Karate Girl had to babysit so the Kenpo Kid and I went out - well lets be fair, Karate Girl and I searched for Off Your Rocker this morning but she couldn't find it. Later, the Kenpo Kid and I went to look for it and HE couldn't find it - enter the MOM. Yes, that's right, never send a ninja to do a mom's work. I found it! Our first find was Dam It #3 - the Kenpo Kid scored that one, and our last find of the day was 2EZ. I do love my new GPS though :) We had a couple of dnf's too, but who wants to think about those on such a beautiful day. The only drawback to the day is because of all the rain we've had recently, the mosquitos are out in FULL force. Forget bugspray, you need a freaking flame thrower to get rid of them.

One of the many changes I am trying to make in the family is having more one on one time with each of my kids. I have found that although we do things together as a family I miss opportunities to have conversation with my kids when the other two are not around. I am finding that when I have more time to talk with them alone I get to see more of their personality and needs. Emma and I went to Zesto's and got some ice cream. I let her get a ridiculous brownie sundae that I wouldn't let her get if her siblings where with us (for cost reasons!) and we talked about Jesus and the difficulties of having pretty much the whole extended family not be believers in Christ. We then snuggled up on the couch and I let her watch a grown up movie with me. Emma is 9 going to 20 so she thinks the rules about movies we have are for the 'little kids' not her. We watched the first installment of 'Pirates of the Caribbean' which we both enjoyed. Of course the part where the ghost crew is working on deck in the moonlight kinda made her yelp and hide under my arm but she really liked the movie. I haven't done anything yet with Jenna but I am guessing it will be require glitter and ponies. With my girls our times are daddy-daughter dates but with Connor we are having BOY TIME which means adventure and outdoors and gadgets.

So we went geocaching this week. We have been geocaching for a couple of years now and really enjoy it. Every time we go we discover new places. Connor and I discovered a nature center hidden away not ten miles from our house with a boat launch to the river, bike trails and a trail you can drive around the whole property.

This trail had mud and the ever present danger of getting stuck meaning I had to floor it quite often and choose a good line. So on our adventures we skipped rocks, found deer bones and a geocache that was surprisingly difficult since it was in a dried out steep creek bed and I still had my boot on from my surgery. Good times. We are all going as a family today caching. My next thing with Connor will probably making a survival kit with an altoid tin.

!!!

Feel free to post some ideas you have about doing low cost special stuff to do with family.

While it wasn't my first choice for campsites, it really was a good trip.

We ended up leaving on Monday afternoon about 3:30pm. That was a lot later than I had originally planned, but I could get myself moving on Saturday to get the trailer packed and ready. So, we did most of the packing on Monday.

After we got to camp, we decided to do tinfoil dinners first, because the dutch oven meals were still frozen. It was nice. We then settle in earlier than usual for camping, because we had worked hard that morning.

In the morning, I woke up before everyone else (which is typical). So, I decided that I would start the day in searching for a geocache. The is called New Name New Cache and it is located up the Days Fork Trail. It is accessible only through the Spruces campground, but you can park just outside the campground if you don't want to pay the fee.

It was a rough hike at first, but it levels off near the end and is very pleasant. I was tempted to place another cache to attract people up there, but I really didn't have a good container. So, I will put one up next year. Spruces seems to be an annual tradition in our family.

When I got home we had a big breakfast of biscuits, sausages, and eggs. The biscuits were done in the dutch oven, and as you would expect from the dutch oven, there were better than from a regular oven.

After breakfast, I got the geocaching but again. So, I offered to take my kids on a hike to find a geocache. We headed out in search of Health Come to Dog Lake. When I got to the trail head and saw that the trail was 2.6 miles, I should have known it was too much for my 4- and 2-year-old to handle, but when I am caching such common sense departs.

After getting about 1.5 miles into the hike, I contemplated turning around. It was a beautiful enough of a spot to call our final destination. There were hundreds of butterflies, a few bees, and thousands of beautiful flowers by the stream. It made a great resting place.

However, after eating the snacks that we had brought, I was renewed. So, we pushed on. I told my children that we would decide about turning back once we got the the fork in the trail. At the fork, it was only a half a mile left to Dog Lake, so we decided to do it. It was a lot rougher, but no more difficult than the first half of the trail. It was at this point I started to carry Capt. Z.

We finally made it to Dog Lake. It wasn't much to see, but it was a good hike. We thought about pushing on the the cache. But realized that it was 2:30pm and that Mom would be expecting us home soon. So, we gave up on that cache, and decided to find the two that I had already found before. We found the first, but not the last.

