We cycled from Dungeness to Rye while we were on holiday in July. It was a perfect summer's day and there was no one around. We stopped for lunch on the beach with the sound of the military firing range in the background and then pushed on to Dungeness to visit Derek Jarman's garden and the power station.

We cycled round the back of the power station but the road stopped. Rather than going back we pushed the bike over the shingle scrubland (not trespassing) towards the service road. We must have looked a funny site to all the power station workers driving home that night on our electic blue tandem! Hear got some good recordings of the power station hum and the eerie quiet of Jarman's garden.

My 10 month old son kept pulling it off the book shelf and I picked it up one day and opened it. I saw a note from the Honorable and Wise Ricki-son, who had given me this book as a gift in 1998. Now 10 years later I decide to reread it. I noticed that I only made it halfway anyway so, might as well finish it.

I am fascinated at how the human body interacts with and is related so strongly to nature. In the 4th chapter Sagan describes in detail the vast spectrum of wave properties from the low frequency Radio waves to the ultra frequent Gamma rays. And that within this wide range is a small part that is the visible light that we can see. That alone is truly remarkable...that there is so much "light" that we cannot see. These waves moving through space in our solar system are filtered by our atmosphere (another separate, wonderful story). He also describes how stars emit light in relation to the amount of energy they put out. He goes on to say:

The other reason we see in visible light is because that's where the Sun puts out most of it's energy. A very hot star emits much of its light in the ultraviolet. A very cool star emits mostly in the infrared. But the Sun, in some respects an average star, puts out most of its energy in the visible. Indeed, to remarkable high precision, the human eye is most sensitiveat the exact frequency in the yellow part of the spectrum at which the Sun is brightest.

Our eyes are completely tuned to the Sun's light. I remember Steiner somewhere saying the "light creates the eye." (I just don't remember where I read that.)

Local music man Travis McElroy of Thick Syrup records has some big news: In October, Thick Syrup will release "Halloween Songs" by David and Jad Fair. Right on! Sounds like a great follow-up to the band's Monster Songs for Children that came out in 1998 on the Kill Rock Stars label.

From Travis:

"I'm very proud to put something out by the guys who helped shaped what i listen to today.

Jad Fair is a founding member of Half Japanese. He has recorded with Yo La Tengo, Daniel Johnston, Kramer, Monster Party, Jason Willett, Lumberob, Richard Hell, Strobe Talbot, The Tinklers, Naofumi Ishimaru, Mosquito, The Pastels, Teenage Fanclub, Phonocomb, DQE, John Zorn, God Is My Co-Pilot, The Tall Dwarfs, Thurston Moore, Eye, Moe Tucker, Eugene Chadbourne, Fred Frith, Mara Flynn, Kevin Blechdom, Terry Adams, The Work Dogs, Tom Ardolino, The Shapir O'Rama, R. Stevie Moore, Bill Wells, Tom Recchion, Isobel Campbell, Norman Blake, Steve Fisk, and David Fair.

Kurt Cobain had Half Japanese open for Nirvana on the group's 1993 tour. The band's history and influence are chronicled in the 1993 documentary Half Japanese: The Band That Would Be King."

Congrats to Thick Syrup--this is a pretty damn good get!!

Wired report on an interesting survey about the most sung-about body part in music. Interesting in c

Wired report on an interesting survey about the most sung-about body part in music. Interesting in concept but prosaic in terms of results - eyes come out on top overall (couldn't see that one coming, hoho), except for hip hop, which firmly favours the ass. Had internal body parts been in the mix, however, I have a strong feeling that heart would have come out on top. The interactive map feature is especially entertaining for hip hop.

A quick and highly scientific study of my own music collection reveals the following results including various organs, based on title only, rather than lyrics within the songs:

Heart - 71 songs

Highlights: 'May Your Heart Be The Map' by Epic45, 'It's My Own Cheating Heart That Makes Me Cry' by Glasvegas, 'Be Quiet, Mt. Heart Attack!' by Liars.

Head - 65

Highlights: 'Big Furry Head' - Amon Tobin, 'Your Pretty Little Head' - The Paperchase, 'The Man Whose Head Expanded' - The Fall

Eye - 59

Highlights:'Sad Eyes' - Bat For Lashes, 'TV Eye' - The Stooges, 'Evil Eye' - Pussy Galore.

