What if expats were the solution?

Last week, I got an e-mail from “Vente Privée” (a French company that sells big luxury brands products at super discount price on its website – and it’s by invitation only). I usually receive a newsletter that keeps me updated about the last offers. But not that time.

This e-mail was about the company, and its European development. Vente Privée wants to enter the British market, and wants me to invite some of my new British friends into their online community of VIP shoppers.

I assume they tracked my IP in order to know I was moving to Glasgow. That’s quite intrusive, but after all, it is quite clever.

Anyway, that is an interesting marketing strategy. And we (the expats) are the key players of it. We are cheap, and we are already living in the targeted location which makes us a very valuable resource. That’s why Vente Privée wants us to be some kind of sales reps.

In our globalized world, with an increasing number of expats, we can imagine that these kinds of approaches get more and more popular in Marketing Departments.

Some of the Globalizer crew made it back from London this past weekend after attending the very successful Ad Tech 2008 show. Having attended the prior two London Ad Tech shows, we were impressed by the enthusiasm and turnout at this year’s show which seem to be more than double the size of the show just 2 years ago. The show had a good mix of UK, European and US companies and there was lots of business to be had. It finally looks like US internet companies are starting to see the light when it comes to the UK and Europe as there were many more US attendees at this show versus prior years and far more success stories being told than in prior years. Here’s looking forward to Ad Tech NY and next year’s London Ad Tech show.

Millions of people are exposed to thousands of advertisements each day.
Advertising top spot contains one form of advertisement or another.
One of the most effective method of Magic Advertising top spot could be through television.
Television advertising has visual appeal, and can be used to convey a
mood or image for a brand as exciting and interesting, which in fact,
may be dull and boring. Because of their flashy depiction and catchy slogans,
products are made out to be better than what they are. Advertising top spot is a way
for corporations to get their message across of why they are better than everyone else.
This fierce competition follows the notion of ?Survival of the fittest?.
Because of this, human beings of all types are bombarded with Advertising top spot constantly.
The mantra of advertisements is that products can fill the void in ones life.
They make people think that, even though they may have good lives,
they can make it better by purchasing excessive or extravagant items.
The goal of Advertising top spot is to plant a seed in peoples? minds.
Once the seed is planted, it keeps on growing and growing until they do something about it.
This is called Revenue Magic a solid tactic of Advertising top spot.

Hi Welcome to my first Blog. In this first post I will share with you the techniques I have used th

Hi Welcome to my first Blog. In this first post I will share with you the techniques I have used that have enabled me to get into top 10 and 20 position in Yahoo and Google search engines in only 3 months with zero knowledge, zero training in SEO and zero link exchange or any other methods that some other gurus may teach you. These are all my techniques that I have discovered through a lot of hard works, trial and error and burning the mid night oil figuring out the methods.

Just a brief history about myself. I am currently an engineer working for a international project management consultant. I don't know anything about internet marketing 5 months ago i.e. beginning of 2008. At that time, I don't even know what is the difference between a blog and a website. I don't know how to upload a website nor how to create a blog then. And I only know how to upload video to Youtube as recently as 3 weeks ago (end of August 2008).

For your information, this is my first time using Wordpress and only my second blog. Before that I had created a Blogger but was not active in it. Meaning I have not done anything to it other than upload a few posts. So I hope you can bear with me if my Wordpress blog turns out not looking exactly the way I wanted.

I get to know about internet marketing and was attracted by its potential as advertised by some internet marketing coaches in local newspaper. So between November 2007 to January 2008 I started to attend some preview seminars but did not signed up because all of the courses were very expensive. They cost from SGD$2000 (USD$1470) onwards. Only in March 2008, I decidedly to sign up with this internet marketing super affiliate guy because it is the cheapest with a lot of bonuses.

Everyone keep telling me it is very difficult to rank high in Yahoo especially in Google and 10 times more difficult if you want to rank high for very generic short keywords e.g. two words keyphrase. Even the guy I took my first and only internet marketing course from, told me the same thing.

My website promoting affiliate products ranks in the first page of search result for some very generic key words. How generic? Well, is "dog food" generic enough? How about even more generic like "pet food"? I achieved this high ranks in only 3 months into internet marketing business.

How do I did it in only 3 months? And some of the keywords I was able to rank on top of the list and even out rank the merchant's website that I was promoting.

Well to be frank, I am surprise myself. In August 208, I realised that even though I have stopped my PPC for 2 months already, my opt-in rate of subscribers remains high. Here is my story I will reveal to you how.

