In the video section of handiwork, you may have watched Randy Pausch's Last Lecture, in which this brilliant and eloquent professor actually gives the lecture he would if he knew it would be his last. Though provoking, funny, and inspiring, I highly recommend you all watch it and take to heart some of Randy's lessons.

Randy died today of pancreatic cancer at the age of 47, but as he says in his last lecture, he accomplished pretty much everything he'd ever wanted to do, professionally and personally. From childhood dreams of being in zero gravity to becoming a college professor, Randy figured out something that so many people miss- how to recognize happiness in life, rather than constantly striving to "get" happiness. Realize that happiness is not an end goal, it is what happens along the way to other goals.

Create your own meaning and recognize your own happiness. Those are lessons that we can all stand to hear regularly in our personal and professional lives.

I've been looking for ways to try and help boost the family income. I have come to one conclusion. I am not marketable. Strangely enough, I almost don't care. The part of me that doesn't want to make sacrifices in the family budget cares, but the true me does not.

I went to college right out of high school. I had no clue who I was, let alone what I wanted as a career. I had taken four years of Spanish in high school, so I just kept going. I thought about being an English or Social Studies teacher, but my professors convinced me that it would be too difficult to find a job. Spanish was the way to go. I got my certification. But I didn't love it.

I never did end up as a Spanish teacher. I mostly worked in an office, and I taught Language Arts one year in a Christian school. Then I got pregnant, and I've been home since.

So what can one do from home? I'm not interested in direct marketing. Call center jobs require a designated and quiet room - not conducive to having a dog and two kids! I'd be fired for sure. I don't know how to make anything (except dinner - and sometimes that is questionable ;) ).

Honestly, my dream job right now would be going to the hospital and holding babies. I remember when Nathan was in the neonatal ICU. There was a baby in there whose mother did not want her. I wanted to hold her so much. That's what I would love to do. Hold babies that need it, but not have to wake up through the night and take care of them. Yep, my dream job has no paycheck attached.

So, we're back to cutting back. The beast inside screams. I want! I want!! I really wish it would just shut up.

Success! I've gotten applications for an Irish Pub/Grill and a Steelers bar, both are which are about a mile away from my apartment. Back to the server lifestyle...

You might be wondering why I don't want to pursue a "really real" job. Well, basically, it's not what I want to do with my life. My life, my love, and my lady are <S>the sea</s> disquieting and, if I may get a little political propaganda on you, this is not a great economy to be self-employed. Thus I need to get something little to tide me over for the time being. Plus jobs like this allow me to be more mobile in my schedule, which is good for when craft show season comes back in November.

I spent a good 2 hours on the beach reading one of my favorite books, The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich.

Typically, I try not to directly mix work and blogging but here goes:

If you've poked around my blog enough, you know that I'm a partner at Zekiah Technologies in La Plata, MD. We are currently looking for up to four .Net developers to support various projects. ESRI development experience is a plus. Depending on the project, you could find yourself working with ArcGIS Server, ArcIMS, ArcSDE, Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL. Some of the projects are supporting systems that have been in place for a while and require migration from older technologies. All will involve the development of new capability.

Once again, work location may vary depending upon the project but it will either be in Dahlgren, Norfolk or Reston in Virginia (especially Dahlgren). We are a consulting company that does development and implementation for our customers. For these positions, customer requirements specify US citizenship. Foreign travel may be required.

I chose to blog about this because I and all of my partners will be at the ESRI User Conference in San Diego and it seemed like it might be a convenient place to talk since so many people will be there. We will be staffing booth 612 so feel free to stop by if you're interested.

For those who read this and may be thinking this way: we are not at liberty to sub-contract any of these positions.

Feel free to contact me via e-mail if you have any questions: bill@zekiah.com

I don’t know what’s up with my constant Blogging lately. I have about five other drafts that I (

I don’t know what’s up with my constant Blogging lately. I have about five other drafts that I (Still!) haven’t finished, some of which I started weeks ago! Maybe I just feel the need to share my thoughts and feelings to others, on a more personal level...

One thing I don’t know is where I’m going in life. To be honest, I think the future is a scary prospect, and my future to be precise.

I currently don’t have a job of any sort, part-time or full-time. I’ve constantly been told by my family that I need to get one, and I realise that I do. The reason I’m slacking or do slack in my efforts to pursue a job opportunity is not because I am lazy, nor is it because I can’t be bothered or don’t want to work; that I think getting a job will ’spoil the fun’; quite the contrary, actually. Simply put…I don’t believe in myself.

