Designing a logo is no simple task. Unless you are working with Indigo Design, that is. Company Founder, Audria Gardner lives for the challenge: "I love designing. It's a wonderful challenge. Every project has a different set of criteria. I love the process of taking a customers idea, starting out with an idea and stretching it, rearranging it, coaxing it until it becomes something the customer sees and says, ‘yes, that’s exactly what I had in mind.’"

Testimonial:

I started utilizing Audria's services at Indigo Design eight years ago when I was in the process of starting up Body Kneads. The logo she created has been an extraordinary asset allowing us to successfully "brand" our business. Audria also created all the designs we have used on an ongoing basis for our advertising and marketing pieces. She has always been creative, resourceful and responsive making her a critical member of our team. Body Kneads has grown to include 22 massage therapists, 2 chiropractors and 6 administrative staff. We would not have enjoyed our success with out thehelp of Indigo Design.

That's a lie! I woke up early yesterday (since it's not 12-something) to go play intramural volleyball only to find out that my group isn't playing until today! And I'm just getting a chance to take a break from everything. I took an hour and a half long nap in between some stuff earlier, but that was it. I've been up and going since 7:30 yesterday morning and now I get to go to bed... After I'm done with this blog post anyway, haha.

Candlelight Devo was amazing! I took some cool pics with my phone and if I can figure out how, I'll post them in a blog sometime soon. I talked to Jake twice today and that was nice. I love getting to see my internes again, that's the coolest thing about ACU right now. He's beginning to think I have stlaker radar or something. Hopefully I'll be able to get more creeper points than him soon... I definitely creeped out his roommate, so I'm gettin' there, haha.

Other than that we didn't do a whole lot that was exciting. But I did find out that I got more financial aid so I now should have around $24,000-something in loans/scholarships/grants. So that's exciting, I only have to pay like $2 - 3,000 for this first year. Hopefully I can keep up with my grades and keep that financial aid. Also, keep praying that I get that Student Recruiting position I applied and interviewed for, I find out on Friday if I got it.

Well, I gotta wake up at 5:30 in the morning to be ready to leave by 6:15 for the Sunrise Devo. Thanks for all the prayers and I really miss everyone back home. College is so different! Well, toodles!

-Bee-

(PS) I'll be attending Highland CoC with a girl from my U100 class. I'm pretty excited about it, which is ironic because I really did NOT wanna go to Highland just because everyone from my Youth Group that goes to ACU ends up going to Highland, but I think that might be a reason I've gravitated toward that church as well.

15 runs. All I have to say is: took you long enough. I get it though, you wanted to be fashionably late right? The Yanks are now 5 back in the WC... how two wins can change everything. 5 looks a hell of a lot more manageable. Please let this be the turnaround.

- The future legendary God named A-Rod is still driving them over the fence... this time when the Yanks need the long shot.

- The speed threat named Brett is determined to remain with the team this time, racking up two more hits today, no sweat.

- Hughes will be pitching in Scranton in about 20ish minutes from now. If all goes well, his next start will likely be with the team.

While browsing my blog states today, I noticed someone searching out why 13 and 21 were significant

While browsing my blog states today, I noticed someone searching out why 13 and 21 were significant to witches. This is a primarily Wiccan post, as our numerology is different than other schema and identities.

I am going to quote Gerald B. Gardner in his brief, confuddled explanation in Witchcraft Today, below:

Because three and five make eight, many things must be in eights; but eight and five make thirteen, and so thirteen is another good number; but since five eights, or three covens and a leader, make forty, forty is a good number and certain things must be forty.

Does anyone else feel like they were robbed of intelligence with that reasoning? Either way, that is the traditional perspective. The numbers in Gardnerian Wicca which are special are 3, 5, 8, 13 and 40.

Spiritually, the numbers can easily be assigned deeper meanings.

3 - The God, the Goddess, and Life/Child/Creation/etc. The goddess in her triple form.

