October 07 2008

The internet bank Icesave has suspended all deposits and withdrawals from customers' accounts after the Icelandic authorities stepped in to rescue its parent company Landsbanki.

Landsbanki's other UK operation Heritable Bank has also stopped savers making withdrawals and is no longer offering mortgages.

Between them the two brands have more than 300,000 customers in the UK, with Icesave winning savers with its high interest rates on savings accounts and Isas.

Today a statement on its website said: "We are not currently processing any deposits or any withdrawal requests through our Icesave internet accounts. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause our customers. We hope to provide you with more information shortly."

Although Landsbanki is set to continue trading as normal in Iceland, it is not clear what will happen to Icesave or Heritable Bank in the UK, but the Financial Services Compensation Scheme has said it is preparing for the bank to go into default.

A message on its website tells consumers: "The Financial Services Authority in the UK has reported that Icesave is now expected to go into insolvency proceedings in Iceland and this would trigger an FSCS default."

Yesterday, Icesave's website went down and its UK call centre is reported to have received unprecedented volumes of calls from savers worried about the safety of their cash.

But a spokeswoman for the group insisted that call volumes had been normal and the website was down due to technical difficulties.

Concerns about the Icelandic economy came to a head yesterday, and the Icelandic government last night presented an emergency bill giving it sweeping powers over the nation's banks.

This morning the Icelandic Financial Supervisory Authority (IFSA) announced it was taking control of Landsbanki, as it became the latest victim of the credit crunch.

The IFSA said domestic deposits were fully guaranteed by the government, and that "Landsbanki's domestic branches, call centres, cash machines and internet operations will be open for business as usual".

Guarantees

The 100% guarantee does not extend to UK savers, who would have to apply for compensation both in Iceland and the UK, and would only be able to recover up to £50,000.

The first €20,000 (£16,264) they hold is protected under the Icelandic government's scheme, and the remainder up to £50,000 by the UK Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FCSC).

A spokesman for Landsbanki said 95% of Icesave's customers had deposited less than £50,000, so would be fully protected by the FCSC.

At the start of 2008, Heritable had around £900m on deposit from UK savers.

It used the money to provide specialist finance for property developments, and some residential mortgages. All new lending appears to have been suspended.

Unlike, the savers who had their money in an Icesave, all Heritable savers' money is covered by the FSCS up to £50,000 (£100,000 for joint accounts) in the event that Landsbanki ceases to exist.

Trading normally

As news of Landsbanki's failure emerged representatives of Kaupthing, the other major Icelandic bank with a significant UK savings operation, were desperately trying to halt a Northern Rock-style run.

By mid-morning concerned savers were deluging the bank's retail division Kaupthing Edge's call centre keen to establish whether the bank was still trading, and in many cases to move their money.

The call centre number has been permanently engaged all morning.

Kaupthing Edge, which is thought to have at least 150,000 UK savers on its books, had been offering some of the most attractive savings rates in the market for the past few months.

A spokeswoman for the firm said: "Kaupthing has not been nationalised and is still trading normally. Yes, people are concerned, but I stress there is no reason to move your money. There is no reason to panic."

She added: "All savers' money is covered to £50,000 by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) and nothing has changed today in this respect. The company is processing all requests to move money in the normal way."

I’m a cheesehead. For those of you unfamiliar with this strange term, it means I’m from the Dai

I’m a cheesehead. For those of you unfamiliar with this strange term, it means I’m from the Dairy State, Wisconsin. I used to have an actual cheesehead, a spongy wedge of cheddar that you wear on your head to Green Bay Packer games...but I digress. What I really want to talk about today is just plain cheese. My family eats a lot of it. In fact we pretty much eat it everyday. When I met my husband, I noticed he had a creative way of solving a common problem with cheese: mold. We’ve all seen it, that ugly otherworldly green fuzzy stuff growing on our old food in the fridge. Cheese always seems to attract mold, mainly because it is sold in large bricks that take a while for the average person or family to consume. So anyways, back to my husband. I saw his idea for combating mold on cheese and I liked it. When we got married, I tweaked it a little to suit our needs and now I have a solid system in place to grapple with the green. So what in the world am I talking about? Read on.

