Na hora do almoço, Swayze e a mulher, Lisa Niemi, comeram juntos no camarim do ator, decorado para a ocasião pela equipe da série.

It's the summer of 1963, and Baby and Johnny, two fiercely independent young spirits from different worlds, come together in what will be the most challenging and triumphant summer of their lives. That's the story of Dirty Dancing, the legendary entertainment phenomenon that began as a smash-hit film. After successful engagements in Europe, Australia and Canada, a new stage production based on the film is set to begin a Broadway-bound US tour.

Retitled Dirty Dancing - The Classic Story On Stage, the show features 35 hit songs, including "Hungry Eyes," "Hey Baby," "Do You Love Me?" and the Oscar-winning "(I've Had) The Time of My Life." Performances begin in Chicago on September 28 with engagements in Boston and Los Angeles to follow in 2009.

Eleanor Bergstein, Dirty Dancing's original screenwriter, has completely re-envisioned the film for the stage. She recently responded to our questions by e-mail.

Q: What was your starting point when you set out to re-conceive this hit movie musical as a stage production?

Eleanor Bergstein: I wanted to find a way to transform it into a new kind of theatrical event. One that would honor my great respect for the American musical--though this is more a play-with-a-lot-of-music than a traditional musical. I wanted a form that would honor our open-hearted audience. And one that might bring into the theatre a new audience that has had its most profound experiences at movies and rock concerts. To make them understand that live theatre is the best performance experience of all.

As a writer and producer, what were your main goals when you began?

Once again, to honor the audience, and then to find things one cannot do in the movies. The screen is flat, the stage is deep. Magic Hour (dawn, dusk) goes on forever. You can get realer than real time. Time that speaks to how long it seems in your heart.

I had no desire to slap the movie onstage; rather to draw the audience through the flat screen into a different form of experience. A real log that people dance on is realer in a theatre than in a movie. A dance lift in real time is realer than one onscreen. We try to take advantage of this. Sometimes seriously, sometimes playfully.

How close do you stay to the story and music of the original film? What are some of the new elements audiences will experience when they see this show on stage?

Almost everything in the movie is in the show--but much more. There are more scenes, more Baby and Johnny scenes exploring their relationship, more scenes about the parents, more about Neil. The action is set more firmly in the summer of 1963, the summer of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech. What was happening in the world was so integral to what was happening to our people. And there is lots more dancing.

The music is largely live, with a few scratchy iconic records thrown in. We use music the way people use music in real life. It's what happens to them. Our live musicians play cha chas upstairs at Kellerman's, throw off their tuxedo jackets and bring their instruments downstairs and rock with the kids to a live "Do You Love Me," etc.

Filmul care îmi aduce mie cea mai mare bucurie este Dirty Dancing. Poate că e muzica, poate că e dansul, poate că sunt personajele, poate că sunt replicile sau poate câte puţin din fiecare. Cert este că m-am uitat şi încă mă mai uit la el de multe ori (who counts these things?) uneori la tot, alteori doar la secvenţe. Ştiu replici întregi pe de rost şi mă amuză sau mă emoţionează de fiecare dată. Una dintre secvenţele mele favorite este cea în care Baby face cunoştinţă cu Johnny şi zice faimoasa replică genială şi cuceritoare "I carried a watermelon" :D De câte ori mă uit mi se face poftă de pepene şi de câte ori mănânc pepene mi se face poftă să mă mai uit doar un pic la Dirty Dancing.  :)

CHICAGO (August 4, 2008) - Producer Jacobsen Entertainment, in association with Lionsgate and Magic Hour Productions, of the international hit Dirty Dancing - The Classic Story On Stage is pleased to announce full casting for the upcoming pre-Broadway U.S. premiere.  Rehearsals are now underway in Chicago where performances will begin on September 28 at the Cadillac Palace Theatre.

As previously announced Amanda Leigh Cobb will play Frances ‘Baby' Houseman and Josef Brown will re-create the role of Johnny Castle Baby's headstrong love interest. Mr. Brown previously played Johnny in London and Australian productions of Dirty Dancing.  Chicago's own Britta Lazenga - member of the Joffrey Ballet - will return home direct from the Toronto production in the role of Penny Johnson. Ben Mingay reprises his role as Billy.  Previously he has played the role in Australia, London and Toronto. They are joined by John Bolger as Baby's father Dr. Jake Houseman, Kaitlin Hopkins as her mother Marjorie, and Katlyn Carlson as Baby's sister Lisa.

