After getting my first 12 inch record from my grandparents, I started buying them on a regular basis

After getting my first 12 inch record from my grandparents, I started buying them on a regular basis with my pocket money. Then Pete Tong started his Friday night show on Radio 1 back in 1993, this started a music institution for finding out the latest dance tunes. I would still continue the time honour tradition of taping radio shows by taping the 'Essential Mix' on a Friday night and I still have some of these tapes at home. The earlier records that I brought were quite techno rave like Joey Beltram and records from the happy acid house era. Smiley faces and whistles! The Prodigy had just released Charly and Everybody in the Place which was a real jump up and down record and I have fond memories of dancing to this at a nightclub in Southend. This was my first taste of clubbing but stories of clubbing will have to wait for another time. After a while dance music moved direction into house music, with the likes of Rhythm on the Loose (Break of Dawn), De'Lacy (Hideaway) and Robert Owens (I'll Be Your Friend). I could go on and on with a list of my favourite house records of the early 90s but fear I would bored everyone. With over 300 12in vinyl records the list could go on forever.

Dance music will always be my first love for music but during the 90s there was also the "Britpop" scene. So I also got into music from Happy Mondays, Blur and Oasis. I actually went to see Blur at the Kilburn Ballroom before their huge second album. So I spent most of the nineties listening to Britpop in the car and dancing away at home or in clubs to house music. By the end of the nineties dance music had changed a lot too - The Prodigy was using more 'real' instruments in their records and it was so much more commercial. Madonna was making dance records! Dance music was all over the charts, on the radio and used in commercials. There seems to be a lot of remixes of the golden oldie dance records being released now - which makes me think that no one can create new dance music. Or has the dance scene just changed direction and as I don't go clubbing anymore (I can just about keep awake to midnight nowadays) I haven't realised. Since 2000 my music tastes have changed even more - is this another sign of getting older...

We began this habit early this March, after what felt like a long cold imprisonment inside. We kept a close eye on the bare branches and iced-over pond, looking for the first stirrings of thaw and then spring.

One day in April we saw a narrow white question mark across the water—the distinctive silhouette of a heron. Last year I had seen both white herons and a great blue heron, but this year, it seemed the pond played host only to white ones. There were three of these solitary hunters standing out against the far dark shore. The turtles came out to sun themselves on the log. We could see up to ten turtles of all sizes, and ages, lined on the log in the far corner of the pond. Red-wing blackbirds flew overhead. We once saw an oriole.

Cara reported our daily heron and turtle count to one of our coworkers, who is native to Essex. "There are no herons around here, they must be egrets!" she told us. Cara grew up in southern New Hampshire and I grew up in Virginia. We hurriedly corrected ourselves, sure that we just weren't local enough to know. A few weeks later I got into a conversation with a man on my street who is a birder. He said that he sees herons all over the place. Although he is originally from Maine, he has lived in Beverly for forty years. Who are we to believe?

The point isn't necessarily whether we are seeing herons or egrets (although, one of these days, I'd like to settle the issue for sure). We are becoming daily observers of our habitat. In my hometown, the place where I feel the most local, the streets are not just familiar, each one has a story or an association attached to it. I know the names of the wildflowers and which direction the river flows. When someone asks me for directions, I am sometimes too full of knowledge, associations, and history to give them coherently (not to mention that I'm apt to tell them to turn left at a building that isn't even there anymore).

Learning the names of the birds and plants around us is one way to live deeply in a place, to start the process of becoming local. And the more deeply we live in a place, the more we understand the impact of our decisions. When I leave the lights on at my house, I am using more coal from Tabaco, Colombia, to fire up the power plant across the river. When I buy books, I am supporting the economic and cultural vitality of Salem.

Create your own understanding of where you live. Learn how your town, area, region is different than other towns, areas, and regions. Learn the names of the birds that you see. Shop at your local stores and cook food you bought at the farmstand or picked or grew yourself. Maybe someday when our coworker asks us what we saw when we walked around the pond, Cara and I will be too full of details we have observed, the pattern of the seasons we spent walking around the pond, to give her a clear answer.