The Problem
You buy a brick of cheddar. After opening it, you slowly begin slicing pieces here and there for sandwiches and crackers. A few weeks later, you notice mold growing on the remainder of your brick, and unless you’re my dad (he’ll eat anything), you decide to toss it. Food has been wasted, and worse, you’ve actually tossed away one of your most precious resources, money.

The Solution
The secret my husband discovered as a bachelor was that he could freeze cheese. Let me explain, because if you’ve ever tried to freeze entire bricks of cheese, you’re probably about to complain how crumbly and annoying it was after you thawed it. This is why you need to slice it first. Here’s what I do:

Buy cheese, lots of cheese. We like all kinds of cheese at our house (who doesn’t enjoy a little variety), so every few months when our cheese supply is getting low, I splurge. I may buy 6 different kinds, all bricks. I prefer 8 oz bricks because they make better slices, but we’ll get to that later.

Slice Slice Slice. This step is tedious and I admit that it is my least favorite part. But trust me, it pays off in the end. After I’ve arrived home with my cheese loot (lets say 6 bricks), I promptly open each package and line them up on my counter (or if you don’t have time right away, feel free to do this later as unopened cheese in the fridge lasts for months). For 6 eight-ounce bricks of cheese I need 12 little sandwich baggies plus a sharpie marker, a cheese slicer, and a cutting board. Each brick will slice easily into approximately 16 slices (cutting the short way) if I cut each slice the thickness of about 2-3mm (about the thickness of my standard cheese slicer tool).

Bag & Freeze. After my cheese cutting frenzy, I stack the slices 4 high and then place 4 piles side by side into each baggie, labeled of course with the date and type of cheese (we keep our cheese types together in the same bag, but feel free to mix it up for even more variety!). In the end you have 12 bags, each containing 4 oz of cheese. After I get all the baggies full, I stack them and place them in my freezer for later.

The Definition of Convenience
So what good does all this work do you? Simply keep one bag in the fridge at a time, pulling out the next frozen bag when the current bag gets empty. The slices thaw nicely and are right there ready for you to use. The mold problem is solved because it doesn’t take very long to eat 16 slices of cheese. Finally, never waste time slicing cheese when you are busy with other meal preparations, because the cheese is already sliced!

Wait a Minute, I Don’t Eat That Much Cheese!
Not a cheesehead like me, you say? That’s fine. It’s really easy to make the necessary modifications to this system to suit your family’s needs. If you don’t eat that much cheese, or if you eat more, then simply change the amount of slices per bag. I found that 16 slices works for us, but a different number might be better for you.

One Last Money-Saving Tip
Cheese isn’t cheap. If you can time it right, try to buy your load of cheese when it goes on sale at your grocery store. Also consider buying whichever brand is currently the least expensive, generic or not. We’re not too picky about cheese brands at our house, so I buy whichever brand has the least strain on my wallet.

Reader Reflection
This idea is just one way of tackling moldy cheese. Anyone else ever think of a creative solution to this problem? Please share!

Some days ago, millions of people saw the vice-presidential debate between Biden and Palin (it was fine and there were no blows), and tomorrow Tuesday (October 7th), we’ll see Obama and McCain again (I smell another win for …). Although people may be in complete disagreement with the ones from the opposite party, even members from both political affiliations can have fun at Atom.com by playing a cool Flash game à la Mortal Kombat called Kung-Fu Election.

Let’s begin with the gameplay. You may be disappointed (or not) because of the lack of fatalities, but the gameplay, control and mechanism feels like the one from the 90s versions of Midway’s Mortal Kombat and Atari’s Pit Fighter. The action is not like the one in 2D Capcom fighting games, but it’s still fun to play.

The graphics are realistic. I'm surprised by the realistic graphic details of the game. The characters look awesome, but make sure your PC has a normal amount of RAM. Even in computers from two or three years ago, if your PC has 256MB DDR, it would work a bit slow. Make sure you don't have that many applications open or in use. Anything higher than that should be good.

