judging from Obama's rhetoric, his administration is likely to look very much like another Carter Administration. I also have no doubt that Russia is still very much a player in that part of the world. As you consider what it would be like to have a third Bush Administration (which Obama's camp continually claims a McCain presidency would be), compare that with a second Carter Administration (which, judging from much of what he's said, an Obama presidency will undoubtedly be).

By Dzulfikar

The title 'Ayatollah' holds negative connotations in minds of most non-muslims. When the word is mentioned, first thoughts will be of violence, female oppression and hatred. We have the media to thank for this. The truth is that our greatest Ayatollahs (learned scholars) were paragons of kindness, love and devotion to God. Their stances against oppressors and immorality came from a deep love of God, which imbued within them a strong determination to oppose all forms of corruption. Intense love of God was their principle driving factor, not hatred. The following short stories will give you an insight into how these personalities lived their lives, in particular how they acted towards women.

Allamah Tabataba'i

A philosopher, mystic and one of the greatest exegetes of the Holy Qur'an in Shia Islam.

Love of Wife

‘Allāma’s family life was extremely warm and pleasant. When his wife passed away he shed so many tears and was so saddened and moved that one day we asked him, “we should be learning patience and endurance from you - why are you affected such?”

He replied:

Death is inevitable. Everyone must die. I am not crying for the death of my wife. My tears are for the kindness, housekeeping abilities, and the love my wife had. I have had a life full of ups and downs. In the holy city of Najaf when we were faced with many difficulties, I was not even aware of the needs and the administration of our life [because she took care of them so well]. Managing our life was in the hands of my wife, and throughout our life not once did my wife do something that I said I wish she hadn’t done that, even just to myself. Nor did she ever not do something that I said I wish she had carried that out!

Throughout our life together never once did she say to me why did you carry out that particular act, or why didn’t you do something! For example, you know that I work at home and am continually occupied with writing and studying. As a result I get tired and occasionally I need to rest and to renew my energy. My wife was aware of this. She would always have the kettle on and tea ready. Although she was busy with housework, she would pour me one cup of tea every hour. She would place it in my study and would return to her work until the following hour…how can I ever forget such love and kindness?!

Ayatullah Ibrāhīm Amīnī (author of self building)

Like two friends

His [‘Allāma’s] behavior with my mother was incredibly respectful and friendly. Through his actions it seemed as if he was always eager to see my mother. We never saw them order each other to do or not do anything, nor did we see any discord between the two of them. They were loving, loyal and forgiving to each other to such an extent that we thought they never disagreed. The two of them were truly like two friends with each other.

Prior to her death, my mother was ill and confined to bed for 27 days. During this period my father did not leave her bedside for a single moment. He left all his work to take care of her.

At the same time my mother was an exceptional woman. She was patient when faced with difficulties and a meager lifestyle. She managed all our household affairs. She took care of our academic and social life and handled all our concerns. She worked with such efficiency and wisdom that my father was able to pursue his academic work with complete ease of mind.

‘Allāma’s daughter

My partner in all that was good

“It was this woman who allowed me to reach this position. She has been my partner and whatever books I have written, half [of the credit] belongs to her.”

This one sentence from ‘Allāma Tabātabā’ī is sufficient as an indication of his enlightened view of women. At another time he said:

If a woman did not have importance, God would not have placed the lineage of the 12 Imāms in the progeny of Hazrat Zahra (a). Truly if a woman is noble and good she can make the entire world a rose-garden, and if she is bad she can make the world a hell…Women and men are partners, and after looking after the raising of her children, a woman must become aware and familiar with the affairs of her society.

Link

Imam Khomeini

Most know Imam Khomeini as the leader of the Islamic revolution in Iran, but there was much more to him than this. He has authored many books on ethics and spirituality, and is recognised as a great mystic and philosopher. His two most famous works are Forty Hadith and Etiquettes of Prayer

Observance of the rights of a wife:

Imam always offered me the better place in the room. He would not start eating until I came to the dinner table. He would also tell the children: ‘Wait until Khanom comes.’ He maintained respect for me and was not even willing that I should work in the house. He would always tell me: ‘Don’t sweep.’ If I wanted to wash the children’s clothes at the pond[1], he would come and say: “Get up, you shouldn’t be washing.”