5 - Man. The Pentacle. The God.

8 - The Wheel of the Year - the 8 solar sabbats.(4 "height of (insert season here)", 2 equinoxes, 2 solstices)

13 - The Wheel of the Year - the 13 lunar esbats.(full moons)

40 - I'm at a loss here. I do like his explanation. Three covens and a leader.

Keep in mind that within Gardnerian tradition, these numbers become exceptionally important in the initiation rites - the purification/test act of scourging is assigned to these various numbers. I believe I mentioned the scourge in an earlier post.

I'm sure I'll come back to the intricacies of Gardnerian Initiation Rites at some point...but as I have not slept in some time, that's a rather large chunk of information for me to process at this moment.

Blessed Be!

Twitter is a site where a person can post a message to a bunch of friends at once. Sometimes Twitter works like a bulletin board (where you pin up your notice and get no replies) and sometimes it works like an on-line chatroom with a ton of conversations going on at once.

Last night I replied to a post from my friend Laura. She questioned how it would be possible for someone named Angelina to have a high IQ score (around 136 I think). Assuming Laura was referring to Angelina Jolie, I responded that a 136 score, albeit high, isn’t uncommon and Ms. Jolie seems capable of such a score.

A firestorm erupted, and this time it wasn’t about Angelina Jolie’s shenanigans. All sorts of Tweets (i.e. posts) popped up containing anger over the concept of intelligence testing and the permanent public (and more important personal) branding that can ensue afterwards. My contacts on Twitter interpreted my Tweets as support for and true belief in the IQ test. At 12:30 a.m., after much varied discussion and much qualification from me, the storm died down enough for me to go to bed. Embers were still smoldering this morning, as I had a quite few messages waiting for me in my inbox.

As a professional, I am well-schooled in the concept of IQ testing. In developmental and educational Psychology, the practice of attempting to predict academic performance is well studied and widely used. I know the history of IQ testing, I know how it is statistically ‘normed,’ I know the design of the questions, the infrastructure of the test and subjects, the list goes on. You can’t get a decent B.S. in Psychology and a M.Ed. in Educational Psychology without studying testing (not just IQ testing) in painful depth. Furthermore, my Masters degree focused on research and measurement. In one course, I actually had to write questions. So yeah, I know about testing.

The sadness and anger that came about over one or two passing posts made me think about how misunderstood the IQ test is. The IQ test (most commonly used is the WISC) is meant to predict academic performance, nothing else (there are controversies surrounding it, the most common attack on the test being that it caters to a very specific population. That is an entirely different post!) But people who aren’t ‘in the business’ of Psychology and testing catch only the brunt of it. And indeed, in some backward districts, one bout of the flu can throw you off an appropriate academic track for your the rest of your elementary career. The psychological effects of knowing your IQ test score and the public’s view of it can be devasting and long-lasting.

Those emotions definitely came out on Twitter last night. Many parents and educators felt some relief from the pressure since 1983 when Howard Gardner published a book that proposed other types of intelligences (like Interpersonal) that weren’t measured by any IQ tests. Dr. Gardner touched a nerve, in the same way a high-level researcher does when she announces scientifically sound evidence that chicken soup helps heal the common cold; We all (especially mothers) sent up a resounding “DUH!”

Today for Wacko Wednesdays, I’ll present Multiple Intelligences. I’ll outline Dr. Gardner’s famous theory for my friends on Twitter and writers struggling over the lack of depth in their characters. Have no fear if your IQ score in 2nd grade was less than ideal! Don’t worry if your main character is a dud! Below are some interesting skills that can liven up any party, fictional or non!