The characters have been updated, meaning people can choose a fight between Palin and Hillary Clinton. Of course, some of the previous presidential candidates are present like Guillani, Biden, Richardson, Edwards, Romney and others. Edwards (he does a Hadouken to freeze his opponent just like Sub-Zero) and Bill Clinton (you can see him when you use one of Hillary's special moves) both look like Ryu, and Hillary seems to be a fan of Chun-Li, from Street Fighter II. Cindy McCain has the same costume as the main character from Kill Bill, while Huckabee and Giuliani look somewhat like Raiden and Baraka (not Barack). Biden's character seems to come from Namco Bandai's Soul Calibur games. Michelle Obama is also present in the game.

Every character has two special attacks. Make sure to practice with your favorite fighters a lot in the training room to execute their attacks effectively and get to understand your opponents' abilities as well. The one I don't like that much is Palin's hockey stick because it can turn into a rifle and can fire three bullets at you, one at a time. That special attack may take some of fun away from the game, unless you find out someone else’s special move to counterattack with, or be patient in order to learn your opponents’ techniques to beat him or her. The same can happen with other characters as you get to play the game. There’s no time limit (cool!), and no way to pause the game ( :( ). My wish list: a 2-player mode, and an online mode (like Street Fighter Online), and maybe even add past presidents like George Washington. It’s a great Flash game to play. I’d like to know now if the current president is a hidden playable character (like Goro is in Mortal Kombat Armageddon).

If you've played Bible Fight (where there is a hidden, playable character indeed) on AdultSwim.com and had lots of fun with it, then you should definitively try Kung-Fu Election. Unlike politics, this is fun. Like politics, be careful as to whom to choose. At least, in this game, the best fighter will win without cheating. To play this game, go to www.kungfuelection.com.

En español | In English

Those of you who have been following my Dell Latitude D830 laptop freeze saga, know that I have been struggling for 3+ months with my laptop simply stopping to respond to mouse clicks/keys. The only way out used to be a hard reset using the power button. In the comments section of my previous post, I had documented all the tweaks that I had tried in hope of resolving the issue, and many people pitched in with their ideas and experience as this is a fairly widespread issue. Well, since my latest changes, I have been freeze free for the last 3+ weeks, and I think I am finally ready to declare victory.

So what might have resolved my freeze issue? I think the key issue is nView - Nvidia's multi-display software that runs by default on a Dell laptop with a Nvidia video card. While, I do use dual displays at work and love them, you can manage dual displays just fine using built-in Windows capabilities. So, if you are experiencing freeze issues, consider performing the following steps -

Disable nView COMPLETELY - all the startup programs related to nView (NvCpl, NvMcTray, nwiz) and the NVIDIA Display Driver Service (NVSvc). This is a necessary step to resolving the freeze issue but may not be the only step.

Update the nVidia driver - I know that I had tried disabling nView but that did not resolve my freeze issue. I then performed several steps and one of them was to update the nVidia Quadro NVS 140M driver to 174.31 XP WHQL, A05, and I suspect that might have been a critical step.

Apply Windows XP SP3 - again, I am not sure if this is needed to resolve the freezes, but I know I did this and it is probably not a bad thing to do if you are running XP.

Change power options - again, may not be necessary, but I tend to do this anyways - turn off hard disk sleep in power options.

Apply BIOS update - patched my BIOS to A13 - this one I really doubt had anything to do with fixing my issue but I did do this before my issue was finally resolved.

I just hope that I don't have to eat my words that my freeze issue has been resolved - I don't really have the time to deal with this anymore!

In case, this post helps you get past your freeze issue, do post a quick comment as that might help others who are experiencing the same issue. All the best!