On the whole, I have to say that Imam did not consider sweeping, washing dishes and even washing my children’s clothes as part of my responsibilities. If out of necessity I sometimes did these, he would get upset considering them as a type of unjust dealing towards me.

Even when I entered the room, he would never say: ‘Close the door behind you,’ but waited till I sat down and then would himself get up and shut the door.[2]

The Imam’s Wife

60 years of living together and not one request for a glass of water:

Imam had extraordinary respect for his wife. For example, I am not lying if I say that in the period of 60 years of living together, he did not even reach for food (on the dinner table) before his wife, nor did he have even the smallest expectation from her. I can even say that in the period of 60 years of living together, at no time did he even ask for a glass of water, but would always get it himself. If he was in such a position that he could not, he would say: ‘Is the water not here?’ He would never say: ‘Get up and bring me water.’ He behaved this way not only with his wife but also with all of us who were his daughters. If he ever wanted water we would all enthusiastically run to get it, but he never wanted us to bring and give him a glass of water in his hand.

During the difficult last days of his life, each time he would open his eyes, if he was capable of speaking, he would ask: ‘How is Khanom?’ We would reply: ‘She is good. Shall we tell her to come to you?’ He would answer: ‘No, her back is hurting. Let her rest.’[3]

Siddiqa Mustafavi (Imam’s daughter)

Blessed am I that I have such a wife:

Imam was very attached to his wife and had special respect for her, so much so that he placed his wife on one side, and his children on the other.

I remember that once Imam’s wife had gone on a journey, and Imam was missing her very much. When he would frown, we would jokingly say to him: ‘When Khanom is here, Imam laughs, and when she is not here, Imam is upset and frowns.’

In short, however much we teased Imam, he would not stop frowning. Finally I said: ‘Blessed is Khanom that you like her so much.’ He said: ‘Blessed am I that I have such a wife. No one else has sacrificed as much in life as she has. If you too would be like Khanom, your husband would also like you this much.’[4]

Siddiqa Mustafavi (Imam’s daughter)

I have come to wash the dishes:

One day, as it so happened, there were many guests at Imam’s house. After the meal, I collected the dishes and took them to the kitchen. Along with Zahra, the daughter of Agha Ishraqi, we prepared to wash the dishes. However we saw that Imam himself had immediately come to the kitchen.

I asked Zahra: “Why has Haaj Agha come to the kitchen?” I had a right to be surprised because it wasn’t time to perform wudu. Imam rolled up his sleeves and said: “Because there are many dishes today, I have come to help you.” My body started to tremble. My Lord! What am I seeing! I said to Zahra: “I swear by you to Allah, please request Imam to leave. We will wash the dishes ourselves.” This was really unexpected for me.[10]

As we are in the blessed month of Ramadhaan ; I would like to encourage the muslims who are fasting to enhance and increase in the acts of obedience, and I pray that we all be among the accepted ones. Ameen.

And also as it is the month of fasting , lets take a look at what the religion of the shia tells them regarding some rulings pertaining to fasting :

In the previous posts we have known [and seen the proof] of how they make halaal what Allaah has made haraam : i.e. the evil and nasty and despicable act of having anal intercouse.

This itself -making permissible what The Legislator has made impermissible - is disbelief. As is well known and clear.

But I am sure you didnt know this :

They didnt stop there !

Not only is it permissible , its even okay during fasting !!

If you think I am lieing then I will prove you wrong soon [look at the proof below] , and if you think that 'yes indeed these people are astray and deviated' - then Alhamdulillaah thats what we have to let each other know.

We will bring this 'ruling' of theirs from two different books , so as to leave no doubts.

Before that ; just a reminder : we have to know that they relate and ascribe most of their things to Abu Abdullaah Jaafar as-Saadiq (may Allaah be pleased with him) : these are false ascriptions and lies. He is far from these people and their wickedness. And even then - speaking hypothetically- if these things were narrated authentically from him : we cannot take any words which oppose the Perfect Legislation of Allaah.