Have you thought about your character’s pretend IQ scores? Is he a genius of observation (Sherlock Holmes) or is he on the very low end of the IQ distribution (Lennie Small - Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men)? Is she street smart (Stephanie Plum) or totally innocent to the ways of the world (Alice in Wonderland)? We all know the stereotype of the absent-minded professor or the waitress with a heart of gold. The mechanic that can fix anything under the sun. The painter who solves a mounting problem for the NASA space shuttle crew. The kind neighbor who truly wants to know the answer to ‘How are you doing?’ The awesome kid with the crappy parents who you wish you could just adopt, but who seems to make her own way in the world despite her horrid circumstances. The list goes on. Mix one of the ‘alternate’ intelligences in their make-ups and you’ll have a recipe for memorable characters.

According to the on-line free encyclopedia Wikipedia, “Gardner originally identified seven core intelligences: linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, musical, interpersonal and intrapersonal. In 1999 he added an eighth, the naturalistic intelligence, and indicated that investigation continues on whether there is an existential intelligence.” (I’ve read the entry and it seems accurate).

Please read the Wikipedia entry for more detail. I will give a very brief description along with some creative examples of characters who display those traits. Wikipedia quotes are in italics.

Verbal-Linguistic: Good at languages, words, speaking, etc. Bi-lingual characters would be skilled in this. Mix up the Spanish and English syntax sometimes when your character speaks to show a more common person. To write a snooty character, have him correct his Mexican mother’s syntax in both languages. “Careers which suit those with this intelligence include writers, lawyers, philosophers, journalists, politicians and teachers.”

Logical-Mathematical: Sherlock Holmes all the way. Deduction, computer coding, lie detecting, research, etc. Less about math than logical reasoning. A typical character would be a small girl who has a lisp and is terribly shy but is a crackerjack detective; she can also see through her evil grandmother’s lies. “Careers which suit those with this intelligence include scientists, mathematicians, engineers, doctors and economists.”

Spatial: Can mentally picture objects. Wait, you think, “We can all do this.” But can you turn the mental image of the object over, around, up, down, sideways and inside out? Spatial reasoning types do this at (and with) their breakfasts. They never get lost either, as they have a very keen sense of direction. Mice are also good at this. Drop your ‘stupid’ (yet spatially inclined) main character in a maze with a bunch of Harvard students and see who gets out first. “Careers which suit those with this intelligence include artists, engineers, and architects.”

Bodily-Kinesthetic: Super skilled sporty type, performers, learn more by physically doing a task than seeing it done. Imagine a character who is a member of a circus family that is mute but is the equivalent of a savant on the trapeze; he can do stunts that no-one in the world has done, and he can be soggy-wet drunk doing them. “Careers which suit those with this intelligence include athletes, dancers, actors, surgeons, comedians, builders, soldiers and artisans.”

Musical: Very aware of sounds, rhythms, patterns in sounds, tones. Can memorize hundreds, if not thousands, of melodies. The kid on the street corner who knocks out a beat with stolen drumsticks. The practically deaf composer. The temporary secretary in the office who is an amateur opera singer, struggling to get a bit part on Broadway. “Careers which suit those with this intelligence include instrumentalists, singers, conductors,disc-jockeys, and composers.”

Interpersonal: Plays well with others. Can read a face like a kid can read a ‘Snickers’ logo. Sometimes swayed in the tides of other people’s emotions. Empathetic. A way to twist the interpersonal skill is to have a creepy ESP character that knows the emotions of people just by standing next to them. Make the character blind to boot. Great stuff. “Careers which suit those with this intelligence include politicians, managers, teachers, social workers and diplomats.”

Intrapersonal: See the difference? Inter and InTRA? InTRApersonal skills have to do with self-reflection. These types are deep, man. The neighborhood philosopher who reads Plato on her stoop every night and answers every question with a metaphor for the soul. The hippie skateboarder punk who sits alone, pondering the wheel that is the universe. “Careers which suit those with this intelligence include philosophers, psychologists, theologians, writers and scientists.”