We needed a Mysql Innodb Freeze mechanism for Spinn3r’s database operations, so we decided to

We needed a Mysql Innodb Freeze mechanism for Spinn3r's database operations, so we decided to isolate Google's Innodb Freeze feature from Google's V2 patch. The Innodb Freeze can be toggled on and off like so :

set global innodb_disallow_writes=ON
set global innodb_disallow_writes=OFF

Isolating this patch was easy since its a very small code change.
I simply patched Mysql with the Google V2 patch.
Then I started up Cscope and searched for the string: "innodb_disallow_writes"
From there I was able to trace the various C/C++ symbols; finding all the code for this feature...
I then edited an unpatched Mysql; manually pasting in the Innodb Freeze code changes.
Finally I diffed this manually edited Mysql against the unpatched Mysql producing
this Innodb Freeze patch for Mysql 5.0.37; it's 323 lines small and only modifies 7 files of the Mysql source.

I have re-targeted the patch for Mysql 5.0.67 which will also patch Percona's High Performance Mysql 5.0.68: Innodb Freeze patch for Mysql 5.0.67

I've briefly tested the patch and verified via md5sum that after setting global innodb_disallow_writes to OFF; data on disk does not change and all writes via the Innodb storage engine are blocked. However if you have set innodb_flush_log_at_trx_commit=0 in the my.cnf then updating an existing row will succeed. However the change will only exist in memory and will not be written to disk until you unfreeze (set global innodb_disallow_writes=OFF).

This is a small step towards Spinn3r's upgrade to Mysql 5.0.x. I'll probably end up extracting another feature from the Google V2 patch; and then eventually re-target these for Percona's High Performance patch Mysql 5.0.68.

Recently my MacBook started to "freeze" (with the "spinning wheel of death") when I tried to log on after it went to sleep, or even when I tried to shut it down. After some investigation (involving painful modifications) I realized it was Spotlight issue; Spotlight stalled at some point and could not finish indexing.

The cause: For my case, I found that there were several big but corrupt files. After deleting them, I am not encountering any of the previous issues at all.

Meanwhile, during the "investigation" I mentioned earlier, I made myself a new account. So I was trying to move my RSS subscription in Mail to my new account, but I couldn't find any "Export" menu. Well, a solution for this is to just copy the RSS folder in the Library.

The Bank of Canada has lined up a $30 billion US currency swap with the U.S. Federal Reserve.

The Bank of Canada and other central banks have expanded their currency swap deals with the U.S. Federal Reserve to have U.S. dollars handy if they need to lubricate seized-up credit markets.

The move was spurred by "continued strains in short-term funding markets," the Canadian central bank said Monday in announcing the tripling of what is called a swap facility or reciprocal currency arrangement.

The Fed agreed to provide as much as $30 billion US, up from a $10 billion figure announced only 11 days earlier, although none of that cash has yet changed hands, a Bank of Canada statement said.

"This facility would be accessed, should the need arise, to provide U.S.-dollar liquidity in Canada. If drawn on by the Bank of Canada, the swap would provide liquidity facilities for use by financial institutions in Canada," it said.

In the background was the fact the U.S. dollar is the nearest thing to a world currency, especially for corporate transactions. A financial crisis that began with bad mortgage loans has choked off lending by many American banks.

Related moves were announced by the European Central Bank and the central banks of Japan, Britain, France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland and Australia. The ECB, for example, doubled its swap line with the Fed to $240 billion.

The Bank of Canada statement said the deal provides "additional flexibility to address rapidly evolving developments" in financial markets.

"The bank judges that it is not necessary for it to draw on this swap facility at this time, but that it is prudent to have the agreement in place. Should the swap be drawn on, the details of the liquidity facilities provided would depend on the specific market circumstances at the time."

Oops! You blinked and summer is already gone. In a few hours it will be October and before you k

Oops! You blinked and summer is already gone. In a few hours it will be October and before you know it temperatures will be drastically lower and our attention will be on the upcoming holidays, travel and family. Just because you may not be swimming in your pool doesn't mean you can ignore it! Fall is a dangerous time of year for pool equipment, because many pool owners are caught off guard by that first cold snap.