Anyways getting back to the topic [and I am sorry for bringing these nasty things , but we have to clarify and expose the truth]

The first one is 'kitaabul waafi' of al-kaashani , and the second is 'wasaail shi'yya ila masaail shariah' by al-huraamli

Al-kaashani says :

Under the Chapter : 'Intercoursing the Anus' :

First highlit : ' When a man approaches a woman in her anus and he does not ejaculate; then they dont have to take a ritual bath ! And if he ejaculates then it is upon him to take a bath and not a must on her.!'

Second highlit : 'Regarding the man who approaches a woman in her anus while she is fasting : 'It does not break her fast , and she does not have to take a bath'

Third highlit : 'When a man approaches a woman in her anus while she is fasting : It does not break her fast , and she does not have to take a bath''

The Noble Prophet (sallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam) said :

"We, the company of prophets, have been commanded to hasten the breaking of the fast, to delay the meal before the fast, and to place our right arms on our left arms during prayer." [Ibn Hibbaan & Diyaa', with a saheeh isnaad.]

[Abu Daawood, Nasaa'i & Ibn Khuzaimah (1/54/2) with a saheeh isnaad, and Ibn Hibbaan declared it saheeh (485).]

"He used to place the right arm on the back of his left palm, wrist and forearm"

"and he commanded his companions to do likewise" [Maalik, Bukhaari & Abu 'Awaanah.]

This is all courtersy of the great book -which I would advise every muslim who wants salvation to read - 'The Prophet's Prayer described' by al-Imaam Al-Albaanee (rahimahullaah).

Now after we have seen the words of The Noble Prophet (sallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam), look at the words of the rejectionists : and then please make a choice which methodology you are upon.

Please.

khomeini says in his book tahrir al-wasila 2/166 :

Under the Chapter : The Invalidators of the Prayer :

'Second one : It is putting one hand over the other - as done by the others who are not us.

And in the correct strong opinion : it is an invalidator of prayer if done intentionally and not forgetfully! Even then [if done forgetfully] it is more cautious and better to repeat the prayer.

And it is allowed in times of taqiyya [hypocrisy / lies / deception.] '

In another definition of giving the Imaams a lordly status : and in another examplification of the extremisim and invalidation of the false creed of the rejectionists - look , or read what the destructed one says in his book [al-Ma'd fi nadhar khomeini] :

The Chapter is titled :

'Display of the scripts of the deeds to the person of the era [the Imaam]'

The Prophet (sallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam) said :

"Cursed is the one who approaches his wife in her rectum"

(Reported by Imaam Ahmad, 2/479; see also Saheeh al-Jaami', 5865).

and:

"The one who has intercourse with a menstruating woman, or with a woman in her rectum, or who goes to a fortune-teller, has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad."

(Reported by al-Tirmidhi, no. 1/243; see also Saheeh al-Jaami', 5918).

And there is unanimous consensus of all the scholars of Islaam on this.

But in the religion of the pervets and heretics , this is permissible, not only that ; their immorality and brutality is unrestricted, they cannot hold back the devilish desires ; but we say : please spare the kids, toddlers, infants ! .

khomeini says in his book [at-tahreer al-wasila ]:

[first highlited portion] : " What is more famous and more strong [is the opinion] of permissibility of having anal intercourse with the spouse - but there is a large degree of it being detested. And what is better is to leave it especially if she doesnot agree !!"

[second highlited portion] :

"It is not permissible to have sexual intercourse with one's wife before she has reached nine years of age, be it permanent or temporary marriage.

But there is no problem with all other pleasures such as lustful touch, embracing, and rubbing against the thighs, even with a suckling infant...."

Allaahs' praise of the Companions is widely mentioned in The Qur'an. And their virtue and excellence is part of the creed of any Muslims. Surely we love what Allaah loves , and we give precedence to whom Allaah gave precedence. For example :

Allaah said:

"The forerunners those who came first among the Migrators and the Helpers and those who followed them with the best. Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him and Allah has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow therein forever and that is the great success."

[Suratu At-Tawbah: 100]

And The Prophet (sallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam) said :

"The best of my nation is my generation then those who follow them and then those who follow them." [Saheeh Bukhari]

And more on the excellence of the companions, please see our link section where there is a must-read book on the creed a Muslim has concerning the Companions.

