I'm trying to follow the rule of 3s, but when you've taught over 100 classes in 3 years, this is a challenging task.  Should I include handouts created for an undergraduate vs graduate course? Humanities vs Social Sciences? Hands-on library session vs lecture hall session? ESL students vs high school students? Blogs vs traditional paper hand-outs? Materials from year 1 or materials from year 3? Should my hand-outs demonstrate the natural evolution of my teaching abilities or should I just stick with only the best ones (i.e. the most recent materials)? I have to remember that file documents provide evidence of your work. In the guidelines regarding documents supporting your file, it stresses that you should not include EVERYTHING, but this is easier said than done.

Next week, I will be meeting with file advisor #2 (complete opposite of file advisor #1) for feedback on my file. This meeting should prove interesting! In the meanwhile, I doubt those dreams will go away!

Quando uma tecnologia nova é produzida é preciso muito cuidado e carinho para apresentá-la. No princípio do cinema, os irmãos Lumière acabaram por decretar a sua morte em seu próprio nascimento, afirmando que o cinema seria uma invenção sem futuro. No entanto, as primeiras imagens foram cuidadosamente enquadradas, usando telas do Impressionismo como referência. Logo que pensaram em encenar esquetes, a família Lumière convocou seus empregados para se juntarem a eles e representarem um Cézanne, Os jogadores de cartas, (Les joueurs de carte) documentado em movimento. A chegada de um trem à gare, (L'arrivée d'un train en gare de La Ciotat) é famosa pela lenda de ter causado pânico nas pessoas que teriam se assustado com a real possibilidade da chegada de um trem. Mesmo que não tenha acontecido desta forma, a platéia realmente ficou deslumbrada e os irmãos Lumière sabiam que teriam sucesso com o efeito de colocar a câmera bem perto da plataforma esperando a chegada de um trem. Além de filmes caseiros e comédias, exploraram vivamente figuras em movimento, como o muro caindo e sendo  reconstruído” em efeito reverso, Démolition d’un mur ou a fumaça dos ferreiros em Le Forgeron.

110 anos depois a tecnologia digital sonha mais uma vez substituir o cinema, agora com a potência de uma projeção com a resolução de mais de 8 milhões de pixels por frame. Recentemente, a resolução 4k foi estabelecida como a imagem padrão do cinema digital recomendada pela DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives), uma associação dos sete maiores estúdios de Hollywood. 4k refere-se ao número de pixels horizontais, 4.096 (multiplicados por 2.160 pixels verticais gerando os 8.847.360 pixels). Trata-se de uma imagem 4 vezes mais definida que a HD e 24 vezes mais definida que a da televisão tradicional. Mas que cenas, que enquadramentos, que tipo de imagem inaugura esse cinema? A princípio, uma imagem incrivelmente nítida, com cores e detalhes vívidos, brilhos intensos e impressionante transparência. Uma imagem em que se vê detalhes do fundo com a nitidez de um plano próximo. Esse efeito de tromp-l’oeil dos Lumière – ou de Masaccio na sua tela Santíssima Trindade em Santa Maria Novella que produzia um efeito de gruta com uma tela bidimensional em 1427 – também pode ser visto na produção holandesa da ópera Era La Notte transmitida ao vivo de Amsterdam para San Diego em 2007. Para ampliar seu efeito de realidade, a ópera foi parcialmente filmada com uma fileira de cadeiras enquadrada na parte inferior da tela, aumentando a impressão de a que ópera acontecia ali, a algumas fileiras de onde estamos sentados.