Hand - 56

Highlights: 'Heart in the Hand of the Matter' (see also heart above) - ...Trail of Dead, 'Terminator X Speaks With His Hands' - Public Enemy, 'Jesus' Hands' - AMC

Neck - 10

Highlights: 'Protect Ya Neck' - Wu Tang Clan, 'Never Enough Necks' parts one and two - The Fucking Champs.

Leg - 8

Highlights: 'Unfold the Leg' - Lungfish, 'Nun's Leg' - Shit and Shine, 'Spread Yr Leggs, Release The Batss' by Die Monitr Batss.

Stomach - just the two

Highlights: 'Stomach Worm' by Stereolab, by default.

And I almost got to the end without saying 'conclusive proof that the heart rules over the head'. DAMN.

For the first time since college let out I have something to actually write about! Today I hit Crossett with my first stop being at Abiding Faith Christian School, my Alma Mater. Wow, I sound old! I refuse to ever again say I have an Alma Mater! Anyway I had a blast seeing all my friends over at AFCS for lunch. The school seemed to be in great shape even without my class to take care of it :P I wish I could have gotten pictures of me and the group hanging out though. Like Taylor's horrific aim while attempting to throw grapes into mouths (How do you hit someone's leg from four feet away?) or Megan's signature confused look or Whitney's classic eye roll when we all are acting insane or Wes' face when the subject of macaroni came up. Unfortunately all I got was a lame picture of the sign out in front of the school.

And here is my card.

Used some of my all-time favorite product lines for this vintage inspired card. The Pink Deco paper on the background came from My Mind's Eye new "Just Dreamy 2" collection released at CHA. The nice folks there gave me this paper for stopping by the booth, and I have been very excited to get home and put it to good use. I paired it with some older My Mind's Eye tags and a calendar strip from their "29th Street Market" collection, which has got to be my most favorite release ever. I also hand-cut some flocked flowers from another favorite of mine, Making Memories' "Chelsea Place", and of course added a cut out butterfly from the new Webster's Pages paper. A chipboard coaster from Imagination Project, a bit of ribbon, and some machine stitching complete the card. Notice the use of my favorite colors again......pink and brown. ;)

See, Kathie?? I really do like pink! I really do!

Have a great day everyone!

I'll be out of town this weekend and I have mixed feelings about it. I won't see Daniel for 3 days and that makes me quite sad. But I want to go out and have fun. Blah.

Spoke with him early this morning, texted him a few times, got one text in return and so far nothing else.

Wednesday I'm supposed to go out to dinner with Andrew on Wednesday. As friends. We'll see.

I'm going to try to sleep. Try.

Women who wear make-up should carry out a routine of cleansing.

CLEANSING

Women who wear make-up should carry out a routine of cleansing, toning and moisturing each evening, as well as washing the face in the morning. Cleansing will remove old make-up and the grime and grease that have been accumulated during the day.

Remove mascara with a cotton bud dipped in eye-dipped in eye-cleansing lotion. To make the job easier keep your hair off your face.
Remove the eyeshadow by gently wiping it off with a pad of clean cotton wool moistened with eye-cleansing lotion.
Pour a little face cleansing cream into the palm of one hand and dab it generously over the nose, chin, forehead and cheeks---using two fingers of the other hand.
Massage the cream into the skin, starting under the throat, using a gentle upward motion.
Continue massaging the cream up to the forehead, using the fingertips.
Gently massage the cream from the eyes to the nose.
Massage cream back over the chin, which is particularly prone to blackheads. Use the index finger.
Remove the cream from the face with tissue pads in each hand. Start under the chin and work over the cheeks and on to the forehead
TONING

Toners remove all traces of dirt, make-up or cleanser that remain after cleansing.

Immediately after cleansing apply toner to the forehead and cheeks on a pad of corron wool
Apply the toner to the crevices around the nose.
Apply the toner to the crevices around the chin.
MOISTURIZING

Without moisture, the skin will not remain smooth and supple. The face is exposed to the drying effect of the weather, so moisturisers -- which form a film over the skin -- contain and augment the natural moisture.

