Tucked snug in Greensboro's underground music scene, one performance by this experimentally-driven performance art band can turn any evening into a night at the MOMA. With a carefully created instrument tying the keys on an electric typewriter to a keyboard, Invisible is a musical experience you have to see to believe.

Metamaterials Breakthrough Brings Invisibility Closer
New optical materials that bend light

Metamaterials Breakthrough Brings Invisibility Closer

New optical materials that bend light in unusual ways could lead to much tinier transistors, microscopes that are able to peer at smaller cellular structures, and—with a good deal of engineering—even invisibility cloaks.

Two new types of metamaterials, as the light-bending stuff is known, were developed by researchers at the Nano-Scale Science and Engineering Center at the University of California, Berkeley, and described in separate papers in Nature and Science. One is the first three-dimensional material to have a negative index of refraction, which allows it to bend light in the opposite direction of what you would expect from any other material. The other, also 3-D, doesn’t have a negative index but still provides some negative refraction, and unlike previous metamaterials, it does so in the visible part of the spectrum.

Natural materials have a positive index of refraction, which is a measure of how much they can bend a beam of light passing through them. Stick a pole into a swimming pool, and the portion below the surface appears to jut off at an angle, because of the difference between the indices of refraction of air and water. If the water had a negative index of refraction, the part of the pole below the surface would appear to be above the water.

An index of refraction has an electrical component (permittivity) and a magnetic component (permeability). Building a metamaterial with a structure having features substantially smaller than the wavelengths of light it’s meant to refract causes resonance between the atoms in the material and the photons. This reverses the permittivity and the permeability, making the refractive index negative.

This property of metamaterials opens the door to whole new ways of manipulating light. For instance, in cases when a normal lens cannot resolve anything smaller than half a wavelength of light, metamaterials could make a superlens that could resolve below this so-called diffraction limit. That could open up new possibilities in biomedical imaging, allowing scientists to look at the proteins inside cells. It would also allow the photolithography equipment used to make computer chips to build even smaller features than are currently possible without having to find new sources of smaller wavelengths.

Fish Out of Water: A fish swimming in water appears slightly closer to the surface than it really is, because of the difference between the refractive index of air and that of water. If the fish were swimming in water with a negative index of refraction it would appear to be swimming above the water.

One of the new metamaterials, described in Nature, consists of 21 alternating 30-nanometer-thick layers of silver and 50-nm-thick layers of magnesium fluoride, a dielectric. Each layer is laid out like a fishnet, with lines 565 nm wide crosshatched by lines 265 nm wide. The material produced a negative index of refraction for infrared light with wavelengths between 1.5 and 1.8 micrometers. That broadband response is more useful than the single frequencies other metamaterials can handle, says Xiang Zhang, the professor at the Berkeley center who directs the research teams and is coauthor of the two papers. More important, the loss of light passing through the material was very low. That’s because the light essentially hopped from one dielectric to the next, with little of the absorbing resonance taking place in the metal. “It’s like crossing a river,” says Zhang. “You keep your feet on the stones and you don’t get wet.” The figure of merit used to measure light loss in a structure was 3.5 in this case, a great improvement over previous materials, most of which have been less than 1.0, Zhang says.

The second metamaterial consisted of a thin slice of alumina with pores etched into it and silver nanowires deposited into the pores. The nanowires were 60 nm in diameter and spaced 50 nm apart. Although the permeability didn’t differ from a normal material’s, the permittivity was reversed if the light entered the material at just the right angle. The researchers used the nanowire structure to negatively refract red light. Getting further into the visible or even the ultraviolet part of the spectrum, where wavelengths are even shorter, is an engineering challenge the group is working on, Zhang says.

David Smith, director of the Center for Metamaterials and Integrated Plasmonics at Duke University, in Durham, N.C., called the work “a very significant milestone.” The fishnet structure, he says, is not yet practical because it has the negative index in only one direction. “Still, I’m just really knocked out by how clean a result they were able to achieve at optical wavelengths using this structure,” he says. “The Zhang group experiment should really prove to the skeptics that negative refraction at optical wavelengths is a reality.”

David Schurig, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at North Carolina State University, in Raleigh, says the fishnet material could quickly lead to smaller waveguides and other devices for telecommunications because it’s already operating at telecom wavelengths.

The prospect that really captures the imagination—using these materials to cloak a person or an aircraft in a shield of invisibility—is much farther off, though Schurig says he’s optimistic about it. There’s no physical reason why you shouldn’t be able to direct light around an object and send it on in its original direction, rendering the object invisible. But one big challenge would be overcoming the loss of light as it travels through several centimeters or more of material. “If you want to cloak something the size of a person, you need a figure of merit of something like 1 million instead of 3.5,” Schurig says

I know I'm a bit late in seeing this movie called "The Invisible"- came out in 2006 I believe but I am slow to watching my Netflix movies and this was top of my queue. After watching this movie, the Fifi (fiancee) has requested that she takes the lead on my queue. Why?

This movie sucked. It's about a dude that's sorta dying but needs the person that killed him to help living people find his body. This movie was done way too artsy for no friggin reason. How do you make a crappy shitty teen movie artsy? It's like giving Animal House a Shakespearean feel. Doesn't happen. Doesn't work.