Veronese versus Leonardo

A imagem tecnicamente considerada “mais definida” é, de um ponto de vista ontológico ou ideológico, uma nova imagem. Lev Manovich em seu artigo “Scale effects”, publicado nesse catálogo, recorda-se dos pintores holandeses do século XVII, certamente por causa dos detalhes chocantes e transparências dos vidros das naturezas-mortas em contraste com os italianos. Uma relação de ordem distinta me veio à mente durante a minha primeira experiência diante dos filmes escaneados ou filmados e projetados em 4K: a sala do Louvre em que vemos a Monalisa, minúscula, cercada por uma multidão de turistas e, exatamente em frente, a tela gigante de Paolo Veronese As bodas de Canã, medindo 70 metros quadrados. Porque o mais famoso Leonardo, senão a mais famosa pintura da história da arte dos nossos tempos foi recentemente colocada em contraste com uma pintura super colorida, dramática, considerada pejorativamente “decorativa” e de apelo populista como a de Veronese (que acho absolutamente fascinante!)? Trata-se de uma provocação? Antes de tudo, claramente não se trata de uma organização por contemporaneidade, quando um pintor apesar de ter vivido no mesmo tempo que outro, pintou de forma diferente. Leonardo morreu dez anos antes de Veronese nascer, aos 67 anos e o Louvre tem obras demais para precisar recorrer a esse tipo de relação. Não se trata também de uma organização por movimento artístico, pois Veronese é um pintor veneziano que às vezes é considerado Maneirista, enquanto Leonardo é de tradição florentina, o suprasumo do Renascimento. Se fosse para estabelecer uma relação de mesma ordem, Ticiano é que seria no nome de equivalente grandeza. Os pintores venezianos estavam interessados na relação entre luz e cor, usando o pincel de forma especial para obter uma textura macia e aveludada. Veneza era uma cidade de influência oriental, luxuosa e suntuosa. A pintura a óleo foi intensamente difundida na região, pois o óleo preservava e garantia a qualidade da imagem em um ambiente úmido que destruía com rapidez os afrescos. O brilho do óleo reflete o brilho das águas. Trata-se de uma cidade de convivência com o duplo, de reflexos contínuos, dos brilhos e transparências dos vidros da pequena Murano. Esse foi o universo explorado por Paolo Veronese, bem distante do mistério transcendente do esfumado de Leonardo.

Que sentido teria esse contraste? A tela grande, suntuosa dividindo o ambiente com a pequena e misteriosa Monalisa? Existem evidentemente outras telas nas paredes adjacentes, mas o contraste entre essa oposição é bem marcante, principalmente se a entrada na sala é marcada pela multidão com flashes anunciando a super star. Resta-nos enfrentar a multidão e furar a barreira até Monalisa ou se retirar andando para trás, pé ante pé, sem perceber o que se passa nas nossas costas. Até que, ao virarmos, somos assombrados pela imensidão colorida de Veronese. Seria uma expressão de uma paixão pelo tesouro veneziano colocado em posição de merecer a fama de Monalisa? Ou, pelo contrário, uma espécie de apelo hegeliano, tentando evidenciar que os esforços dos recursos do gigantesco e do brilhante não valem o milagre da pequena e pouca translúcida Monalisa. De acordo com o provérbio, nem tudo que brilha é ouro, o velho ditado sobre as aparências e as essências.

Contudo o fato de provocar justamente esse contraste resulta em um efeito de dobra, em uma ambigüidade da imagem. De um lado, a bela imagem que apesar de sedutora e gigante é relativamente pouco conhecida, inclusive desprezada como uma imagem “menor”. Do outro lado, a imagem pequena, quase monocolor que necessita de tempo e conhecimento para sua completa fruição, é uma das imagens mais conhecidas do mundo, tratada como celebridade. Como negociar mentalmente com as duas imagens, aceitando a
magnitude de cada uma delas?

Brilhos e transparências

A apresentação dos filmes em 4k começa com uma demonstração da diferença de imagem do nosso DVD e de uma imagem escaneada do filme Baraka, dirigido por Ron Fricke em 1992 e filmado em 70 mm. Fica evidente que essa imagem foi intencionalmente escolhida pela intensidade das cores e brilhos orientais, profundamente sedutores. Podemos verificar as texturas e minúcias de objetos, perceber os contornos dos rostos na multidão de veste branca.