Now, lets look at what the rawaafidha believe of the Companions :

the destructed one says [in the book : al-wasiyyah siyasiya] :

' I completely presume that the Iranian youth -in their millions of numbers- in this current time : they are better than the people of al-Hijaaz [Makkah & Madina and sorrounding areas] during the time of The Prophet (sallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam) .!!

and they are better than the people of Koofah in Iraaq during the time of the prince of believers [Alee] , and Husayn [may Allaah be pleased with both of them] ... '

end of his words !

So who do you believe , Allaah and then The Prophet (sallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam) who said the Companions are the best of people, or this human devil who says such repungent words ?!

and for you is the text :

The shia are known to have innovated the concept of Wilayah [Authority] of having 12 Imaams .

They have made this innovation part of the creed , and they did not stop there. Rather ; as you will see - they believe that one cannot be a believer except by believing in this innovation !

Just annother re-iteration of the fact that they declare all other Muslims [Sunnis] to be disbelievers.

And here is the evidence [the second highlited portion is the one which says that]: And it will be translated word for word inshaAllaah.

As for the first the highlited portion :

Regarding the [interpratation] of the statement of Allaah in Suratul Furqaan : 70

"..for those, Allaah will change their sins into good deeds, and Allaah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

khomeini said : 'A sinful believer will be brought forth in the day of Judgement until he stands at the place of account, And Allaah The Exalted is the One who will take him to account ; and none of the people will look into his account.

So he will be told of his sins, until when he confess to Allaah about his sins. Then Allaah will tell the scriber to change those sins into good deeds and publicize them to the people.

So then the people will say : ' O, this slave [of Allaah] never had even one sin !'

Then Allaah will command him to paradise.

So this is the interpratation of the verse.

And it is exclusiveley for the sinful among our shia [ i.e. for our group] only !!'

end of his words .

Before going to translate the second portion : lets just see the reality of the matter :

Allaah says in Suratul Ghaafir : 5

"Those (angels) who bear the Throne (of Allah) and those around it glorify the praises of their Lord, and believe in Him, and ask forgiveness for those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah) (saying): "Our Lord! You comprehend all things in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who repent and follow Your Way, and save them from the torment of the blazing Fire!"

As for the second highlited portion it says :

"..and from the known matters is that this matter [of being given mercy] is special for the shia of Ahlul Bayt, and it is prohibited for the other people !

this is because belief cannot be achieved except by bearing allegiance to Alee and those he willed to - from among the infallible and pure ones peace be on them !!

Rather Eeman [belief] in Allaah and His Prophets is not accepted without Wilaaya [allegiance to the Imaams] !!

end of his words.

It is commonly known and accepted that Khomeini "the revolutionist , the hero" the leader of the shia ; was their spiritual leader and their highest authority in their religion , as well as their 'Islamic' governement.

So we thought we should begin to clarify what he stood for, And in consequence this is really what the rest of his followers 'the twelver shias' [i.e. aout 80% of all shias in the world] are upon.

what were his beliefs ? ,

do you know <del datetime="00">his </del> their creed ?

what did he preach ?

was he really an ayatollaah : ' a sign from Allaah' ?

Please fasten your seatbelt , and brace yourselves ; I hope this journey would be less bumpy as you expected.
And yes maybe you should get that vomit bag ready.

Just a suggestion.
No offence.

Most of the images and material which will be posted , I found it in one beneficial website of some brothers whom I dont know, and I have never met, but All perfect praise is for Allaah : they are doing a great job in serving the truth.

To Proceed......

Verily the most truthful speech is the Book of Allaah , and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad sallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam .

And the worst matters are the newly invented matters , and ALL new matters are innovations into the religion , and all the innovations are misguidance , and all the misguidance lead to the fire.

To Proceed......

After praising Allaah , I would like you to know that :

This blog is a sincere advise, clarification, and an exposition to everyone who has some sort of misconception or doubt concerning who the shia' - the rawaafidhwa really are.

What do they believe in ? What are there view on the daily rulings of life ?

Are they really just a small difference from the correct Islaam of The Qura'n and The Authentic Sunnaah ?