Let's put it this way: the only way the kid lives is by having the girl who nearly killed him crawl into bed with his dying body. What? Huh? The Fifi said that we have watched some crappy movies together and are still a couple. She is impressed. 0 poop sticks out of a potential healthy 5.

Invisibility may now be a real possibility according to report published in the Journal of Science and Nature (here). The BBC has a nice breakdown of the article (here) which uncovers a new material which allows light to be bent around objects.

A material that is able to reverse the effect of light refracting, thus rendering objects invisible has major implications for the world of creativity and technology. Whilst the first thought for most people will be impersonating Harry Potter and donning an invisibility cloak to become an instant spy, the practical and creative uses could create major changes aesthetically in the world around us.

Predator Suits coming to a retail store near you ...one day!

We are all aware of the benefits of Glass and other transparent materials but the ability to hide or simply reduce the visual impact of objects on demand is an exciting prospect.

Ideas for use of Invisible materials in the real world:
- Chairs and Tables without legs. (I'll buy those!)
- Buildings that appear to float by hiding structural elements
- Lighting (eg: streetlights) that defy gravity.
- Hiding of ugly infrastructure (eg: pylons).
- Amazing visual transitions for live theatre.
- General visual bulk reduction of any object.
- "Soft glass" - practical applications would be enormous.
- Curtains that trap heat, but still allow light in.
- Invisible ropes would have many uses.
- Art. Insane sculptures that appear to defy physics.
- Fashion - new materials will create amazing design possibilities.

Car Manufacturers will save a fortune making ads like these...

Wells' The Invisible Man - All may become a reality. Researchers at the University of California at Berkeley have developed the "invisibility cloak," a material that can control the direction in which visible light travels around an object. Now - let your imaginations run wild!

Although probably years away from becoming a reality, the work which has been funded by the American military, could render almost anything invisible. According to the Times Online - "Xiang Zhang, the leader of the researchers, said: “In the case of invisibility cloaks or shields, the material would need to curve light waves completely around the object like a river flowing around a rock.” An observer looking at the cloaked object would then see light from behind it – making it seem to disappear."

As exciting as this sounds do we really want to be able to just disappear and how do we regulate the use of this technology to the benefit of society not its detriment - can you see me now?

Look for more information in Science and Nature this month!

Scientists say they are a step closer to developing materials that could render people and objects invisible. For the first time, researchers were able to cloak three-dimensional objects using artificially engineered materials that redirect light around the objects. Previously, they were only able to cloak very thin two-dimensional objects.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="410" caption="A prototype of the invisibility cloak being developed."][/caption]

The new work moves scientists a step closer to hiding people and objects from visible light, which could have broad applications, including, unfortunately military ones.

People can see objects because they scatter the light that strikes them, reflecting some of it back to the eye. Cloaking uses materials, known as metamaterials, to deflect radar, light or other waves around an object, like water flowing around a smooth rock in a stream, concealing the object by stopping the reflecting light.

Metamaterials are mixtures of metal and circuit board materials such as ceramic and Teflon. They are designed to bend visible light in a way that ordinary materials don't. Scientists are trying to use them to bend light around objects so they don't create reflections or shadows as well

It differs from stealth technology, which does not make an aircraft invisible but reduces the cross-section available to radar, making it hard to track. This will make the planes, or what ever the meaterial covors invisible to the eye as well as radars.

How much fun would that be? Beyond the fact of checking out shower rooms where hot chicks scrub themselves and all the other fun invisible stuff we thought of doing when we were thirteen that involved seeing boobs, the possibilities are endless. I would roam around from place to place seeing how things are done and how people act when nobody was around. You know, like check out an operation, watch the zoo handler feed the lions delicious meat in the cage, go see midgets watching television at home on their wee little couches eating snacks. You could sneak on to 1st class, see any movie you want with out paying for it, and hang out back stage with Metallica. Being invisible would totally rule. You go scientist guys! You rule to!

WASHINGTON — Scientists say they are a step closer to developing materials that could render people and objects invisible.

Researchers have demonstrated for the first time they were able to cloak three-dimensional objects using artificially engineered materials that redirect light around the objects. Previously, they only have been able to cloak very thin two-dimensional objects.

The findings, by scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, led by Xiang Zhang, are to be released later this week in the journals Nature and Science.

The new work moves scientists a step closer to hiding people and objects from visible light, which could have broad applications, including military ones.

People can see objects because they scatter the light that strikes them, reflecting some of it back to the eye. Cloaking uses materials, known as metamaterials, to deflect radar, light or other waves around an object, like water flowing around a smooth rock in a stream.

Metamaterials are mixtures of metal and circuit board materials such as ceramic, Teflon or fiber composite. They are designed to bend visible light in a way that ordinary materials don't. Scientists are trying to use them to bend light around objects so they don't create reflections or shadows.

It differs from stealth technology, which does not make an aircraft invisible but reduces the cross-section available to radar, making it hard to track.

The research was funded in part by the U.S. Army Research Office and the National Science Foundation's Nano-Scale Science and Engineering Center.