Rounding out the cast of 39 are Molly C. I have seen so many interviews that Patrick Swayze has done with Jennifer Grey and they have both always said that they would be open to it if the same people from the first film were involved.  So I am not sure if this is a rumor or if this could happen.  Dirty Dancing 2?

Do we really need a sequel to Dirty Dancing?  I could honestly say that growing up that was one of my favorite movies and enjoyed watching it until the VHS tape broke!  But I don't think we need to re-visit with Baby and Johnny!  What would they do?  Baby and Johnnie go to a nursing home?  It was re-made already in Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights with Patrick playing a cameo as a dance instructor!

In good Patrick Swayze news, the 55 year old's health is improving greatly since being diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in late January 2008.  It is believed that he got pancreatic cancer from smoking up to 3 packs a day which Wiki claims he is still doing even after undergoing chemotherapy.  I hope this isn't true!

Last week, Swayze spoke of his recovery, saying: "I'm doing really well. I feel really good. I've put on 20lbs. I should be dead right now. Look at me - I'm a miracle."

I'm trying to stay positive in this confusing season of my life. Trying to stay open, both spiritually and practically, to the possibilities that come with big changes on so many fronts. (For example, a new job for my wife, at a new school, and a new church we're trying out -- both of which had been the "same old thing" for about twenty years up till this spring... also, I'm unemployed, but that's nothing new). 

It can be hard work to stay open and hopeful, to believe in oneself and take the risk of building new relationships. Meanwhile, the strain is starting to show, in how I feel physically and what I do to avoid that hard work. I'm eating all wrong. I'm indulging in some bad habits. All to deflect that risk and hard work. I'm like a cross between Amy Winehouse and Homer Simpson. I have to be careful, and yet at the same time throw caution to the wind in order to embrace what's next and maybe make a big splash as a someone ready to take big risks.

Remember that line from Field of Dreams?  "If you build it, they will come."  It's that  kind of openness I'm cultivating, but without all the New Age/Celestine Prophecy/The Secret sort of mumbo-jumbo and wish-fulfillment fantasy that often gets sold to us in America along with  that style of openness.

The main difference between me and Kevin Costner (aside from my being better-looking, of course) is that I still believe Jesus and His Spirit are at the root of these small tectonic shifts in my career and personal life. Along with a mild case of existential dread, I have a classic case of Hope. But it is not a hope that chases after something so vague, mysterious and downright weird as a whispering voice, a large black man that sounds like Darth Vader, and the ghost of Shoeless Joe Jackson. No. In contrast to Costner's fuzzy but determined hope, mine is a focused sort of hope. If, on the other hand, I were to just open myself like a sewer drain in a rainstorm --with no discrimination or good sense, without engaging my brain along with my seeking spirit-- then who knows what brand and volume of shit might be allowed to flow into that drain, along with the stuff that nourishes a person.

Ultimately, there's got to be a sorting. A system. A method to the madness, or else we'd just go mad from all the competing choices and voices and challenges we are barraged with daily, whether we're conscious of them or not.

This is the role of religion in the post-modern era. It's a filter, a trustworthy algorithm, so that when we do our inevitable God Google --our search for love, meaning, satisfaction and inner peace-- we don't have to try out all kinds of random (but perhaps temporarily fascinating!) crap that only leads to pain, or at least further away from our ultimate goal: joy.

As a Christian, pursuing but not entirely bound by a system that theologians would call "orthodox", I also believe that to always and only follow one's heart can be dangerous -- if in fact your heart is a little broken, which mine clearly is.

This is the essence of sin at its core: a beautiful but broken and childlike heart, wrestling with God and/or The Mystery. We push away God and Man, then maybe change our minds... and back and forth we go, in a complex and sometimes sick little dance. We reach out, we connect for a time, then because we can't ever feel permanently or completely satisfied in such a broken and toxic world (there's that existential dread again...), we stop dancing and start moping, or drinking, or screaming, or bombing. When other people prove themselves to be sick and confused as well, we grab hold of a grudge (or two, or hundreds), let it take up residence in our soul, then limp on in fear and frustration.