It's taking me a good bit of time to settle into my office this morning. Even though summer classes are *finally* over and my grades are mostly done, I'm still buried under a big ass pile of administrative crap. I'm determined to use my big shovel and get a chunk done today, but really, here it is, my last day of freedom, and I'm stuck in my office, looking out the window at the horrible construction project behind my building.

Poor me.

Of course, I can't complain too much. The Coach and I went out for Indian food yesterday, then watched movie at two different MegoPlex Theatres. Yes, I will admit that we went to see The House Bunny, which was cute in a Happy Madison Productions kind of way. It certainly wasn't high cinema, but it did make me laugh my ass off -- so fuck the critics. As for the art house movie, I thought Harry Poole is Here was actually kind of sweet. But then, I loves me some Luke Wilson and I really enjoy watching quirky films.

I also picked up my new glasses. Damn, but those sunglasses are heavy because my lenses are big and fat and weighty. They do the job though -- nothing is getting into my eye with those on! I even drove my car with the top down for the first time in weeks. Yippee! My new inside classes are pretty darned cute in a muted cat's eye kinda' way.

One final story and then I will have to actually get to work. On Friday, I made a girl cry. I should probably wear this like a badge of honor. Or maybe I should just buy a box of Kleenex for my office. All I did was tell her that she was smart, but her grades don't reflect it because she doesn't come to class or turn crap in. Getting the highest grade on the final exam isn't going to save her. I was nice. I didn't give her the speech that I would give my own (hypothetical) child which would have been along the lines of "stop wasting your fucking life!" -- and she still cried.

Oh dear.

I should probably grade her makeup exam to see if she actually flunked the class, but I'm going to wait and do it on Monday. I'm mean that way. She needs to panic a bit. It might actually do her some good. Either that, or the girl needs to go to the counseling center (and yes, I did recommend that) for a nice cuppa and a prescription for Prozac.

It began when they come took me from my home
And put me in Dead Row,
Of which I am nearly wholly innocent, you know.
And I'll say it again
I..am..not..afraid..to..die.

I began to warm and chill
To objects and their fields,
A ragged cup, a twisted mop
The face of Jesus in my soup
Those sinister dinner meals
The meal trolley's wicked wheels
A hooked bone rising from my food
All things either good or ungood.

And the mercy seat is waiting
And I think my head is burning
And in a way I'm yearning
To be done with all this measuring of truth.
An eye for an eye
A tooth for a tooth
And anyway I told the truth
And I'm not afraid to die.

Interpret signs and catalogue
A blackened tooth, a scarlet fog.
The walls are bad. Black. Bottom kind.
They are sick breath at my hind
They are sick breath at my hind
They are sick breath at my hind
They are sick breath gathering at my hind

I hear stories from the chamber
How Christ was born into a manger
And like some ragged stranger
Died upon the cross
And might I say it seems so fitting in its way
He was a carpenter by trade
Or at least that's what I'm told

Like my good hand I
tatooed E.V.I.L. across it's brother's fist
That filthy five! They did nothing to challenge or resist.

In Heaven His throne is made of gold
The ark of his Testament is stowed
A throne from which I'm told
All history does unfold.
Down here it's made of wood and wire
And my body is on fire
And God is never far away.

Into the mercy seat I climb
My head is shaved, my head is wired
And like a moth that tries
To enter the bright eye
I go shuffling out of life
Just to hide in death awhile
And anyway I never lied.

My kill-hand is called E.V.I.L.
Wears a wedding band that's G.O.O.D.
`Tis a long-suffering shackle
Collaring all that rebel blood.

And the mercy seat is waiting
And I think my head is burning
And in a way I'm yearning
To be done with all this measuring of truth.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth
And anyway I told the truth
And I'm not afraid to die.

And the mercy seat is burning
And I think my head is glowing
And in a way I'm hoping
To be done with all this weighing up of truth.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth
And I've got nothing left to lose
And I'm not afraid to die.

And the mercy seat is glowing
And I think my head is smoking
And in a way I'm hoping
To be done with all this looks of disbelief.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth
And anyway there was no proof
Nor a motive why.

And the mercy seat is smoking
And I think my head is melting
And in a way I'm helping
To be done with all this twisted of the truth.
A lie for a lie
And a truth for a truth
And I've got nothing left to lose
And I'm not afraid to die.

