Osmun Music has just received another shipment of AK Brass Press titles. Andrew Kissling, the founder and operator of AKBP is at the forefront of producing and arranging brass ensemble music that is highly organized and enjoyable to perform. All of the AKBP is printed using Finale and includes full scores. Also, the AK arrangements will include transposed trumpet parts for both C and Bb trumpets. AKBP produces a full line of standard and non-standard pieces for brass quintets/quartets as well as the arrangements for the Synergy Brass Quintet. In our opinion, the AKBP titles are quite a value and would be perfect for filling out your brass ensemble repertoire.

NTU Piano Ensemble: Assistant Music Director's Tasks

Since there is the word “Assistant”, the task of the Assistant Music Director is at leas

Since there is the word "Assistant", the task of the Assistant Music Director is at least to help the Music Director.

The real implementation requires much more effort than simply helping the Music Director. In fact, the Assistant Music Director also works almost like Logistics and Secretary.

Why Logistics?

It's basically because the Assistant Music Library must take charge of NTU Piano Ensemble's Library, which is located at that 'hill' near hall 6 and hall 2.

To take charge of the NTU Piano Ensemble Library, one must oversee the collections in the cabinet in front of the Nanyang House General Office. To check the cabinet, one must have the key to the cabinet. This key is actually also brought along by the Logistics.

The Assistant is also required to organize the [quite-a-lot] collections...

Why Secretary?

I can say that Assistant Music Director position is somewhat like the secretary of the Music Director. Music Director directly takes charge of artistic matters of the players' performances. The Assistant, however, must provide some details about the players to help the Music Director.

If it's just about the details about each player, one can just meet the secretary. However, the secretary is not in charge of artistic matters of the players. So it's somewhat quite a bit logical if she doesn't know some particulars about the players in that situation.

Pour que tu ne meures pas
J'ai prié jour et nuit
Un Dieu que j'ignorais
Pour qu'il te garde en vie
Je priais à genoux
Pour qu'il te laisse à nous

Je faisais les prières
Que je me récitais
Lorsque j'étais enfant
Je disais Notre Père
Je vous salue Marie....

Et je cherchais en vain
Dans le ciel ici bas
Des instants de répit
Que je trouvais enfin
Dans le creux de tes bras

Pour que tu restes en vie
J'aurais prié Bouddha...

Pour que tu ne meures pas
Je plongeais mon regard
Au plus profond du tien
Pour soigner ton chagrin
J'aurais voulu qu'on m'aide
A trouver le remède

J'aurais changé l'histoire
Pour effacer les jours
Qui déposaient du noir
Autour de ton amour
Pour en briser le cours

J'aurais voulu pouvoir
Voler à ton secours...

Pour que tu ne meures pas
J'ai chanté certains soirs
Tous les chants de l'espoir
Que j'écrivais pour toi

Et je montais si haut
Vers l'infiniment beau
Pour pouvoir rapporter
Un peu d'éternité
A t'offrir en cadeau

Quand je t'ouvrais mon coeur
En caressant ta peau
Comme on touche un trésor
Tu te battais si bien
On se sentait si forts

In about an hour I have to be up at the school because it's the Open Day. I know, who puts an Open Day on a school holiday, absolute ludicrous. So when I'm up there I have to do the usual performing thing in Concert Band and Percussion Enesmble. Percussion sucks at the moment, we haven't started a new song in ages and probably won't for the rest of the year. At least Concert Band is good, we won first place in our division in Jazzin Up the Mall. The mall being the Queen Street one...so yeah, suck on that respected members of the different bands. Bitches!!

Anyways apart from performing and stuff because I'm in year 10 I have to do my subject selection for senior years, I don't quite know exactly what I'm doing, I think I have a fair idea. Modern History, Maths B, Science 21 or Biology, IPT (computer stuf), Music, English, something to do with business, and possibly legal studies. I've narrowed what I want to be down to about 2 catagories: Music and Journalism. Music as in being a classroom music teacher...high school classrooms..not bloody primary school, those brats can go to hell. I'll blog about how they're all spoilt and in some cases slutty some other time.

