Aquí os dejo el cd que compila el primer concierto dado por esta allstar-band formada por gente de Opeth, Katatonia y por el productor y compositor Dan Swano. El concierto fue grabado durante el festival Wacken Open Air 2005 y es todo un catálogo de como debe de sonar una auténtica banda de Death metal sobre un escenario. Con un Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth) pletórico a las voces y un acompañamiento de lujo  (Martin Axenrot, también en Opeth, Anders Nyström y Jonas Renkse de Katatonia y el citado Dan Swanö) es un documento sonoro que todos los amantes de la música extrema deberían disfrutar.

Aurum and A Decade of Thoughts 1996-2006 kick some heavy butt in death metal that entirely, and unashamedly glorifies the Lord Jesus Christ. They have a good level of guitar work and the chords are pounding and thunderous for most of the time. The pace varies well within songs as well as between songs. It has been a pleasure to sample some of their music.

In line with other posts, Pantokrator come from Sweden, so to this blogger, there is little surprise why they are so good. There is not a lot of information out there about them, but they are definitely hard hitting Christians with some mystical elements creeping through in their music.

These guys are definitely worth looking into for some seriously vicious music centred on Jesus Christ. I really like their sounds and style. It is a good style, and they have interpretted in a very basic way that seems to work well for them.

Esta canción pertenece al disco "Sacrament" de 2006, uno de los 10 mejores discos de ese año según los votantes de Internet. Desde mi punto de vista esta banda roza técnicamente la perfección y cuenta con uno de los bateristas más innovadores y técnicos del panorama heavy actual pero el estilo musical de la banda no es precisamente mi devoción.

De todas formas, si te gusta admirar la complejidad instrumental a la par que te tomas una buena dosis de tralla pues aquí te dejo el vídeo. Vamooooooooooooooooos!

Bandene jeg har hørt mest på, er som følger:

Pestilence
Et old school DM band som begynte sine dager i 1986, i Nederland. De startet som et streit Thrash Metal band, og etter 2 demoer, fanget de oppmerksomheten til det nå velkjente merket Roadrunner Records. Deres første skive "Malleus Maleficarum" videreførte det de hadde begynt med, nemlig Thrash Metal. Deres neste album, som etter min mening er deres beste, driver mer mot et DM sound. Et fantastisk album, som jeg ville satt opp mot alle andre DM skiver nå til dags, og grust dem med det. Det er helt fantastisk! Denne skiva gjorde også at de fikk anerkjennelse rundt om, og fikk det man kaller et gjennombrudd. Etter dette gav de ut skiva "Testimony of the Ancients" som på alle måter klarte å videreføre suksessen de hadde hatt med Consuming Death. Nå begynte deres musikalske evner å gro, og med dette kom mer jazz inspirerte toner inni bildet. Med et mer raffinert, men allikevel brutalt sound, gav de ut skiva "Spheres" som kom ut i 1993. Dette ble uheldigvis deres siste skive, før en lang periode med splittelser og krangler begynte. De splittet, men i 2008 gikk nyheter rundt om, at Pestilence hadde kommet sammen igjen, og planlagte ei ny skive. Den ryktes å komme ut i 2009. Vi får bare håpe, men til da koser vi oss med noen gamle toner!

Det neste bandet jeg skal skrive litt om, er et UTROLIG fett technical DM band fra Sverige. Sverige er kjent for sin mainstream metal i In Flames, Soilwork, Dark Tranquility, Arch Enemy osv. osv. Listen går og går. Men Spawn Of Possession representerer det som er av kvalitet ifra Sverige. Med sitt brutale, men også uhyre tekniske sound, kan de skremme enhver mann som tørr å la seg tilfredsstille av deres toner. De startet sin karriere i 1997. De har siden da gitt ut 2 demoer, og 2 skiver. Demoen "Church Of Deviance" er noe av det råeste man kan høre av Tech DM idag. Helt genialt. Både "Cabinet" og "Noctambulant" er det man kan kalle mesterverk! Genialt, rett og slett!