I started my affiliate marketing in May 2008. For my first attempt in affiliate marketing, I decided to promote a products related to dogs. So I created a single page landing page and started to market it with my limited knowledge in SEO. Initially I was not even able to find my own website in Google or Yahoo. After about 2 or 3 months of fine tunings, I noticed that even though I had stopped my PPCcampaign for about 2 months already, subscribers still keep coming in with the same rate as before. Needless to say, sales beginning to go up as well.

So in late July 2008, I started to check my website ranking by manually typing into Google and Yahoo search box for some keyphrases that a visitor will normally search if he want to find out about the information related to my affiliate product. At this stage I still do not know how to check my ranking more effectively.

I decided to installed Google Tools into my Internet Explorer. There is an option to add in "Page Rank". So when I go to my website (it is a single page landing page for the only affiliate product I am promoting), the page rank shows 3/10. Wow! I was so surprise and happy! It actually showed some green bar.

How my website managed to climb from ranking of 0/10 to 3/10 in short space of only 3 months without me learning any of the SEO techniques or linking that some of the gurus out there propounded?

You see, for the past 3 months, I have been spending a lot of time in fine tuning and experimenting with my website late into the night and sometimes as late as 6am or 8 am the next day. In the weekdays I still need to go to work by 9am. So you can imagine, how tired I were in the office.

Come back to the ranking. Here is a list of how my website ranked for the following keyphrases in Yahoo and Google (please note that I started checking my ranking for these keywords only 2 days ago i.e. September 11th, 2008):

A . With Yahoo (as of September 13th, 2008) - Fifteen phrases consisting of 2 to 3 keywords rank in first page. Out of fifteen, three phrases consist of 2 keywords.

B. With Google (as of September 13th, 2008): Three phrases consisting of very competitive 3 keywords rank in the first page.

I may put a Camtasia video recording to show proof of my ranking here when I have the time later day.

I have went through some of the hard works. I still consider myself a relatively newbie in internet marketing. As a relatively newbie, I am able to understand the needs of a newbie in order to start off in getting their website into the first 20 position in Google and Yahoo. The techniques I have used to get top ranking does not involve high power SEO techniques or complicated techniques. Infact, my technique is the most easiest way you can find. It is so simple that even a grandma can do it. (Just a note, it is simple now for you because I have done all the hard work and burnt countless hours every night fine tuning and experimenting).

I am currently composing all the techniques I have used into an ebook. In the mean time, wait for my updates.

Cheers!

Mr. Dith survived through nimbleness, guile and sheer desperation. When the Khmer Rouge won control in 1975, Mr. Dith became part of a monstrous social experiment: the expulsion of hundreds of thousands of people from the cities and the suppression of the educated classes with the goal of recreating Cambodia as an agricultural nation.

To avoid summary execution, Mr. Dith hid that he was educated or that he knew Americans. He passed himself off as a taxi driver.
In November 1978, Vietnam, by then a unified Communist nation after the end of the Vietnam War, invaded Cambodia and overthrew the Khmer Rouge. But he fled when he feared that they had learned of his American ties. His 60-mile trek to the Thai border was fraught with danger. Two companions were killed by a land mine...

When I first heard about the Killing Fields, it was from reading a book that appeared in 1985, “The Death and Life of Dith Pran.” There was a film made based on this book, the Killing Fields. While horrifying because it is based on the genocide that Dith Pran lived through, it is both historical and inspiring to have read about one who has suffered so much, lost so much, and had the fortitude to not only start over but help change the world by surviving. Without Mr. Dith and Mr. Schanberg, and without Mr. Dith's survival, the story of Cambodian genocide by the Khmer Rouge may never have been so eloquently communicated and the world educated about what happened there.

In the 60's, in a different country, the Cultural Revolution also suppressed, tortured and imprisoned many of China's educated citizens. For anyone who thinks the Cultural Revlolution in China was only about wearing Chairman Mao jackets, they are seriously unaware. Nien Cheng was a survivor of those years, and her experiences are recounted in Life and Death in Shanghai. While graduate school business students are not required to read books regarding cultural and national history and issues, I often think they should. When I was in business school, our international business ethics course provided rich materials and cases that only began to open the door to the complexities of cultural nationalism that every nation, including the United States, "owns."

When I took International Marketing, we were all assigned several different countries to develop a general marketing plan for a specific, assigned product. Fortunately one of my team members was just as interested in understanding the culture and social moires of our "country" as I was, and we did well in our analysis and product presentation, despite that fact that it was not a European nation. One of the things that struck me was that in general, if the country was not a western European nation, remnants of EuroCentric focus that most US citizens have clearly showed. What was appalling was when one group, which was assigned China, came out with "Chairman Mao Beer" and came up with a 'celebratory campaign' honoring the Cultural Revolution. How clearly off the mark they were. I hope they either learned more about that period of time and what it did to segments of the educated Chinese population, or stayed away the field of International Marketing.