As devastating as it sounds, it’s the truth of how I feel. I’ve had quite a few job interviews in the past, but in each case I didn’t get the job; some employers didn’t even bother replying back to me when I wrote out the job application and sent it in to them. To be honest, a part of me feels a hint of bitterness and resentment towards employers, and towards Society in general.

Let’s face it, employers like people who are confident in public: fact. I, on the other hand, am not that. I’m not confident speaking (Though I feel I’m improving), and while I most certainly can work physically, I would probably be useless in a shop/restaurant environment where communication with people is essential. It’s a shame, I think, as I think that being in among people would help me to improve my communication and confidence skills. But, I suppose it all comes down to my past…

I was never the confident kid in school, being the shyest in my class. This resulted in me being teased, bullied and humiliated by the other pupils (And teachers...); resulting in my self-esteem, self-confidence and self-belief shattered. I think it’s this past history of being laughed at and scorned by others that has placed such a mistrust in me towards people in adulthood. I know it’s not a good attitude, of course, as it can destroy potential relationships as well as job opportunities, but I suppose it all boils down to me.

I think I need to regain that confidence and trust in others that I sometimes find hard to have.

Another reason I try to avoid getting a job is because of my incompetence. Every job that I get into, something always goes wrong- I always mess something up and the whole thing becomes disastrous. It’s like I have this curse hanging over me, this bad luck that comes into play every time I get a job, just waiting for the right moment to strike.

As I mentioned before, I am most certainly capable of working as I am physically fine. I go jogging regularly, I lift weights frequently and I watch what I eat. So, it’s not the physical that is the problem, but the mental.

To be honest, I really like the hypnotist, Paul McKenna (Though not in a homosexual way!), and while his “Instant Confidence” book and CD haven't personally worked for me yet, I do find him, his thoughts and his methods very intriguing. In one chapter of “Instant Confidence” entitled, “Self-Belief” he writes this;

“Do you believe in yourself? Do you think it matters? In one of the most detailed studies ever conducted into the effects of self-belief on performance, the psychologist Albert Bandura discovered that a person’s genuine beliefs about their capabilities can be a more accurate predictor of their future levels of performance than they had produced in the past.

In other words, the way you think about yourself in relationship to the challenges you are currently facing in your life will have a profound impact on your ability to succeed. The mechanism by which it works is called ‘the self-fulfilling prophecy’…”

© Copyright Paul McKenna 2007. All rights reserved.

Do I believe in myself? I think that's an easy question to ask but an even harder one to answer. I mean, I certainly have the ability to work physically, but sometimes doubt creeps into my mind. Part of my mind thinks, "Yeah, I'm physically capable; I can definitely do it!" but the other part thinks, "What's the point in trying? I've never succeeded before so how will this time be any different?".

Maybe I'm too worried about what others will think of me and maybe that's stopping me from pursuing what I want to do in life. Maybe I'm scared of being judged and ultimately rejected...having my reputation destroyed in the process...Maybe it's time to stop caring what other people think of me...

“Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.”

This is how Pay gossip tries to attract user participation. The trump card? Get paid $0.5-$1 when someone buys gossip ticker.

Their products help application developers make “crazy” cash. Social network users complete a series of offers like applying for credit cards and then pass the deal onto a certain amount of people. If said people also complete the tasks, then the users gets the reward and the developer gets a piece as well. SocialCash’s Claim to fame: free condoms, and free iPods scheme. The condoms worked as did the iPods and the company has been around for almost a decade.

MyGallons lets users buy gas credit at current prices. Users, in turn, are betting that gas prices will continue to rise and that their purchase will ultimately save them money. You're hedging the price you pay for gas. In today’s uncertain economic scenario this hedging adds value to daily existence. There is a catch to MyGallons, however. Users must pay an annual fee of $29.95 in addition to various overdraft and processing fees. It's currently available in over 200,000 locations nationwide.

To get started, go to supervirals.com and search through the current brands that are soliciting a campaign and what they are offering for a prize. Once you’ve chosen a brand, check out the brief of the company provided and the come up with an idea that best represents the brand. Upload your idea before the actual competition begins and then when the clock hits zero, start sharing your idea with as many friends as possible to help increase your idea’s score. The idea with the highest score at the end of the competition will win the prize.