At Quality 1st Basement Systems our work speaks for itself, we install great products with great results. Though some things are out of our hands, such as hot water heaters. This tanks hold a LOT of water and when they go bad they can really drop a ton of water in your basement. Yes, this water will still naturally flow to the sump since it is in the lowest spot of the basement but that mean be on the opposite side as the hot water heater. I know i wouldn't want that water running across my basement floor, what we can do to stop this is one simple product. The FloodRing will make this disaster much much less painful, in fact there will be no water on your floor at all. With our FloodRing in place any of the water that spills out of your hot water tank will be kept inside the FloodRing and then drained directly into your perimeter drainage systems where the sump pump will take it right out. This simple product will save you a large headache when your hot water heater decides to go. If you would like your Free basement waterproofing estimate in New Jersey just give us a call at 1800-290-2930.

After two days of studying and late nights with early mornings I’m not sure what this post is

After two days of studying and late nights with early mornings I'm not sure what this post is going to be about - just silly ramblings most probably. My creative juices have stopped maybe due to lack of sleep and too much booze, so I thought the best way to write something without actually thinking was to write a 'diary' day. Awake this morning at around 7.30am as my husband was working again this weekend - managed to get out of bed at 8am and get ready for a run. Left the house at 8.30am for a 20 minutes run around the streets of Upminster which is always a lovely time of day for a run as it is so quiet with only dog walkers and other runners about. Also, first thing this morning it was glorious sunshine unlike the rest of the day which has been cloudy. Showered, dressed, had toast and a cup of black Earl Grey by 10.15am. Popped around my parents so I could use their printer, had a quick catch-up with them and brought home a few photos of my family from years ago for my 'family photo wall'. Got back home and started studying - well almost started straight away as I had managed to do something with my laptop screen and spent 30 minutes trying to get it back to normal.

The rest of the day was spent studying, eating lunch, listening to Glastonbury on Radio 1, putting laundry on and hanging it out, putting the dishwasher on, watching Amy Winehouse at Glastonbury on the BBC website, uploading a new profile picture on Facebook and Twitter. Right now I'm writing this while Neil Diamond is on the TV (at Glastonbury of course!) and I'm eating Green & Black's Dark Chocolate. I'm also contemplating getting the cocktails shaker out and making a cosmo or maybe a Pimms and lemonade just to top the day off. Not a very exciting day but at least there was good music to watch and listen to this weekend.

I wrote this piece for a pamphlet in April of 2008. It still bears relevance as the national demo

I wrote this piece for a pamphlet in April of 2008. It still bears relevance as the national demonstration against the BNP took place one week ago from today. I am writing another piece on neo-fascism that will appear shortly.

We've done a lot of work throughout the last few weeks. We've leafleted houses, spoke to people on a one-to-one basis, and held a rally one hundred strong. All in all, people and the press will be forcing us to meassure our success by how many votes the BNP gets in the Highwoods Ward - whether they are elected or not.

This, is simply wrong. Our actions stand in the tradition of those who travelled to Spain to fight in the Civil War, those people who stood up against the Apertheid Regime in South Africa and all those people who stood up to sexism, fascism, racism in their schools and workplace on a daily basis.

Anti-fascist action is not the end all solution. In the fight against fascism we also have to fight against Capitalism. Fascism cannot be regarded as a phenomenon in isolation. The link should be obvious but it isn't so to many people. For this reason I will stress the correlation of capitalism, racism and fascism in brief.

Slumps in the economy as well as crises such as we find ourselves in mean that capitalism is in danger. Thus, wages drop, prices rise and so forth. Most people know what happened to Germany in the 1930s. Not only was the economic base under pressure, the major parties were trying to save their own asses instead those of the people. They were and are commited to Capital.

Whenever capitalist governments e.g. Labour or Tory have the opportunity and think that they can win a few votes they resort into racist rhetoric such as saying that there must be a halt to immigration or cheaper labour within the EU is the cause for our workers losing jobs.

