Friday – 15/08/2008

Friday was my “I couldn’t care less” day, as I didn’t really like any of the bands that much. Not that there weren’t any good acts performing that day, I just didn’t care for them. But it’s a festival, so you hang around the festival grounds most of the time anyway. We caught a glimpse of Heidevolk, while munching a Dresdner Handbrot (which are delicious by the way). Next we listened to Exodus. You can’t go wrong with some old school thrash metal, but their extreme pro-US propaganda was a bit much. I took a little break to have a few drinks with my mates and the next band I saw was Eluveitie, a pagan metal act from Switzerland. They actually surprised me and I will probably check out their music again soon.

Dresdner Handbrot

The main problem I have with festivals at the moment is that more and more extremely modern and new bands perform there and most of those bands are not really worth mentioning anymore. They appear, release one or two ok albums and disappear again. I would agree that it is pretty much impossible to create something so new that it has never been done before, but that’s not necessary. A few experiments or deviations from the cliché would suffice. But I’m getting sidetracked.

As I Lay Dying was next and although I have listened to a few of their albums and wanted to see them, I was bored pretty quickly. My friends took me to see Six Feet Under, which I’m not a fan of and that didn’t change that day either. I just can’t warm up to Chris Barnes’ voice. Apparently their show was quite good though. Kataklysm was next, they delivered a decent death metal show, but I was too power-out (or maybe drunk) to truly enjoy it.

Montreal's Kataklysm just released their ninth studio album, PREVAIL, and are considered one of Death Metal's most consistent bands. Being that Death Metal is not my expertise, I turned this new album on and was completely surprised. To my ears most Death Metal sounds the same: a lot of unintelligible growls, blastbeats, and Thrash. I found some of that on PREVAIL but what I noticed almost immeadiately was that I could understand the vocals and there is a real sense of melody. Maurizio Iacono's vocals are harsh and range from gut-wrenching growls to a higher scream but the main thing is that I could understand every word. One of the things that turns me off to Death, and even Black Metal, is that I can't understand what the hell any one is saying! It doesn't matter to me if the music is high quality, if I can't understand what the singer is singing, it throws off my enjoyment.

Most of the actual music sounds more like Traditional or Power Metal than regular Death although there are times where the Thrash/drum blastbeat foundation is featured. I listened very closely to the album but when I got to track 7, 'Breathe To Dominate', I realized that there was more here than just my pre-conception of what Kataklysm was about. The chorus of 'Breathe To Dominate' is, for lack of a better word, catchy.....I found myself singing along to the chorus almost immeadiately so I went back and restarted the album to seek out the other melodic hooks in the rest of the songs. I think that because the music has a balance between Thrash and Traditional Metal, there is more room for the band to explore different styles than be caught within a certain set of rules. Now this sense of melody doesn't mean that Kataklysm has become less heavy, they are a very intense and brutal sounding band. There are miles of crushing guitar riffs and blistering solos and the bass and drums sound powerful and huge keeping in line with the band's self description of their music as "Northern Hyperblast". Take a close listen to the ending track, 'The Last Effort', an instrumental that shows Kataklysm's heaviness and their melodic sensibilities, a perfect blend.

Bottom Line:
I have listened to a lot of music that's been released this year, everything from Hard Rock to Metal to AOR and now to Death Metal. Of all the new releases I've heard this year, PREVAIL is one of the albums that has received more spins than most. I honestly expected not to like this record because Death Metal is not my usual Metal but what I discovered is that this melodic hybrid of Death is starting to become part of my usual Metal. Kataklysm has opened my ears to a solid album and a genre of Metal I've been neglecting.

Ebenfalls fehlen hier die Ideen. Nach einem genialen und einem sehr guten Album scheint ihnen nix mehr einzufallen. Außerdem wirds stellenweise leicht mainstreamig :-/

Habe ich noch nicht richtig gehört, macht aber zunächst einen vernünftigen Eindruck. :-)

Children Of Bodom - Blooddrunk (erschienen)

Tjoah auch hier sehr schade :-( ist wohl das schlechteste Bodom-Album. Wenig innovativ... Ist zwar besser als vieles andere, aber ich habe einfach mehr erwartet.