We ended up not getting home until 5:30pm. So late, that my wife had called my dad, and was ready to send out the search teams. But my dad assured her, that I was just following in his foot steps and turning a short hike into a forever hike.

Sandy had dinner all ready to go by the time we got home, so I helped her get dessert ready. We had the Great Chicken Dinner that I have told you about again. But we finished it off with some very delicious Orange Knot Rolls. I will share the recipe with you tomorrow. After a long hike, it was very delicious and satisfying. I don't remember ever eating that well while camping.

We started a game of cards that evening, but the younger kids were acting up, and we decided that we should call it a night.

Wednesday morning, I decided to stick around for two reasons. The first was because we were having German Pancakes in the dutch oven. The second was that I was tired from the 8 miles of hiking that I did the day before.

After breakfast, the kids relaxed and played in the nearby stream, and I didn't do much. I did take a short nap, and played a little catch with the kids, but for the most part, I watched the trees grow.

After lunch, which was hot dogs and mac'n'cheese, we play a game of 'May I' (that's pronounced like the request "may eye?"). One of these days I hope to explain it to you, because I believe that it is a Gazelem Family phenomenon.

Then for dinner we had barbecue country style pork ribs (if you need the recipe then you have never dutch oven cooked) and baked potatoes. The potatoes were done by wrapping them in tinfoil and then cooking them in the dutch oven. They were amazingly good.

I couldn't let the day go by without some geocaching, so we decided to do some drive-by caches in the canyon. We started out with a no find, then we had a couple of easy finds by a restaurant and a trail head.

The cache by the trail head gave me an idea of where I wanted to go in the morning. So after an okay night's rest, I started by going after perhaps the lamest virtual cache in Utah, and perhaps the reason GC.com doesn't list virtual caches. Then, I headed back to the trail head, and head up the canyon to grab several different caches.

But the main goal to to get a possible First To Find. I knew from the description, and looking at my TOPO maps on my GPS that this wasn't going to be a pretty hike. But I had to go for it. Because my database was a month old and it looked like a possible First Find experience. The hike up was rough. There was a couple of times that I thought about giving up. But I perservered, and I was the second to find the cache.

My only regret is that my camera batteries were dead and so there were no pictures taken of this beautiful site. I might just have to do this again for the great pictures. But I think that I saw an easier approach while I was up there, so I might try a different route next time.

Coming down was an adventure itself. I decided to follow in the steps of the person before me (not that I saw his tracks, just had the same mind set). And I headed straight down the hill. There were several times that I felt like I was going to fall and break something, but after slowing down just a hair, and keeping my eyes wide open, I managed to get to Willow Heights safely.

When I got home, we started packing up the trailer and started heading home. It was a fun week, and I am glad that despite my misgivings, that we went camping at Spruces. Next year, I will definitely place a couple of caches in the area. Because I know that I will be going often enough.

I received an email late last night from the geocache.com volunteer reviewer stating that my cache was located within a state park and that I would need a permit before it could be posted. I followed the provided link and discovered the permit process involves meeting with the park manager and proving that the cache met a rather large list of requirements. While I wouldn't argue against some kind of permit process I do think it is beyond reasonable to expect an in person arranged meeting for this type of permit. A simple on line form with coordinates, description, and even pictures could suffice for this need. The Washington state parks department has put in place an unreasonable process to oversee a simple and beneficial sport.

Next weekend I will remove the cache from Deception pass state park and move it to non park lands. I highly doubt that I will ever place a cache on Washington state park lands unless a more reasonable and modern means of applying for a permit is put in place.

Once the cache has been moved I will update the location on here.

I decided to look for a couple of caches while the two ninjas were in class - went to one...too many muggles - off to the next one. The GPS was cooperating, I hiked up the hill of the old abandoned ski area found the approximate area just barely into the woods and started searching. I looked down to check the roots of a tree and then I saw my legs - COVERED in mosquitos - I mean literally covered - it was like that off commercial when I was a kid, the guy stuck his arm in the glass box full of mosquitos. Anyhow since I was sans bugspray and it's West Nile time, I decided to hightail it the heck out of those woods and fast. Amazingly, I only got a couple of bites, but I felt like the little buggers were all over me for the rest of the night.

Karate Girl and I did some caching today while Kenpo Kid was over a friend's house. Unfortunately, thunder, lightning and rain called an early end to our day.

Found:

Scobie Pond boat launch GCZGXM - did this one today while the Kenpo Kid was teaching class.

