It looks like it's time to finally put the rumors to bed and accept that Google Android is almost here. The HTC Dream, billed as the first device to come out of Google Android and the Open Handset Alliance, has been approved by the FCC.

[caption id="attachment_463" align="alignright" width="200" caption="Android"][/caption]

From Yahoo! Tech:

Also known as the G1 and widely expected to be first Android-powered phone, the HTC Dream just won the FCC's nod of approval, and it appears primed and ready to work on T-Mobile's 3G network. Engadget Mobile got its hands on the FCC documentation for the touchscreen Dream (or the G1, depending on who you talk to), which reveals a few schematics and additional details, including word that the phone will boast Wi-Fi connectivity, a "jogball" (which looks similar to the trackball on the latest BlackBerry and Sidekick handsets), and support for T-Mobile's 1700-band WCDMA/3G network.

The FCC documents don't mention anything about Android, Google's much-anticipated mobile platform, but the prevailing wisdom is that the Dream will, indeed, be the first Android-powered phone in the U.S., and could be available for pre-orders as early as next month.

[caption id="attachment_465" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Credit: Engadget"][/caption]

From Wired:

The Federal Communications Commission has approved the first Android-based phone -- but that may not be enough to get the phone on the market by the holidays, observers say.

Last week, bloggers were speculating that T-Mobile could introduce the phone, which is being built by Taiwanese manufacturer HTC, as early as Sept. 17, while the FCC documents suggest a release date closer to Nov. 10. Either way, the introduction would be a significant milestone for the Google-backed Android project, which aims to create an open-source operating system for phones but has not yet produced a commercial product.

But can Google, HTC and T-Mobile really deliver a blockbuster product by then?

Several industry watchers contacted by Wired.com think it is going to be a challenge.

The worst thing Google can do is to rush a “half-baked product,” says Jack Gold, an analyst with J. Gold Associates.

And even Google has recently admitted that the operating system is not ready for prime time.

At the LinuxWorld conference in San Francisco earlier this month, Eric Chu, Google’s mobile platform program manager, said the core operating system was only about 80 percent complete.

That means Google has just days to complete the OS, release a new software developer kit, and get it into the hands of phone manufacturers, especially if it wants to have the phone out in the market in the next two months, says Gold.

From AHN:

T-Mobile Monday confirmed it will introduce a cell phone based on Google's Android software. The carrier, however, did not comment on reports the handset could appear as soon as October.

T-Mobile would become the first U.S. carrier with announced plans to offer a cell phone using the free software from Google.

This is obviously a very exciting time to be in the mobile industry and a mobile consumer. The question now is if Google can actually live up to the hype, and deliver Android to the consumer. Thoughts?

That's it, I am officially addicted to Engadget stories about bad technology. That being said, I love the motion blur some skilled Photoshop artist put on the REDFLY as the demand curve slides ever-lower. One wonders how it doesn't disappear entirely as netbooks such as the Eee PC are getting all of the buzz these days and UMPC's become more and more affordable for the average consumer.

In case you're wondering exactly what the Celio REDFLY is and why Engadget would have been posting this lovely chart... the REDFLY debuted at $500 and for that, all it does is plug into smartphone and make your smartphone a little bit more like a computer, i.e. you get the benefit of having a bigger screen and a full-sized keyboard. You can get a real laptop that runs a real operating system for $500, so most people thought it was pretty much a raw deal that the REDFLY ran on Windows Mobile OS. I label this one... a DUD!!!

Here's a fun, not-completely-original, but still-pretty-neat idea: littleBits. Tiny, pre-assembled circuit boards that create a library of mix-and-match electronic components for building that next amazing wonder widget. Oh, and they're open source. The "blocks" snap together via magnets, and there's an ever-growing selection of modules to choose from. The project is still in its infancy, but we're expecting to see some good work from Joe Hacker Guy on the DIY scene, or anybody else too afraid to pick up a soldering iron, once these arrive at some sort of retail availability. An intro video is after the break.

hope this entry to Thailand design student so we could work our project easier.

A couple weeks ago, YouTube user jube1000 added a video of his disembodied hand demoing a touch screen that he installed on his PSP. A pair of intersecting lines would connect wherever he placed his finger on the screen. Recently, he uploaded two more videos of an on-screen keyboard, similar to that of the iPhone. One video demoed the keyboard with his finger and the other with a stylus. With lots of time and effort, this could make for some riveting homebrew games and applications.

Engadget oggles Addonics' new RAID box today, an awesome tech toy for RAID-to-go. $99.

Interesting comments in the post on how much cooler it would be if it didn't need an external power suppy. That's the trade-off between tinkerable boxes like this and a ready-to-use storage product like Seagate's BlackArmor. Just like home construction projects, the last 10% of "finish" can really make a difference in portable storage.

It all depends on who you are and what you need.

I could see Addonics' Portable Dual Drive enclosure as a great starting point for a kick-butt specialized solution from a system builder.

I love gadget sites like Engadget, Gizmodo and of course our own local Totally Cool Tech. The folks that write for these sites are serious about their technology. Do not try and put one over on them. Check out the picture below, it's from an article on Engadget about Powermat. Looks OK until you read part of the article, below the image.

"That's why we're a little wary of new claims by Israel's Powermat, Ltd. that it's ready to go with tech that'll turn "any surface" into a power source. Well, that, and the PR image they sent us has the iPod charging screen Photoshopped onto every device pictured, including a first-gen RAZR and an N95."

With a bright and shiny pic WIRED's Gadget Lab posts their verdict on the Nokia E71. Wow, people really like this thing. Here's a bit of the juice:

"The E71 looks more like a Blackberry Killer, but don’t be fooled: This great white hope from Finland is a smart device that gives the iPhone a run for its money in a lot of different areas (yes, really).

Despite its obvious lack of an oversized touchscreen interface, Nokia wins points for a remarkably trim profile (10mm vs. 12.3mm), decent 3.2-megapixel camera (instead of 2.0), and the fact it’s not tied to any carrier (yet). Most of all, we’re stoked they avoided the overcrowded iClone bandwagon by sticking to what they do best: gorgeous hardware packed with a satisfying range of fun(ctional) features."

So which one? Reading both is kinda time wasting for me. Currently I'm reading engadget not because it's better but because I never look into both blog networks in detail. Although I put these blogs in the 'timewaste' tab of my netvibes homepage I do admit that sometimes it's quite fun to read them.

Based on my impressions, Engadget is well categorized('sections' at right side of the blog). It has more visitors compared to gizmodo. I always find that Gizmodo has more interesting posts(at least to me). I also heard that gizmodo has more posts(not sure if it's true). I just decided to read gizmodo from now on cause to me the blog is like 'stuff that matters(I don't read slashdot :/) along with some interesting posts'. The same applies to other gawker media blogs. Gawker has some cool blogs i.e. io9, lifehacker, fleshbot(nsfw), gawker, vallegwag, defamer. In contrast, engadget, joystiq and jalopnik tend to have too many PR, industry news which is not really my taste.

I do hope the comments on gizmodo are as nifty and informative as the ones I read on engadget :)

Out of dozens of my rss feeds. I enjoy io9, lifehacker and now gizmodo from gawker media.
