News Update 02.05.08

North Carolina

Yesterday a dozen friends and family members testified on behalf of Lisa Greene, urging the jury to spare her life. Some said they didn't believe Greene was guilty, others said that the death penalty would only bring more pain to a family that has already endured the loss of two children. Greene's attorneys have not ruled out the possibility that Greene herself might take the stand today.

At a pretrial hearing yesterday, lawyers for Army Master Sgt. Timothy B. Hennis argued that the military does not have jurisdiction to try him for the 23-year-old triple murder of which Hennis was acquitted in civilian court. The lawyers argued that (1) there was a break in Hennis's service, which severs the military's ability to prosecute incidents occurring during the first term of service; (2) the incident occurred off-base and did not involve military personnel, and so did not have the requisite connection to the military; and (3) that the military did not follow proper procedure in pulling Hennis out of retirement back into active duty. The judge did not issue a decision. Hennis's next pretrial hearing is scheduled for April 8th. Background on the Tim Hennis case is here.

Elsewhere

Nebraska will be the next state to abolish the death penalty, if State Senator Ernie Chambers has anything to say about it. Among those speaking in favor of Chambers' bill: a man who spent 19 years on death row for a crime he did not commit, and a woman whose brother was murdered 23 years ago. Among those speaking against the bill: no one. More on former death row inmate Curtis McCarty here.

By the time the U.S. Supreme Court intervened to block the execution, Callahan was just a little more than an hour away from being put to death. He had visited with his family to say his goodbyes, and the prison system had gone through the necessary motions to prepare for the execution. Even worse, the mother and sister of his victim, Rebecca Suzanne Howell, had already traveled to Atmore to witness the execution. One of them came from Tennessee. The family called the ordeal "cruel and unusual." They are right, and [Alabama Attorney General Troy] King should be ashamed.

The Scrooge Report is ending 2007 with its first annual Top 10 Scrooge Moments of the Year. Week aft

The Scrooge Report is ending 2007 with its first annual Top 10 Scrooge Moments of the Year. Week after week, ever since the blog's kick off in April, This Week's Top Scrooge has been a regular feature. These top moments come from the weekly feature.

They are placed in no particular ranking...simply a list of dishonors given to some low moments in the year. Please enjoy!

Oh, and BTW...May you have a Merry Christmas! Season's Greetings and a Happy New Year! ....Sincerely, The Scrooge Report.

1. The Teacher and Muhammad Bear
Sudan: Officials seize a British teacher’s approval of students ‘Muhammad’ teddy bear to play the culture card

I rarely pick international Scrooges and I suppose there are worse atrocities in the world, but this case could not be left alone.

Sure, the Sudanese government’s imprisonment of a kindly-looking teacher for the “hate crime” of allowing her students to name a teddy bear Muhammad may not seem like a big deal to some.

After all, her sentence was only 15 days (she was later pardoned after serving 10 days) and the maximum 6-month sentence and 40 lashes were not dished out by the Sudanese judge. I guess to prison veterans (and Muslim jailers), this is just a walk in the park. But for a teacher?

In finding that British primary school teacher, Gillian Gibbons, was guilty of insulting Islam by allowing her seven-year-old pupils to name a teddy bear Muhammad, Sudanese officials deliberately assaulted reason.

The Sudanese leaders attempted to use Gibbons and Teddy ‘Muhammad’ Bear to call the rest of the non-Muslim world ignorant for not bowing to them. They are saying that all of us must walk on egg shells, careful to not accidently be offensive or we will be lashed, imprisoned, or killed....

2. The Politician and the Firestorm
While fires were still scorching vast amounts of land and lives were still in the balace in Southern California, the state’s Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi had time to politicize the relief effort and throw darts at President George Bush.

Lt. Governor Garamendi also had time to appear on several news shows earlier in the week to erroneously say that the war in Iraq was to blame for a limited amount of National Guard troops able to fight the fires in California.

