If so, this was made when an imported Gravatar account had an email address not matching an account with WordPress.com. If you log into Gravatar with your email address and password for the account, you will be presented with a page to finish creating your account. You can then choose a new nickname that will replace the long g2-* name.

If you want your Gravatar account to match your WordPress account name:

1) Log out of both Gravatar and WordPress.

2) Log into WordPress with the username you'd like to match your Gravatar account name.

3) Log into Gravatar with the user info associated with that account.

4) Add the email associated with that account to your Gravatar account.

All done!

I never heard of Gravatar. I never visited the Gravatar site. I never signed up for it and never asked for it. And yet the first thing I see on that site is that I am "logged in as Laetizia". My old, Dutch email address was there - now defunct - and it said something about how I can't change that. The FAQ furthermore told me that they are not deleting accounts "at the moment". Like Facebook, once they got ya they don't let go.

What's up with this? Another fantastic new tool to identify myself everywhere - but these boneheads apparently don't realize that there are people who use two names. Like an SL and an RL name. These boneheads didn't realize that an email address changes. That I don't want to run around with a stack of passwords to log in and out everywhere and change identity and that I was just fine with the way things were, thank you very much.

I don't know about you but I flip out over this. I want a big red button that says NO, I want an email address of some governmental body which will force them to pull my account, I want to hack into their servers if need be and blow the whole spiel up. If my email address appears on the site of an organization I have never heard of before, the alarm goes off. And if they log me in just like that, two alarms go off. And if on top of that they tell me they do not erase accounts, the damn fire brigade pulls out of the station in my head.

I think it is coupled to Wordpress, host to this blog - and Torley's. And I am mad enough now to pull the whole blog because of it. It's one thing to force feed me a new gadget with an option to opt out, which is the old Microsoft way. But that was on your computer, not on the internet, and that at least had the option to switch off. Goodbye talking paperclip nonsense. But this blog... first they gave me their 100% off-the-mark "possibly related posts" that I cannot get rid of, and now this!

I was going to start a Real Life themed blog on Wordpress. But a) it automatically logged me in as Laetizia which is pointless, and b) now they pull this one on me. So I don't think it is going to happen.

Kemudian Anda akan disuruh memilih mau memakai avatar dari file di harddisk, Internet, atau memakai wordpress avatar. Silakan pilih yang mana, bagi yang belum punya bisa pilih avatar dari My computer's hard drive. Selanjutnya Anda tinggal browse file di harddisk Anda. Kemudian Anda akan diminta meng-crop dan menggeser-geser agar avatar Anda bagus.

Setelah itu Anda diminta memilih rating avatar Anda, apakah G, PG, R, atau X. Pilihlah G jika avatar Anda boleh dilihat semua umur, atau X jika benar-benar termasuk pornografi.

2. Menambah Email

Sekarang Anda bisa menambah email Anda agar memiliki gravatar khusus, dengan cara mengklik tulisan add a new one (atau klik di sini). Sebuah email konfirmasi akan dikirimkan, dan Anda tinggal mengklik link yang ada di dalam email tersebut. Jadi setiap email akan memiliki gravatar yang berbeda-beda.

Standardmäßig holt sich Wordpress diese Bildchen ja durch Gravatar, so weit ich richtig informiert bin. Nur was ist, wenn der Kommentator jetzt gar keinen Gravatar-Account hat und somit auch kein mit ihm verknüpftes Bild, das ihn in den Kommentaren eindeutig identifiziert?

Nun, dank der, nennen wir sie einfach mal "neuen Funktion" von Wordpress kann man nun jeder Emailadresse ein bestimmtes Icon zuordnen lassen. Was dabei allerdings rumkommt, finde ich mehr als witzig, da neben dem normalen grauen Profil eines Oberkörpers oder einem weißen Kästchen auch das ein oder andere verrückte Bildchen hinzugekommen ist. Hier mal ein paar Beispiele:

Die Frage, die ich mir nun stelle ist: Welche von diesen Möglichkeiten soll ich wählen? Oder doch einfach beim grauen Profil bleiben oder die Anzeige gar ganz ausschalten? Na ja, wir werden ja im Laufe der Zeit sehen, für was ich mich letztendlich entschieden habe ;)

Oh, und nicht über dieses an sich langweilige Thema wundern. Der Beitrag sollte nur zeigen, dass ich das Blog nicht vergessen hab und da ich weiß, dass es Leute gibt, die sich darüber freuen, hier was lesen zu können, will ich diese ja nicht ewig auf dem Trockenen sitzen lassen. Jetzt muss ich mich allerdings wieder auf meine mündliche Prüfung morgen konzentrieren und vor allem mal rausfinden, wann genau ich da überhaupt erscheinen muss. Allen, die auch demnächst in ihre mündlichen Abiturprüfungen gehen wünsche ich auf diesem Weg (noch mal) viel Glück und Erfolg.

Caso você não seja um blogueiro, um modo simples de ter o seu avatar nos comentários feitos tanto nos blogs Wordpress, quanto em outros serviços é criar uma conta no serviço Gravatar.

