Venho desta forma apresentar, formalmente e a quem ainda não conhece, o Espaço Medeia. Encontrei-o no outro dia, por acaso, quando fui ao Monumental Saldanha, e não sei bem quando abriu e se já foi à muito tempo. De qualquer forma, pareceu-me recente.

E foi ao entrar pela porta que tive uma epifania (dessas que incluem spot light divino e tudo): posters. Posters de cinema. Posters de filmes cujos posters rasgados e com fita-cola eu andei a implorar nos cinemas. Ali, a 5€. De filmes chineses, de filmes russos, de filmes bons (vá, e mais ou menos). E depois, filmes. Filmes originais, ante-estreias, inéditos, promoções, colecções...

Apesar de não ter visto (mas a luz da minha epifania deixou-me um bocado atordoada), no site indica que também se pode consultar revistas e livros de cinema, aceder à Internet gratuitamente (na primeira meia hora, depois 50c), beber café com vista para a cidade e respirar fundo o mundo do cinéfilos.

É no último andar do Medeia Monumental Saldanha, e está aberto das 18h às 22h30 de segunda a sexta, e das 14h30 às 22h30 aos sábados, domingos e feriados.

Maybe I should take this chance to brush up my Chinese.

The cure? Cosmic Go! Takemiya Masaki pioneered a style of play where you spend the opening moves making a gigantic architecture - virtually insisting that your opponent come inside and invade it. Once the opponent takes you up on the offer, however, it's important that you've set the moyo up such that you can either kill the invasion (if it's an overplay) or take profit from it by putting pressure on the invading stones.

In playing today I tried to keep that in mind. I took white, and responded to the two (3,4) stones my opponent played by forcing a parallel fuseki, and playing a (3,4) and a (4,4) corner opening. Black's next three moves were to approach my 3,4 stone with a keima as well as take two corner-enclosures. I spent these moves playing the chinese and mini-chinese fuseki, as well as pincering the approaching stone. Several moves later I'd made a running group in the lower-right of the board (but not the corner, as that was already sealed off) and by threateneing to cut his stones and connect to my own, I was able to give it life. This was after i'd sealed off his bottom left corner and top right. At that point my moyo resembled a huge circle around the middle of the board - and the hoshi points along the top and left sides. He invaded at the 3,3 point, and even managed to probe deeply with a dragon. However at the end of it I managed to keep about 3/4 of the originally marked center territory. In the end I won by about 26.5 points or so.

Moral of the story? Don't leave a moyo alone long enough for it to become too strong, and set things up so that the influence from an invasion is worth more than the points from no invasion. Oh - and connect weak groups by exploiting low aji in formations.

There aren't a huge amount of changes in the new version, and cosmetically there's been little more than a polish. The strong black shadows of V7 have been toned down and a few icons are replaced but that's about it.

That needs updating, it doesn't even show the 520/720/920 as being compatible. Not much in the way of new features, and it doesn't even mention the one addition I have found. On Preferences screen 3 there's a new icon for show lane images.

Pressing this gets a message that the map I am using is not compatible with lane guidance. So what map is?

I searched Tomtom.com trying to find information on what maps are compatible with this feature, and found no direct information. I guessed V8 maps would be required so had a look at map updates for the latest Go 730, which shows version 8.05 maps in the store. The latest maps available to buy for the Go 720 are version 7.20. Does this mean I have a feature on my GPS that I can't use? This brings me to my biggest complaint.

When you buy a Tomtom GPS unit you get a 30 day Latest Map Guarantee. This means if the maps are updated within 30 days of registering the unit, you get a free update. If you're out of these 30 days, you have to pay. To update my version 715 maps to version 720 will cost me £50. Why do Tomtom not give one year of free updates with the unit? This seems like just another method of extracting as much cash as possible from customers.

The Go 720 came with a code to enter for the Latest Map Guarantee and a free safety camera update. When I entered the code into Tomtom home the software said it wasn't eligible, so I never got the updates. Maybe Tomtom need to start concentrating on giving their customers a good service rather than milking it for all it's worth.

That's the rant over, below are the screenshots I took of the version 8.010 software for those thinking of buying a discounted Go 720 or the new Go 730. The black border has been added to make the screenshots clearer.

People haven’t forgotten their winless performance last year, and have used this to dismiss this squad as this generation’s version of last generation’s NU. However, the UAAP has a way of turning the tables on unsuspecting individuals.

Daje nam to pełne dwa tygodnie (i jeszcze dwa dni), na które zaproszeni czuć się mogą nie tylko mistrzowie, ale również początkujący goiści.

Wszelkie informacje dostępne są na oficjalnej stronie Kongresu. Ze swojej strony dodam, że warto zajrzeć do planu zajęć który obfituje w różne turnieje (Główny, rengo, blitz i kilka innych). Na imprezie pojawią się profesjonaliści z Japonii, Korei, Taiwanu i Rosji.