Maybe we should take a journey to discover the reality . And know that : this is not a conspiracy.

Everything we will post -we will try our best- to capture it from the books of the shia ; as they are.

As the best evidence is from the confession.

So to all those who want success in the here-after : know that when you know the truth from falsehood , it is just helping yourself to reach the intended goal of paradise and being saved from punishment.

So let's again review that : This is a sincere advise to all those who seek the truth. This is not a partisanship call, nor is this a call of nationality , or tribalism. No !

So Let's open our hearts , and sumbit to Allaah , our Creator.

The truth is one only.

Allaah The Exalted Says :

بَلْ نَقْذِفُ بِالْحَقِّ عَلَى الْبَاطِلِ فَيَدْمَغُهُ فَإِذَا هُوَ زَاهِقٌ

"Nay, We fling (send down) the truth (this Qur'an) against the falsehood (disbelief), so it destroys it, and behold, it (falsehood) is vanished. .."

[Suraatul Anbiyaa : 18]

Important note for every reader :

This blog is best suitable for people who have a background on the basic beliefs and the correct creed of Islaam , as in the Qura'n , the Sunnaah , and as understood and passed on by the pious predecessors.

And as such , then you will truly realize the difference between Islaam and the rawaafidh.

As for the readers who dont have background info. on the shia, then please visit the links present in our blogs.

Then come back , please : and realize the truth as it is : from their own writings.

May Allaah bless you.

ex Ambasciata USA a Teheran

21 years ago Sayyid Arif Husseini’s face was covered in blood by the hands of the arrogant powers of the world.

Arif Husseini had a high status who reached the high status of martyrdom because of the way he worship the True One.

These were some of the words by Imam Khomeini about this great martyr.

Arif Husseini was born into a pure family and started his Islamic studies after middle school in Pakistan.

After he finished his preliminary Islamic studies he migrated to Najaf in order to complete them.

Arif Husseini entered Najaf around the same time that Imam Khomeini was exiled there.

He studied for some time under Ayatollah Madani and then was introduced through him to Imam Khomeini.

Arif Husseini was attracted to the Imam from that first meeting and decided to fight to the death for him.

Husseini’s struggles in Iraq caused him to be exiled from there. After he was exiled he returned to Pakistan and after a short while traveled to Qom. He benefited from the presence of Ayatollah Mutahhari, Ayatollah Wahid Khorasani, and others while living in Qom. He was also kicked out of Qom because of his movement and once again returned to Pakistan where he propagated Islam and Imam Khomeini’s thoughts. Three years before his martyrdom he was elected as the head of a large Shia organization which enabled him to spread revolutionary and religious thoughts quickly throughout Pakistan.

This is why he was targeted and killed by the arrogant powers of the world who feared the progress that he was making.

Please send a salawat on his soul.

[caption id="attachment_252" align="alignleft" width="74" caption="taken from www.telegraph.co.uk"][/caption]

Son of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Shahanshah Aryamehr, King Of Iran is Reza Pahlavi II, now mostly a res

Son of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Shahanshah Aryamehr, King Of Iran is Reza Pahlavi II, now mostly a residence of USA is the only opposition figure outside of Iran that has a chance against the Iranian regime. But my guess is that he will unfortunately ultimately fail like the rest of the opposition groups.

Peoples Mujahedin (MKO) a very disciplined and organized opposition group had close ties to the revolutionary government. The main problem is that Mojahedin is not very different from this current government and in addition was allied with the arabs, Saddam Hossein. These two vital facts makes Mojahedin very unpopular. The sect of Rajavis are fortunately finished.

This leaves us with Reza Pahlavi II. RP strong pro democracy and civil disobedience not unlike Gandhis is a rational and a great opportunity. Bein a pro democracy RP has gained some support from the left too. However his opposition and ideoligy contains some weaknesses that can be traced back to his father.

First is the elitism. Reza Pahlavi II is no Reza Pahlavi I (Reza Shah). Reza Shah was uneducated and understood his people. Reza Pahlavi II doesnt understand the reality of iranian life and his own people. Being a crown prince and lived isolated most of his life, RP is like most monarchs far from his people, the poverty and the mentality of most iranians, the masses. Unlike Khomeini and Reza Pahlavi I he is not from the "masses" and this is perhaps his greatest weakness.

