August 25, 2008 will be a day forever etched in history and the American memory. The Democratic National Convention kicked off with speeches and music in Denver Colorado to celebrate Barack Obama as the first bi-racial presidential nominee in history to accept the Democratic Party's nomination.

This week, Fall Out Boy, Daughtry, N.E.R.D., Otep Shamaya and others will perform for Rock the Vote encouraging and celebrating record numbers of young and new voters.

This year Rock the Vote will forge the largest youth voter registration drive in history, registering 2 million young people. 2008 is clearly the year of the youth vote and Rock the Vote will be there every step of the way.

Otep gave an inspiring, inciteful and insightful speech and encouraged everyone to stand up, speak out and vote!

Denver will forever remember this week....as will America!

Daughtry's doing his part (probably thanks to some cash he's getting from CNN) to encourage young, 1st time voters to make sure they're registered and knowledgable about the presidential candidates.

The real question is, are they knowledgable that this is a cover of Foreigner?

At the top of the chart this week, 3 Doors Down climb back up to #1 with "It's Not My Time", giving the song its 2nd week on top. The last time a song fell from #1 and returned to the top spot was back in 2006 when "Black Horse & the Cherry Tree" did it.

David Cook rebounds back to his peak of #6, but it looks like that will be the highest it goes unless stations suddenly start playing it more.

Fellow Idol alum Daughtry climbs to #9 this week with "What about Now". This gives Daughtry 5 top 10s off their debut album, which is a new record for the HAC chart. This also puts them in a tie for most top 10s from a single album. The other 2 acts are Kelly Clarkson and Nickelback. Another tidbit about Daughtry: They have been consecutively in the top 10 with different songs since January of 2007. Interesting note...Idol judge Paula Abdul had 5 top 10s on the pop chart from her debut cd.

Jesse McCartney gets pushed back out of the top 20 as Collbie Callait jumps over him to land at #20. Lifehouse stalls at #21 but with a strong bullet, so look for it to climb again soon.

Pink has the highest debut of the week at #35 with "So What", her 9th entry on the HAC chart. The other debut is by newcomer Justin Nozuka. He debuts at #40 with "After Tonight".

For you Idol fans, David Archuleta is bubbling under the top 40 with "Crush".

There is nothing that can ever take those words out of my mind..... The words good morning, good morning, happy is today were spoken to me when my son was four years old. Oftentimes I would sing those words to him when he was with me. I am not a great singer but I have the voice of a mother. Ever since he was a baby I would sing him made up songs. One of them was this..... Momma boy, momma boy, momma baby boy. I say that to him recently and he said"I am not a baby...I am a boy." I find myself reflecting on all those precious moments when he is not here. I miss him so much and so do his brothers. We are a family. Music plays a role in our lives. My car radio is always on or I have a cd playing at the times my sons are in the car. My youngest son say to me play ____'s song. When he says this I know that he wants to hear the song that was playing in the car when I picked up his brother. The song is by Daughtry track 4....Over You. Wow what an appropriate song for what I am going through in my life right now. My little one may not understand the words. Some day I'll give him a talk. Some day I'll tell him.....Once upon a time there was a mother and father who had a boy........

I've seen it happen one too many times. A bunch of spoiled and bratty band members, probably sitting around some mahogany board room desk, fiddling with the levers on their leather rolly chairs. They stop spinning for a minute to get to the task at hand: Their next music video.

"Dudes, I like, want this video to be real man. Raw."
"Yeah brosef, how can we like, show the world how serious we are? Like, we're... serious musicians!"

Enter War Footage/Music Video.

Cheaper than having an actual plot or concept to your short film, archival footage has long been used (and abused), as a way to spice up a simple performance video for many bands currently out there. Here's the breakdown:
First, you film the band playing the song. Over. And over. And over again, but from a different angle! Like an MTV interview, this shit must be filmed from every conceivable point of view. This allows you to fake variety without spending too much of the record label's cash.

Then, the band leaves. That's right. In a performance video, all the band has to do is, well, perform. That's another incentive to make a War Footage video: the band pretty much does nothing.

