Ésta era la tercera vez que visitaba la ciudad: la primera vez tenía unos 16 años y no me gustó. Estaba enfadada con el mundo (qué raro en mi...) y, obviamente, mi estado de ánimo influyó en mi percepción de lo que se extendía ante mis ojos y nubló mi entendimiento. Doce años después, durante un maravilloso viaje con 3 amigas por la Toscana, decidimos escaparnos de los campos de vides y hacer una visita relámpago a la "Capital del Imperio". Entonces todo fue distinto: pasear por sus calles y plazas fue una sensación única, a pesar del calor y, desde ese momento, sólo soñaba con volver.

Y volví. Llevaba desde marzo o abril queriendo escaparme a Roma y al final ocurrió: 3 amigas, 6 días de octubre y toda la ciudad para nosotras. Apenas ha quedado un rincón de Roma de los que salen en las guías que no haya visitado. Y jamás había entrado en tantas iglesias: espero que Dios me haya perdonado porque subir la "Scala Santa", visitar cada templo con el que me he cruzado por el camino y cada uno de los 551 escalones que separan a un ser humano del Cielo de Roma desde la Cúpula de San Pedro, bien merece una indulgencia, ¿no?. Aunque sea pequeñita...

Ver de nuevo la Fontana di Trevi (mi monumento preferido en el planeta), sentarme y reir como una niña en la escalinata de la Piazza de Spagna, como si fuera una Audrey Hepburn del siglo XXI, aunque sin Gregory Peck al lado (aunque sí con guapísimos, y altísimos, alemanes), comer helados y pizza, la mezcla de idiomas, cada piedra, cada iglesia, cada ruina, los capuccinos de Antonio, esos extraños viajes en metro...una ciudad increiblemente maravillosa, aunque Italia y sus gentes son caóticos y despreocupados.

Todo eso me hizo echarme a llorar ayer por la tarde, cuando, tras pasar un rato en esa escalinata española que congrega a cada turista que se deja caer por esta ciudad, tomábamos la decisión de volver a nuestro apartamento frente a la Iglesia de la Sta Croce, para preparar las maletas de vuelta a Sevilla. ¿por qué lloré? Supongo que porque, en ese instante, era inmensamente feliz: me había reconciliado definitivamente con Roma y, claro, luego pensé "Quizás no vuelva más o, como mínimo, no lo haré en mucho tiempo": al fin y al cabo, éste es el tercer año seguido que voy a Italia, y en algún momento tendré que cambiar de destino turístico.

Por eso tengo grabada a fuego cada imagen de este viaje, todo lo que he visto y vivido, lo que sentí y respiré, porque no sé cuánto tiempo pasará antes de poder volver a caminar por sus calles empedradas, cuándo volveré a lanzar tres monedas a la Fontana deseando regresar. Espero que muy pronto y que lo disfrute tanto como en este ocasión.

When it comes to liking a song, the genre is always crucial. As in my previous lists, this chart will again be very heavy on rhythm and blues. However, unlike my previous yearend charts where hiphop and rap music are also largely favored, 2007 was more of a stalemate when it comes to the evolution of hiphop. Apart from strong CD’s by Kanye West (Graduation) and Common (Finding Forever), rap music is sadly on a decline in 2007. New material from Nelly, 50 Cent, and T.I. pale in comparison to their previous works, while other major rap artists will only be releasing new material by 2008.

R&B, on the other hand, is full of new talents. New female soul singers have emerged in the limelight and were given significant radio exposure such as Chrisette Michelle, Ledisi, and Keyshia Cole. Of course, Jill Scott, Fantasia, and Alicia Keys were still hot in r&b radio. Corinne Bailey Rae also continued her critical success that started in 2006. As for the males, Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, and John Legend were all successful in their sophomore efforts. Less stellar performers such as Tank, Marques Houston, and Sammie also contributed to the piano-laden ballads that saturated r&b radio. Moreover, blue-eyed soul (R&B music that is performed by non African-American performers fall into this category) was also well represented this year with the likes of Robin Thicke and AI 5 alumnus Elliott Yamin.

      Along with the Norweigan duo Stargate, Timbaland is perhaps the hottest producer of 2007. While his own album entitled Timbaland Presents Shock Value received mixed critical reviews, the CD yielded several notable radio hits.

Pop music, on the other hand, remained reliably entertaining for this year. Rihanna had the biggest hit of her career in 2007, Daughtry enjoyed massive radio airplay despite lukewarm reception from music critics. Justin Timberlake, Maroon 5, and Pink had successful albums this year, while mega-sellers like Kelly Clarkson, Celine Dion, Britney Spears, and Janet Jackson all tanked with their 2007 outputs. On the other hand, pop ballads were still relatively hard-sells in radio, especially when it comes from maturing artists like Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, and Bon Jovi. Thankfully, John Mayer and Michael Buble both bucked the trend.

The songs below made it to the list for a variety of reasons. A handful of the choices made it because this writer has a personal inclination for the discography of the singer. In some instances, the musical genre already does the trick. Still, other choices proved to be too ear-friendly for the writer to resist. Finally, some songs mirror very personal experiences in the life of this blogger through their all-too personal lyrics.