Secondly, RP officially at least is a pro Israel and Fox News figure. Most Iranians are anti-arab and anti-islamist but have sympaties with the Palestinians and condemn the immense human rights violations done by the Israelis. This is another important point that makes RP far from his people.

Thirdly, the effect of the dualism in people, ie being shia muslims but at the same time zoroastrian (in the terms of culture and noruz for instance) is another example of RPs weak political program. Because RPs extreme secular ideoligy will alienate the religious masses. RP should show himself as a believer and only then condemning the mullas by using the weak economy of Iran. Human rights shouldnt be the main part of his campaign. Human right is more important to exile Iranians than Iranians in Iran.

Forth. RPs infamous fathers human right violations hasnt been condemned by RP. RP should distance himself (very hard for an Iranian) from his father and focus and the weaknesses of the Shahs government too. Iranians are nostalgic, who doesnt miss the opportunity to see Viguen at Cafe Naderi or the freedom to love and have a good life? These are all the results of the positive sides of the Shah. But the lack of political freedom is a fact. The autocratic tendences of his father should be condemnded.

This list can continue further. These four (could be easily four more) important points underline why RP is largely seen as irrelevant, and will fail.

As a pro secularism and a supporter of RP (even though im not a right wing), I hope he makes some changes to his policy and distances himself from the Fox news and pro Israel/USA camp and joins his people. However he should be credited for his strong anti-war and pro Iran activities in USA. Ill return shortly with another list, this time focusing on the good qualities of his campaign.

Which everyday common U.S.A. citizen would think that Iranian history and government-sponsored culture has changed so remarkably much over the past 100 years? I continue to be gripped by the evolving governmental conditions that are part of present day Iran. All within slightly over three quarters of a century the people of Iran have seen government move from decentralized Qajar dynastic power through the throngs of the establishment of a constitutional form which rapidly flexed and changed into a centrally powered government under Reza Khan (Reza Shah). Under his control, many internal structures came into existence and the beginning of a developed oil industry. However, with Reza Shah came the great influence of Westernization that would later mature under Reza’s son Mohammed Reza Shah and his west-stricken government. Although a combination of many factors, the European-Western influences proved fertile ground for a reevaluation of the Shah’s government and plan to make Iran the reestablished Persian Empire under his tutelage as “The Light of the Aryans”. This week has been most enjoyable. In concluding the readings in Kurzman’s “The Unthinkable Revolution” I believe I have a better grasp of or understanding of the 1978 Islamic Revolution from the vantage point of an American (an ethical view) trying to grasp the Iranian perspective. Kurzman’s style allows a continuum of events to evolve into not only a story that is most intimate and interesting, but explains the events leading up to the revolution in terms of both “faith” and “theory”. In short, none of these theories is totally satisfactory in explaining the coming together of the events that culminated in the change of the regime. In other words, each is partly instructive, but also fragmented and incomplete. This leaves the unanswered question, debatable to some, static to others, staunchly exact to others: “How much reality, especially in explaining revolt, can theory actually answer?” Hindsight it is arguable is 20/20 vision! At the same instance knowledge of fact, false understanding and misperception continually unravel as time and investigation of events take place. These “adjustments” in variations or variables of investigation continually influence investigation and conclusion, especially when associated with numerous extemporaneous factors which effect the variables considered. As Weber concluded “social reality and making sense of it is so much ‘retrospective analysis”. If I must select a more credible stance for explaining the revolution, I must rely on critical action. There were many events and socio-economic-political-military and cultural fluctuation that occurred between 1977 and 1978 that bore upon different groups within Iranian society and caused different ones to head the call for change of regime in different ways and at different times. This collectively called for action, but in various methods and times of mobilization and organization.

Perhaps analysis of the revolution should begin with Khomeinis’ call for a “guardianship” government in the mid 1960’s. If we call this the instance of calling to mobilization many more factors than those expressed by Kurzman may be found worthy of discussion. Different and perhaps more holistic analysis of the culture of the times from the 1950s until 1978 appear in the book “The Mantle of the Prophet Religion and Politics in Iran”, by Roy Mattahedeh.