What other intelligences can you think of, like “street smarts” that are a mash-up of two or more of the 7 cited above? What is a “chicken soup” kind of intelligence that isn’t listed and can’t be measured so easily? Spiritual intelligence? Moral? Existential? Where do you, and your characters, fit in this wide and uncharted territory of the mind?

That was an abysmal loss for the Yankees. Mike Mussina was dominant, even if he did give up 2 ER. 2 ER against the offense is fine for any club. However, the Yankee offense was totally brutal in Moose's outing as the team only mustered 1 ER off of a solo shot by Alex Rodriguez (off of Scott Feldman, what?). Texas has one of the worst pitching staffs in baseball, therefore, this 1 R loss is all the more embarrassing. In fact, Feldman had never won a road game until today, that's how bad this loss was.

Although I'm emphasizing the negative right now, there were some positives. Brett Gardner looked great at the plate, even if he didn't get a hit. He worked counts and busted out of the box, narrowly missing a base hit and beating out what could have been a double play. Also, with the way the offense is going right now, you'd have to assume that they're poised for a breakout. Hopefully they'll do enough to win this series against Texas, and then, maybe against Boston, the breakout will occur.

Confucius (551-479 BC) taught that the perfect gentleman had to excel in the following “arts”: mathematics, poetry, music, calligraphy, archery, charioteering, and rituals.

Howard Gardner (1943- present) suggested that each individual had multiple intelligences, and that these included mathematics, verbal-linguistic, music, visual-spatial, bodily kinesthetics, intrapersonal and interpersonal.

Is it possible that Confucius’ notion of a well-rounded person possessing many talents, might be the precursor of Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligences?
-----

A Virginia State Police Trooper survives his cruiser being hit by a tractor trailer this morning.

Investigators tell us Trooper P.C. Gardner was pulled over on the right shoulder of Interstate 81 in Rockbridge County around 6:47 a.m., and had just released a traffic violator, when he heard a vehicle hit the rumble strips, looked up, saw an oncoming UPS tractor trailer, and jumped into the passenger seat of his cruiser before the truck hit it.

The UPS truck lost control, hit a guardrail, and went down an embankment.

Luckily, neither the trooper nor the driver is seriously hurt. EMS crews took Trooper Gardner to Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington with cuts, bruises, and scrapes.

State Police charged the driver of the UPS truck, 57 year old Mikel Elliott from Blacksburg with reckless driving.

State Police are still investigating the crash.

- Buffy Weill-Greenberg
So before The Apprentice went all Brangelina and invited celebrities to comp

- Buffy Weill-Greenberg

So before The Apprentice went all Brangelina and invited celebrities to compete to raise funds for corporations which would in turn raise money for charity (celebrity/corporate philanthropy is a topic for another column), Donald Trump told his contestants that he would divide them into the haves and have-nots. (For a refresher on that season, read this.)

Here is our country at a glance, according to Too Much:

Try visualizing wealth in the United States as a three-piece pie, with one piece going to the top 1 percent, one to the next richest 9 percent, and one to everyone else. In 2004, America's top 1 percent held over $2.5 trillion more in net worth than the entire bottom 90 percent, according to Federal Reserve data supplemented by the annual Forbes 400 list.

***

In 2004, the nation's top 1 percent raked in more income than the bottom 40 percent, Congressional Budget Office research released in December 2006 indicates.

Every year Forbes rates the top earners in entertainment. People who receive obscene amounts of money for modeling, acting, singing or just being famous for being bootylicious (my big butted sister Kim K.) I don't care what they can do -- no one deserves to earn that much money.

So in a semi-regular column I'll go through that list and break down what their income could pay for in our country, if that person limited themselves to a $4 million/year salary. (And yes, I'll include what the celeb pays out in charity -- I'll be fair.) In a May 2007 story Too Much published a story on an income cap:

The United States needs an income cap, Gardner posits in the new Foreign Policy, that limits the amount of money a single individual can annually take home to no more than “100 times as much money as the average worker in a society earns in a year.”