Without missing a beat, he also said the president’s visit to the disaster scene Thursday was a distraction. In one interview the Democrat said, “OK, President Bush comes out, we’ll be polite. But frankly, that’s not the solution. How about sending our National Guard back from Iraq so that we have those people available here to help us?”

Savvy reporters were able to dispute Garamendi in a heartbeat with several facts from the Pentagon, including that some 1,500 Army National Guard and Air National Guardsmen were helping firefighters, not on the fire lines, but doing other tasks to free up the firefighters....

3. Beyond Shocking and Britney
DJ Big Boy and WKQI-FM Darken Radio with Britney Suicide Watch Contest

Poking fun at people can be fun. How many of us have wisecracked about Britney Spears? Maybe you were not the originator of a Britney “observation”, but you’re certainly up on her recent trials and join the finger pointing with seemingly the entire nation about her weak parenting skills.

How can we not help but shake our head as we are deluged every day with her tabloid headline making actions?

That said, DJ Big Boy and radio station WKQI-FM, better known as Channel 95.5 in Detroit displayed gross insensitivity when they announced a “Britney Suicide Watch” contest....

4. Leona and Her Rich Dog
Leona Helmsley Earns Top Scrooge Posthumously

Even if pastors miffed, many church sermons should have included the story of Leona Helmsley and her dog, Trouble, the Sunday after this news broke, i.e., “But God said to him, ‘You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get it all?’”

In case you missed it, Trouble…her pet…inherited $12 million. And for good measure, Trouble’s “fortunes” won’t be over even after her life ends. “I direct that when my dog, Trouble, dies, her remains shall be buried next to my remains in the Helmsley mausoleum,” she ordered. And she left another $3 million to ensure that final resting place is well maintained, including money for a yearly wash or steam-cleaning.

Twelve million dollars. That’s two more million dollars than two of her grandchildren are getting combined ($5 million each) and $12 million more than her other two grandchildren are getting…because they are getting zippo as in nada, nothing, and zilch....

5. Cheating Fool and 1-800-FLOWERS
Lawsuit: Texas Man’s Dirty Laundry Aired in Public…World!

Commit adultery? Don’t expect to shoot the messenger!

Apparently, Leroy Greer may have not wanted to kill anyone from 1-800-Flowers, but he sued the florist company for $1 million for revealing that he was cheating on his wife.

Greer said in a lawsuit filed in a federal court in Texas that he bought flowers for his girlfriend through 1-800-Flowers. He asked to keep his purchase private. Greer said he was referred to the company’s privacy policy, which states that customers can ask 1-800-Flowers not to share personal information with “third parties.”

But, the lawsuit says, 1-800-Flowers sent a thank-you note to his house and his wife saw it. When she called the company, 1-800-Flowers faxed her a copy of the receipt from Greer’s secret purchase.

The receipt revealed that Greer had sent another woman a dozen long-stemmed red roses, along with a note that read, “Just wanted to say that I love you and you mean the world to me!” according to court documents....

6. QB Into the Pit (Bulls)
Atlanta’s Michael Vick was charged with running a dog-fighting ring while a brutal “sport” comes to light right here in America

When Nike’s long-running ad campaign was conceived, I don’t believe the company’s creative types had dog fighting in mind when they came up with “Just Do It!”

Apparently, Michael Vick didn’t get the memo.

What was he thinking? Not much apparently, as he was found guilty after the Atlanta Falcons quarterback and three others were indicted by a federal grand jury. The four were charged with competitive dogfighting, procuring and training pit bulls for fighting and conducting the enterprise across state lines....

7. The Pope's Blunder
By approving a document saying non-Catholic Christian communities are either defective or not true churches, and the Roman Catholic Church provides the only true path to salvation, Pope Benedict leaves someone behind - Jesus!

