The Reds legend Ron Yeats- who Bill Shankly famously called his 'Colossus' - admits he had reservations about Skrtel following the defender's debut against Havant & Waterlooville in the FA Cup; but he is now a keen admirer of the 23-year-old and feels he can go on to have a big future on Merseyside.

"I go to all the home games and after watching his debut I wasn't very impressed," Yeats told LFC TV.

"When I say I wasn't impressed I mean, I thought he was a bag of nerves. But I thought he must have something about him.

"In the games that followed he showed that he was very good player. He's got a bit of pace and boy can he tackle and head the ball.

"That's what you want from a centre back. I think he's only 23 and with him Agger, Carragher and the boy Hobbs, we are well endowed with centre backs.

"And of course there's Sami Hyypia. He's my favourite player I must admit. I went twice to see him and then I recommended him because I thought he was something else.

"He doesn't have a lot of pace, he'll tell you that, but he can read the game. He's a super passer of the ball too."

Yeats feels Hyypia's experience and sheer professionalism will provide the likes of Skrtel with the perfect example to follow in terms of how to conduct themselves, both, on and off the pitch.

"Sami is a talker and a leader and I think you have to have that because football is made up of partnerships," he said.

"If you don't have that then you have no chance. Sami will talk players through where they need to be and where they shouldn't be and I think Skrtel, and the others I have mentioned, will benefit from that."

One player likely to leave Anfield in the near future, however, is [Alvaro] Arbeloa, who is understood to want a return to his homeland for personal reasons.

Liverpool should have no problems in cashing in on the defender, whose stock is at an all-time high following his part in helping Spain win the European Championships last month. (Liverpool Daily Post)

Arbeloa wants to leave? Is it because of Degen coming in? Is it because he wants to go back to Spain? Is it because he thinks Liverpool won't mount any serious challenges?

With today's E3 kickoff, there have been major announcements about Gears of War 2. The newest multiplayer mode is called "Horde". It is basically a 5 player co-op mode that pits 5 players against hordes of locust enemies. There have been no indications whether it will be kill based (a survival mode with no time limit) or time based (similar to the 60 minute defender mode in Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2). I could see the defender mode being more replayable in the longer run but maybe there will be a twist with a timeless mode. Also, I applaud anybody that could survive the waves of enemies in GRAW 2 (I could only get through 14 minutes and that was with 8 players).

Everyone loves goals! Goals, goals, goals baby… But the beautiful game is about so much more. Although I’m pretty sure that everyone at DSOTB will openly admit that their favourite ever moment of football has been goal related (my personal most delectable moment was that sublime Gazza goal against the Scots in Euro 96) who can deny that a fuck-off tackle, with full-on venomous power and passion can be just so satisfying to watch.

Getting the ball is not enough… This is war! The big elbow crunching the swift winger who’s been running rings around a big centre back all day right into the stands. Or the big foot following through the ball and *smash* into the man.

Therefore, although we may feature the odd goal on DSOTB, we don’t really want to compete with the best in the business. After all, if you want awesome strike after strike – then you’re best off heading to our pals on 101greatgoals.com! We’re going to take a look at some of the best tackles in the business… And we’re starting with ex Luton Town defender Sol Davis – one of the lower league’s most controversial defenders.

Just take a look at this big ol’ challenge on Ricardo Fuller. Approaching at a pace akin to a free-wheeling HGV careening through an oil slick, Sol puts the lacklustre Fuller into the stands, and promptly gets red-carded for his troubles – and not for the first time in his illustrious career either (more Sol to follow over the next few weeks).

This tackle has really divided us all in DSOTB HQ though – is it really a sending off? Because although Davis put in perhaps the biggest tackle that I’ve ever seen, he certainly gets the ball! What do you think?

Dejan Stefanovic could be moving on from Fulham this summer after just one disappointing season at the club.

The 33 year-old Serbian centre-half signed from Portsmouth on deadline day last season, but after some luck lustre performances it looks as though he is set to leave Craven Cottage.

Norwich are in the market for a new centre-back and may see experienced Stefanovic as a decent option.

Stefanovic's agent, Phil Smith, admitted there has been "some discussion" with the championship side, but also added that "there is nothing that has gone further down the line. It's an idea at the moment".

I'm sure Stefanovic will be keen to move on after only 15 first-team appearances last term, and having not featured in the line-up since January.