The BNP claims to stand for council housing and decent wages and an end the exploitation of white working class people and thus indirectly criticizes the effects of capitalism. This reactionary stand could also be observed with the Nazis in Germany.

Therefore, it is important to pose a revolutionary left-wing alternative that fights the exploitation of the working classes, privatisation, marketisation of education etc. What the people need is a Marxist critique of capitalism

Hinter dem Faschismus steht das Kapital - unser Kampf ist international!
Behind fascism lies capital - our struggle is international!

With the Twenty20 Cup having reached the Quarter-Final stage, the remaining eight sides are only three matches away from the riches of the inaugural Twenty20 Champions’ League (providing, of course, they don’t field any players from the ICL, and aren't replaced by teams from Pakistan).

Durham, before this year’s tournament began, had won fewer games of Twenty20 than any other county (a mere 8), but Shaun Pollock’s economy rate has been consistently low, and even a certain, currently banned player has turned out for the now-quite-well-named Dynamos, taking 5-14 against Derbyshire. Add to that the fact that runs are being contributed from a variety of sources, and Durham look like genuine contenders.

Essex's Twenty20 Cup campaign of 2008 is likely to be remembered mainly for Graham Napier's unbeaten 152 from 58 balls against Sussex, but James Foster has also made quite a few runs, and actually has a better Twenty20 average for this year than Napier. Ryan ten Doeschate is also worth a mention, and not just because his name is fun to type.

Kent won the Twenty20 Cup last year, and any team with the redoubtable Rob Key is surely a force to be reckoned with. As well as Key, Joe Denly has impressed some onlookers, whilst James Tredwell has bowled well. The Spitfires will be amongst the favourites, especially if Denly and Key keep their form, and Yasir Arafat (no, not that one) continues to perform well.

Lancashire have always been quite good at twenty20, so it's no surprise that the Lemurs have made it to this stage. Lou Vincent and Mal Loye have been scoring plenty of runs, whilst Mahmood and Marshall have been taking wickets. I'd like to think they can win the whole thing (preferably with Freddie bowling some overs and scoring some runs in the final).

Middlesex’s record in the Twenty20 Cup was, like Durham’s, pretty poor before the start of this year’s competition, but they've been making up for it this year, mainly due to an improvement in their bowling. They have no ICL players, so they could actually compete in the Champions' League with their current team, which is a plus. Also, they have Dirty Dirk Nannes.

Northamptonshire, unlike Middlesex, have loads of ICL players, so will probably not be Lalit Modi's favourites. I wouldn't have picked them to make it this far, to be truthful, but Rob White has made plenty of runs and numerous others have put in good performances at crucial times to put the Steelbacks into the last eight. Given that they've surprised me so far, I'm not going to write them off at this stage.

Warwickshire haven't made too many runs - they have only once scored above 160. Despite this, they've lost none, had a tie (ooh, a tie) and two matches which ended in no result, which means that their bowlers must be doing something right. Of those bowlers, Salisbury and Botha have been the pick, taking wickets and going for not many runs at all. All in all, the King of Spain's men definitely have the pedigree to make the finals day.

Yorkshire are strong contenders for the overall win. Adil Rashid has got a lot of people excited, and his 4-24 last night was proof that he can perform on the big occasion. Anthony McGrath, meanwhile, has scored more runs than anyone else in the competition. In addition, there's always Dazzler to spice things up a bit.

I don't think it was really a race - more of a walk for lots of women wearing items of pink clothing. What I'm talking about is the Cancer Research UK Race for Life 'fun' run that I took part in today. When I started running way back in February I could hardly run for about a minute and then in April I decided I needed a goal, so I joined up for the 5k Race for Life. Training went OK and I managed to run 4k on Wednesday just gone. This is the most I have ever run in all my years so I was feeling pretty confident about the race. As my husband was out today with the car, my parents took me to where the race was being held. It was at Hylands Park in Chelmsford (where the V Festival is going to be in August - I can't wait for that), which is about 30 mins drive from my home. We get to the park at around 10.30am due to the traffic but still had 30 mins before the official start of the race. The weather seemed ideal for running - cloudy and a gusty but warm breeze. After much hanging about near the start, the race didn't get going until 11.30am, during which time the weather decides it is actually summer. Out came the sun and it warmed up to about 25 degrees.