“If the average worker makes $40,000,” Gardner proposes, “the top compensated individual may keep $4 million a year.”

A sleight-of-hand method I devised will be published in either the August or September issue of Genii Magazine. It is a new method for causing a finger ring to appear to penetrate off a cord onto which it has been laced. I performed this effect for Martin Gardner last year and fooled him, which is a source of no small pride for me!

This publication will happen at the same time as the 2008 Southeastern Association of Magicians convention (August 21-23 in Atlanta), a magicians-only conference at which I will be performing and lecturing.

In an almost monotone voice that exudes inevitability, candidate for Linn County sheriff Brian Gardn

In an almost monotone voice that exudes inevitability, candidate for Linn County sheriff Brian Gardner continues to make the same point leading up to the Tuesday primary. It boils down to this (and I paraphrase): You would be an idiot not to vote for me.

Gardner's opponent, Bill Elam, is not doing a good job of rebutting this, at least not publicly.

Gardner is third in command in Don Zeller's generally well-respected sheriff's office. He speaks and acts on behalf of the sheriff regularly, he has a long list of impressive credentials and he says frankly that he's always wanted to be sheriff, spent his career training for the job and now knows that he's ready.

He enjoys broad support. Everyone from City Council Member Brian Fagan to Mount Vernon businesswoman Mary Quass to Rich Patterson of the Indian Creek Nature Center has contributed to his campaign. Also: Linda Langston, Amy Boyle, Joan McCalmant, Mary Lou Pazour, Rich Mahaney and many others. Michael Carr, the Linn County jail administrator, donated $500 to Gardner's campaign. I called him to make sure the name and address listed on Gardner's campaign finance report matched the Michael Carr who operates the county's extremely cost-effective jail.

It did. "He's the only candidate, as far as I'm concerned," Carr said.

Elam, a deputy who mans the metal detector at the entrance to the county courthouse on most days, would appear to have an uphill battle. He's not a polished public speaker, his basic campaign message is that the troops under Zeller and Gardner aren't happy and need to be, and he's dogged by Audrey Rahn, a Cedar Rapids resident who's still angry about Elam's role in an infamous dog castration in the early 1990s.

But Elam has been able to raise some money and he's got one group firmly behind him: the unions. The Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 125 and four other union groups including the IBEW Educational Committee in D.C., have donated to his campaign fund.

Whoever wins on Tuesday will face former Cedar Rapids Public Safety Commissioner David Zahn.

They are passionate collectors of the works of Danish designer, Bjorn Wiinblad (1918-2006). Bjorn is known as the 'designer's designer'. His work is diverse and encompasses studio art pottery, glass, silver, posters and costume design. He was the Rosenthal Porcelain company's chief designer for 35 years and his work has been exhibited worldwide including in London's Victoria and Albert Museum and New York's Museum of Modern Art.

Both Elizabeth and Richard are equally passionate about Wiinblad's work, but in the beginning Elizabeth was the collector. They started collecting five years ago through a Danish contact and now they have more than 150 items in their collection.

Elizabeth and Richard's collection is throughout their house; it's something they love to see every day. Elizabeth says the beauty of Bjorn Wiinblad Wall Plate 's work is that you can buy a lovely little piece cheaply or you can spend a great deal of money on his large statues. Elizabeth and Richard will keep on collecting because they say, "There is always something out there that you haven't seen before and of course you really feel like you'd like to have it".

Since the 1950s, Rosenthal studio-line has led the industry in modern, avant-garde design. Internationally renowned designers and artists such as Walter Gropius, Timo Sarpaneva, Tapio Wirkkala, Mario Bellini and Bjorn Wiinblad have all contributed to building Rosenthal's brand name. Recent collaborations with designers Jasper Morrison and Platt and Young have led to many new product innovations. For example, Rosenthal secured the worldwide license for reproductions of Andy Warhol's works and designs in crystal and ceramics.