Translation is noted as the biggest obstacle, which isn't a surprise, given Americans aversion to languages. The resources are available, so it looks to me like it's simply an unwillingness to pay for it that's the problem. Farming translation out to local dealers is suggested, but that's dangerous too. Consistency with brands can be lost, & unless you speak the target language, quality control is gone.

I can understand doing less internationally in direct mail & television, but I'm surprised only about 10% are doing more internationally in digital marketing. This is 1 way to leverage existing assets cost effectively, especially in some very wired countries of the world. Apparently American companies haven't seen that light yet.

Examples are named with companies that get at least 1/3 of their revenues from outside of the United States, yet they must not be allocating marketing budgets commensurately with that. Interestingly, they quote a guy who mentions financial & people resources as constraints, but then only comments further on the growth funding issue. The people issue can be even more difficult to solve.

They interviewed 274 people in this survey, so it seems to be pretty comprehensive. It looks to me like there are still many American companies intently focused on the US market & just taking what the rest of the world gives them. There is little proactive push to determine who the best customers & partners are on a market-by-market basis. Simply passively growing your business by waiting for the world to come to you is far from optimizing your opportunities.

June 25, 2008 Globalizer had our coming out party yesterday at the Online Marketing Show 2007 at the Business Design Centre in London. Not that there was any question, having attended the past few Ad Tech London shows as well as last year's Affiliate Summit London, but clearly the attendance and excitement at online marketing shows in the UK has grown tremendously. The Online Marketing Show had a nice mix of affiliate networks, SEMs, consultants and of course mobile marketers. The seminars were all completely packed as attendees looked to gain any shred of new knowledge. The show was a success and we were able to make some great new contacts which will translate into some offers on the GlobalizerNetwork that you won't find in any of the other US based affiliate networks. Of course a trip to London wouldn't be complete without catching some good music and lucky for us, Radiohead just happened to be playing Victoria Park during this trip. A few of us checked them out and Radiohead did not disappoint. Highlights of the show included the Bends, Karma Police and closing numbers 2+2=5 and Paranoid Android. Here's hoping some great bands are playing when Ad Tech London 2008 rolls around...

Owners or operators of places of business (establishments) that are involved in the production and distribution of medical devices intended for use in the United States (U.S.) are required to register annually with the FDA. This process is known as establishment registration. There is a fee for annual establishment registration for some establishment types.

Most establishments that are required to register with the FDA are also required to list the devices that are made there and the activities that are performed on those devices. If a device requires premarket approval or notification before being marketed in the U.S., then the owner/operator should also submit the FDA premarket submission number (510(k), PMA, PDP, HDE).

The amendments to the Medical Device User Fee Modernization Act require that after September 30th, 2007, all registration and listing information be submitted electronically, unless a waiver has been granted.

Registration and listing provides FDA with the location of medical device establishments and the devices manufactured at those establishments. Knowing where devices are made increases the nation’s ability to prepare for and respond to public health emergencies.

Firms like FDARegistration.net are able to quickly and securely process FDA registration submission online for US and non US companies. They offer fast and reliable registration solutions and U.S. agent representation for companies seeking to comply with FDA regulations and FDA standards in order to market their medical device products in the United States. Registering medical device facilities and listing medical device products is the first step in having sucess in the U.S. market.

Last week, TNS Retail Forward issued a new study, "Strategic Focus — China's Retail Landscape," which indicated that China will soon surpass Japan as the world's 2nd largest retail market by 2012.

Really, this is not news. But it does reconfirm what many global brands and retail chains have been anticipating for a few years now---China is a massive market with a huge profit potentials, so its time to get in while the market is still relatively young.

However, that entry has been a bit of an uphill battle, often unanticipated by many foreign companies who come to China with elaborate plans for fast growth. Whether its red tape or just a cultural clash, it seems as if many of these countries forget that that they cannot just simply apply the business model that worked at home in China. There's a learning curve that needs to be faced.

At the WWD Beauty Summit this week, L'Oréal China's President and Managing Director, Paolo Gasparrini raised some interesting points about marketing the beauty brand and product Chinese consumers. (Gasparrini established L'Oréal's business in Mainland China in 1997.)