It took me about five minutes to get past the starting mark but I had my iPod with me so I could start the stopwatch. Started with a slight jog with lots of manoeuvring through the crowds. They announced at the beginning that there was 6,000 women racing but I reckon that 85% of them were actually walking, not what I would call racing. This caused a lot of problems at the beginning and as the course went around many bends there were a lot of bottlenecks of walkers. This made for tricky running so the first half kilometres was a mixture of running, jogging on the spot and stopping altogether. After about ten minutes things picked up and I managed to get some sort of rhythm. Running on grass is a whole new experience for me and I had to watch were I was going, avoiding dips and the long grass. I got to the 4k mark well and then I started to overheat with the sun burning down and another bottleneck of walkers that I stopped running and walked a good half of a kilometre. I was pretty gutted by this but I decided that fainting in a public place wasn't such a good idea. At around the 400m mark from the finish, I got back in to the running (as everyone else was) and finished in 48 minutes. Not as bad I as thought considering I walked part of it. A few friends said that I should be OK at the run as the atmosphere of everyone else running will spur me on but with so many women walking there didn't seem to be any spurring going on. I will continue to run (at home on the streets of Upminster) and would like to have another go at a 5K race, but next time I will make sure it is a mixed race (I can't see many men walking 5K) and maybe on the streets of London (or some other town), so the course might be wide enough to let everyone run or walk in a more comfortable environment. Now I'm going to drown my sorrows for not running it all by having a drink or two. At least I got an ice-cream at the end of it, thanks to my parents!

Today the Warped Tour kicks off it's summer tour bringing many punk rock people on having a great time on seeing their favourite band performing and have an awesome great time at the mosh pit. For those who live in "border cities" in Canada, they have to be aware of what they can bring back after spending less than 24 hours down in the states. In this case, let's start off with Windsor, Ontario - the border city of Detroit, Michigan.

Detroit can be accessible by car via the Ambassador Bridge (one of the busiest border crossings for cars and trucks) and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel (also one of the congested crossings). Recently, a new border crossing has been announced and an extension of the 401 is in the works - there are two proposals: the Greenlink proposal drafted by Windsor City Council and the Windsor-Essex Parkway, drafted by the Detroit River International Crossing study team (DRIC). These projects are designed to divert truck traffic off local streets.

Anyways, back to my topic. The Detroit leg of the Warped Tour is going to be held on July 18th, 2008 at Comerica Park. Many punk rock fans are trying to find rides on going to the Warped Tour over the international border (and as always, bring proof of citizenship along). A fan from the Warped Tour message board states that Detroit's transit system isn't reliable and user-friendly except the people mover that loops around the downtown core. To ride the people mover it costs 50 cents (American). The nearest people mover stop serving Comerica Park is "Grand Circus".

Many people in Windsor are still finding a way on how to get to Comerica Park, but they didn't realize that there's one (and only) way on get to Detroit - by public transit. Transit Windsor operates a service called the "Tunnel Bus" and it departs from the Windsor International Transit Terminal and includes an immediate stop outside Casino Windsor (now known as Caesars Windsor casino).