Claro que a comparação proposta é contestável, pois só poderíamos verificar as diferenças e semelhanças se nos fossem apresentadas a imagem em 70mm e a imagem 4k. Mesmo sem poder medir a qualidade de cada uma delas lado a lado, já é sabido que o 4k elimina a granulação cinema, produzindo outra imagem, que poderá ser a imagem das narrativas de um futuro bem próximo. Apesar do preço da produção e projeção, as companhias apostam na tecnologia já experimentando transmissão em tempo real sem perda de qualidade.

Parece que o 4k nasce com uma vocação para a transparência e brilho. Se por um lado o deslumbre dos cristais e dourados nos impressionam, por outro a imagem humana – aquela que tem sido a imagem mais carente e potente de reprodução – também brilha. O rosto humano que foi a paixão do cinema, principalmente em preto-e-branco, causa-nos pavor não mais pelo terror inscrito em suas feições, mas pela abertura dos poros da pele, pelo suor cintilante, ou pela textura impermeável das bochechas das mocinhas que deveriam ser engraçadinhas por que imitam o patético, mas são patéticas tentando ser engraçadinhas imitando o patético. Esse é o exemplo de um filme seriamente sarcástico filmado para a propaganda da empresa de câmeras e material de cinema chamada Red. As câmeras Red estão sendo desenvolvidas nos Estados Unidos - as outras são a canadense Dalsa e a japonesa Olympus, grandes e pesadas demais - ao redor de polêmica e sedução típica de tecnoaficcionados. Ouvem-se comentários de várias lados, a favor e contra, aumentando o mistério e a excitação com a tecnologia e evidenciando a monumental e vigorosa ignorância diante daquilo que está sendo construído. Comenta-se que houve um lançamento das câmeras 4k, mas que ninguém teve real acesso a elas. No site da Red estão anunciadas as câmeras – e inclusive
uma ainda mais potente 5k – com um conjunto de acessórios que custa em torno de 30.000 dólares e exige um depósito de adiantamento, fora o SCRATCH que custa por volta de 32.000 dólares. Com o SCRATCH, um
software/ hardware, é possível decodificar os arquivos filmados e exportá-los para DI (ou Avid) em formato .dpx para edição. Existem outras opções que variam de acordo com o bolso e a velocidade com que se pretende produzir. Ouvi o seguinte comentário de um cineasta experimentado, importante diretor de um cinema de vanguarda sem ser anti-hollywoodiano: o problema é como editar em 4k. Ainda é muito difícil, caro e sem frutos significativos. Segundo ele, na realidade o que as pessoas fazem é editar em 2k e mais tarde escanear para 4k ou copiar 35 mm para ganhar em qualidade. Então para que filmar em 4k se a imagem inicial não será usada? Dois filmes de Steven Soderbergh, The Informant e Guerrilla, estão sendo anunciados como tendo sido parcialmente filmados em 4k. No último encontro dos comitês de tecnologia
da ASC (American Society of Cinematographers) que aconteceu no início de maio de 2008 em Los Angeles, chegou-se à conclusão de que a câmera Red não é exatamente 4k, pois o seu sensor responde com certa deficiência. Para alguns técnicos a idéia é que se essa câmera é 4k, o projetor das imagens 4k é logicamente 12k. Por outro lado, essa é uma associação de engenheiros e técnicos da indústria tradicional de câmeras que quer proteger o seu mercado, sua invenção e o caríssimo investimento para concorrer com uma novata
como a Red.