"Chinese consumers are very demanding and very curious. We had to start from zero and explain to people who we, L'Oréal, was, as a company and our history," Gasparrini said. "Then they say, 'OK, we understand that you represent this big company, but why do you think that you are legitimate to sell products to us? Our skin is different from yours. Our hair is different from you. Our taste is different from you.'" ---WWD.com (May 30, 2008)

Long story short, L'Oréal needed to prove to the Chinese consumers as a foreign brand that they understood the Chinese hair and skin. So they set up industry in China and built a research and development facility to focus specifically on the needs of the Chinese market.

One interesting point that Gasparrini made how Chinese women want to see their own ideals of beauty reflected in marketing materials, rather than the aesthetics of French beauty. This is a smart move considering how in the U.S., much of the images of Asian American women is based on a Western perception of Asian beauty (i.e. Lucy Liu). Not necessarily the best move, if your company or brand is trying to reach out to the Asian American market.

Sharon Stone - Dior, originally uploaded by SerenityF.

Celebrity spokespeople are notorious for being unpredictable, though they are also a sure fire way to get quick and easy press for a company or brand. The problem though is that when celebrities behave badly, it will take your brand's name through the mud with it.

Case-in-point: Sharon Stone, former spokesperson and model for Christian Dior

What I don't understand though is why Dior would select a celebrity who was supposedly pro-Tibet for their advertising campaign in China. That's just asking for trouble. Perhaps its was a budget issue (though I doubt it considering the profit margins on a tiny bottle of perfume), in which they decided it would be best to go with a rather washed up B-list Hollywood actress, rather then an A-list Chinese actress.

Now thanks to Stone's poor choice of words during an interview with the Chinese media at the Cannes Film Festival on May 25th, Dior is now in crisis communications mode in order to make amends with the Chinese people. It's interesting to note that this is not the first time that Ms. Stone has put her foot in her mouth over global issues and policies--Tanzania, malaria and mosquito nets.

For me personally, the interview was rather painful to watch. Not only were the comments rather cold and insensitive, she sounded like she was dumbing down her vocabulary to talk to a little kid, or perhaps she's just being true to form--a dumb blond. See the whole clip here:

In retaliation, Chinese netizens have been quick to respond with countless YouTube videos to voice their anger at Ms. Stone's comments.

Hopefully other brands and companies will heed this cautionary tale and choose their celebrity spokesperson a little more wisely. Choosing an individual whose lifestyle and opinions are in-line with the product and connect with the target market. A celebrity spokesperson should is not just simply a face and name to increase press. He or she will be come the representative of the brand, whose words and actions (good or bad) will be associated with the brand.

I've had quite a few questions lately on how to move towards a globalized website.

And the marketer in me responds my looking at the clients current business and what the client is marketing.

Save Through Knowledge

It is important for any online business with a desire for international expansion to know what is involved in website globalization.

Why?

There are things you can do today, no matter how many international sales you have already made or how many you have in the channel that will save you time and money later when you actually need to move towards website localization and website globalization.

This is the key reason why website globalization is such a buzz word.

But, remember, the internet is mainly a medium to communicate with your clients and prospects. Of course, it does have other major roles in your international business expansion. But it is first and foremost a means to communicate.

Know Your Current Business Needs

You need to clearly identify where your company is in the realm of international business before looking at the other functions of the internet for your international expansion.

If internet is a way to communicate with your clients and prospects, what will you be saying to them? Where is your current internet marketing?

Here are the basic types of international marketing with a short definition:

Domestic Marketing = selling your domestic product to your domestic market

Export Marketing = selling your domestic product to your foreign markets

International Marketing = adapting your product and selling it to one country

Multinational Marketing = selling your foreign product to a small group of countries

Global Marketing = selling one product to the whole world

Most online businesses are basically in the Export Marketing phase.

They may say or think they are in Global Marketing phase but international and multinational marketing are between the two phases.

A Global Marketing company has all of the market knowledge to be able to position their product well throughout the world. They have gone through the other stages of international marketing to have the knowledge, experience and power. These are generally very large companies.

Plan Your Next Step

Once you know where your company is on this simple scale, you will find it easy to see where your company needs to go to. It is generally one step up.

Trying to move more than one step up at one time needs mega investment, and is not easy.

Let's say you are currently in the Domestic Marketing phase and want to jump straight to the International Marketing phase.

This jump is possible. You will just pass over Export Marketing but will require a lot more investment in market research. It is possible and has been done by countless other organizations..

Take Action Towards Your Next Step

If you were to spend a little time actively doing Export Marketing you will gain foreign market knowledge that may surprise you.