Prepare yourself for the colder temperatures by taking care of a few things early:

(1) If you have a DE or cartridge filter, it is time to contact your Plano pool service to have your filter cleaned (assuming you probably did it 6 months ago or more to get ready for the summer). Many of you think you'd rather wait until after all the leaves fall, but if you're filter is already dirty from summer use waiting another couple of months for that pressure to build up can be the difference between just a filter cleaning and a call to the Plano pool repair company to replace some damaged filter media. As with so many things, proper maintenance on a regular schedule will save you money in the end!

(2) If you have a DE or sand filter with a backwash valve or a multiport, consider having a Plano swimming pool cleaning technician provide a service to lube the moving parts and replace any worn gaskets. Again, this is much cheaper than replacing the piston assembly or the entire valve if you wait until those wearable parts give way and lead to greater damage.

(3) The most important of all of these (early on anyway) is to get in the habit of emptying your skimmer baskets several times a week. When the first cold snap hits and leaves start falling and the wind starts blowing, you can have an alarming amount of leaves fall in your pool in a matter of minutes. If your pool is working properly, the skimmer(s) will pull in leaves on the surface of your pool. It doesn't take long for a skimmer to get packed with leaves and if too many leaves are in your skimmer, water flow is restricted. If the water flow is restricted too much, your filter pump will begin to overheat and now you're quickly on the path to equipment damage. You'll have to apply some common sense to how often you have to empty your skimmer baskets depending on the landscaping around your pool. If you have a tree that hangs over your pool, you may have to empty the baskets morning and night every day when the leaves really start falling. Many times the pool owners who get caught by surprise are the new home owners who live next door to someone with a big tree. It never fails if your neighbor has a great big tree, a large number of their leaves will have to be fished out of your pool! If you are regularly having your pool cleaned by a Plano pool service, many things like emptying pump baskets and backwashing filters will be taken care of for you. However, certain times of year (mainly the spring and fall for most landscaping) you'll need to help out your pool by keeping your skimmer baskets empty. Cleaning them out once a week during your regular service by a Plano pool cleaning technician simply won't be enough in many situations.

(4) Freeze guard systems - do you know if you have one? If so, do you know if it works? Many timers have built in freeze guards, but other systems have separate ones installed. Normally, this is labeled on the outside of your box. If you aren't sure if you have one, ask your Plano pool repair service to look at your equipment and test any existing freeze guard for you. You can test the system yourself using ice cubes or a can of compressed air (like is commonly sold at office supply stores for removing dust from computers). The freeze guard's sole purpose is to manually override any existing timer settings any time the outside temperature at the equipment drops below a preset temperature (generally set between 34-40 degrees Fahrenheit). The system will remain on until the temperature rises above the trigger temperature. The concept is simply to keep water flowing through the pipes and equipment to prevent ice from forming in the plumbing lines. This is only practical in climates where freezes normally only occur overnight and for brief stretches (i.e. Dallas Texas), not in parts of the country where it is more practical to close a pool down for the winter and drain out all plumbing lines of fluids that freeze during sustained periods of freezing temperatures). Every pool in Plano, tx should have a freeze guard. If you don't have one, contact the Plano pool repair company today for an equipment evaluation and a price quote for your available options so you can make an informed decision on what is best suited for your needs.

I’m back from a freeze on my blog, which was mainly due to the fact that my veg boxes were all

I'm back from a freeze on my blog, which was mainly due to the fact that my veg boxes were all becoming rather similar. But I'm delighted to report that this has now changed. The other week I received a lovely bunch of runner beans for the first time, which brought back some of my happiest memories from childhood.

Back when my parents used part of their garden for vegetables, runner-bean tepees were a regular sight. The beans seemed to grow like the clappers and every day my parents would disappear down a tunnel of bamboo canes to pick out the latest finds among the curling fronds and delicate red flowers. Mum and I then sat on the step with a mountain of beans, trimming the edges and cutting them at an angle into elongated diamonds.

So I was delighted to find runner beans in my veg box, and true to form, they appeared in the box for three weeks in a row. Now, there's only so many beans a girl can eat, so for the first time in my veg box venture, I decided to try my hand at freezing. I trimmed the edges from my runner beans and cut them into diamonds just like I remembered, then put them in a freezer bag, which went straight into the freezer box. Very happy with myself I called Mum, only to discover that there's a bit more to freezing than that.