In more extreme cases we lash out, to hurt ourselves or the other person, both of whom we once believed were better than this. (Both = me and her, or me and him --whether it's dad, wife, friend, mom, co-worker, sister, lover, child, brother, president. Any stand-in for God will do in a crisis, or at a crossroads.)  We throw tantrums, we throw pots and pans, we blame each other, then either walk out or beg for forgiveness, afraid we'll be abandoned for our foolishness.

We all do the dance, don't we? Now and then, at least.  We may know God intimately, or just nod to Him/Her/Them from a distance on occasion. We may even throw pots at Him, in the form of willfull ignorance, pride or humanistic/scientific denials, all of which are usually laid over some deep-seated anger -- anger that He/She/They refuse to just show themselves unequivocally, give us a big hug, and Explain It All. 

We play out the drama of our search for that eternal and perfect Parent/Lover with many of the ordinary, innocent, unsuspecting people in our lives. We want only love and acceptance, and to give the same, and yet we are unsure what to do with the Big Love once we have it. It's either that or else we don't know, or forget, that we already have the Big Love, always, for in Him we "live, and breath, and have our being". This, too, is the nature of our sinful separation from God -- to be always on the verge, but never arriving (this side of heaven, at least).

Often we make excuses, or try to distract ourselves from that date to dance with God, to practice the steps. The dance itself is usually done by serving and relating to other people, whom he has commanded us to love despite their flaws, and whether or not they know the dance steps . When you boil it all down, to love is the only command God ever gives.

And yet we duck that love. We avoid the work, like the spiritual toddlers that we are. What work? The hard work of real cooperation and real honesty and real forgiveness, the giving and receiving of which is the only way to conquer the cycle of sin and to stop hurting each other so much. Sometimes we are driven in our brokenness to replace that seeking of love (which we doubt will come anyway, and stay, and be steady, and satisfy) with the seeking of substitutes: money, attention, sex, social importance, physical thrills (the list goes on, of course).

In my case, I have identified certain compulsions as my avenues of denial and distraction. Television and movies. Sexual fantasies. Food. Alcohol. Writing sollipsistic, self-indulgent blogs and essays, in an effort to purge "the demon". Of course, identifying these habits is not always the same as stopping the behaviors. But it's the important first step. Or at least one of the first.

So how many steps to peace and health and Abundant Life are there? Ten, like the commandments? Twelve, like in A.A.? Twelve thousand? Four, like the four basic truths underlying Buddhism? I don't pretend to know anymore. Yet until I see evidence to the contrary (and trust me, I've looked) I gotta believe that those things Jesus said about dying to oneself and living for others is the way to peace and abundant life. So I guess I'm in training for that. I just want to be ready to go when it's "go time".

In this place, at this time, because I'm trying to be both hopeful and realistic, I have to live in a place of tension. I can't escape the sense of something big just around the corner. But I can't force it to happen, either, because I'm not the builder. I'm the instrument. One of many, in fact. And if He builds it, it will come. Whatever "it" is.

Step Up 2...I loved the original Step Up, and I knew that the sequel would be, well, ick...

Turned out the script is kinda cheesy, but the dancers can freaking dance! And hip hop, I love watching it ever since Chris Kim from Glenbrook South performed a helicopter in the annual variety show...I am always in awe...and if you can't get through dance movies, let me save you the trouble and go straight to the last dance sequence...hip hop, street-style in the rain. It was gorgeous and hard-hitting...the dancing was AMAZING, choreography that will blow your mind, and by the time the final scene ends (a little abruptly, I might add), you are just like me....staring blankly at the screen in total awe. FABULOUSO...I might just buy the DVD for that scene alone.  Found out that the main actress (who did have that "it" factor, although she looks like Sophia Bush, which isnt a bad thing!) was trained by Shane Sparks...who I LOVE!  Gotta love people who can dance (and sort of act...)

I love dance movies because I think dance is the one thing that is universal...everyone (even the left foot ones) can move to a beat.

And that got me thinking...what are people's favorite movie dance moments? 

Here's mine: Centerstage finale...Dirty Dancing (of course) finale...and possibly Step Up 2...

(I swear I will get off this dance kick, but I am currently obsessed...although I have noticed a surge of dancing in the media...SYTYCD and Dancing with the Stars, etc...but now even Target's ads for college dormwear is featuring choreography...go figure.)