Primeiros filmes

Como no início do cinema, os filmes são curtíssimos, de no máximo 6, 7 minutos, geralmente com apenas um enquadramento, mostrando performances musicais, pontos de vista turísticos e pequenos esquetes ainda sem títulos ou créditos. São mais experimentos tecnológicos do que invenções narrativas. E, diferentemente do primeiro cinema, há os filmes gerados pela própria máquina, sem referência externa, computadorizando imagens. Dos exemplos mais recentes, temos experimentos com a estética de games ou
experimentos com o balanço espacial das visualizações científicas que temporalizam as dimensões internas e externas de micro e macro objetos. No primeiro caso, a imagem não é o mais importante, pois o que se busca é a interação entre a máquina e o jogador no sentido do toque participativo, do gesto do jogo. Porém, Scalable City é uma experiência de game que inclui projeção em 4k e que nos remete a uma espécie de desconstrução temporalizada em movimento de um tipo de arquitetura como a de Frank Gehry. Scalable City, de Sheldon Brown, nos oferece em movimento, em tela bidimensional, a dimensão grandiosa de uma experiência arquitetônica. No segundo caso, pode-se prever o uso didático e impactante de galáxias distantes em planetários e visualizadores de imagens imaginárias. Talvez essa projeção seja mesmo apropriada para um tipo de brilho futurista, de sonhos científicos dos lugares distantes do olho humano. Um tipo de inconsciente ótico que, no lugar de ver as miniaturas e espaços conhecidos e não vistos, veria a
alucinação. No lugar da relação que Benjamin faz com um inconsciente da psicopatologia da vida cotidiana, uma relação com o inconsciente da interpretação dos sonhos.1

A propósito, no caso dos micro objetos, é sempre irônico pensar nos modelos de visualizações tentando alcançar o padrão da realidade, ou aquilo que se entende por realidade. Esse inconsciente ótico que Benjamin vê no cinema e na fotografia, que revela realidades antes não acessíveis, se expande em máquinas que penetram o corpo humano, construindo um imaginário corporal de ultra-sons que descrevem os interiores de espaços íntimos em nome da ciência e de uma realidade que se torna indiscutível. Ninguém parece se lembrar que toda imagem requer interpretação. Mesmo imagens que descrevem cientificamente o nosso corpo, são imagens mediadas pelas idéias que as envolvem. Seria bem interessante poder ver nossos predecessores rindo da nossa crença nas imagens que temos hoje de nós mesmos. No lugar de um Adão gigante de Michelangelo, ultra-sons dos nossos órgãos internos. Nessa mesma linha é que as visualizações do corpo humano, das nossas moléculas, das nossas células, são realizadas com os programas de computador tridimensionais. Tentar visualizar a célula entrando dentro dela pode resultar em uma imitação infantil, ávida de realismo emocional, resultando em um efeito demoníaco que persegue as imagens geradas pelos computadores: a comparação com a realidade. Assim como a metáfora usada por Benedict
Anderson, “o demônio das comparações”2 para falar de um contexto cultural em que as colônias estariam sempre fadadas a se compararem às metrópoles, esta tentativa desesperada de reproduzir continuamente a realidade é também a queda sem anteparo para o Kitsch. Muito já foi feito em termos de imaginação com o Kitsch que não é mais um elemento ingênuo de categoria inferior. Porém, a perda da ingenuidade torna o produto ainda mais ideologicamente comprometido com a demanda imediata de satisfação, sem reflexão sobre a imagem projetada e o meio que a projeta. Quanto mais próxima do real, maior a queda na imagem facilmente forjada que ambiciona inutilmente ser a realidade. E, com uma definição como a do 4K, tornam-se imagens escorregadias que não cabem nos nossos olhos, vazam para a boca, para o nariz se esparramando em nossas faces. Esse, aliás, tem sido um ponto escuso das altas e altíssimas definições: se o fundo é tão definido quanto a figura, o que se pode ver? Como trabalhar com o foco com uma projeção em
que os elementos estão em sua maioria em foco? Que espécie de método se deve empregar para obter que tipo de imagem?

Evidentemente esse sentimento irônico tem a ver com a realidade ainda desconhecida da nova imagem. Trata-se de uma tentativa de lidar com a instabilidade da nova tecnologia. Por exemplo, se a imagem que construímos de nós se refere à experiência que temos da nossa realidade, que tipo de seres somos nós na atualidade? Após a sessão de filmes, três agentes imobiliários foram à nossa casa fotografar o apartamento que alugamos para colocá-lo à venda. Dois homens e uma mulher, loiros californianos, sapatos de verniz, com suas peles queimadas de um bronze brilhante. Sempre pensei nas lentes azuis dos filmes hollywoodianos dos anos oitenta como uma artificialidade, até conhecer o céu azul do por do sol de Los Angeles. Aquelas peles de plástico já estão preparadas para a projeção 4k. Assim como os pisos de granito dos shoppings centers, os lustres de cristal dos lobbies dos hotéis, os prédios esculpidos em vidro das grandes cidades. Nossa imagem, juntamente com o reflexo dela em nós, se prepara para ser triplicada.