Mattahedeh writes a historical-cultural account of the early life of a real but fictitiously named Iranian boy until his late 30’s in 1979. It is both ethnographic and historical-religious fact. The story is told with brief interspersions of Ali’s life with great and interesting detail of the historical and religious events and occurrences in Iran. Perhaps most interesting about Ali is that he is a sayyed (a descendant of Mohammed) who becomes a mullah. With Ali, the reader travels with him as he examines life at his mother’s feet and later his father’s. We travel his learning experiences in state school in 1948 and later to the religious madreseh ( the Islamic college) and his experiences as a talebeh, a “seeker” or student mullah By chapter six it is 1966, and Ali is now a young man, a teacher and mullah. His teaching is limited at this time, but he becomes more practiced in this phase of his life. He travels to Najaf, Iraq (Iraqi center of Shi’i learning) and there he learns under two models. One model is Ayatollah Khomeini and the other is Ayatollah Kho’i. Up until this point in time the story has been segmented with history ranging from the Arab invasions (which resulted in the Iranians accepting Islam, but retaining Persian and the Arabs speaking Persian) to the government of Reza Shah (Pahlavi) and the 1953 coupe that overthrew the power of Mossadegh and firmly established Muhammed Reza Shah until his capitulation in 1979.

At this point, it is worth a moment to transgress and reflect on the change in form of government under the Qajars to the Constitutional form in 1906 and its morph under the control of Reza Shah. As discussed earlier in week 1 the Qajars progressively became corrupt in seeking funds for exploitation and enjoyment of their position as leaders. Concessions were constantly made with Britain and Russia and sometimes others in return for money. In other words, the Qajars overwhelmingly sold out Iran and its resources for personal pleasure. After the 1906 constitutional revolution the government was in turmoil. For example, sessions of the Majiles were multiple, and records lost and under siege of those in opposition. The constitution (approved by Mazafar o-din 1906) was new and needed a bill of rights. Many questions were being sorted. In this midst, Reza Khan seizes power. He maintains the Constitution and the Majiles. Like Atwater in Turkey, Reza Khan is a military leader; he sees a westernization process being integral to a national identity of Iran and progressive government. By 1924, Reza Khan comes to the throne and is approved by the Majiles under protest from Mossadegh. Much national progress was made in the years of Reza Shah (1925-1941). Urbanization, railroad system, industrialization, reformed judiciary and education system are perhaps best known. However, Britain and other governments continued to seek to control Iran resources. Oil became prime consideration.

By 1941 Reza Shah had died and his son Mohammed Reza Shah came to power (1941-1979) except for usurpation by Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh in the interval of the late 1940s to 1953. Foreign development of oil resources led to great dissatisfaction in Iran by 1949. A final insult was that the British received more profit in taxes than did the Iranians. In a patriotic movement, the oil industry was nationalized and Majiles committee for renegotiation was headed by Dr. Mossadegh who rejected offerings. As time progressed, Dr. Mossadegh became more powerful and autocratic. An assassination attempt was made on the young Shah and he faded into the shadows of the palace. Mossadegh had become primary in the regime. Production came to a standstill and Britain called for help from both the Truman and later Eisenhower administrations. Truman rejected and called for the British to split profits more equitably, but Eisenhower fearing communist intervention appears to have sanctioned the 1953 coupe that displaced Mossadegh and reinstalled the Shah and reaffirmed him as the leader of Iran. This said it is evident that we now have a picture of the delicacy of the constitutional form of government. For further investigation and interest may be the similarities that could be drawn from an analysis of the tobacco strike of the 1890s and the oil shut-down of 1949-52.