Finally, the editors and director sift through thousands and thousands of controversial clips that show the American Struggle. War footage such as soldiers being led away on stretchers, military funerals, and crying parents lay the foundation for this heavy handed flick. What? You don't like the video? Clearly, you're un-American, you fucking terrorist. That's what you are now. A terrorist.

[caption id="attachment_607" align="alignnone" width="455" caption="Does Kid Rock even know what country this is? Or continent, for that matter?"][/caption]

Of course, we don't have to limit the footage just to war. A lot can be said with stills of peaceful protestors being assaulted, hungry third world children, and America's poor. What? You don't like this either? Well that's because you're an anti-freedom facist, clearly.

[caption id="attachment_608" align="alignnone" width="455" caption="Linkin Park: Strong Opponents of Elephant Poaching, but great supporters of pretentious douchebaggery."][/caption]
[caption id="attachment_609" align="aligncenter" width="455" caption="Yeah, but YOU don't Daughtry. In fact, you probably live in LA. So leave your bold font and fuck off to your condo."][/caption]

What I think really irks me about all of these archival-abusing videos is that the bands think they are "saying something" to their audience. It's unfortunate, because many of these proponents don't really set an example in the appropriate arenas. Where is Linkin Park at the Democratic Convention? Kid Rock, shit man, do you even vote? And don't get me started on Daughtry. That is the most pretentious powerpoint presentation I have seen in a long time. If the artist is so concerned with the issues that are presented in their music videos, then why won't they advocate these causes in places other than VH1?

I think, however, that the video that takes the cake is, hands down, Three Doors Down "Citizen Soldier". Not only is this band hugely crappy, but they sold out in equally gigantic proportions. Deciding to sign with the fucking US Coast Guard, they were one of the first bands to turn their music video not just into a commercial for themselves as artists, but for another beast entirely.

I'm not even going to bother linking these pieces of moving filth.

Stay tuned for next week's breakdown of stereotypical action trailers!

"Leave me out with the waste
This is not what I do
It's the wrong kind of place
to be thinking of you..."
-Damien Rice (w/ Lisa Hannigan)

I have a lot of music in my iTunes music library. I make no secret of the fact that I love listening to music - it's probably the closest I get to spiritual moments in my life. I am constantly downloading music and trying to find new things that please my ear. Some songs are hits, some are misses (recently heard "The Story" by Brandi Carlile, and I didn't love it).

One of the funky facets of iTunes that interests me for some reason, though, is the Play Count. It's kind of interesting to see what gets thrown on "Repeat" (and I do that a lot) and what never gets played all the way through. Currently, songs that have zero plays are many, including:
The One - Tracy Bonham
Addicted to Love - Robert Palmer
Oh Sheila - Ready for the World
(And so so so many more - I should just delete them...)

Even more interesting to me is my most played list. Number one on that list is "9 Crimes" by Damien Rice - a song someone told me about and then I fell in total love with it (and honestly, it's number one because I forgot I had it on repeat and I went out for a forty five minute walk and showered when I got home!). Also on the top five are:
Who Knew - P!nk
What About Now- Daughtry
Boston-Augustana
No One's Gonna Love You - Band of Horses

What is getting the most play in your collection? What are the obvious duds?

The Pentecostal minister, political planner and 'black chick from Brooklyn' is leading an effort to bring religious voters to the Democratic Party. Leah Daughtry is preparing to pray. Hands clasped, elbows on the table, the Pentecostal minister leans toward the conference phone and speaks. "We've confirmed all the readings except the Buddhist person," she says. Daughtry is planning the interfaith celebration of song and prayer that will kick off the Democratic National Convention. Still needed are a Muslim, a Jew, a Catholic and a white evangelical to close. Then another wrinkle: Staffers say the Buddhist may have to yield to a congresswoman angling for a spot onstage. "More women is never a bad thing," Daughtry allows, quickly moving on.

As a fifth-generation minister and veteran political planner, Daughtry seems perfectly suited for the administrative and ecumenical task posed by the gathering and its Noah's Ark of speakers. But her work goes far beyond that one event and even her duties as chief executive of the Denver convention, which opens Sunday.