Here's the 'proper' way to freeze runner beans:

• Wash your runner beans in cold water
• Trim all round the edges, top and tail, and cut into your preferred size (did that!)
• Blanch your beans by dropping them into boiling water and boiling them for 3 minutes
• Drain in a colander or sieve and run them under cold water for a minute
• Shake the water off and dry the beans on kitchen paper
• Put your beans in a freezer bag
• Write the date on the bag – runner beans will keep for around 3 months in a freezer

Well . . . now I know what to do next time!

By Nathan Sharp

Utah may be 25th in the nation for occurrences of identity theft, but it now also has the fastest credit freeze laws in the country.

"Utah's new credit freeze law stops identity thieves cold and quick," said Utah Attorney General Mike Shurtleff in a news release. "Consumers can freeze and thaw their credit in 15 minutes."

According to the news release, the law passed in 2006 but came into effect this September to allow credit bureaus time to reprogram their computers. The previous standard allowed the bureaus up to three days to freeze the accounts after a report was made.

When a freeze is placed on an account, the credit reporting agencies will not allow access to consumer reporting files or credit score unless authorization is given.

If there is suspicion that personal information has been stolen, the Department of the Attorney General advises to follow these four steps to freeze an account:

Contact the three credit bureaus and give your name, date of birth and Social Security number.

For a small fee, credit bureaus will freeze credit and provide people with a pin number or password which can be used to open a new credit account and make purchases.

The freeze prevents anyone from using that credit without your knowledge and prevents thieves from opening any new accounts in your name. According to consumersunion.org, even if someone has found your name, Social Security number and date of birth, they will be blocked from accessing or using that information.

"Nearly everybody said it couldn't be done but now Utah has the nation's first 15-minute credit thaw cycle," said Sen. Carlene Walker, in a news release. "It is a win-win solution because it protects consumers and

businesses."

Freezing an account will not affect current lines of credit and will not prevent credit companies from keeping track of those current lines of credit.

Dag mensen..

Misschien uiteindelijk in productie brengen?

DOEI!

yeah, i didn't have power the first part of the week, the "tropical depression" hit my area. but no worries! everything is all & well. some power lines & trees are down, but for the most part everythings okay. right now i'm jamming to family force 5's new cd (dance or die) you should check it out if you haven't already. its pretty great.
last week my youth pastor wanted me to read my paper for the youth group at h2o (our youth service-if you want to call it that-on wednesday nights). well i was sick & inaudible. so that didn't work out. yesterday he shot me a message on facebook asking me to read it last night. so i accepted his offer. I'VE NEVER BEEN MORE NERVOUS IN MY LIFE. ever. i don't think you're comprehending what i'm saying never in my life have i been more scared. i was more scared of reading something that i wrote than riding mr freeze for the first time!! so i get to living water & do practice, & then i head to the gym to figure out what it is that i'm supposed to be doing. brian (my youth pastor) told me i should do it first thing, as soon as the opening song was over he'd introduce it & everything. so he did. i got up there & told the story on how it ended up on heyjackradio.com & then i continued to read my paper. then i reminded everyone of "hey jack radio day" on october 16. i sat down & just shook, i was convinced i stuttered all the way through my paper although chelsea, olivia & miss connie tried to convince me otherwise. then a friend asked if i was still interested in sponsoring a child through compassion. i told her i was & she asked if i would want to help her with hers, that she didn't know if she could continue to do it on her own. i graciously accepted the offer. so in 2 months i'll start sponsoring a child instead of in june. i'm really really excited i've wanted to sponsor a child for +4 years(dead-set on it, i've wanted to sponsor since i was like...5 & those commercials were always on tv).
tonight there's a game. & i'm trying really hard not to fail biology, so i may have to pay mr z a visit tomorrow for some more tutoring before my test, & i think you're caught up on everything now!