And the mercy seat is melting
And I think my blood is boiling
And in a way I'm spoiling
All the fun with all this truth and consequence.
An eye for an eye
And a truth for a truth
And anyway I told the truth
And I'm not afraid to die.

And the mercy seat is waiting
And I think my head is burning
And in a way I'm yearning
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
A life for a life
And a truth for a truth
And anyway there was no proof
But I'm not afraid to tell a lie.

And the mercy seat is waiting
And I think my head is burning
And in a way I'm yearning
To be done with all this measuring of truth.
An eye for an eye
And a truth for a truth
And anyway I told the truth
But I'm afraid I told a lie.

Richard Fortey loves fossils. In Trilobite! he waxes poetic about the trilobite's stone eyes.

Trilobite eyes are made of calcite. This makes them unique in the animal kingdom.

Calcite is one of the most abundant minerals. The white cliffs of Dover are calcite... Limestones (which are calcite) have been used to build... the sublime crescents of Bath, the pyramids of Gizeh, the amphitheatres and Corinthian columns of classical times. Polished slabs composed of calcite deck the doors of Renaissance churches in Italy, still grace the interiors of Hyatt–Regency hotels, or conference halls, or wherever architects wish to suggest the dignity that only real rock seems to confer.

The purest forms of calcite are transparent. In building stones and decorative slabs it is the impurities and fine crystal masses that provide the colour and design... The dark red of the scaglio rosso so typical of Italian church doors is a deep stain of ferric iron. But when a calcite crystal grows more slowly in nature, then it may acquire its perfect crystal form, and be glassy clear...

Look into a crystal of Iceland spar and you can see the secret of the trilobite’s vision. For trilobites used clear calcite crystals to make lenses in their eyes; in this they were unique. Other arthropods have mostly developed ‘soft’ eyes, the lenses made of cuticle similar to that constructing the rest of the body.

The science of the eye demands a little explanation. It all depends on the optical properties of calcite... If you break a large piece of crystalline calcite it will fracture in a fashion related to its fine atomic structure... You are left with a regular, six-sided chunk of the mineral in your hand, termed a rhomb... The clear calcite of this not-quite-a-cube treats light in a peculiar way. If a beam of light is shone at the sides of the rhomb it splits in two; this is known as double refraction. The rays of light so produced are the ‘ordinary’ and the ‘extraordinary’ rays: their course is determined, just like the shape of the rhomb, by the stacking of the individual atoms. There is a huge specimen of Iceland spar on the first floor of London’s Natural History Museum through which you may peer to see two images of a Maltese cross, one generated by the extraordinary, and the other by the ordinary rays. But there is one direction, and one direction only, in which light is not subjected to this optical splitting... from this direction it does not split into two rays at all but passes straight through.

...

If to travel back to the time of the trilobite is a historical sea-change then there can be nothing stranger than the calcareous eyes of the trilobite. And pearls are chemically the same as the trilobite’s unblinking lenses, being yet another manifestation of calcium carbonate, although pearls are exquisite reflectors of light rather than transmitters of it... The trilobite saw the submarine world with eyes tessellated into a mosaic of calcified lenses... his stony eyes read the world through the medium of the living rock.

Well, it rained pretty much all night. Fortunately, there was no lightening or thunder...just the steady rainfall. It was the kind that makes the soothing sound that eases you gently into sleep. Before it started storming, I took these pictures so that I would be able to compare the water levels afterward. This is a pond that is across the street from my house:

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="240" caption="Water Level Before the Arrival of Fay"][/caption]
[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="240" caption="A Close-Up of the Water Line Before Fay Arrived"][/caption]

When I woke up this morning, the rain had stopped, but that's only because we were in the eye of the storm. Here's what it looked like:

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="240" caption="In the Eye of the Storm"][/caption]
[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="240" caption="Is the Water Higher? In the Eye of the Storm"][/caption]
[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="240" caption="The Water Level Halfway through the Storm"][/caption]

The other side of the storm is headed our way, so the water levels will probably rise even more. The ground is saturated. When I walked across it, I sank as if I was walking on a sponge. Parts of my town were built on the bay, so you can only imagine how rain affects us.

I have been knitting more dishcloths, though. Rainy days are good for that. I'll post photos of my newest creations on Monday, after the Olympics are over. I will say that my cotton stash is almost gone. Yippee! Stay tuned!