On regular days, the Tunnel Bus serves downtown Detroit, Cobo Center/Arena, Joe Louis Arena, Campus Martius Park and Hart Plaza. On special events, the Tunnel Bus serves Comerica Park or Ford Field. In the case of the Warped Tour, Transit Windsor should (and must) serve this stop, although there's no word if Transit Windsor will ever serve Comerica Park during the Warped Tour. If anyone know wants to know how much is to ride the Tunnel Bus, it's $3.75 cash fare (for regular services including Joe Louis & Cobo Center/Hall) or a set of 4 tickets will set you back for $15.00. In the case of special events to Comerica Park/Ford Field, it's $4.00 cash fare or $16 for a set of 4 tickets. Full information can be founded here: http://www.citywindsor.ca/001244.asp

Onwards, let's say a concert fan from Windsor visits the Warped Tour stop in Detroit and wants to buy something like a t-shirt or a CD. He/she purchases it and something should be issued - a receipt. A receipt is a vital piece of information if you are shopping down in the United States and you must declare everything as you return to Canada. If you fail to declare everything, the border officials in Canada will confiscate your items and you will have to pay a penalty to get them back. The Canadian Border Services Agency has set up information about cross-border shopping in the United States in which you can view it here.

So people who live in the Windsor area and heading to the Detroit stop of the Warped, be prepared to face anything. Expect the unexpected.

London. After having organised more than 20 national demonstrations Stop The War Coalition, Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and the British Muslim Initiative called for a rally in Parliament Square (Westminster) to protest George W. Bush jr. visit to London, the UK and Europe on Sunday June 15, 2008.

After 5 years of war in Iraq and 6 years of war in Afghanistan Britain’s anti-war movement had shrunk to only 3000 protestors wanting to welcome the infamous international terrorist George W. Bush who was having tea with Gordon Brown in Downing Street 500 yards further. Before leaving office George W. Bush jr. took the opportunity to applaud Gordon Brown and the New Labour government on being ‘tough on terror’.

Anti-war protestors quickly realised that being tough on terror implied a violation of civil liberties as marching down Whitehall was impossible as police had built up security barriers and banned the march to take the route past Downing Street. The clashes between the Metropolitan police blockading the road into Whitehall and peaceful anti-war protestors displayed in how far the United States has interfered with civil liberties in Great Britain as well as around the world. George W. Bush’s Operation Enduring Freedom has ended freedom.

Extensive police brutality got 25 protestors arrested, and three people charged with offences - amongst them a 60-year old woman who was charged with indecent exposure. Essex student Pete Simpson said: “Police were hitting our hands with their truncheons. They were standing over us like bullies with their weapons. I was hit on my arm, shoulder and head. Blood was streaming down my face.”

In an open letter to Sir Ian Blair of the Metropolitan Police George Galloway MP compares the police brutality of Sunday to the crackdown on the miners’ strike of ‘84-‘85. “Batons were drawn at least prematurely and were used with a level of aggression which frankly took my breath away.” Before protestors knew it riot police was deployed even though there was not a riot going on. This provocation by the Metropolitan Police put the anti-war protestors into a situation known to dictatorships that Bush and New Labour supposedly have been fighting so hard against. In direct confrontation with a police force of roughly 1500 the protest dissolved as the police was snatching protestors seemingly at random. Galloway: “The squad proceeded to deal out a shocking level of violence against unarmed civilian protestors, overwhelmingly young and many of them female.”

The lighter side of local government

Britain's got talent?

A busking drummer called Graeme "Bongo" Conway has been given three Xs from the noise abatement judges at Newcastle City Council and has had his drums seized by police.

The busker, who was ordered to quit Newcastle city centre after tormenting residents and shopkeepers with his relentless rhythms, defied an order imposed by council officials.

...snip...

Ed Foster, of Newcastle City Council's Night Watch team, said: "I can't pass comment on his skills as a musician, but a large part of the problem and the reason for the complaints was he was not going to the proper areas the council provides for buskers... he was playing outside people's homes for clubbers coming out of The Gate at two in the morning and some residents were at their wits' end."

Britain's Got More Talent

Essex County Council may offer a position to the runner-up on BBC reality tv show The Apprentice. It's certainly an innovative way of recruiting.

Meanwhile the host of the American edition of The Apprentice, Donald Trump is also dealing with British local government this week. He's still trying to get planning permission from Aberdeenshire CC for his super-duper golf course.