The only statement that I would be thrilled to hear coming out of the Pope’s mouth is that Jesus is the way to salvation…not Catholicism, not 40 Hail Mary’s, not participation in a soup kitchen, not a Sunday service…and while I am on a roll…not ANY “religion”.

All that said, the Pope’s statment is really old news. The Catholic faith has been misleading people for a long time. Not to say that some Catholics are not saved, but they are a “works” based religion…guiding people to jump through hoops to get to heaven.

Sorry, it’s all about a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Unless a church is preaching that, it’s barking up the wrong tree....

8. Hospital Horror
Emergency at Martin Luther King Jr.-Harbor Hospital Takes a Back Seat

No one should be ignored in a hospital emergency room lobby. But right here in America, in Los Angeles, California, inside the Martin Luther King-Harbor Hospital emergency room lobby, on May 9, 2007, someone was ignored and died as a result.

Edith Isabel Rodriguez, 43, died in the King-Harbor emergency room after writhing in pain on the floor for 45 minutes. The world knows about it because the incident was captured on security cameras and two witnesses called 911 requesting help and they are rebuffed.

As the Los Angeles Times reported, the event might have gone down as the death of a “quasi-transient” woman with a history of abusing drugs. That’s how the death of Rodriguez was initially reported to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office....

9. Blind Ambitions and Proven Miracles
Freedom From Religion Foundation files lawsuit against Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch

The associations of freethinkers, atheists, agnostics and skeptics of any pedigree, such as the Freedom From Religion group describes itself, can play the lawsuit games they play all day long without bothering me.

However, when it comes to messing with successful youth programs, especially successful foster care programs, I draw the line. It’s time for Americans to take a look at a group like the Freedom From Religion Foundation, see that they are trying to knock down institutions that are the best this country has to offer and say “enough!”

The most recent foray of yet another misguided group is Freedom of Religion’s attempt at stopping government funds to a 55-years-old North Dakota foster care ranch and its program.

The atheist group asked a judge to declare a violation of separation of church and state in regards to public money going to the Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch. The group sought to stop the government from sending children or money to the ranch. Freedom From Religion claims the money is being used to religiously indoctrinate young people....

10. A Woman's Home Up For Grabs
Online Hoax Strips Home of Everything

I reckon because of its perverted creativity and the threat that this could probably happen to just about anyone, ths Scrooge moment is provided by the instigator of an online hoax in which a women’s home became up for grabs.

A fake ad on craigslist offered everything in Laurie Raye’s house for free. By the time she realized what was going on, the house had been stripped of its light fixtures, hot water heater — even the kitchen sink.

Even the front door and a vinyl window were pilfered, Raye said in an AP story.

NATE JENKINS AP - viernes, 21 de septiembre, 03.22

LINCOLN, Nebraska, EE.UU.

In the weeks since Democratic senator Ernie Chambers filed a lawsuit against God, there have been two responses made in His defense. The senator’s lawsuit said that God has made “terroristic threats” against him and his constituents, inspired fear and caused "widespread death, destruction and terrorization of millions upon millions of the Earth's inhabitants." It also says that God has caused "fearsome floods, egregious earthquakes, horrendous hurricanes, terrifying tornadoes, pestilential plagues", and calls for a “permanent injunction, ordering Defendant to cease certain harmful activities and the making of terroristic threats."

One defense was put forth by Eric Perkins, an attorney from Corpus Christie Texas. Perkins said that he looked at it as a “What would God say” kind of issue. Perkins’ response stated that, "Defendant denies that this or any court has jurisdiction ... over Him any more than the court has jurisdiction over the wind or rain, sunlight or darkness".

He also wrote that God "contends that any harm or injury suffered is a direct and proximate result of mankind ignoring obvious warnings."

The other response was an anonymous one made about a week after the senator first filed his lawsuit. The response was found on the counter in legal filing. In the second response, God states: “ the suit by Sen. Ernie Chambers (D-Omaha) should be thrown out because there was ‘no proper and sufficient service of summons’ by a deputy”.