It seems like an eternity since I've the pleasure to be at the round table, but tonight I'm back on AETN's "Arkansas Week," along with Arkansas Times columnist Ernie Dumas and University of Arkansas journalism professor Hoyt Purvis.

On the docket tonight: the continuing saga of Lu Hardin's $300,000 pay package at the University of Central Arkansas, the state's job market, the lottery and adoption proposals, and Barack Obama's world tour.

Obviously, we've taped the show before today's UCA board of trustees meeting, set to get underway within the hour. But there was lots to be said about Hardin's salary mess, including thoughts on the Arkansas Freedom of Information Act and Dumas' point that this was a story that, had it been handled correctly, should only have been a one-day story. Sadly, that's not been the case.

Check us out at 8 p.m. tonight on AETN. You can get the podcast here later this afternoon.

UPDATED: The Associated Press' account of the UCA board of trustees meeting here. Apologies all around, including from Hardin:

"With my expertise in this area, I should have known better. It was a mistake and I apologize," Hardin told the board.

I had planned on writing a post this morning about disappointments. I'll get to that in the near future, but my plans were changed by a passing image.
I was on my way to work when I saw a sign twirler sitting at the corner where he was going to be spending his day. He was sitting in the grass by the sidewalk, staring blankly at nothing in particular. I zoomed past him, as did countless other cars, buses and trucks. It was a very provocative image: a person, not so different from me, mentally preparing to do what he had to in order to find the strength to get through the day. I wondered if this was his only job or if he had lost his job of choice and was willing to do whatever he had to in order to make it. Does he have a wife? Kids? What debts does he carry that make him willing to stand in the Sacramento summer heat all day waving a sign for slightly better than minimum wage?

Melody and progressions and lyrics somehow found their way to my pen. This happens to me fairly often, where I just puke out some lyrics. Driving past this young man caused me to wonder about others who are in what they consider to be a very difficult time in their life. It is part of my existence as well. How many times do we drive or walk past someone who is experiencing the hardest or worst day of their life?

Save Me

Sitting in the grass with his headphones on
Got 5 more minutes to rest
Before he's gotta get up and get to work
Try to do his best.
Spends all day just staring out
Cars come and go in line
He used to wave a holy banner
Now he just waves a sign.

Save me.
Save me.
Jesus save me.
I need You right now.

Everyone shakes their head and tells her
That's just the way it goes
Even she knows the answer:
You reap what you sow.
You got what you deserve
Mirror shows the shame in her eyes
Isn't someone gonna tell her
That those are all just lies?

Save me.
Save me.
Jesus, save me.
I need You right now.

Is this a let down or just a time out?
Will something ever just give
Or is this just the way it is now?
Hard to stomach the life you live
It's hard to keep on hoping
Hard to find the right step to take
Well maybe right now's the right time
To just plop down and wait.

Save me.
Save me.
Jesus, save me.
I need You right now.

Right now would be a good time
For You to come through for me...

More coding exam thoughts: composition versus inheritance

Well, the reason why I needed an answer to that last question on UML has been posponed until Wednesd

Well, the reason why I needed an answer to that last question on UML has been posponed until Wednesday (it was a phone interview, following up on the exam), so now I get to take more time to look at that, and other interesting things. :)

One of the other questions that I left blank on the exam was, "What are the advantages of using composition as opposed to inheritance?" I had no idea what they were talking about, as far as composition was concerned. Actually no, I lied, I had a vague snippit of memory from Head First Design Patterns of some strange character saying "a MallardDuck is-a Duck"...no wait...more like "a Thing is composed of a Something"...yeah as you can see, that didn't really help.

Anyway, the only resource I had at my disposal at the time (and the only one I felt ethically comfortable using lol) was THE Arnold/Gosling/Holmes Java book, which really did nothing for me here, surprisingly. So I left it blank and came back to it today (to prepare for that phone interview, remember?), and with a very small amount of Googling, I found this.

Apparently when people say "composition", they mean something like

[sourcecode language='java']
public class MallardDuck
{
private Duck duck;
// add methods with the same name
//as the corresponding ones in Duck
// only call duck.whatever() in the body of this.whatever()
}
[/sourcecode]

In contrasting to subclassing Duck (
public class MallardDuck extends Duck
or
public class MallardDuck implements Duck
). Arnold et al calls this "forwarding" because the Duck class has been "forwarded" into the MallardDuck class. So to speak.

