A few friends said that I should be OK at the run as the atmosphere of everyone else running will spur me on but with so many women walking there didn't seem to be any spurring going on. I will continue to run (at home on the streets of Upminster) and would like to have another go at a 5K race, but next time I will make sure it is a mixed race (I can't see many men walking 5K) and maybe on the streets of London (or some other town), so the course might be wide enough to let everyone run or walk in a more comfortable environment. Now I'm going to drown my sorrows for not running it all by having a drink or two. At least I got an ice-cream at the end of it, thanks to my parents!

Today the Warped Tour kicks off it's summer tour bringing many punk rock people on having a great time on seeing their favourite band performing and have an awesome great time at the mosh pit. For those who live in "border cities" in Canada, they have to be aware of what they can bring back after spending less than 24 hours down in the states. In this case, let's start off with Windsor, Ontario - the border city of Detroit, Michigan.

Detroit can be accessible by car via the Ambassador Bridge (one of the busiest border crossings for cars and trucks) and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel (also one of the congested crossings). Recently, a new border crossing has been announced and an extension of the 401 is in the works - there are two proposals: the Greenlink proposal drafted by Windsor City Council and the Windsor-Essex Parkway, drafted by the Detroit River International Crossing study team (DRIC). These projects are designed to divert truck traffic off local streets.

Anyways, back to my topic. The Detroit leg of the Warped Tour is going to be held on July 18th, 2008 at Comerica Park. Many punk rock fans are trying to find rides on going to the Warped Tour over the international border (and as always, bring proof of citizenship along). A fan from the Warped Tour message board states that Detroit's transit system isn't reliable and user-friendly except the people mover that loops around the downtown core. To ride the people mover it costs 50 cents (American). The nearest people mover stop serving Comerica Park is "Grand Circus".

Many people in Windsor are still finding a way on how to get to Comerica Park, but they didn't realize that there's one (and only) way on get to Detroit - by public transit. Transit Windsor operates a service called the "Tunnel Bus" and it departs from the Windsor International Transit Terminal and includes an immediate stop outside Casino Windsor (now known as Caesars Windsor casino).

On regular days, the Tunnel Bus serves downtown Detroit, Cobo Center/Arena, Joe Louis Arena, Campus Martius Park and Hart Plaza. On special events, the Tunnel Bus serves Comerica Park or Ford Field. In the case of the Warped Tour, Transit Windsor should (and must) serve this stop, although there's no word if Transit Windsor will ever serve Comerica Park during the Warped Tour. If anyone know wants to know how much is to ride the Tunnel Bus, it's $3.75 cash fare (for regular services including Joe Louis & Cobo Center/Hall) or a set of 4 tickets will set you back for $15.00. Onwards, let's say a concert fan from Windsor visits the Warped Tour stop in Detroit and wants to buy something like a t-shirt or a CD. He/she purchases it and something should be issued - a receipt. A receipt is a vital piece of information if you are shopping down in the United States and you must declare everything as you return to Canada. If you fail to declare everything, the border officials in Canada will confiscate your items and you will have to pay a penalty to get them back. So people who live in the Windsor area and heading to the Detroit stop of the Warped, be prepared to face anything. Expect the unexpected.

After 5 years of war in Iraq and 6 years of war in Afghanistan Britain’s anti-war movement had shrunk to only 3000 protestors wanting to welcome the infamous international terrorist George W. Bush who was having tea with Gordon Brown in Downing Street 500 yards further. Before leaving office George W. Bush jr. took the opportunity to applaud Gordon Brown and the New Labour government on being ‘tough on terror’.

Anti-war protestors quickly realised that being tough on terror implied a violation of civil liberties as marching down Whitehall was impossible as police had built up security barriers and banned the march to take the route past Downing Street. The clashes between the Metropolitan police blockading the road into Whitehall and peaceful anti-war protestors displayed in how far the United States has interfered with civil liberties in Great Britain as well as around the world. George W. Bush’s Operation Enduring Freedom has ended freedom.

Extensive police brutality got 25 protestors arrested, and three people charged with offences - amongst them a 60-year old woman who was charged with indecent exposure. Essex student Pete Simpson said: “Police were hitting our hands with their truncheons. They were standing over us like bullies with their weapons. I was hit on my arm, shoulder and head. Blood was streaming down my face.”

In an open letter to Sir Ian Blair of the Metropolitan Police George Galloway MP compares the police brutality of Sunday to the crackdown on the miners’ strike of ‘84-‘85. “Batons were drawn at least prematurely and were used with a level of aggression which frankly took my breath away.” Before protestors knew it riot police was deployed even though there was not a riot going on. This provocation by the Metropolitan Police put the anti-war protestors into a situation known to dictatorships that Bush and New Labour supposedly have been fighting so hard against. In direct confrontation with a police force of roughly 1500 the protest dissolved as the police was snatching protestors seemingly at random. Galloway: “The squad proceeded to deal out a shocking level of violence against unarmed civilian protestors, overwhelmingly young and many of them female.”

Britain's got talent?

A busking drummer called Graeme "Bongo"  Conway has been given three Xs from the noise abatement judges at Newcastle City Council and has had his drums seized by police.

The busker, who was ordered to quit Newcastle city centre after tormenting residents and shopkeepers with his relentless rhythms, defied an order imposed by council officials.

Ed Foster, of Newcastle City Council's Night Watch team, said: "I can't pass comment on his skills as a musician, but a large part of the problem and the reason for the complaints was he was not going to the proper areas the council provides for buskers... he was playing outside people's homes for clubbers coming out of The Gate at two in the morning and some residents were at their wits' end."

Britain's Got More Talent

Essex County Council may offer a position to the runner-up on BBC reality tv show The Apprentice.  It's certainly an innovative way of recruiting.

Meanwhile the host of the American edition of The Apprentice, Donald Trump is also dealing with British local government this week.  He's still trying to get planning permission from Aberdeenshire CC for his super-duper golf course.

It's the 50th Anniversary of the introduction of the British Parking Meter.   Hurray!