There is no doubt that Ali’s time ( 1966-1968 ) in Iraq at Najaf were instrumental. He had learned directly from Khomeini. Khomeini, shortly before in 1965, was exiled to Iraq. He had now an open forum to speak and pose important concepts that would later develop more fully into the theme of the revolution and post revolution government formation. Perhaps an instrumental discussion is that of the “guardianship”. In the discussion on page 243, it is interesting to denote the similarities of the guardianship in the Muslim-religious sense and that of the secular component. He posed: “Muslims should not accept anything less than a fully Islamic government, with Islamic courts and a leader who is from the point of view of Islam. ‘Better than any other’ and is ‘a guardian learned in the laws.” This is a “collective” responsibility for “just jurists”. Of interest is that Khomeini had been espousing this concept for at least three years (since 1963-64) although he had not been vocal. It appears that both Ansari and Khorasani opposed the “just jurist” concept of a guardian of the people and this in turn was supported by both Ha’eri and Borujerdi. However, after their deaths Khomeini began to speak. This is of course a major reason for the June 5 incident that resulted in Khomeinis’ expulsion from Iran.

It becomes apparent in Chapter seven that during the time Khomeini is absent in 1966-68 that much change takes place in Iran. Perhaps there is no relation to the fact that the Shah had expelled Khomeini, but regardless there was much change. The Shah had begun the land reform and the White Movement. After his 1953 restoration to power, the Shah had maintained martial law until 1957. Redistribution of land deeds brought more urbanization and many reforms. In early years the Shah was widely supported and admired, but as time progressed in the early 1960s he became more influential in the government through many specific appointments. This gave him more authority. With this came the greater use of the secret police. The incident described by Ali in chapter seven is most particular to describe the concept of being “picked up” and to “drop out of the scene”. It was noteworthy to consider that Ali’s article described on page 254-5 (which lead to his arrest) has the sound of Khomeinis’ “guardianship: “In every way he rejected the hypocrite’s choice of the path of least resistance in order to choose the path of those who strive--- as all Muslims should do. He had also understood that a conscientious vanguard could lead the productive forces of society to a more just society—and the mullahs, as the conscience of Islam, should form such a vanguard.” (Continued)...

The Unthinkable Revolution: by Charles Kurzman

In fall 1978 the CIA issued a favorable report that the Shah of Iran would remain in office; safe and secure in his massive military, well trained secret police and enjoying the resources of his super-power. One hundred days later he had been overthrown in a largely peaceful and popular revolution. Where had the CIA and many other people including many Iranians gone wrong in their thinking? Why was this seemingly so safe and secure regime so swiftly and effectively dispossessed in such a short time span. Why was it that in the midst of confusion, underground pamphlets, encouraging edification by Khomeini and disruption of the pre-Revolutionary year to result in “the unthinkable revolution” of 1979?

In an attempt to analyze how this seemingly unthinkable revolution occurred, Kurzman examines the theories of revolution and applies them to the factual setting and context of Iran in the late 1970’s. The theories of interest are: political, organizational, cultural, economic, military, and critical mass. Each of these concepts is analyzed in a particular chapter of the book. The question arises; was the 1979 revolution a deviant revolution? It seems that none of the traditional theories of revolution satisfactorily explains what transpired. Or, was the revolution consistent with a blend of theory? Perhaps the answer is forthcoming once more information is known. For the time being questions remain and some facts seem to be shrouded in secrecy, some perhaps taken to the grave.

In the first sentence of the Preface to the book, Kurzman writes, “Iran first entered my consciousness, as it did many Americans’, when U.S. diplomats were taken hostage in 1979.” In addition, I too must admit that I experienced the same. I had no true understanding of what Iran had been, or was like; its people, government, and I barely knew where it was located other than somewhere in the Middle East. Day after day reports were issued as news agents feverishly covered the story of the hostage situation. Days become weeks and weeks months and time still passed. Unlike Kurzman, it was many years later before I gained an appreciation for and interest in the Middle East and its culture. As he, I must admit that even though I had long been a lover of the study of people and society I was vastly ignorant of the “mystical” Middle East and subject to many western myths about it.

As discussed in class, the government of the Shah had come to power in a coupe that displaced a popular, democratically elected government. In early years, the Shah had been popular with the people and served his function as a figurehead. However, power begets power and often corruption. The Shah experienced this sequence and through manipulation and appointment succeeded in creating a puppet Parliament that gave him increasing dictatorial power. The result was that his secret police and agents of state quieted the various khans, landowners, religious leaders and merchants. No longer did the constitution and the assembly serve to balance the power of the regime for the common interest of the society, but rather the subservient interests of the Shah...