Bullet For My Valentine - Scream Aim Fire (erschienen)

Ein total niedliches Album mit schnuckeliger Kuschelmusik für den entspannten Abend ;-) Teilweise net schlecht aber leider doch net wirklich ernsthaft überzeugend. Hier kann man bissl reinhören.

Tito & Tarantula - Back Into The Darkness (erschienen)

Habe ich noch nicht richtig gehört, hat aber wohl schon bissl Potential. Auch auf diesem Album ist der Stil wieder anders wie bei den Vorgängeralben.

Kataklysm - Prevail (23.5.)

Ist noch nicht erschienen, aber man darf hoffen, dass es wieder feinster Northern Hyperblast wird. Ein Lied gibt es schon hier. Es ist nicht schlecht oder so, aber ich habe nach 1x hören das gefühl, das Lied schon auswendig zu kennen :-/

Communic - Payment Of Existence (30.5.)

Wenn dieses Album auch nur annähernd so gut sein wird, wie beide zwei Alben bist jetzt, dann wirds schon sehr, sehr dick :-)

Opeth - Watershed (3.6.)

Nach dem genialen letzten Album Ghost Reveries ist dieses Album eine meiner großen Hoffnungen dieses Jahres. Einen Eindruck bekommt man hier.

Disturbed - Indestructible (3.6.)

Nachdem ich das letzte Album seehr oft gehört habe, bin ich mal gespannt, was man hier erwarten kann :-)

Auch sehr dick werden könnte dieses Album. Bei einem Lied kann man schon reinhören .

Auch hier war das letzte Album net dünn, deswegen kann man sich hier auch Hoffnung machen.

LOL... sollte ja schon angeblich im Februar kommen. Hoffentlich kann sich der Drummer diesmal wieder ein Schlagzeug leisten und muss net wieder auf Bierfässern rumtrommeln :-D Aktueller Termin ist irgendwann September (2008?! *g*).

Green Day - ? (???)

Tjoah keine Ahnung, was man hier erwarten kann, für mich bleibt Nimrod das letzte gute Album von ihnen.

Wintersun - Time (???)

Sollte erst 2007 kommen, dann 2008. Hoffen wir mal, das es das auch tut. Denn wenn es nur annähernd so gut ist, wie das Debütalbum, wird es schon seeehr hohe Kardinalität haben :-)

By the way, contrary to what Matt Sorum predicted, there is a buzz about STP getting back together. I know I'm psyched and that's all that counts. They are BACK and will be touring this summer. Will keep you posted.

Motley Crue apparently have a big tour coming up with Buckcherry, Papa Roach and Drowning Pool. No official word but they have a press conference scheduled for April 15. If you'd like to have the chance to be at the press conference, put your name in the hat at http://therockvine.com.

The Raconteurs will release their 2nd album next Tuesday and its called "Consolers of the Lonely." The album was completed and mastered in the first week of March and then taken to vinyl and CD pressing plant immediately so that no one has an advantage of hearing the music before anyone else. A video of the first single "Salute Your Salution" will also be posted on their web site on Tuesday.

Van Halen has rescheduled their NJ and NY dates and they are now Tuesday May 13 at the IZOD Center and Friday May 23 at the Garden. If you have tickets and can't make it-you have until April 14 to send back your tickets. If you need further info on that, e-mail me.
OK I have another classic album that you should run out and purchase now.