While in some ways this is comical, in others, it is very serious and I believe that it points to a serious issue that starts with the church. In recent generations, there has been a noticeable lack of the fear of the Lord. Many in the church no longer respect God for who He is or the power that He holds. If we are to see a true change in our country, it has to start in the church. 1 Peter 4:17 says that judgment starts in the house of God and it is something that each and every one of us in the body of Christ should take to heart.

I'm riled up about this one....just to give you fair warning...

This weekend, as I was meandering through a few blogs, I happened upon this post by Crownslaiddown about Nebraska Senator Ernie Chambers, who is suing God. Being intrigued, I clicked on the link within her post to this article. And of course, once I read that article, I had to click on the pdf file for the court document.

Sure, in this day and age -- in America! --somebody trying to sue God does not shock me. But, I wondered, what's his angle? What point is he trying to prove? Turns out, according to the KPTM Fox 42 News, he's trying to "fight possible laws restricting the filing of frivolous lawsuits." In other words, he's trying to prove, through this lawsuit, that possible legislation restricting frivolous lawsuits should NOT be introduced/passed. Am I missing something? Because to me, filing a frivolous lawsuit to keep frivolous lawsuits from being restricted is a little counter-productive.

But, I don't really want to go off on a long rant about the Senator's choice. What intrigues me more is embedded within his Petition for Permanent Injunction.

In his Petition, the Senator requests that God be ordered to "cease certain harmful activities and the making of terroristic threats." (These activities and threats include hurricanes, tornadoes, etc.) He then goes on to argue that this case is allowed to be filed in this district court because God is present there through various agents "who publicly and notoriously hold themselves out to be agents of [God] who are authorized to speak for and represent [God]." (Don't even get me started on what some of these "agents" are saying....) And that because God never "publicly has disavowed explicitly" these agents, they may be "deemed to be, in fact, agents of Defendant".

But here's the kicker that wipes the mildly amused smile off my face:

"9. Said agents...appear to be hopelessly alienated, fractious, separated from, and antagonistic towards one another."

Wow. Regardless of Senator Chambers purpose in preparing and filing this document, that statement cannot be easily dismissed. And although he includes many "agents" within this document that are not associated with Christians in any way or form, we cannot deny that the Church is "alienated, fractious, separated from, and antagonistic towards one another." And that is not what we are supposed to be.

It is very painful to realize that, as agents of God, our actions...our behavior is being used, albeit hopelessly, AGAINST GOD in an American court of law.

Previously, I would have been very disheartened by this story. Now, though, I maintain great hope. Although the world may often see a disjointed and fractious body of Christ, I see and feel a current of believers who are crying out for change and who are bound and determined to show the world the true nature of Christ. Little by little. Individual person by individual person. I am currently surrounded in a community of people who are spending their time digging into God's word. And they're not turning away from the difficult parts. As Isaiah 50:5 says: "The Sovereign LORD has opened [our] ears, and [we] have not been rebellious; [we] have not turned back"!

I believe that a majority of Christians are honestly seeking God and growing in their faith (although we all have our ugly mood moments). And that as we mentor each other and hold each other accountable, we will continue to prove to the world, one-by-one, that God is who he says he is. And that he is THE Sovereign LORD whom we can fear (as the Senator is attempting to feed upon) and fall in love with at the same time!

Check out the above links and tell me what you think. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Faxing a response in regards to lawsuit: $5
Phone bill from handling media inquiries: $100

The discussion about God: priceless....and eternal!

This from AP:

'God' gets an attorney in lawsuit

By ANNA JO BRATTON

LINCOLN, Neb. - The mystery of one response to a lawsuit against God has been solved. Eric Perkins, an attorney in Corpus Christi, Texas, said Friday he filed a response to the lawsuit from Nebraska State Sen. Ernie Chambers. "It's kind of a turn on 'What would Jesus do?'" Perkins said. "I thought to myself, "what would God say?"