I think it'd be cool to be a journalist. I don't quite know what...form? I'd be in...I would like to be a TV reporter but I'm guessing that's the hardest one to get into. I don't even know HOW to get into it. I've looked ta some uni courses but I don't fully understand how that all works. If I do become a reporter I realllllllllyyy want to have a kick ass blooper. It's a fact, alll journalists are going to have a blooper. It's inevitable. Fate even. But when I have one it has to be spectacular and involve swearing, paying out someone everyone loves, and wit. God forbid this actually does happen but how funny would it be, it'd be hilarious!

I don't like Today Tonight, but Anna Coren is funny, the old host Naomi Robson was annoying, but I LOVE her bloopers.

If I ever become a journalist I want bloopers like Naomi Robsons...but they better not ruin my career.

Today’s reflection of greatness is yet another standout performance by a funny lady in an alre

Today's reflection of greatness is yet another standout performance by a funny lady in an already impressive ensemble cast. Did you ever see the film "Clue"? Though it has quite a cult following now, it kind of tanked when it was first released, so don't feel bad if you haven't. I don't know why it didn't perform...reviews weren't terrible or anything, it stands at 74% on rottentomatoes.com and that means it's fresh! Maybe because it was based on a board game? Were people just not lining up to see that in droves? Here's the trailer:

Each positive review on the rottentomato site claims to favor a different actor..."Curry saves the film" or "Warren's Miss Scarlett is the standout". It is hard to pick a clear winner and why bother? Ensemble films are team efforts. One person looks sloppy and they all do. Tim Curry, Eileen Brennan, Lesley Ann Warren, Martin Mull, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, jeez even Colleen Camp, they all hold their own. They've all got their moments of supreme quotability in this broad murder mystery farce. But, today I'm going to focus on the woman that Mel Brooks said this about: "She is one of the most talented people that ever lived. I mean, either in stand-up comedy, or acting, or whatever you want, you can't beat Madeline Kahn."

21. Madeline Kahn in Clue

She was born Madeline Gail Wolfson to non-practicing Jewish parents in Boston, Massachusetts. Her parents divorced when she was two and she eventually wound up taking the name of her mother's second husband-- Kahn. She went to school in both Pennsylvania and in Queens, New York. Eventually, she graduated from Hofstra with a degree in speech therapy. She went on to do oodles of theater and some great films--"Young Frankenstien" and "Blazing Saddles" being two of the best. Actually, quite a reserved person (according to both Mel Brooks and the New York Times piece that I just read), she was one of those non-comedian comedians, if you know what I mean. Aren't the best comic performances the ones that are played completely straight? She seemed to know that. And isn't that the hardest thing to do? When you have a ridiculous line of dialogue but can play it absolutely for real? Me? I'm the type that laughs at my own jokes, let alone actual scripted jokes--far more annoying.

In 1985, fourteen years before Kahn would die of ovarian cancer at the age of 57, she gave us one of history's most underrated performances. Well, underrated by the world at large maybe, but it's certainly rated by my circle of friends. There's not one of us who doesn't go mad for her in this scene:

By the way, I've read that that scene was ad-libbed. Completely awesome. Man...I do realize that I'm starting to sound a bit James Lipton-ey here...but come on. She's tremendous.

Here's a website with loads of sound clips of Mrs. White moments in the film. It's from a Madelind Kahn fan page. A lot of them would make most excellent ringtones or message alerts.

http://members.tripod.com/~MKahnFan/clue.html

The film, purportedly, has started to get a bit of the "Rocky Horror" treatment...you know, midnight showings with a shadowcast troupe that acts out the film while it plays. It doesn't look like quite the widespread epidemic yet, so maybe you should start one in your home town. Come on, you know that you've always wanted to sort your friends as corresponding to either Colonel Mustard, Mrs. Peacock, and Miss Scarlett (she's the slutty one--cast her with the same friend you'd cast as Samantha Jones in "Sex and the City"--see, it's easy!)