So ok, now that we know what it is, why is it better than inheritance? According to the article I linked to above, composition is better for code reuse and updating, but that's...really all I got out of it. So I broke out the aforementioned design patterns book (would I be a complete dork if I said that was one of the best books ever written?) and that REALLY cleared things up for me. It's not so much an issue of subclassing Duck, it's an issue of subclassing things like FlyingBehavior, which defines how a duck flies. Different types of ducks have different types of flying behaviors, so a Duck HAS-A FlyingBehavior. (For those following along at home, it's page 22-23.)

With inheritance, the behavior of the subclass is set statically at compile time, which doesn't allow for new things to be added to the subclass on-the-fly, unless you modify the superclass. With inheritance, all of the behaviors of the superclass MUST be inherited by the subclass; with composition, we can pick and choose (so we can pick certain FlyingBehaviors over others, giving a different one to MallardDuck, RubberDuck, etc.). With composition, you can add new things to your code without modifying what you already have, which you sometimes don't have access to. (See page 85)

Anyway, I thought it was interesting. Composition is mysteriously left out of a 114/140/intro programming course, but it makes sense...it's more of a technique than a property of the language (as inheritance is).

I just got into Reno. I'm working on a
dramatic true-crime show for a major cable
network. We just checked in to our hotel,
just off the strip.I half expected to be
worked to death but it turns out that our
ONE interview isn't until mid-day tomorrow.
That leaves me with the rest of the evening to
gamble or check out a performance with my crew,
Todd & Brian. We got our $45 per-diem (cash
that the crew receives when they travel) for
our quick two day trip and I suspect I'll be
giving this $90 bonus moolah to some slot
machine later tonight, though I'm not much
of a gambler.

I was talking with a cab-driver today & he
mentioned that the state of the economy has
slowed things down for Reno & Vegas lately.
Now that he mentioned it, I do recall seeing
2 full page casino ads in the July issue of
"Wired" magazine.

While I felt bad for him and all the other
people getting laid-off in such luxury
destinations, it did make me feel more
confident in my decision to work primarily
in News and Entertainment. TV has been a
consistent employer to me over the years.
When the economy is down people tighten
their belts, make some home cooked meals
and...watch TV. I can honestly say that
the only time that film and television ever
let me down was right after 9/11. This
had a lot to do with Production companies
not wanting to fly their crew's around
for work. But, knock on wood, even when
the chips are down, TV will still pay
my mortgage. You know what, I don't think
I'll be playing the slots machines
tonight after all...

About proper office wear.

vs.
Now I don't need to ramble on about the difference between the two outfits, but the one on the left would be classified as GOOD office wear. The one on the right? BAD office wear. Her outfit? Leaned a bit closer to the right outfit than it should have. I know it's Friday but we don't practice Beach Casual Fridays.

I speak on this because I've gotten yelled at a couple times from a couple different employers about pants that may have been a little low and shirts that showed off a little too much cleavage. But I learned my lesson and am now a frequent shopper at ATL, JCrew, BR, and all the "sophisticated young professional" stores out there. Even if they are...dare I say...not exactly in my budget :X

However, never in my ten years of working various jobs with varying levels of casualness, have i dressed like I was going to the beach. Personally, I don't think skirts that are more than an inch above the knee are appropriate and nor are low cut sleeveless shirts. But that my friends, is how our intern is dressed today.

She's been known to err on the side of dare I say, inappropriate, though I don't believe anyone's said anything to her. Once wearing a slightly low cut, a little too short sun dress one day, and today it's a cute little floral flouncy, ruffle skirt that is about two inches too short with flip flops. The shirt, is covered by a cardigan (ok. Two points for that much), and it is not so low cut that it's a problem. But the skirt? Too much

She looks like she's going to the beach. I saw her and i was like "really??? is that appropriate???" I shouldn't talk about the flip flops, because I wear them too. Rarely around the office, I have at least four pairs of heels under my desk that I can change into on a moments notice since I know that some higher ups in our office hate hate HATE flip flops. Not to mention, we all know flip flops are unprofessional, but they're comfy, cool and easy to walk to and fro the metro in.

Man, I wish I was going to the beach. Unfortunately for me, I'm nursing a budding sinus infection that has my head feeling three times it's actual size and a nose that I can't breathe out of. Kind of sucks. But, at least I'm appropriately dressed?

Call me judgmental but I come from experience man and I don't see her getting pulled into a conference room to have a chat with the boss lady like I had at Job #1 in DC (evil Georgetown Law Firm).