Daughtry, who keeps an altar at home and devotes a predawn hour a day to prayer and Bible study, is on a mission to narrow the "God gap" between Democrats and Republicans by winning over religious voters who have flocked to the GOP over the last 20 years.

"There are millions of Americans across this country for whom faith is important," says Daughtry, who leads an unprecedented party effort targeting the devout. "And whether they vote on the basis of their faith, or whether they vote about issues that are somehow connected to their faith, we should be reaching out to them."

That doesn't mean changing the party's values, she adds, but moving past issues like abortion and showing that people of faith are not only welcome inside the Democratic Party but wanted.

"There are shades and gradations of what it means to be a Democrat," Daughtry says in her modestly appointed convention office. "We're not all Los Angeles, New York, Birkenstock-wearing Democrats."

Over the last generation, religious voters have become the bedrock of the GOP, with surveys showing the more a person attends services, the more likely he or she is to vote Republican. President Bush worked hard to woo the faithful, and in 2004 won the support of nearly 8 in 10 white evangelicals, accounting for a third of all his votes.

But that support may be slipping. A Pew Research Center poll found Bush's approval among young evangelicals falling from 87% early in his term to 42% in August 2007. A June survey by Calvin College, a Christian school in Michigan, found that for the first time since President Franklin D. Roosevelt took office, a larger percentage of mainline Protestants called themselves Democrats than Republicans.

That may reflect unhappiness with Bush and the GOP amid a weak economy and an unpopular war. But there is also a growing chorus of religious leaders urging worshipers to weigh matters such as poverty, healthcare and environmentalism when they vote.

"The top issues are no longer just abortion and gay marriage," said campaign strategist Eric Sapp, who works with Democrats on faith outreach. "That creates opportunity."

Enter Daughtry, 44, a self-described "black chick from Brooklyn," who was born into politics and the Pentecostal faith. Her father, the Rev. Herb Daughtry, is a longtime civil rights activist. Her earliest memory is walking down a flight of stairs from the family apartment to services, then down another level to dinner with congregants. "It was seamless," she says.

Daughtry found her professional calling in her senior year at Dartmouth, where she ran the campus campaign for Jesse Jackson's 1984 presidential bid. Jackson, a family friend, did her a favor; Daughtry knew nothing about political organizing. "He allowed me to experiment on him," she says.

After graduating, Daughtry headed to Capitol Hill. She moved to the Labor Department under President Clinton, and in 2002 became chief of staff of the Democratic National Committee. Last year she took charge in Denver, her fourth convention. The city has struggled to raise money, but Daughtry -- unflappable and diplomatic, as her juggling of the Sunday lineup suggests -- has kept planning on track.

"Very focused. Very talented," said Steve Farber, a Denver lawyer who helped land the convention. "She gets the job done."

Faith has been a constant in Daughtry's life. She sang in the choir at her church, ran its affairs and worked in the kitchen. But she felt God wanted more.

"I don't have any more hours in a day," she remembers despairing, but lost the argument. "God doesn't allow me to be bossy with him," she says with a deep laugh.

Daughtry began her pastorate in October 2003, though she hates "being on display" and dreads every time she stands up to speak. Her frequent, guileless invocations of God and prayer is rare in politics, and rarer still among Democrats. But Daughtry says churches, mosques and synagogues are filled with worshipers who might vote Democratic if only candidates discussed their beliefs and how they informed their politics.

Disappointed after the 2004 election -- and armed with data showing the correlation between faith and voting -- Daughtry launched Faith in Action, an effort to turn the devout into Democrats. There were doubts inside the party.

"People thought, 'Gee, is this Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell?' " party Chairman Howard Dean says.

But Daughtry was not interested in "beating people over the head with moral issues" or dictating political theology from Washington.

Instead, Daughtry and her interdenominational staff of six have held countless meetings with religious leaders across the country, listening to their concerns and working to move the discussion beyond contentious social issues. That means appealing to Orthodox Jews -- with their large families -- by talking about government-funded healthcare for children, or courting Muslims with a promise to fight discrimination and post-Sept. 11 profiling.