"Defendant denies that this or any court has jurisdiction ... over Him any more than the court has jurisdiction over the wind or rain, sunlight or darkness," according to Perkins' response.

As for Chambers' contention that God made terroristic threats, inspired fear and caused "widespread death, destruction and terrorization," Perkins wrote that God "contends that any harm or injury suffered is a direct and proximate result of mankind ignoring obvious warnings."

Perkins, who said he is a Christian, faxed one of at least two responses to Chambers' lawsuit. He said while he hopes the lawsuit was just a stunt by Chambers, "maybe his timing has something to do with world affairs. I'd hate to be that person who sat back and did nothing."

The problem of serving God a summons could land the lawsuit in the earthly scrap heap of failed legal actions.

But whether the issue goes before a judge may largely depend on how hard Chambers pushes the issue. The senator isn't asking that notice be served to God, but says in his lawsuit that if he doesn't get a summary judgment in the case, he wants a hearing — "if the court deems such a hearing not to be a futile act."

Chambers, a self-proclaimed agnostic, said he's trying to makes the point that anybody can sue anybody. He said his filing was triggered by a federal lawsuit he considers frivolous.

It's still not clear where a second response from "God" came from. There was no contact information on the filing, which turned up on the counter at the Douglas County Court office, although St. Michael the Archangel is listed as a witness.

Attempts to reach Chambers by phone Friday were unsuccessful.

Did anybody read/watch/hear about the news regarding a Nebraska State senator suing God ( and his followers) for terrorist threats?

My question sounds like a bad opening line for a joke, but it's true. Click on this sentence to read the full article.

I find the whole thing incredibly stupid especially this line : "God did not immediately respond to a non-denominational prayer for comment by this reporter." and " Chambers attempted to make God appear in order to serve him by saying "Come out, come out, wherever you are," but the Almighty declined..."

DUH. I'd be surprised if he did come out.

Imagine seeing God on the news answering the reporter's questions. I bet that interview would last a lifetime! harharhar! There'd be lots of people who would want air time with him! (Or her. Or it. Whatever you believe God to be. ) It would cause a MAJOR riot! Every religion on earth would want to spend some quality time with God! Baka ipakidnap pa nila!

God will not show himself/herself/itself to any living person at this time because no one is ready for that ultimate face off. Hindi natin kakayanin makipagtalastasan sa kanya. We would be in the presence of a true king (or queen) ,a true leader. Of true greatness. Sabi nga sa isa sa mga favorite books ko na may pamagat na Till we have Faces: " I know now, Lord, why you utter no answer. You are yourself the answer. Before your face questions die away. " Kaya nagpaparamdam lang si God sa mga tapat sa kanya.

Anyway, good luck na lang kay Senator Ernie Chambers. Pero sa tingin ko there's no chance in hell na mananalo sya sa kasong Chambers v. God. :p

Evidently there isn't much for the State Senate in Nebraska to do, because the good Senator Ernie Chambers has filed a lawsuit against God. Yes. Go back and read that sentence again. You are not misreading it and I certainly did not mistype it.

Nebraska always struck me as a fairly conservative and hence relatively level-headed state. I suppose every once in a while someone as mentally disturbed as Ernie Chambers can get by even the most down to earth people.

Let's forget for the moment that God is the ultimate authority on what takes place in the universe. Let's also forget for the moment that God is neither legally nor morally bound to respond to any lawsuit by any mortal on this terrestrial sphere. We will also pretend that Chambers, by some miracle undisclosed. has not lost his mind.

Where does Chambers get the notion that it is in the public's interest to file a frivolous lawsuit against a plaintiff that will neither show up in court of His own volition or can be forced to do so? What logical conclusion could such a lawsuit come to?