With Universal Studios recently purchasing the rights to loads of Hasbro toys, a remake might be in the works--this might also mean the birth of a Battleship film as well (what has "Transformers" wrought?). I have mixed feelings about this. I'd rather not see it happen, I suppose. The movie has such a special place in my heart. It was half of a double feature that my sister and I saw with my Mom soon after my parents got divorced. The other movie was "Jewel of the Nile"--feh. Anyway, that is the incident known as the night my Mom decided to cut loose and not worry about the money we didn't have. We went out to eat at a yummy family diner restaurant that was in the same plaza as the movie theatre--Hyatt's it was called--AND saw two movies that night AND got snacks at the cinema too. Unbeatable. Too much glee associated with that film to recast it...

Funny, a meal out and a double feature is still my perfect day.

Posted by Jane

My friend Liz invited me to a theme party my first week back in London, and naturally I said yes; though I had nothing to wear. It was a 1940's do with lots of gin and swing music. Or at least that's what I expected.

Being of little means calls for being extra creative. And with a little help from my friend Carla I devised an almost secretarial ensemble that fit the era quite perfectly.

I borrowed Carla's red alligator shoes and found a pair of nude stockings at the bottom of my suitcase, topped with a bare black skirt and a black top with ruffled sleeves and ruffles in the front. I just tucked it in, added some dangling earrings my mother gave me and Carla did my hair with bobby pins in a proper 40's up do. I added a lilac in my hair and some bright red lipstick for the finishing touches. I looked fabulous, as did my counterparts.

Carla, Liz and I stopped into a pub around the corner from the party to have dinner. We had some fish and chips and a pitcher of gin and raspberry fizz. I'm not usually one for fried food but somehow I was in the mood. We had a great time getting tipsy before the party. And it was a good thing we did.

When we went to find the place, it was this secret underground door. Good start. We walked down into the basement where guys in soldiers uniforms and girls in flowery dresses and hats commenced, drinks in hand and decorations from floral wall print to vintage chairs surrounding us. Another good start.

Unfortunately the company was quite dull and the lack of air conditioning was brutal given it was around 30 degrees that night. (85 F) And to my surprise, the DJ's didn't find it apropos to actually have 1940's music playing at a 1940's party.

Yes, they were playing Techno. Why on earth would you play Techno when people are dressed like Fred and Ginger?

Anyway, to express our disappointment thoroughly, we walked up to the DJ and asked him what the hell he was doing. He said he was playing 40's music earlier in the party but nobody was dancing. I looked around. Nobody was dancing to the bloody Techno either. When I pointed this out, he made up another lame excuse about moving up his choices by decade.

Just. No. This was a theme party. If they wanted to do that they should have just made it a free for all game where the drunker you get the more modern your clothes become. I would have found this perfectly acceptable as, like I said before, the heat was deathly. We could of all just played strip poker to the fucking Techno.

Us girls made the best of it though, and embarked on a partially drunken photo shoot with Carla's super sexy professional Nikon camera.

Gandhi also appeared a bit later on in full white garb, sandals and some rounded purple glasses. I found this hilarious and asked Carla to take a picture with him. He then replied (in a very Indian accent)

"Wait, let me get my pint for the full effect."

When the DJ's finally sobered up and put some 40's (more like 30's) music on, we danced a bit, and drank a bit more, but all in all it was a great let down to what have been a truly fabulous evening. You'd think London would know how to do a party of this nature right.