Danish center back Daniel Agger played his first game for Liverpool after being on the sidelines for 10 months due to a metatarsal injury against Tranmere Rovers in a pre-season friendly which ended 1-0 thanks to a Yossi Benayoun volley.

The 23-year-old had been frustrated after missing most of last season, and now needs to impress Rafa Benitez to get into the first team, after Martin Skrtel took his place in the team, and it looks unlikely he would be dropped.

However, the commanding defender says he is ready for the Premier League, and wants to mount a serious title challenge next season.

He said: “I am delighted to be back, this has been the most frustrating time of my career, I have just had to look forward, concentrate, and work hard to get myself back to fitness.

“This season ahead is now all-important to me. I have missed so much football over the past year that I feel I am almost starting my career at Liverpool all over again.

“Now I am really focused on this season, I am ready. I have been working hard right through the summer to get myself fit for this level of football.” he added.

Justin Hoyte has ruled out a potential move to Aston Villa because he remains in the plans of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger for next season.

The 23-year-old started only two Premier League games last season and has been linked with a number of moves, most frequently to Villa Park.

“There are rumours every day but I am contracted to Arsenal,” said Hoyte.

“The boss has said great things about me, has good plans for me and I need to show him what I am capable of.”

It is understood Arsenal recently rejected a bid from Aston Villa for the England Under-21 international, who has attracted plenty of interest in the loan market.

Arséne Wenger was praising the versatile defender in early January and firmly believes that Hoyte has a big future at the Emirates.

Wenger said:

"Justin is a player that has improved tremendously.

"I have big respect for Justin because he is a player that does not talk too much, but every time I play him he is quality.

"Technically he is very good - but as well he is very versatile and quick on the turn which is a great quality for a centre-back.

"He is good in the air even if he is small and overall I refuse categorically to give him up."

Hoyte has been with Arsenal since he was 11 years old, making his way up through the academy, youth and reserve teams, a massive Gooner himself, the Londoner will be looking to challenge Bacary Sagna for the right back spot next season.

The seat belts were fraying after catching in the door latches

[wp_caption id="attachment_3016" align="aligncenter" width="400" caption="The seat belts were fraying after catching in the door latches"][/wp_caption]

One thing is certain about crofting, and indeed farming.

Every time you find yourself inching ahead, you know you're about to get booted back to your starting point—or beyond.

Today provided ample proof of that maxim.

I've been working on the Land Rover to get it ready for its MoT inspection, but as I'm not a mechanic we get the blokes at our local garage to give it the once over and let me know if I've missed anything.

On her way to work, the Other Half took the Land Rover in this morning and expected to get a list, hopefully short, of work that remained to be done before the inspection.

But when she returned to the garage this afternoon, the mechanic grinned and handed her a new MoT certificate.

All the Land Rover had needed was a new nearside headlamp bulb (yes, another bulb failure since I checked them and replaced a few las tweek), so the garage had put the car through the MoT and it had passed.

It even breezed through the smoke test.

So when the Other Half arrived home, we were both feeling quite good.

We'd saved £500 over the past year to go towards work for the MoT, the MoT itself and the car tax.

We'd spent:

£78.94 on new seat belts (the front ones were frayed after being caught in the door latches)

£20.28 on new mud flaps (one was hanging off and the other was about to go

£7.50 on new bulbs (excluding the headlamp)

£100.23 with the mechanics (two hours work is not cheap)

£40 on the MoT

£185 on car tax

All up, £431.95.

We'd come in £68.05 under budget, but our pleasure at being "flush" with cash lasted about 30 minutes.

...lose a little

[wp_caption id="attachment_3017" align="aligncenter" width="400" caption="The Wee "][/wp_caption]

The Other Half had arrived home just as I was starting the evening chores so she told me the good news about the car while I fed and watered the chickens, moved the older chicks to their night quarters, checked the latest batch of newly hatched chicks, and fed Dolores, one of our Berkshire sows, in the byre.

I then measured our the feed for Doris and her litter before the OH and I went out to the field to feed them.

As I was banging the bucket on the gate to their pen, I noticed one of the piglets had not joined the others in racing over to see what was happening.

It seem to be alert as its head was poking up out of Doris's wallow, but I grew concerned when it remained utterly still despite all the mayhem—there wasn't even a twitch from its ears.