Hole in One - GC19PT1 - N 42° 59.567 W 071° 28.504 - GOOD cache - parking was a challenge. Good lunch place down the street that I highly recommend - Rita Mae's - very yummy. my GPS was way off on this one, but after THINKING about it for a few minutes, we knew right where to look

Canine Collaboration - GC17QVX - N 42° 57.753 W 071° 26.704 - this one was a challenge - the GPS was NOT happy here. But it was funny - we looked and looked and couldn't find it...got in the car to leave - I moved to a quieter area to punch in our next coordinates and BAM, there it was.

Pass the time while they shop? Mall of NH - GC10B5P - N 42° 57.465 W 071° 25.775 - our first find of the day....the lure of the mall was almost too much for the teenaged Karate Girl, but she was strong and managed to fight the urges lol.

Didn't Find:

Harvey School - GC17X8Q - the employees of the nearby business were all hanging about outside - we'll be back when said business is closed.

Remember the Arch - GC10E4C - we were in the EXACT location - it's right down the street from my where I work, but we just couldn't find it - maybe next time.

SportyPet - GC16P1V - grrrr - frustration - we were here, twice - but the same stupid tractor trailer was parked there in the same place. I know the guy was probably resting and good for him, but NOT in the way of my geocaching please

After planning a trip down to Porterville this weekend some last minute dental work caused a small change in plans. We decided to stay around Fresno and pick up some local caches. We ended up with 30 for the day. Favorite finds were the continuation of the Rubber Road series placed by Bush and Boots. We started at Dr Doom's Letterbox Hybrid cache, our first DNF was BandB's Farmersville cache, and we topped it all off with another of TFM's Bad Nanos. We were all over the place, as far south as the Pepsi Warehouse on North Avenue and all the way up to Old Friant Road. Downtown Fresno and Clovis, exciting!! It's always fund to cache at home.

I haven't written about Geocaching as Outdoor Adventure Recreation, but it is! The official definition of Geocaching is:

"Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for gps users. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the wonderful features and capability of a GPS unit. The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the Internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache."

I am a Charter Member of geocaching.com, and have been since February 16, 2001. At that time, Geocaching was only about 6 months old, and not widely known. I happened upon the website while doing research about the new GPS receiver that Tracie had given me for Christmas. I was hooked......

I will definitely blog more about my family's geocaching adventures as time goes by. I have been lucky enough to introduce dozens of people (kids especially enjoy hunting for "treasure") to it over the years, and it is something that you now can do almost anywhere in the world.

There are now over 617,000 caches waiting to be found worldwide, so get out your GPSr and log on and go have a self-guided outdoor adventure!

Today was a good although tiring day as much of it was spent walking on sand and rock at Deception Pass. The day started at Rosario beach in Deception Pass State Park with the intention of hiding a cache and checking out the tide pools. The trail was great and had some great views of the bay below. I hid a cache, this makes number two, on the trail and placed a geocoin previously acquired in the cache. The geocoin was a seahorse so I felt this location was perfect for such a coin considering the proximity of the water. Once I get a cache number I will post it on here.

Next I descended to the tide pools in hopes of seeing a wealth of marine life. Once I arrived at the tide pools I was informed that the area was restricted to a specific path and that little life was left there. The reason for the lack of life was that 13 years earlier 1200 students came to this location and caused a great deal of damage. They are working to hopefully restore the area and I hope that in time the tide pools return to their previous state.

The next stop was by the deception pass bridges and a hike down to the beach. I was in search of a cache that was listed as having geocoins in it. The walk was over a mile and a half on the beach. I found that the loose sand and deep rock was quite draining and cut my endurance down. I found the cache though I was disappointed to find that the geocoins were gone and not logged. This did not surprise me as I have found the caches in this area seem to have been robbed of their trackables. Despite the lack of a geocoin and the energy zapping sand and rock I really enjoyed the views and am glad I chose to find the cache.

Today we spent the day like tourists traveling out of Baku to Gobustan to see the petroglyphs and mud volcanoes and do a little geocaching.

We were on a tour that was arranged by the Embassy. The group was larger than I thought it would be. There were 18 adults and a handful of children. I was so excited to get started on the trip. I borrowed a GPS unit (eTrexLegend) from our neighbor because ours hasn't arrived yet. I programmed it with the location of the cache and watched the miles count down as we left the city of Baku and headed toward Gobustan.

We went to the petroglyphs first. The petroglyphs are ancient carvings that were discovered in Baku around 1940. They date back to the time somewhere around the 12th-8th century. Around 6000 carvings have been found.