Enough of the long-winded introduction. Below are the most memorable songs of 2007 –at least from my own turf!

Leftover from Joe's independent release, New Man, out September 30 this Darkchild produced track is really nice. The song is okay to me. It feels like something more could have been added to make this song spectacular. Can't go wrong with Joe though. He and Brandy need to do a song together.

Its official: Chinese Democracy will be released in 2008 after 13 long years. Best Buy will release it on Sunday Nov. 23. Wow, I can’t believe it. I wonder if Dr. Pepper is going to follow through on their promise to give everyone, except for Axl and Slash (why not Slash, he had nothing to do with it?) a free can of soda. If you are going to see the new movie that is out today- “Body of Lies”- the ending credits will have a song from the album and it’s called “If the World.” This tune actually features the guitar work of both Robert Finck and Buckethead, who have both departed from G’N’R.

Oasis has released “Dig Out Your Soul” and customer reviews on I-Tunes give it an average rating of 4. Rolling Stone wasn’t as gracious as they gave it only 2.5 stars. I listened to the 30 second previews and some of it doesn’t sound so bad- maybe that is a sign that it is bad as I am not a big fan of this band.

Saliva has comeback this week with a new single “Family Reunion” off their fifth studio album “Cinco Diablo” which is set for release on Dec. 16. Singer, Josey Scott, has been sober for the past 9 months and credits Nikki Sixx for setting him on the right path. Imagine that? You know it’s 2008.

Tesla has released their seventh studio album- Forever More- check out the review on my page already listed.

Seal has recorded a cover version of Sam Cooke’s extraordinary “Change is Gonna Come” and I’ll give it thumbs up. It’s hard for me to hear someone else sing this song but then again it is so special that a contemporary artist such as Seal can keep the music of Mr. Sam Cooke alive and relevant to today’s generation. “Fix It” by Ryan Adams & the Cardinals is the new single released off of their upcoming album “Cardinology” due out Rocktober 28. Take a listen, I like it.

Joining the cast of Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew on VH1 will be Steven Adler (original drummer for Guns & Roses) and Tawny Kitaen (remember her? She was married to David Coverdale and was in Whitesnake’s video “Here I Go Again”).Jeff Conaway will be profiled again. The first show airs Fri. Rocktober 17.

Forgot to mention this but the nominees for the 2009 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class were announced and they are: Metallica, Run-DMC, The Stooges, Jeff Beck, Chic, Wanda Jackson, War, Little Anthony & the Imperials and Bobby Womack. I say Metallica, Run, Stooges and Beck are a shoe-in. Little Anthony & the Imperials should get in. The others are a long shot in my opinion, although all of them had some great tunes.

Naughty By Nature is reuniting and will release a new album in the first quarter of 2009. Their last appearance together was in 2006, a one night engagement at BB Kings. Say “Aaay, Oooh, Aaay, Oooh!!!”

The Black Eyed Peas are due to finish their fifth album “The E.N.D.” next week. No timetable for release but should be before the end of the year. Will.i.am is predicting that this will be the last holiday season that you’ll be able to walk into a record store and buy one. I think he is right, Virgin Records is the only store I can think of in NYC that sells music.

Paul McCartney is furious with McDonald’s for using his image in his hometown of Liverpool. McCartney is a long time vegetarian campaigner and also an ambassador for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. I know someone who doesn’t like the Beatles but this has to put a smile on her face.

Eddie Van Halen is getting married again. Over the summer he asked for Janie Liszewski’s hand in marriage. Janie also serves as his manager.

Ok this week’s I-Tunes shuffle landed on “Jailbreak” from the same album title by Thin Lizzy (TL). This song definitely cracks my top 10 songs of all-time. No matter how many times I hear it I have to crank it up- LOUD.Jailbreak was the sixth album released by the band from Ireland with bassist and singer, Phil Lynott, at the helm. Unfortunately, the music world lost Mr. Lynott back on Jan. 4, 1986 at the young age of 36 to multiple organ failure. The boys formed back in 1969 and if you try and keep up with the members of Lizzy it will make you dizzy. The band is still together today. Jailbreak was really TL’s break-through album when it was released in March 1976, most likely due to the world-wide known tune “The Boys Are Back in Town.” Scott Gorham (still currently with the band) and Brian Robertson were the twin guitarists for the album and that was the sign of the times back in the 1970’s as Skynyrd and the Allman’s had multiple guitarists. It also inspired bands like Iron Maiden who covered “Massacre” (great song) from TL’s “Johnny the Fox” album.

This classic album kicks off with the aforementioned “Jailbreak.” This song also takes me back to MBIA’s boot camp class where we worked out to this song. The second track “Angel from the Coast” highlights that double sound on guitar. The guitar solos are sweet and Brian Downey’s stick work really keeps this song flowing. “Running Back” is a nice soft song that has the traditional TL sound. “Romeo and the Lonely Girl” makes me feel like I should be at a pub in Ireland with a mug in my hand singing along with the rest of the bar as we wail “Oh Poor Romeo Sitting out on his own-ee-oo..” C’mon this is a classic. Side one ends with the guitar driven “Warriors”- how cool is the echo effect on Lynott’s voice? This song is just flat out cool. The guitar solo is amazing and I am astonished on how this band doesn’t get the credit it deserves. Put a set of good headphones on and listen to this beauty.