Ciężko napisać coś konstruktywnego jednocześnie nie powtarzając za oficjalną stroną imprezy. Znajdziecie tam, wszystko czego potrzeba, włącznie z informacją jak wypożyczać rowery...

Miejmy nadzieję, że choć część naszych rodaków skusi się na wspaniałą wycieczkę do malowniczego szwedzkiego miasteczka. Niewątpliwie jest to wielka atrakcja dla wszelkiej maści goistów.

Je crois avoir écrit quelque part et dit très souvent (pour ceux qui me côtoient trop souvent, je m'en excuse) que je suis un fanatique récent certes mais fanatique tous de même du jeu de Go. Le mot go signifie jeu de l'encerclement mais il porte d'autre nom dont Shudan ce qui littéralement signifie 'Conversation des mains'. Les règles du go sont très simples, même les enfants peuvent apprendre (si ça vous intéresse je vous recommande ce site très bien fait http://jeudego.org/index.php). En revanche la simplicité des règles n'empêche pas la complexité du jeu. Je me suis laissé prendre au piège de ce jeu en lisant un manga sur le sujet. La multitude de coup possible et les réflexions que cela suscite chez les joueurs en font un jeu très intéressant (à mon avis plus que les échecs mais c'est personnel). J'aurais beaucoup de mal à vous rendre la tension qui née dans une partie entre les deux joueurs, l'affrontement que l'on ressent à chaque pierre posée , la joie , la tristesse, la frustration parfois que l'on éprouve.

Si certains veulent jouer contre des joueurs de tous niveaux et qu'il ne savent pas comment trouver des partenaires je leurs recommande enfin ce site http://www.gokgs.com/index.xhtml?locale=fr_FR.

Sinon, je suppose qu'en lecteurs avertis de la presse que vous êtes tous (ou presque), vous avez entendu parler de ces deux jeunes gens poignardés à la Londres dans leur appartement. Figurez-vous que ça tombe bien parce que justement, je part à Londres dans un mois. Je ne pense pas me faire larder de coup de couteau bien sur, je ne suis pas aussi parano que ça, mais bon...

Hoy se publica la noticia de la adquisición de Powerset por parte de Microsoft, y la noticia tiene vuelo tras la novela de Yahoo!

Powerset ofrece la tecnología de búsqueda contextual, este término con el que muchos vienen experimentando, más aún por el consabido dominio de Google.

En el mundo actual hay tanta gente que quiere aparecer bien posicionada en Google (vía SEO y SEM) como tantos otros que quieren evitarlo, engañarlo y en lo posible, no estar.

Powerset ha encontrado un buen nicho en la búsqueda concentrada en la Wikipedia.

La idea de MSFT sería introducir el algoritmo de Powerset en su buscador de Windows Live. Las crónicas periodísticas dicen que con esto busca encontrar un espacio más destacado en el reino de Google y virreinato de Yahoo!, pero me parece una interpretación todavía apresurada.

Drei neue Students, eine neue Lehrerin und ich darf mich nun offiziell erster Kyu nennen.

Viktor, ein Freund von mir aus Oesterreich, ist seit circa einer Woche hier. Er ist 4dan und spielt mit einem sehr gutem Stil. In der letzten Ice-cream neki (neki, korean. fuer Wette; ein kleines, kurzes IBA internes Go Turnier um Eis) hat er gezeigt, dass er im Moment der staerkste Student in der Akademie ist. Ja, wir spielen um Ice-cream! Haha :) .

Matt, mein ehemaliger Zimmergenosse, hat uns leider verlassen und ist nun in Japan. Doch seit 1. Juli bin ich wieder zu zweit im Zimmer. Die Stube teile ich jetzt mit Jonathan, 2kyu Frankreich.

Last but not least, Chiyong ist nun auch mit im IBA Boot. Sie ist Yonguseng (Def. siehe im vorherigen Post) und wird nun mit uns studieren um Profispielerin zu werden.

Seit ein oder zwei Wochen haben wir in der IBA eine neue Lehrerin: Lee So-Yong 7dan. Auch eine ehemalige Yonguseng und sie hat es bis in die erste Klasse geschafft (Info: die erste Klasse ist die hoechste). Sie ist zwanzig Jahre alt und studiert im Moment an der Myongji Universitaet.
Dienstag und Donnerstag kommt sie zur IBA und unterrichtet uns.

Wenn ich solche Lehrerinnen in meiner Schulzeit gehabt haette, haette ich mich mehr angestrengt. ;) Nach vielen Partien gegen die Mitglieder der IBA war So-Yong lange ungeschlagen. Ich moechte nicht angeben, aber heute war ich der erste, der ihre Siegesreihe unterbrechen konnte.