These nutjob politicians and activists will go to any length to make symbolic statements such as these. Whether it is suing God, staging "die ins" to protest the war in Iraq, or burning bras to protest "the cruel patriarchy", one thing is clear.

It's a shame we can't scoop these addled masses up in front end loaders like in Soylent Green and get them off the street. Idiots like these need a steady intravenous drip of sedatives and anti-psychotic drugs

NEBRASKA STATE SENATOR Ernie Chambers sued God last week. According to an AP report:

“Chambers says in his lawsuit that God has made terroristic threats against the senator and his constituents, inspired fear and caused ‘widespread death, destruction and terrorization of millions upon millions of the Earth’s inhabitants.’

“The Omaha senator, who skips morning prayers during the legislative session and often criticizes Christians, also says God has caused ‘fearsome floods ... horrendous hurricanes, terrifying tornadoes.’

“He’s seeking a permanent injunction against the Almighty.”

It’s true that it’s not always easy to sort things out in this great battle between good and evil—between God and Satan. And sometimes I think Christians do offer simplistic answers to questions that may not be fully answerable until we’re all on the other side.

Still, it’s also simplistic to ignore that there ARE two sides in this war of all wars—and to reflexively and unfairly assume that the blame for all evil belongs on God’s doorstep.

We each have to reach our own conclusions, of course. But for me, it makes sense that the devil is quite happy to go around setting fires and then accusing God of arson. From the beginning, he’s poured plenty of energy into painting God as the villain. For what he himself causes, Satan consistently gives God the blame.

But then, Ernie isn’t saying anything insurance companies haven’t already said, when they call the acts of Satan “Acts of God.”

Nebraska State Sen. Ernie Chambers, while trying to make a point about frivoulous lawsuits accuses God:

"of making and continuing to make terroristic threats of grave harm to innumerable persons, including constituents of Plaintiff who Plaintiff has the duty to represent."

of causing "fearsome floods, egregious earthquakes, horrendous hurricanes, terrifying tornadoes, pestilential plagues, ferocious famines, devastating droughts, genocidal wars, birth defects and the like."

The lawsuit also says that God has caused:

"calamitous catastrophes resulting in the wide-spread death, destruction and terrorization of millions upon millions of the Earth’s inhabitants including innocent babes, infants, children, the aged and infirm without mercy or distinction."

Detailing his attempts to contact the defendant, Chambers states:

"Plaintiff, despite reasonable efforts to effectuate personal service upon defendant 'Come out, come out, wherever you are,' has been unable to do so,'"

A Nebraska state senator is filing a lawsuit against God.It’s supposedly some kind of a stunt

A Nebraska state senator is filing a lawsuit against God.It's supposedly some kind of a stunt to highlight the problem of frivolous lawsuits. The way the complaint is worded, it also highlights a fundamental problem in human thinking -- the idea that we have any business telling God the way the world should be working. He complains of terrible threats that God makes against humanity, of killing without remorse, and other prattle

To argue this case, I cite only Job 38-42. If you need to look that up, feel free to use the link to Bible Gateway down on the side.

To sum it up very quickly, I choose a few verses (all taken from the NIV):

Job 38:2-5 "Who is this that darkens My counsel with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer Me. Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell Me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it?"

Job 40:8 "Would you discredit My justice? Would you condemn Me to justify yourself?"

Job 40:11 "Who has a claim against me that I must pay? Everything under heaven belongs to Me."

I know ... this isn't Sen. Chambers' plan. He doesn't really plan to make this case, he just wants to prove how stupid it is. My problem is, he made these charges against God, whether he was kidding or not.

Moreover, there are people who do make these kinds of arguments. They hold it against God that bad things happen in the world. It is important to know that it's God's world. Nothing happens without His will ... and when we think He's out of line or when we think He isn't fair, or when we think He's done us wrong, what that means is that we need to take some time and reassess our own priorities. Something is wrong with how we're seeing the world, and we need to get our hearts in line with His.