Det siste bandet jeg skal skrive litt om er det man kan kalle et legendarisk band innenfor det man idag kaller Old School DM. Med mesterhjernen Chuck Schuldiner bak rattet, har de gitt ut mesterverk som "Symbolic", "Human" og "Scream Bloody Gore". Alle skivene viser det som en gang var en gigant innenfor sjangeren. Uheldigvis, måtte Chuck gi tapt for en hard kamp mot både hjernesvulst og lungebetennelse, og etter det gikk medlemmene hver sin vei. De fleste kjenner vell den geniale trommisen Gene Hogaln fra både Strapping Young Lad og Devin Townsend Band. Death fostret mange utrolige musikere, og det vises i musikken. Måtte Chuck's og bandets minne leve videre i den geniale musikken de engang lagde.

I love to read, write and listen to extreme metal (among other things). Beyond that I love BBQ and beer. Typical, right? Wrong! I happen to love Lone Star & Shiner beers, both of which are brewed in Texas. Lone Star is my favorite "cheap" beer--screw Pabst--but you will find no finer beer than Shiner's Hefeweizen (I am also partial to Shiner Blonde). I discovered Shiner, a much smaller brewery, strangely, before Lone Star, which happens to be "The National Beer of Texas." Shiner is brewed in Shiner, Texas at the K. Spoetzl Brewery. I have never been on a brewery tour before, and told myself that I ever did make it to Texas, by hook or crook/hell or high water, I would visit the Shiner brewery. I have dreamed of visiting Shiner for years...

Several months ago Nancee and I were watching a Travel Channel show highlighting "Bastions of Barbeque." From North Carolina and Tennessee through Texas and Arkansas all the way out to San Francisco! the narrator told of these legendary "Meccas of Meat" that locals all praised in one fashion or another [Note: The restaurant in San Francisco was owned/operated by a couple from Alabama who knew what REAL sweet tea was as well as the importance of rib-sticking mac-n-cheese for a side dish.]. Every bastion visited featured several vignettes appropriate for the art of good BBQing: the type of smoking pit, preparation, proper temperature, the type of wood used, rub or no rub and possibly the most important: sauce or no sauce, which in many cases featured "secret" ingredients or was a family (read "secret" again) recipe handed down through the generations.

Now Nancee & I are spoiled. 30 minutes to the south of Athens lies Madison, Georgia. And in Madison is Crowe's BBQ. Crowe's BBQ is run by Mr. Crowe who happens to be the cousin of one of my college friends. I have eaten BBQ in Virginia, North & South Carolina, Florida, Alabama (Dreamland in Tuscaloosa), Mississippi, Louisiana and Florida. And while I love Dreamland's BBQ, no one, I repeat, NO ONE, has better BBQ than Crowe's BBQ. (Crowe's does not have a website so do not bother looking for it on the Internet. But if you ever find yourself in Georgia and wanting some of the most excellent BBQ you have ever put in your mouth then you should seek out Crowe's.) Sauce or no sauce, Mr. Crowe's BBQ has a perfect balance of flavor and smokiness. His BBQ is CONSISTENTLY moist and pulls right off the bone (if you eat ribs like I do then you know that this is an all-important gauge much like a moonshiner inspecting "the bead."). Frankly, I'm salivating right now just thinking about his pork ribs and I'm sitting in a hotel in San Antonio!

As most BBQ enthusiasts know BBQ is different depending upon the region in which it is cooked. Same goes for the base that comprises the sauce. Pepper, vinegar or mustard base are the fingerprints that tell of a BBQ sauce's origins. Beyond sauces we cannot forget the "dry rub", which is popular in Memphis, St. Louis and in some parts of Texas. Dry rub is a meat rub, or seasoning, generally featuring a salt and pepper base with additional spices and/or herbs for flavor. The varieties are as varied and unique as those that create them. Meat-wise, in the southeast BBQ mostly consists of pork BBQ. In Texas, they have pork, but the Travel Channel narrators also told of the sausage and beef brisket, which comes either lean or moist (marbled). With a devilish look in my eye I asked Nancee what she thought about going to Texas to search out these places. She agreed that that might be fun.