I gave the feed bucket to the Other Half so I could go in and have a good look without Doris pestering me for her dinner.

As I walked closer, I could now see that the piglet's body had been pushed deep into the mud, with only its head sticking up.

It was clearly dead and it was equally clear it had been rolled on.

While I have no problems losing piglets in the first three days after farrowing—most live, a few die and that's the way it is—it's hard losing a big, healthy and thriving piglet to crushing at 19 days.

It's even worse for the Other Half. She finds it difficult enough when piglets die early, so it's extremely difficult when they die after their characters have started to come through.

I retrieved the piglet, fed Doris and the other pigs, and then brought the carcass down to the steading to tell the boys.

Like me, the boys are quite pragmatic about slaughtering pigs to be eaten, about losing piglets just after they've been farrowed, and even when they have to be put down due to illness.

But, they too find it difficult when a piglet they know is alive one minute and dead the next.

The Big Lad had to go off and have some space to himself, while the Wee 'Un sat and chatted with the dead piglet for a while.

Half an hour later and they were both off playing again, although a little more subdued than earlier.

Meanwhile, I'd had to ring a buyer who'd phoned me two hours earlier to say he'd be taking all three gilts from this litter to tell him that it would now be two.

And that's the other hit for us.

While we need 10 piglets per litter to break even, that assumes few losses as disposing of the carcasses is very expensive at £11.75 per piglet.

We've now lost four piglets from this litter and while the first two were within expectations/costs, the other two were not.

It means we've not only lost £120 (two piglets at £60) but we've incurred an extra £23.50 in disposal costs (over what we'd budgeted for expected losses).

It might not sound much, but it's a big hit for us. I've just spent £150 on straw and the two piglets we lost late should have covered most of that cost.

I'll have to divert £23.50 from the money we saved on the car to pay the additional knacker's costs, put the remaining £44.55 towards the straw, and find £105.45 to pay for the rest of the straw.

And we still have the gap left by Stripe's death. Each litter develops its own collective personality and this one was a particularly "happily boingy" group that will be lessened with the death of one its more lively piglets.

As I always tell would-be crofters, smallholders and hobby farmers, only do it if you're absolutely certain your dreams can survive the onslaught of reality. It bites—hard.

After our TV appearance in Durham, we drove up to Weardale Outdoor for some tuition and to meet up with Land Rover Owner International Magazine. The location is beautiful, atop the fell with sweeping views of the surrounding hills.

Excitingly, it was also the first chance I'd had to drive the Defender 110 (or any Land Rover for that matter).

All four of us received half an hour or so's instruction, learning how to climb and descend rough terrain, use the low ratio gearbox and the locking differential. Most of the day was spent in the quarry area on top of the fell, scrabbling up and down the rocky terrain. Hopefully, it was more extreme than just about anything we'll encounter on the trip, safe in the knowledge both we and the car conquered all!

The Defender (or "Bertie the Beast" as its known within the team!) performed admirably, though overly hard tyres made grip occasionally hard to come by, as did the very new and still hard suspension. Still, besides crashing the differential on a rock as I lumbered up and over some rocks for some cross axle photo opportunities, all was good.

The car didn't quite escape the off road terrain without noticeable injury. Our free roof rack decided it wasn't quite up to the job, with one, then two and eventually the third support giving way before we arrived back at base. Better for it to pack in then, rather than in Azerbaijan or later though! Durham 4 Wheel Drive have done a bit of welding since and it s reattached and looking much stronger, so fingers crossed it'll hold out the next 10,000 miles.

The rest of the day was spent with Mark and Tom from Land Rover Owner International Magazine, doing a series of action shots and stills to appear in a feature in a forthcoming issue, being interviewed and generally having a bit of a play with Land Rovers on the off road terrain.

We've got the Defender back from Durham 4 Wheel Drive after plenty of attention from Bert and his team. We've got new suspension fitted (and raised the vehicle 3 inches), guards on the underside, roof rack, rear windows and rear seats, new tyres and wheels and a whole host of other bits and pieces I'm not yet aware of! A full update will follow after I've been to catch up with the guys in Durham - with a more detailed piece appearing in a forthcoming edition of Land Rover Owner International Magazine.

Until then, here's a photo to whet your appetite:

With the Land Rover Defender due for its MoT next month I took a day off crofting work to get some more fettling done, focusing on the electrics, chassis and door sills.