Before we were able to start our tour we were drawn in to the wedding celebration that was oddly enough taking place here in the dirt! The bride didn't look to happy about us crashing her celebration (maybe it was because her white dress was becoming begie), but the family/guests sure didn't seem to care. It was interesting to watch. They danced in a big circle around the bride, clapping and singing. I don't know if the groom was present or not, if so he wasn't easily identifiable (no tuxedo).

Most of the petroglyphs that we saw were of animals, people and boats. There probably wasn't much else going on back then to report on. There was a gathering scene which was interesting because it was very near the musical stone (you hit it with a river stone and it makes musical tones) which makes sense that people would gather in this area to dance in celebration of whatever needed celebrating such as a successful hunt.

Other scenes were of pregnant women, animals and boats

The scenery was really beautiful.

I can't post all of the pictures here, but I will upload them to a web album (that will take me a few days) for you all to view if you want to.

Out of no where came a rain shower and while I thought it was refreshing, not everyone felt the same and we headed back to the vehicles and made our way to the mud volcanoes.

Now my MAIN reason for wanting to go on this trip was to search for the geocache that is hidden at the mud volcanoes. I wasn't sure if being on a tour would be the best time to do this because of time, amount of people, etc. Thankfully we were in a private vehicle so we didn't have to leave with the rest of the group.

The mud volcanoes were interesting. I assume there is some sort of gas that is pushing this mud up and making it bubble and erupt. Note the gas gave a small popping sound when one of the guys put his lighter to it (maybe methane?)

Here is evidence of a recent eruption

and couple of mud volcano pictures.

Ok so, after I took these pictures it was time to do some geocaching. I started the Tales from the Trails blog so that Scott could give his buddies a blog address and they wouldn't have to sift through all of my banter and knitting related news to find what they were looking for. I will make a link from my post on this blog to that blog when I post there.

On the way home we stopped to take pictures of the oil literally oozing out of the ground here. CRAZY!

So that's it for this first adventure. I'm sure there will be many more to come. One thing we did decide today is that we probably won't be auditioning for the Amazing Race anytime soon! : )

Our first geocache attempt (Mud Volcano Cache #GC16BJJ in Azerbaijan) was a bust or in geocaching terms a DNF (did not find). But we had a good day, saw some beautiful sights and found what we think would be a great location for a cache near the entrance to the petroglyphs. Hopefully our cache containers and goodies will arrive around the same time as the GPS and that way we'll be able to place a cache AND finda cahce on our next trip to Gobustan. Stay tuned.

Also, hier mal wieder ein kleiner Post.^^

Mittwoch:

BB.

We're hooked, and feel the urge to run out up a mountain side at a moments notice just on the hopes that we might be the first to find that particular cache. It's a very healthy addiction though - we get a lot of exercise and we get to see a lot of neat places we wouldn't have found on our own as tourists! We're proficient at reading maps and using gps navigation and it's just great fun! When we don't have the time to go out ourselves, we get updates on other's caching-adventures. Once in while cachers host events and get together and that's great!

So if you have a sense of adventure and like the outdoors, click the picture and read more about geocaching.

To put it short - geocaching is the best thing since sliced bread, isn't that how that saying goes.. ;-)

This has been a busy and challenging week at work. Some would consider that a bad thing though I find such days to be rewarding. If I was to sit at a desk and do little productive work I think I would have a mental breakdown. As it stands now I am presented with a new challenge each day and I get to work with a variety of people in various departments.

I have had a chest cold since late last week and it appears that I am all but over it so I am looking forward to enjoying some outdoor fun this weekend. After cutting my knee last week the Anacortes trip was ended a little earlier than planned. This weekend I plan on heading back up that way and doing two hikes. One of the hikes is at the deception pass state park and includes some tide pools, hopefully I can hit those at low tide. The second hike is closer to Anacortes proper and includes some beaver ponds. I plan on taking plenty of pictures on each of the hikes and of course I plan on doing some geocaching while in the area.

I am hoping to hide my second cache in the area of the tide pools. I picked up a seahorse geocoin at a cache recently and I thought this would go great considering the tide pools fit the theme of the coin. My first cache has yet to be found and three individuals left comments saying their attempts at finding it were not successful. Within the next couple weeks I plan on heading back up to lake twenty two in order to confirm the coordinates are good. I did use the averaging function to try and get a good fix on the location.

My next post will likely be Saturday or Sunday following my hiking and caching unless of course something noteworthy happens prior to that.