Side two kicks off with the often played “The Boys Are Back in Town.” This song is huge. Think about it, when you hear it you instantly know it and I know it brings you back to some where in your life. This song makes me think of all the summers I spent with my grandmother, grandfather and uncle in Otisville, NY. “Friday they’ll be dressed to kill down at Ginos bar and grill.” Go back and take a listen and let it bring you back. “Fight or Fall” is a soft song where Lynott’s vocals are crystal clear and you can tell this man had a passion and compassion for the music he made. The production of his vocals is really different in this song and the guitar solo behind his voice is real nice. “The Cowboy Song” is my all-time favorite Thin Lizzy song and it is the third track on this side of the album. I love the bass work and the drums as they break into the rocking part of the song about a minute into it. “Roll me over and turn me over let me keep spinning till I hit the ground.” This song has everything you want in a rock tune- a grooving beat that has its ups and downs, finger snapping, “air guitaring” and sing out loud lyrics. This classic album ends with the smashing “Emerald.” Listen to the arrangement in this song- it sounds like it was recorded yesterday. Again with a good set of headphones you are quickly off into another world. The dueling guitar solos will have you pushing the headphones tighter to your head so that you are completely engulfed as the song rides out into the sunset. Whew what a ride. C’mon you know have 35 minutes in your car to listen to this classic album or 35 minutes on the train to work. No more excuses, take my word you will not be disappointed. The more you listen to this album you realize why Thin Lizzy was voted into VH1’s top 100 hard rock acts of all time. Crisp and clean!!!

Back on this day in 1979, the film “The Rose” starring Bette Midler was released. The film is loosely based on the life of Janis Joplin.

Yet another fresh track has leaked off John Legend's upcoming album,'Evolver' (in stores Oct. 28th). The new track, "Quickly", features Brandy's beautiful vocals and has a global pop feel to it. I have to be honest; I'm happy Brandy and John didn't go the predictable ballad route with this track. In case you didn't know, Brandy also has a new album releasing this year, 'Human' (in stores Dec. 9th).

Here is a new track from John Legend from his upcoming album, Evolver featuring one of my favorite artists, Brandy. This track feels different to me, but in a good way. I see Brandy's influence on John Legend, by the way he switches up his harmonies. I dig their voices together, they complement each other very well. I hope this track does be come a single, I'd love to see a video for it.

It’s opening night of Portland Fashion Week tonight at 14 Square (1330 NW Overton) with Icebreaker kicking off the festivities along with a production dreamed up by the Art Institute of Portland. The alumni of AI will reveal their repurposed graduation duds aka the “little black dress” contest.

 The first ever all-green fashion show – think sustainable runway, sustainable hair and makeup – was produced here in Portland last October. And although we are used to all things green here, the fashion world raved. Nay, the entire world (OK those that cared) raved.

 This year sustainability has grown and the venue rocks. For the next five days … from Oct. 8-12 … 20 strong, mostly local designers will each launch their spring collections. Check the PFW website for specifics and tickets. Heavy sigh followed by big yawn. Yes, we know. It’s all green baby.

 What’s in store for those who care about such things on the eve of Portland Fashion Week 2008? Well here you go....

Among the indie designers:

Sarah Wallace who interned under none-other-than Sofada owner Alice Dobson. Wallace just opened Lucia in the Pearl District about six months ago and business is reportedly booming.

Sofada’s Spring line is all you would expect from Alice Dobson. She wasn’t Best Debut of the New York Fashion Show for Paper Doll Magazine several years ago for nothing. Here her oh-so-soft, sensual fabrics expand femininity and grace.

New to the show this year … Christopher Bevans, worn by fans Jay-Z and John Legend, was just featured last month in Rolling Stone Magazine with a three-page spread.

Other PFW designers include Collier, Sameunderneath, Idom, Icebreaker, Nike Considered and more! 

R&B stars John Legend and Raphael Saadiq will be heating up stages across the country as the duo prepare to launch their nationwide tour next month.

According to Billboard, the singers will begin their thirteen-date showcase at a variety of small venues primarily among the East Coast in major cities including Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington DC, Greenville and Charlotte.

The artists are expected to use the tour to support their latest albums from Sony Records with Legend's Evolver hitting stores at the end of this month while Saadiq's The Way I See It recently landed in stores a few weeks ago.

Beginning Wednesday, November 19 in Minneapolis, the tour will run through December 13 in Durham, North Carolina.

In related news, Legend's highly anticipated album is set to arrive in stores later this month. Making a strong buzz with his hit single "Green Light" with OutKast's Andre 3000, Legend told Billboard his third album will show off a never-before-heard version of himself.

"This album doesn't sound like me," he revealed to Billboard. "The tempo is faster than I've done before. It will be different for people, because Evolver has a bit more instrumentation than I've used before. But it's not like you won't recognize the artist-it's me." 

Legend's upcoming project also features appearances by Kanye West, Estelle and Brandy.