1 No conhecido ensaio, “A obra de arte na época de sua reprodutibilidade técnica”, Walter Benjamin associa o “inconsciente ótico” ao livro, Psicopatologia da vida quotidiana, escrito por Freud em 1901, um ano depois do seu mais conhecido livro A interpretação dos sonhos. Em cada um deles Freud descreve o inconsciente se manifestando de formas distintas. 2 O sociólogo Benedict Anderson, intelectual do pós-colonialismo, conta em The spectre of
comparisons que tentava aprender espanhol com a novela do escritor filipino José Rizal Noli me
Tangere (Não me toques) quando se deparou com um fenômeno descrito pelo autor chamado de
“demônio das comparações”1. Rizal descreve sua volta para Manila depois de longo tempo na Europa e observa que, ao olhar os jardins de sua terra natal, eles são “maquinalmente” obscurecidos, de forma assombrosa e inescapável, pelas imagens dos jardins da Europa, não permitindo nunca mais a proximidade de um olhar ingênuo. Tomado pelo “demônio das comparações”, ele sempre verá esses jardins de perto e de longe simultaneamente, como em um telescópio invertido, e esse espectro acompanhará todo o movimento das colônias em relação às metrópoles. Jane de Almeida é professora e pesquisadora no Departamento de Artes Visuais na Universidade da Califórnia em San Diego (UCSD) e da Pós-graduação em Educação, Arte e História da Cultura na Universidade Mackenzie. Upaya "mencereweti" ataupun marah marah seringkali tidak efektif dan kalaupun ada upaya berubah dari yang bersangkutan, biasanya hanya sebentar dan bersifat sementara. Tidak jarang pula kesalahan yang sepele dapat berubah menjadi pertengkaran yang hebat dalam keluarga.

Memaksakan "kehendak" agar mereka berperilaku seperti yang kita inginkan seringkali tidak efektif. Sama seperti memaksakan kepada mereka agar mau menggunakan "kacamata" yang sudah bertahun tahun cocok kita gunakan.

Pernahkan Anda menanyakan "perasaan" mereka terhadap kebiasaan buruk mereka ?  Apakah kebiasaan kebiasaan buruk buruk tersebut memang mereka inginkan ? Mengapa mereka masih mempertahankan kebiasaan kebiasaan buruk tersebut ?

Apabila jawabannya mereka juga membenci kebiasaan buruk tersebut, mereka ingin berubah tetapi mereka tidak "tahu" caranya dan mereka merasa tidak "berdaya" untuk keluar dari kebiasaan buruk tersebut, kemungkinan penyebabnya adalah "hambatan psikis" (mental blocking).

Seseorang yang memiliki "hambatan psikis" di dalam dirinya, seringkali merasa "terikat" atau "terkekang" oleh tali tali emosional yang sangat kuat, sehingga mereka sendiri sesungguhnya merasa frustasi dengan kebiasaan tersebut dan upaya berubah seringkali gagal atau tidak "bekerja" sama sekali.

Bukannya mereka yang tidak mau "berubah" melainkan mereka merasa "tidak berdaya" membebaskan diri dari tali tali emosional yang terbentuk akibat trauma masa lalu, pola asuh yang keliru ataupun sugesti negatif yang dipupuk terus menerus di masa lalu.

Jadi bukannya dengan menyalahkan mereka yang seringkali justru menjadi kontraproduktif, melainkan membantu mereka dengan ataupun tanpa bantuan profesional melepaskan diri dari "tali kekang" yang selama ini menghambat mereka untuk berubah.
