I don't know if when I first heard him that I could hear his pain coming through but these days, I believe that I hear pain when I listen to him sing. The cover for his album Future is also predictive of his death.  He knew that he would be beaten by food.  His huge body already dependent on oxygen for survival and also unable to sleep horizontally is wrapped in a traditional Hawaiian cloth as he faces out over an ocean rainbow is sadly beautiful.  I felt that way too and when I discovered the lap band, for the first time I thought my rainbow will be farther away than I ever expected.  I wonder if Iz would have known, if he could have paid for one... if insurance would have supported him.

For me, the battle is no longer up hill, my rainbow is one of hope and years of additional life with my loved ones here on earth.  Every week I feel smaller and along with this comes energy, hope and a feeling of security that I have rarely felt.  I write today for those of you who still feel as Iz did, no matter what addiction it is that has you in it's grasp, and offer you an alternative rainbow.

Hawaii is the Rainbow State

This is the first rainbow I have captured on film. We see rainbows here on an almost daily basis, but usually when we are on the freeway and it just isn't a convenient place for taking pictures. OC just won't stop when I ask him to. He is surprisingly obstinate about such things.

I learned about Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, or Brudda Iz, before I moved to Hawaii, but I did not learn of his death until (just before I moved here) much after the fact. Even so, I still grieve for him as do most of the islanders. When Iz died the world lost a beautiful, peaceful soul.

Whether or not you've ever heard of Brudda Iz, give your soul a few moments rest by watching the video below. You'll not only enjoy a music idyll, but you'll get to see some gorgeous Hawaiian scenery as well.

Starting All Over Again - Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (2001)

What a great, great song. I first heard this song when it was released by Mel & Tim in the 1972. And since no true artist can resist a great song, it has been covered by many, including Sam & Dave, Johnny Taylor and Clarence Carter to name a few.

This version by Israel, better known as "Bruddah Iz" or "Iz", appeared on a great collection of alternate versions of his best-loved songs as well as tracks never before heard by the public: it is entitled "Alone in IZ World" and was released in 2001 by Mountain Apple Company . An incomplete "Mona Lisa" and "Over The Rainbow" covers are included on the CD, but I really could not tell if the rest of the LP was cover tunes or not since the songs were Hawaiian. Therefore I am departing from my normal posting format and am going to step back to share with you the original hit version of this song by Mel & Tim in 1972 and Hall & Oats performing an acoustic cover version live in 1991.

Nearly everyone in the ukulele community (and dreadlock community) have heard the news about Jason Castro, finalist on this, the 2008 season of American Idol. We knew he sang. We knew he strummed guitar. We didn't know... HE UKES! Yep, Jason sent chills of excitement through young girls and ukulele players alike across the country (and in HI) with his April 8th performance on American Idol. He came out swinging with a ukulele, planted himself on a stagestool and played his own rendition of IZ's own rendition of 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow'.

To my surprise and relief, all the judges loved his performance though Paula Abdul called his uke a 'guitar'. We think he did a great job, too. Good work, Jason. Keep that ukulele hot!

"...one afternoon, Santa Monica KCRW radio host Chris Douridas cued up 'Over the Rainbow' as part of his program 'Morning Becomes Eclectic,' to cheer up listeners on a rainy day. After it faded out, Douridas announced the  800 phone number on the back of the Facing Future CD. In two days, Mountain Apple received over 2,000 calls from southern California, people crying and asking about the music, many of them stuck on the freeway when they heard it.