Several weeks later, I learned that Swedens' At The Gates was playing three shows in Texas one of which was to take place in San Antonio. These shows were the closest they were coming to Georgia and since this was not only their "reunion" tour, but also their FINAL tour (the band had been broken up for over a decade) I looked into flight prices and asked Nancee if she would like to ACTUALLY vacation in Texas so I could attend the show and on the side eat some BBQ, and if at all possible, visit the Shiner brewery. Neither her nor I had been to Texas so it made sense although one might ask why we would visit Texas in the summer? We have plenty of heat in Georgia, why vacation someplace that may be HOTTER? Well, I would say that "I'm crazy," but that would be self-annihilating, so I will say that the real reasons were that I had seen At The Gates open for Napalm Death on At The Gates' now-legendary "Slaughter Of The Soul" tour. To witness them again, and for the last time, was an event not to be missed. Additionally, I know Tomas Lindberg, At The Gate's vocalist, whom I met while working at Relapse Records in 2004/5. He is one of the most genuine people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and I wanted very much to see him again. The icing on the proverbial cake came via personal friends Municipal Waste from Richmond, Virginia who were also on the bill. I try to see/visit them every chance I get. Darkest Hour, a band that I was not familiar with, was providing main support, and ultimately (and to my surprise), Toxic Holocaust was added as another opener to further bolster an already killer bill. 

After booking our flights I started to research BBQ joints from notes that I had taken after watching the Travel Channel's "BBQ Bastions" show. Of all of the places they highlighted the two main BBQ restaurants  of interest in Texas were Kreuz Market in Lockhart and Stubb's in Austin. Opened in 1900, Kreuz (pronounced "kr-ites") was reputed to be the absolute best BBQ in Texas. Their brisket was said to be "divine." I had to go. Nancee told me that she had always wanted to visit Stubb's, which was also renowned for its live music venue. From this we worked out our trip itinerary. I did some further research online to find other well-known BBQ establishments with plans to try and visit as many as Nancee and my stomach would allow.

Nu är det än en gång dags för en ny bekantskap, och som vanligt uppskattar jag detta sätt att upptäcka skivor på. Ska dock sägas att jag redan innan jag lyssnat på Century bildat mig en viss negativ uppfattning, har läst att de spelar "metalcore" och eftersom jag tycker "metalcore" inte bara är en dålig benämning på musik utan också är en urvattnad genre med ett stort överskott av band, så kan man säga att jag börjar lyssna med viss skepsis. Skönt då att man kan ändra sig.

Century kanske kan klassas som "metalcore" (alla, framförallt amerikanska, band som kommer fram idag brukar ju kallas det) men det är mer träffsäkert att kalla det här för Hatebreeds melodiösa kusin. Det är fullt drag från början och blandningen mellan hardcore och mer progressiv metal är härligt upplyftande. Det är så här man ska blanda hardcore och metal, helt klart.

"Pantheon" inleder skivan, en låt som är lätt kaotisk och progressiv samtidigt som den är stenhård. En snygg blandning som känns relativt unik och samtidigt så självklar. "Black Ocean" trampar sedan vidare i samma spår. Snyggt. "Erasure" tar sedan vid och det är först här vi får en riktig refräng till oss. Stenhård och medryckande men samtidigt med en fantastisk melodi på gitarren. En lysande refräng. Även "Rising Sun" stoltserar med en grym refräng.