It is Bill Withers third album "Still Bill". This man just exudes coolness, c'mon you have to admit it. Talk about great R&B, he ranks right up there as one of the all time best, in my opinion. The quality of the song writing is superb and starts right off with "Lonely Town, Lonely Street"- just a finger snapping groove tune. Then onto the beautiful "Let Me In Your Life." Tracks 3-5 are again totally groovin' tunes with 4 and 5 being two of his biggest hits ever with "Use Me" and "Lean On Me." The second half highlights are "I Don't Know," "Another Day to Run" and my favorite of the whole album "I Don't Want You on My Mind." C'mon you can't tell me that you don't like this album, I defy you. Please buy it and pass it on. Play it for your kids and their friends, play it for anyone who will listen. You'll find yourself listening to this album over and over.

OK switching gears to rock or grunge or whatever you want to call it, came across Soundgarden in my I-POD shuffle and stopped in my tracks and immediately had to listen to "Superunknown" from beginning to end. If I had to pick the best album of the 1990s- this is it. Now granted it did take me a long time to like this album. It came out in 1994 and I did not start liking it until 1995 or 1996. I was thisclose to bringing the CD back to the store but I kept hearing the buzz at that time and figured I needed to hold off and give a try. It's dark and gloomy at points but it really was their breakout album and in my mind one of the reasons they broke up because they could not top this CD. The album starts off with "Let Me Drown" and the drumming by Matt Cameron (who now is in Pearl Jam) is friggin' great throughout but starts with this rockin' song. Then onto another rocking song "My Wave" and Kim Thayil's lead work on this song and throughout is solid. He doesn't get the props he deserves, a solid axeman. Then it slows down quite a bit with "Fell On Black Days" and then my personal favorite of the album "Mailman"- again dark but I love it. Then it charges back up again with "SuperUnknown" and Cornell's vocals are just flat out scorching on this one!! Track 6 "Head Down" could very well be the best song they ever recorded- so different from anything they did- again the guitar and drum playing are incredible. Then onto a "radio favorite" back in the day "Black Hole Sun"- dark lyrics but you can't get the song out of your head. Then onto the song which Cornell wrote about this man who played music with spoons, the rocking "SpoonMan"- (I saw this guy at their show back in the '90's at the NY Armory and he was just crazy man, never thought I see a spoon solo- but you know what?- it worked). The second half of the album becomes real dark and again I can't tell you why-but- I love it. Even the titles are scary but standouts are "Limo Wreck", "The Day I Tried To Live" and "Like Suicide. "The "Fourth of July" is another great song. Give it a try. Overall I'd have to say that this is a colossal masterpiece. (how's that for dramatic?).

Metallica's new album to come out in September and the word is its back to their "early days" sound.

Poison's summer tour dates leaking out, no tri-state dates as of yet. Dokken and Sebastian Bach will be joining them for this years summer tour.

The video from the Miami Fla based band Black Tide includes the motocross bad boys of the Metal Mulisha also make an appearance making this video a throwback to the glory days of '80s metal! Snoop Dogg's new album "Ego Trippin'" is getting rave reviews, some calling it his best work. The single "Life of Da Party" is growing on me, I like it.

Breathing a sigh of relief on the fact that Sublime did not make it past round 2 in 92.3 Krock's March Bracket Brawl. Soundgarden knocked 'em off. Closer than I expected though, 52% to 48%. Now I can follow the rest of the battles. Zep beat out the Who; Metallica squashed Def Leppard and Incubus (the surprise Cinderella team) beat out S.O.A.D. Love this bracket game more than the NCAA's. Fun to follow.

Finished downloading the Kataklysm discography last night at 11:00. It was late so I didn't have a chance to transfer it to my iPod. I should probably get around to that. Still digging the Dethalbum though. I discovered pretty recently that Castratikron is a really underrated song, as well as Better Metal Snake and Hatredcopter, even though Hatredcopter was released on the European Saw II soundtrack. Which reminds me... I really want to see Saw IV. I Am Legend looks good as well, but some dumb fuck at my school ruined the ending for me, even though I was probably going to do that myself. Damn you Wikipedia! Damn you!

Go watch the Awesome Flash series. It parodies a bunch of video games like Katamari, Metal Gear Solid, Devil May Cry and Animal Crossing. They're extremely random but absolutely hilarious.