O usuário cria uma conta gratuita, escolhe a foto que deseja utilizar como avatar e a atribui a um endereço de email válido. Daí por diante, toda vez que o usuário deixar um comentário em um blog ou fórum que oferece suporte ao serviço Gravatar, o sistema automaticamente reconhece o email preenchido pelo usuário e adiciona o seu avatar ao comentário deixado.

Simples, não? Crie a sua conta no Gravatar e deixe aqui o seu comentário personalizado com foto.

Tra le ultime novità vi è una nuova gestione della visualizzazione degli avatar proprio e dei propri lettori che lasciano un commento.

Prendendo in prestito dal sito ufficiale l'immagine sottostante andiamo a spiegare le nuove caratteristiche.

Il nuovo pannello è visualizzabile all'interno del menù raggiungibile cliccando su Settings (in alto a destra, nei blog dove si hanno privilegi amministrativi) e dunque Discussion.
Le opzioni disponibili sono:

• Attivazione e disattivazione della visualizzazione degli avatar, che si riflette sulla loro visualizzazione all'interno del proprio blog;
• Scelta del livello di "censura" (il cosidetto rating) per gli avatar da visualizzare, che rende possibile filtrare quelli a contenuto forte o adulto. Allo stato attuale la funzione produce effetti solo per quelli avatar gestiti dal servizio Gravatar. Gli sviluppatori promettono che man mano che migliorerà l'integrazione di questo servizio con quello fornito da WordPress.com questa funzione verrà estesa agli avatar da questo gestiti;
• Si può scegliere un avatar di default oltre a quelli denominati "blank" oppure "the mystery man";

Come chicca finale ci piace dare enfasi al nuovo servizio chiamato Identicons. Queste identicons altro non sono che avatar generati matematicamente a partire dallo specifico indirizzo e-mail del commentatore e sono quindi unici per ciascun indirizzo e-mail. Questo per evitare che il commentatore si iscriva a servizi quali Gravatar o altro e che, semplicemente usando sempre e solo un unico indirizzo e-mail, vedrà associarsi una icona personale e non più riproducibile da un altro commentatore.

Le identicons sono una idea partorita da Don Park e potrete saperne di più leggendo la specifica pagina su wikipedia qui linkata.

Here's what you can do:

• Turn avatars on and off, which applies to their display on your blog.
• Choose a rating, which right now only works for Gravatars but as we integrate WordPress.com and Gravatar avatars better will apply to both.
• Choose a default other than blank or the mystery man.
• Laugh manically as you contemplate your new-found power.

I would highly recommend trying out Identicons, which are a cool math-based image idea created by Don Park that's unique to the commenter, so even if someone doesn't have an avatar yet they have a consistent (and handsome) image next to their name when they comment.

We're probably going to make Identicons the default for the dashboard instead of the mystery man, we just need to make a few tweaks to Gravatar infrastructure first. (The generated avatars are CPU-intensive to create, and it's Sunday, a day of rest for the busy Gravatar servers.)

Also, don't Identicons sound like something from Transformers?

There are three non-WordPress projects: Akismet, bbPress, and Gravatar. (Actually, to describe them as "non-WordPress" is to simplify since, as we will see, each has firm connections to WordPress.) I find the first of these the most interesting, and I know I'm not alone in that. Askismet is an ambitious project.

Automattic Kismet (Akismet for short) is a collaborative effort to make comment and trackback spam a non-issue and restore innocence to blogging, so you never have to worry about spam again.

Although Akismet is an Automattic project and is WordPress.com's spam cop, it is not only for WordPress blogs. The Akismet API is published so that the server can be invoked from other applications.

The Akismet server is unusual among Automattic projects in that it is closed source. This seems to be the norm for spam-fighting server code: it is also true of Akismet's rivals Defensio and Mollom.

Automattic, as a privately-held firm, is under no obligation to provide details of how much money it makes from specific projects. But Duncan Riley at TechCrunch described Akismet as Automattic’s biggest money earner. Toni, Automattic's CEO, was quick to counter what he described as "misconceptions," stating that Akismet is not even close to being Automattic's biggest earner.

Direct earnings from Akismet come from commercial licenses. Indirect earnings arise from the extent to which Akismet helps convince bloggers to choose WordPress.com.

Moving on to the other other projects, bbPress is forum software. It runs the various WordPress forums. To put it another way, bbPress is the name under which Automattic released the software on which the WordPress.org support forums have been running for years. Automattic intends to offer hosted forums under the name TalkPress (rather as it offers hosted blogging at WordPress.com).

Gravatar is notable among Automattic projects for having been acquired; I believe it to be Automattic's only acquisition so far. At the time of the acquisition, Om Malik described Gravatar as a small project that gives Wordpress users the ability to add avatars to their profiles. It is clear from the Gravatar about page that there are far loftier ambitions for the project. Today, an avatar. Tomorrow, Your Identity—Online.