Till skillnad från närliggande Manntis (släpp nytt snart!) så luras inte Century att skriva en ballad. Avslutande låten på Manntis senaste skiva, "The End where it Begins", förstörde det mangelkalaset till att bli en klassiker bland sentida hybrider av hardcore och metal. Enda andningsrummet som Century erbjuder på "Black Ocean" är inledningen av den tunga "Daylight Algorithm", men istället för att bli smörigt så blir det dystopiskt och lutar mot Neurosis runt "The Eye of Every Storm" och låten blir ett härligt avbrott på skivan. Riktigt vackert, utan att hamna i den klassiska fällan att lägga in ren sång.

"Black Ocean" står ut som bland det bästa som släppts inom denna genre på ett tag. Med en mer progressiv inriktning och med mer fokusering på mangel så slår de de flesta av sina konkurrenter på fingrarna. Låt er heller inte luras första gången ni hör skivan, denna skiva behöver ett antal genomlyssningar innan den sitter.

PS: Skönt med en skiva inom denna genre som inte lider av At the Gates-komplex.

When first drafting this essay I went to great lengths to deconstruct both the far right views of literal creationism versus the far left views of Darwinism. I had reduced both of them to materialistic goals of trying to explain the world. Literal creationists assert claims that don't mesh well with the physical evidence presented by Geology. Darwinists assert that the world created itself and thus DNA codes in effect write themselves. A simple experiment where two inorganic particles are meshed together and result in an organic particle would prove evolution, however to my knowledge this has never been done. I assert that the human race was created by the grace of God and that the biblical creation story is about as literal as the book of Revelation, since snakes do not talk ect. Evolution can perhaps account for prehistory and the physical evidence present in the world at large, but there was a totally a divine hand involved at some point and thusly the missing link. It is a relevant topic about how easily humans can be divided over frivolous matters and does fit in with this discussion of the end of history. However I felt like I spent too long with tearing down both arguments and less time on the decline of civilization itself, I may deal with this issue in depth at a later date.

I had this idea for a novel once where the corporations fake an apocalypse. I had plenty of ideas for how they might go about it. Naturally a capitalist would profit more from a complete controlled society, so let's speculate on how to get there. First you need to crush differences of opinion, the best way to do this would be to make them fight to the death. The process of this, of course, would be a long one so the trick would be to make them worship the same thing a pure capitalist would - money itself. Once you have a society made purely materialistic, with all beliefs reduced to but a mere idolatry of money. The trick is to make the society in question openly acknowledge their materialism but never condemn it. There are a great many dangers in taking life too seriously. Once people truly take their consumer based lives too seriously and are willing to do whatever it takes to make the ends meet, a clash of civilizations can begin which the capitalists can then exploit. There are many conspiracy theories about how this is done or accomplished, and many of them point a finger at some conspiracy lurking in the shadows plotting to destroy civilization. The true conspiracy is very apparent, it only works with near full participation, to blame this on anything material is to not do the evil plan proper justice. I find there is no greater culprit than the pride of life itself - society's vast materialism and lack of a thorough introspection. Once a people believe what they are told, you can tell them whatever you want to, a capitalist with a sheer lack of proper business ethics would be much obliged an opportunity to exploit that. Let us contemplate absolute Atheism as the ends to the means of a society completely poisoned with its own materialism. Let us envision the regulation of the internet as the beginning of a domino effect, a rhetorical war on information with the end result being an internet as useless and uninformative as television itself.

For in my quest to unravel the tragedy of history I have found are no greater enemies to mankind than outright materialism and the darkness of ignorance. Mankind's true enemies are these such concepts, and not any member(s) or other such materialistic division of the human race. We are all one race in a struggle against such darkness. Regardless of what you believe in philosophically there is one thing you should know and understand about economics. Capitalism itself is based on materialism and it is necessary for our daily lives.There seems to be no way around this and this is an accepted fact of life in the Western World. However over time a society believing that is was evolved from monkeys shall become such monkeys entangled in a class struggle analogous to survival of the fittest. The corporate world is a macrocosm for this, as the empires expand buying out the little guys not indifferent from a Tyrannosaur in a world of sheep. All is good and well as long as the market is regulated. But see capitalism is based on being ever expansive, no different than the empires of the Old World. Alexander the Great didn't need to try to conquer the India, but there was more money in it. I was taught in World Civilization at the University of Tennessee that Wal-Mart was now the largest economy in the world (2004), which would in turn make them among the greatest of all empires. As the world changed, warfare changed. The Old World notions of rape and pillage were not forgotten but they were transformed into a legacy of underdevelopment. When one rapes and pillages everyone that participates in the raids gets a little bit of the profit, but when one underdevelopments only the investors that paid for the raid reap any reward.

