this is my first real article so I hope I get things right...

This article is about a "Problem" I recently encountered while using XPath expressions in Dom4j and XMLSpy. The main objective was to select certain nodes in an XML File. Just to give you a better understanding of what I wanted to select, here the related snippet of the XML File:

I wanted to select the red colored elements via XPath expressions. So I tried to select the first Element with the expression "//American". In XMLSpy and everything worked just fine. Therefore I took my java code and tried to run the same XPath expression with Dom4j (see code below):

That didn't work so well and I ended up with an empty result set. After hours I finally came up with a solution to this problem (even though I am not quite sure that the explanation why the problem occurred with Dom4j and not with XMLSpy is accurate or not.....so it's just a guess ).

I figured out that the elements I tried to select don't belong to any namespace (in fact they do, they belong to the standard namespace of the XML file, if defined). The elements which I wanted to select existed one level below the actual root element of the XML file.

My guess is that XMLSpy figures out the namespaces of given document on its own and therefore can select elements based on an expression like "//American". Dom4j on the other hand doesn't figure out namespaces on its own an therefore is incapable of correctly evaluating the expression. That is why I ended up with an empty result set on my first try.

What I did is I took the namespace (see red marked part in the XML file below) which all elements belong to if they have no prefix assigned to them and made it known to Dom4j:

Also, consider eyeballs and the shines: Once you have the basic eye outline, take eraser and slightly make a rounded line inside of the eyeball. Now, your eyes really look realistic."

In this article I'll explain how to make your guitar squeal with Pinch Harmonics. A lot of guitarists have trouble learning how to do these, but it's really a simple technique.

I'm going to touch on all types of harmonics in an effort to explain how Pinch Harmonics work when your playing the guitar.

If your like me you like to add a little expression when playing your guitar, by adding some harmonics and pinch harmonics.

To get this started we're going to go into a little detail about how the guitar strings actually work. Now I'm not going to be all technical, as that's not who I am :o)

Basically the guitar string vibrates between the nut and the bridge. If you look closely you can see the string vibrating like a sine wave.

Natural harmonics happen at the spaces along the string where the "wave" stops and starts a new one. (Not technically correct but makes sense to me this way).

This normally happens just above the 5th fret, the 7th fret, and the 12th fret wires. If you take a minute in a well lit room you can see the spots where the vibration along the string actually seems to be stopped. When you lightly touch a ringing string on these points you will get a natural harmonic chime.

Tap harmonics are simply fretting a string and moving the natural harmonic spot up accordingly. For example: If you fret the Low E String at the 3rd fret and pluck the string, your "natural harmonics" would no longer be at the 5th, 7th, and 12th frets. You would Tap the string above the 8th, 10th, and 15th fret wire to sound the harmonic. Hence the name....Tap Harmonic.

Now..to the meat of this...the all powerful Pinch Harmonic!! I say all powerful just because I love the extra expression and sound you can get from them.

To do a Pinch Harmonic you basically "Pinch" the string between your Pick and the side of your thumb that's holding the pick. This is the way I do them and have had excellent luck with this technique.

When you strike the string you let your thumb sound the harmonic you want. It takes a bit of trial and error to find the right areas above the pickups that sound the harmonics you want, but only a little.

The best way to learn the placement is to crank up your distortion (easier to sound them), and on put your fret hand on the Low E or A String on the 5th or 7th fret as if you were playing A note or D note.

Start with your pick in about the middle of the Neck and Bridge pickups and "Pinch" the string so that when your pick sounds it your thumb immediately touches the string. This should sound a Pinch Harmonic. The motion is similar to turning the ignition in a car, just not as drastic...it's a slight "Turn" or "Pinch" on the string.

You may have to move your hand slightly higher or lower on the string to find the "sweet spots". Keep trying different areas until you get it just right.

Once you've found the spots that give the sounds you want, make a mental note of where they are. When you move your fret hand higher or lower on the neck...the places you can hit the harmonics will move slightly. This falls in line with the way a Tap Harmonic works, so keep that in mind.

Keep practicing finding the "Sweet Spot" until you can do it each time you try. This part does take a little time and practice.

Just as a note: When you change to a different guitar, be prepared to relearn where the Pinch Harmonics sound. Every guitar I've played on has them in slightly different places. Differences in neck length, bridge placement, manufacturing tolerances all come into play.

So, that's all there is to it...Keep practicing till you get the feel for it, try adding bends and sound another one, you'll make that guitar scream like a wounded banshee in no time.

If you want to really increase your skill with Pinch harmonics after you get the feel for them, try practicing them with a clean sound. They can still be sounded and your accuracy will increase exponentially!

Considering my personal history, I find it curious that what has been most affecting in my life has not been the actions but the words that accompanied them. This has been a recurring pattern ever since I first learned to articulate a thought in words. Often I have wished it were a skill I'd never developed. Or at least, seeing as I had, then one I'd learned better. The sublime state of bodily sensation and wordless thought must be a happy, if a lonely, one.

'Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me' I chanted, aged six, in defiance of a stone-and-insult-hurling classmate who decided he had a grievance against me. (I'd not kiss him, he'd threatened this course of action if I wouldn't, and he was, to my misfortune, a lad of his word.) The sting of sharp gravel against the back of my bare legs had receded by the time I got home, but what held the incident sharp in my mind - and still does, decades later - is not his handfuls of gravel, but the words which went with it. And how absurdly misguided my incantation was.