-----

In other news, I want to go shopping. Ann Taylor Loft is having an amazing "Buy one get one 50% off" sale this weekend! Only! I want to go spend my Forever 21 gift card I got for returning stuff. I want to go to the gym for the 9th time this month (in 3 weeks!) so i get my $50 reimbursement. Unfortunately, my body is achy, my head is stuffy and really? I just want to go home and sleep. Maybe I'll go over after work tomorrow afternoon. I'm too tired for now :(

I certainly don’t expect or plan on being laid off and there are no indications to the contrar

I certainly don't expect or plan on being laid off and there are no indications to the contrary. I am trying to be of increasing value to my employer as time goes on. Hopefully, it will be noticed.

You never know, however, what a day will bring forth.

Lifehacker referred to an article in today's New York Times entitled "If Your Being Laid Off or Expecting to Be" by Marci Alboher [http://shiftingcareers.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/07/25/if-youre-laid-off-or-expecting-to-be/]. Here are highlights I though were worth noting:

"...We began by talking about the things you shouldn’t do after being laid off, like saying disparaging things about your former employer to anyone other than close friends and family.

We then moved on to some of the more practical elements — making sure that your résumé is in order, that you have something presentable to wear to interviews and professional meetings and that you have spiffed up your online presence, if that is appropriate in your field.

We spent a good bit of time talking about touching base with all the crucial people in your network. And in times like this, when so many layoffs are driven by the slowing economy, there really is no need to feel any shame when picking up the phone to share the news with someone and ask for support, job leads or introductions. Often it’s the weak ties — the friends of your closest friends, for example — not the strong ties, that lead to opportunities. So make sure that you are systematically trying to reach those people. Linkedin [http://www.linkedin.com/] is a very good tool for locating people who are one or two degrees away from your immediate circle. Another way is to start putting out the word to everyone you come into contact with that you are open to introductions.

Finally, I suggested that people do some writing. While it may feel like an odd time for gratitude, you may make some good impressions by composing a few handwritten thank you notes to those who have helped you in your career. Similarly, if you can craft a graceful departure e-mail thanking colleagues for their support, providing your personal contact information and saying you are open to any leads or introductions, again you may be pleased with the results..."

Don't you LEARN from Stereotypes? Doctors, Geisha and All That Jazz

A post in Racialicious yesterday about stereotypes opened a discussion between me and another poster

A post in Racialicious yesterday about stereotypes opened a discussion between me and another poster. The other poster had replied to a thread on stereotypes that she would like a stereotype free home for her child. There's no such thing. Everything out there is a stereotype. Cristina Yang (doctor of Korean descent) from Grey's Anatomy is as much of a stereotype as Cio-Cio San (Madame Butterfly). Oh yeah, I forgot. A doctor is POSITIVE, while a geisha who commits seppuku is not. Especially if she gives up her life because she proves "tragic beauty and nobility by sacrificing yourself for the white man and abandoning your hapa kid!" (post number 61). I guess she doesn't realize that Pinkerton, the American character is a stereotype too. The stereotype of the Evil American who Just Doesn't Care. The authors of the story (can't give Puccni all the credit, since it was adapted from a John Luther Long play, which was in turn, adapted from a Pierre Loti (yeah, French dude) work) were trying to show the West's cruelty.

Another poster said:

...whatever Puccini and his collaborators had in mind, somehow that’s not what’s being seen on the stage–that’s why Madame Butterfly is such a contested piece of art. Especially when Madame Butterfly is still seen in a country, like the US, that continues to stereotype APIA women as “submissive girls.” So, Madame Butterfly is seen, therefore, as another vehicle that folks just looooove as art but perpetuates that stereotype.

I don't understand this point because I also see the evilness of the west (represented by Pinkerton) and the east (represented by Butterfly) being a victim of the evilness. However, one stereotype I DO see is that Butterfly is a love-struck teen.

So really, what *IS* supposed to be shown on TV, film, etc when it comes to non-whites? You can't make an Asian woman too submissive/tragic, because it's stereotypical/racist. She can't be a bitch either, because that's the dragon lady stereotype. She probably can't be a doctor (or accountant), because that's what lots of Asian parents want their kids to become (nor can she be a music prodigy....Asian parents stereotypically send their kids to CLASSICAL music lessons). Maybe that's why writers have trouble putting non-white characters on TV. They're worried that someone will be turned off. In any case, it's probably better to confront stereotypes and learn why it's wrong than to ignore it all together.
