Well as mentioned before we at Kookin have been playing with some of the digital toys out there. This time it is the Behringer BCD3000 that has caught our intention.

The Behringer BCD3000 was released in 2007 and is in the mid-price range for this type of controller. To be honest I am very impressed with it; the build quality is pretty decent, and once you get it up an running with Traktor (dj software) you can whack about the crossfader and knobs and it doesn't feel as if it's about to break!

I'm using the Behringer BCD3000 with Traktor (in my opinion the best dj software out there). I used it initially with a Window XP machine with a celeron processor and 2 gig of ram. I had loads of problems with it jerking and pausing it was unusable, so I went and got a MacBook Pro. God damn it works well, I'm not saying you need to get a top of the range computer to get good use out of it just make sure you have the absolute minimum requirements which my PC didn't have. After running it on a compliant computer I realised how good it was for the money, £145, you can do everything that a normal mixer can do and what I really like is that you can plug your decks into it and mix mp3's and vinyl, I think it adds diversity to your set. I'm still working out how to use it with other apps like cubase and Ableton Live but it looks fairly simple.

Some people will turn there nose up at the Behringer BCD3000 because it's not some big dj brand name like Vestax. If you are looking to try out a mp3 mixer for the first time you don't want to blow £300 on a mp3 mixer to find if you like it or not then the Behringer BCD3000 is for you.

I think it's a great toy and would recommend it to anyone!

I think it looks amazing and if it works would be a great addition to a dj's kit, especially from an entertainment point of view. It would give the crowd something to awe at.

This article follows an original by djtechtools.com one of the best DJ 'toys' sites I have came across in ages.
Basically Ean Golden published an article on how he got Traktor to work with the Oxygen 8 midi USB controller, and was nice enough to give the prog. files away. However PC users were having problems opening them, I managed to get it to work and Ean asked me to publish them for those that are using a PC and midi USB controller.

My friend colin was on the Traktor website looking for Traktor compatible USB midi controllers and he came across this beast!

The OTUS USB DJ controller is pretty special not only because of the way it looks, which is F'n SEXY!, but because you only need one to control 2 channels on Traktor.
I can't yet say if it's any good as it has not been released to the public but I am will travel my ass off to get a shot of one of these. Eks will release the OTUS USB DJ controller to the public in June and it is expected to retail at around £495.00.

So the cartridge came in today! I had class till 5, so it was a nice surprise to walk in to my room and see the box. It took me a while to get things figured out and installed, but I finally got it. I'll admit it's probably not perfectly set up, but I just couldn't wait to hear some vinyl. The first record I put on was a used copy of the Beatles: Blue Album. Now, being a first timer, I was not quite sure what to expect. I was just thrilled when I heard sound coming out of my Sansui speakers! I wasn't sure if the phono inputs on this crappy Kenwood was working. I really need to get a better receiver (if only I had the $$$ for a Marantz!). Anyways, I tweaked the tracking weight a little bit and moved on to Sugarhill Gang -> Blondie -> Pink Floyd -> Black Keys -> Rolling Stones -> JDilla Ruff Draft. I could definitely tell there was something about vinyl that was incredibly different from digital copies. I just can't quite point it out. The music feels more alive... if that makes any sense.

The majority of the records I have are used, but I did buy 4 new ones (Black Keys, The Shins, JDilla Ruff Draft, Beat Konducta vol. 4) and those sound absolutely amazing. Now I need to invest in a record cleaner and clean up these old ones. The condition of the records really play an important part in the playback. At first I thought as long as there were not too many scratches or visible dirt they'd be alright, but some of these used records look spotless, but still have some quality issues. Pink Floyd, which I bought in a thrift store for $1, sounded slightly muddled. Blondie's "Heart of Glass" was sounding very fuzzy.

Anywho, I'm going record shopping this weekend. It's been several months since I hit up the thrift stores, I'm sure there's some goodies out there.

Oh yeah, I guess I should review the cartridge... Since this was my first analog experience I really can't compare it to anything. However, I did some extensive research and a lot of people recommended the Shure M97xE and it also great reviews, and it fit my budget $65 shipped from Amazon. Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with it. I am fairly certain the discrepancies I'm hearing are due to dirty records and not the actual cartridge. I also still need to tweak it and let it "burn" in. Also, the packaging was very nice/nifty. It came in a small aluminum box that included a cleaning brush, screwdriver, screws/nuts, and a alignment protractor.