The body is an extraordinarily resilient thing, our minds less so. I'm often amazed, watching small children playing, and the physical risks they take, that we ever make it into adulthood intact. In fact few of us do, internally at least: the unselfconscious, free, naturally-upright posture we have as toddlers is buffeted over the years and we reach majority with our self-image as crookbacked and fragile as any battlefield vet: ticks, stiffness, aches, dodgy shoulders, slipped discs... Our posture and expression is as often a result of emotional stresses and tensions as much as any physical distress: an outward indication of the impression we hold of ourselves, shaped by how we are treated, and the words that are said. Keeping one's countenance is an admirable thing. Learning to shrug off others' harsh words goes one better. I respect both in he who can. I am myself, it seems, capable of neither, instead constantly engaged in absurd contortions, according to perceived whim or expectation (and most likely, perceived wrongly), like Eliot's chap, put-upon by his Lady,

My parents, two individuals whose bond with each other is as close as any I've observed, have spent an exorbitant amount of time over the years simply talking. 'Hello darling, how was your day?' It was the pattern of our family life. Coming home of an evening, they'd fix a drink, sit down, and then chatter on until bed called (and, I daresay, continuing even then). In fifty-odd years it seems they've never run out of things to say. There's a potency in words and we tend to forget those which confirm our happinesses and concentrate on those which don't. I wrote before of being fascinated by the S word, three letters which tantalised me for as long as I can recall. In adulthood the elusive L word took its place, though this seemed, for me, to hold more danger. My experience of either is far more complex than three or four innocent little characters might suggest; though neatly defined in the OED, my understanding of them, or perhaps, I would better say, misunderstanding, is a matter altogether different. The fact remains that our words don't equate to the thing itself and that divide is an enormous gulf.

When my father suffered a stroke earlier this year, it was both highly distressing and, despite myself, fascinating, to watch a mind in the process of short-circuiting. I realized something was up, though without understanding quite what, when suddenly his words stopped making sense. He continued to talk, and in proper sentences, but his words related to something else. He went on speaking as though on auto-pilot, with a strange fixed smile. It was precisely like a computer crashing. During the wait for the ambulance, while we tried to calm him, and gather together his things for a hospital stay, he continued to instruct – bewildered, frightened, clearly realizing his words weren't making sense – in an attempt to regain control of the situation. It was a hard thing to see in this man, an academic who, being a shy, non-athletic and unconfident child, had early learned to use words as his guide, his crutch and his stick, to negotiate his way in the world. As I do now. The disintegration of his language distressed him, and me to see it, in a way another physical failure might not.

Once uttered, they are impossible to withdraw. I remain frustrated over my inability to express myself better, to be unable, despite a surfeit of words. But taciturnity, not invariably the wiser option, I find impossible – I'm as addicted to words as a crackhead to his tubepipe. But it is also the best means I have at my disposal, though a flawed one, of defining my world.

Ever been looking for something but can't put your finger on it? That's how I've been feeling for the last several days in regards what I want my blog to be like. Over the last four months, I have been trying to turn Syntaxi into something that would give me an outlet for my writings on films, music, books, and entertainment items in general. The frustrating thing has been realizing that I am not that interested in writing traditional reviews. In fact the posts I've liked the most are the ones I have not really planned. So that was surprise since I started Syntaxi as a place to get me out of the thing I call the Amazon review loop. Like a lot of people when I come across something I like I want to share it. And my blog was supposed to let me do that.

A further wrinkle in my dilemma was discovering that there are elements to writing a blog which are different from just posting a 300 word review to a commerce site. Who am I writing to? The person looking for something new or someone who already knows about the item in question? I live in a college town in central PA where most folks are not familiar with the items and personalities that rock my little world. I have been digging into things off the radar, tributaries off the mainstream, since 1988.That's twenty years folks. SO trying to play catch up with me is not easy even if I give you a leg up. And to be honest, I don't have the drive that I had when I was twentysomething to help the “un-clued” get to where I am. Not that I don't want that but I am 50% too lazy and 50% too busy to take that task on. I have to “fess” up to this fact. So what's my angle here? I certainly want to express the elation that my favorite things give me but how can I do that without coming off like a tastemaker?

And then there is another side to my blogging life. The time it takes to do this. I need to streamline this process. The workflow has been real sluggish after that initial giddiness that you get when you realize “Hey I am actually doing this”! Several of posts have been driven by this need just to keep it going. Some good, some just sorta there but the self imposed deadline has been a real driver. I finally broke down, got firefox 3.0 and some blogging tools to speed up the whole thing. Granted I need to realize what these new tools can do for me but I am on my way. It's going to take time but it is pointing me in certain directions.

When you add all this up, it points towards a change. An element that I have noticed from all that I've done so far is that I need take into account how I view the internet. Posts like this one will turn off a lot of casual browsers. Reading on the computer is different from reading from the printed page and I need to pay attention to this. Not to that it is going to stop me from expressing what I need to. Still after I do this groundwork posts have to be more streamlined. I am not going to become a booster of the ADD society we are turning into. I want for what I do to have content not be soundbites or web blips that pass away into blink and you missed it entertainment. I am still a bit of idealist. I still believe if you are for real that people will take the time.

So let's review. Less amateur criticism more impressions. A stronger focus which allows for a more casual approach. A better sense of the tendencies of the internet. A framework which allow me to post more without taxing my schedule.