Achja fast vergessen, ich habe die Juni Liga gewonnen! Dies und Lee So Yong's Lob ueber meine Partie hatten zur Folge, dass ich mich nun erster Kyu schimpfen darf. Hell yeah! Ich freu mich auf die groesseren Herausforderungen.

So, many things happened.

Three new students, a new teacher and I am officially allowed to call myself "First Kyu".

Since about a  week Viktor, a Austrian friend of mine, is here in the IBA. He is 4dan and has a very calm and good style. In the last ice-cream neki (neki = bet, a small tournament for ice-cream) Viktor proved that he is probably the best player in the academy. Yes, we gamble with ice-cream. Haha :).

Matt, my former roommate, left the IBA and is now in Japan. However since the first of July I share my room with Jonathan, a French 2kyu.

Last, but not least, Chiyong is a new IBA member. She is a yonguseng (For the definition, look in the post below). Chiyong is studying with us to become a professional go player.

Since a couple of weeks, there is a new teacher in the IBA: Lee So-yong 7dan. She is a former yonguseng and made it to the first class (the highest). So-yong is 20 years old and currently a student of the Myongji university.

She teaches us every Tuesday and Thursday.

If I had teachers like this in my former school, I would have been a better student. :D After numerous games against the other members of the IBA, So-yong was still undefeated. I don't want to brag, I was the first who could beat her, and so her winning streak ended.

Ah, I almost forgot, I won the June League! Because of this success and So-Yong's praise for my game, I am now officially "First Kyu". Hell yeah, I am eager for new challenges! Bring it on!

There are a lot of new creations on the interwebs some good, some not so good.  The ones that people decide to use often often require leaving the page you are on, or some fancy pants new widget thing that causes your browser to crash.  All of these creations have a specific purpose, and a specific behaviour, and with a simple text entry (command) box, I believe that a very powerful, and relatively simple access point can be made for all that is out there.  The behaviour of the commands can be determined by the nature of the web application that one calls upon.

Picture, a simple browser plugin that consists of a single text entry box and a button (i have ideas for other buttons... will cover in future posts) that simply says go.  I think the best way to demonstrate the potential this has will be to provide some possible examples...

This example would ideally post a tweet including the url of the current page - there is the possibility of including an *incl:tinyurl depending on legalities (I am not very well versed in law).  This command would not open a new tab, chances are twitter would be open in another tab anyway. It essentially saves a user from clicking on that tab, clicking in the text entry box, typing the message, clicking the post button, then clicking back to the page they were reading - and this is assuming that they have the tab open.

This kind of action could be repeated depending on the users' preference... /@facebook @status "this site sucks *incl:URL"

/@google ""allans ideas""

This example would search google for the phrase "Allan's ideas" the behavior of the "'s im not too sure about as I am not well versed in programming either.  This action would open a new tab (it would have to).  It could be repeated across any search... /@technorati, /@yahoo /@amazon...etc.  The interesting thing about this one is that any search engine specific commands (site:blah.com, intitle:blah) if contained within the initial set of "" could be carried out easily

/@freeSMS 123456789 "hey, I really think you might like this site *incl:URL"

If someone wrote an application for the command bar which could send free sms messages then it could take advantage of the command bar.  The reasoning behind naming it freeSMS instead of simply SMS, is because generic terms like @search, @bookmark...etc would be unfair, although if revenue was a part of this model then i would imagine quite a bidding war for these terms - luckily it ain't.  I am all about fairness, and I believe that there are enough recognizable and different names out there with unique names which self select their audience that it shouldn't be an issue, reddit, digg and the rest for example.

/@blog @post "*incl:<title>This is a very interesting site *incl:URL It has wide reaching...blah" *incl:Tags -edit

This example involves a user setting which is for people who want to use a login to customise certain commands - actually this may solve the common terms (/@search) issue, - Where the user sets the platform that they choose to blog on, then posts either the start of a post or the entire post.  The *inlc:<title> could utilize regex to grab the title, I will get to *incl:tags in a later post (I have big ideas for this too, so hassle me and I will chuck them up) and the - edit can direct the user to the beginnings of a blog edit page or could be interchanged with things like -preview.  Delving way down the line - if someone typed /@blog the text box could expand to display the blog edit functions (could these be standardized? they are pretty much all bang image in here, bang URL in here anyway aren't they?).

some more /@bookmark *incl:Tags + research project 1, /@review, or /@amazon @review...etc, any more would be cool to hear.

Do you kinda get where I am going with this, and the potential it has? or am I completely bonkers, with no grasp of the real situation.  I will argue that commands (like wiki, search) are already pretty widely used, and this system can offer the geekier user a very powerful tool, but still be usable by a large number of people, and I will argue in general.