I tackled the filthiest job first—crawling in, around and under the chassis with the pressure washer, blasting off a couple of months of greasy crud plus the remains of last year's underseal to reveal quite a few patches of surface rust but nothing serious.

Just to be sure, though, I worked my way around the chassis with a peening hammer, giving it a good belt every few inches to check for weak spots.

None of the metal gave way so the Waxoyl I sprayed inside the chassis plus the paint and Waxoyl on the outside have kept the rust at bay for another year.

I now need to go over the chassis with the angle grinder and wire brushes to prepare it for a fresh coat of paint, but that's a job for another day when the chassis and ground are dry.

Next up, I sanded back the primer on the front passenger door sill and brushed on a coat of red paint. I'll sand that back tomorrow and do another coat of red, probably doing three coats in all.

The colour might not be a close match to Land Rover red, but it looks a lot better and is much safer than the rusted spikes of metal that were masquerading as a sill until last month.

Then it was the turn of the electrics.

Land Rovers tend to eat light bulbs with gusto and ours is no exception.

I had to replace bulbs in the left indicator repeater, the number plate light and the right side light. (And I really should replace the lense for the latter as it's pitted and dark with dirt that I can't get off).

By now, I was running out of time as I had to take the boys to football but I had one job left that I really wanted to get out of the way.

The standard horn on Defenders is a round "parp, parp" weakling that sits in front of the intercooler on diesels like our 200TDi, but someone had replaced ours with two-tone airhorns at some point.

It's a good idea in theory, but in practice? The installation was a complete and utter bodge-up that had failed utterly in the past couple of days.

The Other Half had tried to sound the horn at another driver yesterday but nothing happened, while I'd noticed this morning that there was a new thumping and bumping sound emerging from the left-front wing.

Investigation revealed the air horns had come adrift from their mounting (no lock washers or Nyloc nuts), the mounting had come adrift from the inner wheel arch (no lock washer again), the live wire had come adrift from the connector on the horn body (a bare wire had been twisted around the terminal), and the auxiliary fuse had blown (thanks to that live wire thrashing about).

I removed the horn completely, dug out a selection of 13mm bolts, nuts and lock washers, rummaged through my electrical spares for new wires, terminals, connectors and a 20A fuse, and set to work.

I made up a new power cable as well as a new lead to connect the terminals on the two horns together, then fitted those to the horns and popped the new fuse into the fuse box.

I earthed the horns and had the Big Lad press the horn button on the indicator stalk—"BORP BORP BORP!!!"

Ears ringing, I concluded the horns were indeed working now.

Disconnecting the battery again (did I mention that you should disconnect the battery before playing with electrics?), I was about to put everything back together when I noticed the time.

We only had 15 minutes to go before the boys were due at football so I sent them in to change while I went into Grand Prix mechanic mode.

The horns on our Defender had been mounted inside the wing, just above and to one side of the headlamp.

It's a confined space with limited spanner room, a profusion of cabling and poor earthing. Not good when you're short of time.

I decided to cheat. I unbolted the forward-most mount for the air filter, slipped the mounting bracket for the horns under that and tried it for fit.

It worked.

Not only did I now have more spanner room and a much better earth, but the horns were now facing into the engine bay towards the radiator and intercooler, allowing the sound to escape more effectively. Before, they'd been facing into metal with about half an inch clearance.

I whacked a bit of copper grease onto a new bolt, dropped it through the air filter mounting bracket, the horn bracket and the wing, whacked on a lock washer and nut, and tightened it securely.

The horns went onto the bracket next and as I was tightening the final nut, the boys came rocketing out of the house.

As they fastened themselves into their seats, I reconnected the power supply to the horns, reconnected the battery, made sure I'd left nothing under the bonnet and started the engine.

No problems there and the horn sounded a resounding "BORP BORP BORP!!!" again when tested.

I checked the boys' seatbelts, bundled all my tools to one side, pulled the hoses and pressure washer out of the way, and jumped into the driver's seat.

Reversing up the drive to the road, I stopped, did a quick walk around to ensure I'd missing nothing or left any tools in odd spots, and then headed for football.

We made it with a minute to spare (and without speeding I might add!).

Later, the Other Half gave a most satisfactory jump when I tested the horn as she walked in front of the Land Rover.

"Feeling horny, dear?"