I couldn't stop thinking of the irony surrounding the fact that this very city had been bombed during Word War II not 2 or 3 blocks away from where we were very badly portraying the era, almost like a high school party with cheap, watered down booze, almost mocking the people who sacrificed so much for so little. I felt kind of sick about it. Not to mention the shoes were killing me as they were 2 sizes too big and stuff to the brim with toilet paper. Liz felt sort of sick and Carla was bored. So we left.

Lame.

(this post applies to those games that wouldn't obviously be more suited to a more adrenaline-based soundtrack based on rock or hip hop or accordion, etc.)

I'm all for epic orchestral soundtracks. There's nothing like hearing a huge orchestra playing grand themes and sweeping us up in the excitement of victory and moving us to tears in times of strife.

But only in the right games.

Not every game calls for a full orchestra with a choir, just like not every game calls for a hip hop or a rock soundtrack. But so many games could benefit from pulling back a little and experimenting. Especially in the world of indie games where the gameplay is often new and innovative, why not come up with a new and innovative music ensemble to complete the picture?

The first couple of Katamari games did this beautifully. Their ensembles ran a huge stylistic spectrum. There were lovely lush orchestral pieces, but there were also some pieces with almost unidentifiable instruments playing the Katamari themes in new and interesting ways. And it was all executed masterfully. The mish mash of ensembles fit the gameplay, just like the way the ball grows bigger by collecting a mish mash of random objects.

It would be refreshing to hear a soundtrack that had only piano. Or maybe a soundtrack that had classical instruments, but only two at a time. Not every game art style uses the same palette of colors. Why should the game audio style? It really comes down to the game. I've just seen too many games with a forced orchestral soundtrack.

Granted, this isn't a huge problem. But it does seem that far too often the first template game composers go for is the orchestral one. Why is this? Well, probably because writing for an orchestra is actually easier than writing for smaller ensembles. You have an incredible amount of colors to choose from. There is a wide variety of cliches to throw in, ever so effortlessly. A bigger ensemble being easier to write for seems a bit counterintuitive. And certainly, making a fresh and interesting orchestral piece is very difficult. But to throw together something acceptable is a cinch with an orchestra.

Part of the reason for this blog is to help improve the quality of game soundtracks and "acceptable" doesn't cut it. We want "awesome" or "yowza, I'm speechless!", right? Originality within the music and within the music's colors heads us in the right direction. This isn't all on the composer's shoulders, of course. All you game devs out there should think carefully about your music direction. Sure, consider an orchestra. But maybe step back a second and think if there is any other sound you might like. Solo guitar? Some Jethro Tull flute and cello? Give it a shot.

Halo Wars has been a very elusive game for being a Halo title. Few screenshots and even fewer bits of video have come out concerning the game and what has come out has been very little. Fortunately for us, E3 is here and with it comes tons of media, Halo Wars included. So let's dive into it.

FYI, This page will be updated as more media comes in.

A few movies at local cinemas right now are into their second, third, or even more weeks on show. Th

A few movies at local cinemas right now are into their second, third, or even more weeks on show. The best of them is “Wanted”, which may be only a straightforward bang ‘em up action movie, but is a great example of its kind and can take your breath away at times. I’ve already talked about that in some detail.

Also hanging on is the Will Smith movie “Hancock”, which is what happens when you sell a high concept to a movie studio but don’t really carry it through effectively. The “high concept” is that it’s about John Hancock (Will Smith), a super hero with an attitude problem. He discovered his superpowers after waking from a coma in Miami years before, and doesn’t really want them.

Not only would he rather drink and sleep on a wooden bench than save the world, when he is called upon to do something heroic he does it in a pretty slapdash manner, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars of public damage, and then gets angry when onlookers criticize him for it. That begins to change when he rescues struggling PR man Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman) from the path of a train, and Ray decides he can do something to improve Hancock’s image. He begins by taking Hancock to his home for dinner, where he introduces him to wife Mary (Charlize Theron) and son Aaron (Jae Head). Mary has a somewhat strange response to Hancock, which suggests that there might not only be an attraction there, but some kind of history between them.