"Movie producer Martin Brest bought the rights for use in his film, 'Meet Joe Black.' As the end credits rolled, movie audiences stayed in their seats to listen to 'Over the Rainbow.' One of America's most recognizable melodies, first made popular by Judy Garland, the tune had always embodied optimism, depicting a world where dreams really do come true. Israel's version was something else entirely: haunting and delicate, stripped down to a lone voice and a ukulele, an unexpected minor chord contrasting, almost unconsciously, against the happy lyrics of wishing upon a star. A little rough there tonight, judges? There was little pleasing Randy and Simon. If Paula weren't there, the night might have devolved into a bout of extreme fighting.
     Tonight's theme was songs of inspiration, a convenient segue to tomorrow night's "Idol Gives Back" show. The producers probably thought, let's work the people up tonight so they'll loosen their purse strings tomorrow. We'll see if it works — at least it's for a good cause.
     First up was Michael Johns on a rockin'-good "Dream On." The judges' response was, of all the inspirational songs that's all you could come up with, dude? You rocker wannabe, you! Get back in your R&B bluesy corner. Upstart! Then Paula, sentence stylin' in her trademark weird lingo, said his high notes sounded like her chihuahuas. Oh...kay!
     They weren't much kinder to Syesha Mercado who covered Fantasia Barino's hit "I Believe." Not bad, but the judges said it "lacked a wave of emotion." You Fantasia/Whitney wannabe, you! Get back in your own style corner, whatever it is. Oh...kay!
     Jason Castro did his take on Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's ukelele arrangement of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow." I LOVE  Israel's take. While Jason had moments of nice flourishes and falsetto, he rushed through the rest bereft of emotion. Had he added that component, this could have been great. It was just same old same old JC to me. Not so with the judges. Randy called it the "hottest, blazing molten hot" and Simon deemed it "fantastic!" Oh...kay!
     Kristi Lee Cook is so fed up with the negative comments and bottom three stool sitting each week that she's got a "what's to lose" attitude. That could be her salvation. Tonight was her best performance yet — with Martina McBride's "Anyway" — and she seems to be hitting her stride in the genre she's settling into. Simon added that "you look like a star tonight."
     David Cook sang Our Lady Peace's song, "Innocent." Not his best performance and the judges concurred. Simon swiped at him for his "pompous white jacket." So random, Cowell, trés random. 
     Carly Smithson took an angry turn, Simon said, with her rendition of Queen's "Show Must Go On." More beating up by the judges. It wasn't Carly's best performance, but if you pay attention to what she's doing vocally, this girl is brilliant! She has fantastic phrasing.
     David Archuleta invoked "Angels" for inspiration. He did a nice job and Simon complimented his song choice, then took a nitpicky swipe that he sounded "nasal." Oh...kay!
     Brooke White closed the show with her rendition of Carole King's "You've Got A Friend." Her facial expressions throughout made me think of a pun on King's other hit, "Do the Loco Emotion." Emote! Emote! Emote! Her bottom lip drooped farther and farther as the judges deemed her pleasant but not original.
     Kind of a rough night, dawg.

His career began when he and his older brother, Skippy, formed a group in their hometown near Honolulu. The two performed together until the latter died in 1982. The band continued on for some years but it was Iz's haunting voice, with its searing yet limpid falsetto, that captured the popular imagination. Its simplicity and the emotion in the voice of the singer - Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwo'Ole or just "Bruddah Iz" - got to me in a way that the over-produced Judy Garland movie version couldn't, with its mix of hope, sadness and frustration. Funny how we humans need music to pull these emotions out of the skeins of our souls.

Unfortunately, Iz died 10 years ago. You have to wonder what he could have done with that voice of his, had he survived. Would the ukelele have enjoyed a renaissance in its popularity, as it had during the 1920's? But we have his albums, and we have YouTube videos set to his music. It's a nice legacy.

Das Lied "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" kennt wahrscheinlich jeder von euch und ich fand es schon immer toll. Aber dieser Mann hat mir eine Gänsehaut vom Allerfeinsten verpasst. Seine Stimme ist einfach nur der Wahnsinn. Er "performt" nur mit sich selbst (das ist ja auch einiges ;) ) und einer Ukulele. Sein Name ist Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, er stammt aus Hawaii und ist am 26. Juni 1997, im Alter von nur 38 Jahren, gestorben.

Am Ende dieses Videos trägt anscheinend ganz Hawai seine Asche zu Wasser. Diese Szene hat mich ziemlich gerührt!!!