As we press forward in the 21st century, capitalism continues unabated. The markets become closer together and the people themselves become close together through the internet. This could be a good thing, but the fact remains that the means do not justify the end. The people of the world cannot be conquered by hostile takeover but only through mutual understanding. The internet taught me that and that is why it will one day be shutdown. There is no money in mutual understanding and a rejection of materialistic means that have kept us blind from such for so long. Even hip-hop artists tried to warn us of this. Tupac Shukar said that we needed to make some Changes and he got shot. Biggie Smalls said 'Mo Money, 'Mo Problems and he got shot as well. Their messages left unheard as the next generation rapped on and on about Gold Chains and spinning rims all the while proclaiming that Tupac and Biggie inspired them. Our problems are still here and they are still bigger than hip-hop. This isn't a new concept or without precedent, the same thing happened in the 70's when music devolved from social philosophy into disco. This sad tale is but an analog with a thousand other dead heroes because there was just no profit to be had in pointing out that profit was ultimately pointless. In the modern world we believe we can buy happiness, but we feel like we are missing something in the end.

Regardless of what social, theological or philosophical school of thought that you subscribe to, material means all meet the same ending. Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely. The scales of justice themselves tipped in strong favor of the overwhelming mass of the bottom line as the governments corrupt in favor of the greater wealth of the commercial empires. One by one the nations fall into the same supermarket checkout line, the end result of the works of greed and deceit all the while the secular authorities teach the children that they are but the descendants of mere apes. As entire cultures are consumed in this vacuum, national sovereignty erodes to the point where this no longer any checks and balances, nor is their consumer advocacy, nor any form of oversight. At this point the safety net was long destroyed, crushed under the weight of the bottom line of a one world consumer society's misguided ambitions and desires and the entire social order is left to plummet into the abyss of absolute darkness. This such is the hypothetical blizzard of the world that will only result in the winter of our discontent when all of the great words of the heroes, the philosophers, the poets, the prophets and the honest historians are ultimately forgotten.

And inevitably there will be this day, when all of the resources of the world have been plundered to the point that the wealth of the nations all sit together in the same vault, the capitalists now content to become communists . At which point the new emperors shall fancy themselves as gods, just as the emperors of old once did, for their materialistic accomplishments of conquering the entire world. When this has come to pass, these emperors will then want slaves and become interested in human souls themselves. And they are going to come to you and attempt to brand you as their slaves. An entire generation truly believing itself to be the descendants of mere apes and completely ignorant of the glorious past that came before this point. That cursed day when everyone is asked to sellout, the finality of a cruel world built on betrayal in the name of fattening the bottom line. The circle now completed since the new emperor's of the world's constituents are no longer in demand of rights, history erased, the dissidents repressed eternally and the next generation shall only know what they are allowed to. The whole of society reduced to mere animals by their own designs and excuses, all beliefs degenerated into pure atheism where there is no longer any intelligent question since everyone truly believes that they are nothing more than the descendants of mere apes. The eerily humbled remnants of a once great world civilization reduced to but mere automatons oblivious to the true culprit of their real ancestor's vanity. The tragedy of history forgotten now complete and ironic of its own demise.

This is merely a hypothetical scenario which can be prevented from ever happening. The internet can be the light of a pure democracy, save the internet and damn the empire.