Ray’s first suggestion is that Hancock voluntarily submit to a prison sentence for all the damage he’s caused, long with rehabilitation and anger-management training. He figures that as soon as the crime rate goes up the authorities will ask their only super hero to help them out and – as long as he says the right thing and smiles – his reputation will be saved.

Unfortunately, on his first excursion out, Hancock crosses paths with a particularly nasty villain Red (played by Eddie Marsan) who is determined to take revenge on him.

Here, what starts as a comedy suddenly tries to turn into a more serious movie, and becomes increasingly nonsensical in the process. Why would a mortal assume he COULD get revenge on a super-hero, rather than leave well enough alone? Not only that, suddenly it also tries to turn into a kind of tragic romance story, and the mood it needs for that is never quite achieved either.

Some of the responsibility for that has to lie with director Peter Berg, who goes for a grungy and kinetic look, but never manages to give the whole movie a unified tone. More probably lies with the grab bag of writers who’ve worked on it. The script is credited to Vy Vincent Ngo and Vince Gilligan, but several others have worked on it, including producers Akiva Goldsman and Michael Mann. Other directors, including Jonathan Mostow and Gabriele Muccino, also gave their input before Berg was signed on. No wonder if looks as if far too many cooks have stirred this rather unwieldy part.

To give it any kind of unified form that would have made it satisfying, someone would have needed to go back to the drawing board, or the blank page, and started all over again. “Hancock” is only just over ninety minutes long, and it should have been easy enough to make a story cohesive in that short length of time. It never happens here though.

Well, with “Wanted” and “Hancock” appealing mostly to the male demographic, the French movie “Ensemble” is the one that many women are going to be trying to persuade their significant other to see. It is at least a more representative romance movie. It’s also the kind of movie we’re seeing in the American Indy movie scene, a movie about a bunch of quirky individuals, at odds with each other at first, who gradually cohere into a conventional happy ending.

Based on a novel by Anna Gavalda, it’s written and directed by the veteran director Claude Berri, who may be familiar to most viewers through his movies “Manon des Sources and “Jean de Florette”. For me the quirkiness of the characters points a bit too obviously to its novelistic source.

Audrey Tautou plays Camille Fauque a office cleaner who is secretly a talented artist. She drinks too much, eats too little, has a bad relationship with her mother, and never wants to fall in love. After meeting another resident of her building Philibert (Laurent Stocker) she invites him to dinner. He’s a single young man, but he’s also from aristocratic stock and a bit of an old woman, very fussy and prone to stutter whenever he gets excited. When Camille gets sick, Philibert takes her to his apartment to look after her. That upsets Philibert's antisocial roommate, Franck (Guillaume Canet).

Of course, when an odd couple doesn’t get along, in a romantic comedy, we know pretty much exactly how it’s all going to end up.

Franck works twelve hours a day, six days a week, as an up and coming chef. He unwinds by drinking, playing music too loud and inviting casual girlfriends over. His one day off every week is spent with his grandmother, Paulette (Françoise Bertin). She raised him after his mother ran away, and spends most of the movie convalescing after breaking her hip. She lives in fear of being put into a nursing home, and worries about her pets back home.

Philibert is introduced to a theatre group by a woman and works hard to overcome his stutter and put a stage act together. That means he spends a lot of time away from home, and inevitably Franck and Camille begin to spend more time together. Well, this isn’t the kind of movie where dramatic jealousy is going to darken the good mood, so there has to be another escape for Philibert’s character.

Everyone has problems, but none are insurmountable. It’s all very feel-good, and holds no great surprises, but is – I guess – romantic enough for those determined to find some romance at the movies right now. The most disappointing thing is perhaps that it’s all just a bit of a slight confection for a director of Claude Berri’s ability and past triumphs. If no one had told you the extremely well-mounted “Manon des Sources” and “Jean de Florette” were by the same man, nothing you see here would encourage you to guess it.