A big test will come this fall. Likely party standard-bearer Barack Obama has courted religious voters like no Democratic nominee since Jimmy Carter. A week after the primaries ended, the Illinois senator met privately with a group of conservative religious leaders, winning positive reviews.

"We want people of faith to know that Barack Obama is a viable option and a candidate who's not ashamed to stand up and talk about his values," says Joshua DuBois, the campaign's director of religious affairs, whose staff has conducted more than 200 "faith town halls" for religious leaders and their followers.

Obama probably can't erase the God gap, even if he seems more comfortable discussing his Christianity than the last two Democratic nominees or, for that matter, his Republican rival, Sen. John McCain of Arizona. A recent Pew poll found Obama trailing McCain among white evangelicals, mainline Protestants and non-Hispanic Catholics. But McCain's support was below Bush's levels, and even small gains by Obama -- winning, say, just 1 in 3 white evangelicals -- could significantly reshape the electoral map, says Allen Hertzke, a University of Oklahoma expert on religion and politics.

"Democrats have developed a keen awareness of the problem and they're seriously engaged in trying to narrow the gap," Hertzke says. "That in itself is a significant change from 2000 and 2004."

But Daughtry is looking past November. "Obviously, you want to win elections," she says. But more important "is the extent to which we allow people of faith to be a vibrant, active part of the party. Because that is a longer-term benefit with greater implications . . . than what one election may or may not yield."

Ok Magazine reports: Rock sensations Daughtry have gone political with a cover of "Feels Like the First Time" for CNN's League of New Voters initiative. Fans can catch the music video today on Campbell Brown: Election Center, as well as on CNN.com video on-demand. The single will also appear on Daughtry Deluxe, due out Sept. 9.

"We strongly believe it doesn't matter who you vote for, as long as you vote," says lead singer Chris Daughtry.

The song was a hit in for Foreigner in 1977, when it was featured as part of CNN's voter initiative, and helped launch their career.

"Daughtry's version of the song is very cool and has more than captured the essence of the original," says Foreigner's Mick Jones. "I am delighted that the song will be used in this critical initiative."

Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" holds at #1 for a 2nd week, but is only 23 spins ahead of 3 Doors Down's "It's Not My Time".

Kid Rock continues his climb up the chart, moving 5-4 with "All Summer Long". David Cook gets pushed back down to #7, but the song is still gaining spins and is just a few spins behind Gavin Rossdale at #6. Just below the top 10 Daughtry moves up to #12 with "What about Now". If his gains continue, he could be top 10 next week.

Jesse McCartney gets a 2nd top 20 hit as "Leavin'" moves up to #20. The Jonas Brothers get their first top 30 on Hot AC with "Burnin' Up", which moves up to #29 in its 4th week on the chart.

Carrie Underwood leaps 7 notches to #31 this week and is the biggest mover within the top 40. Interestingly, she only had an increase of 34 spins over the previous week. Thus, unless more stations play the song, don't expect much of a move up next week. The song is being played on about 20% of the Hot AC panel of stations.

Staind has the highest of the 3 debuts this week. They come in at #34 with "Believe". The song is their 5th Hot AC hit. Newcomer Estelle enters at #37 with "American Boy", and Leona Lewis debuts at #39 with her 2nd hit "Better in Time."

We have another new number one this week. Coldplay score their 1st #1 single on the Hot AC chart with "Viva La Vida", which hits #1 in its 10th week on the chart. That means that 3 Doors Down only spent 1 week at #1, the 2nd song to do that this year. Back in February, "Apologize" spent 1 week at the top.

David Cook inches up one more to #6 with "The Time of My Life". The song will need new growth in order to make the top 5.

Jason Mraz scores a 2nd top 10 hit with "I'm Yours" which moves to #10. His only other top 10 was his 1st hit "The Remedy", 5 years ago.

"What about Now" makes the top 15 this week, while Daughtry's previous hit holds at #9. Metro Station make the top 20 at #20 with "Shake It".

The biggest mover is Lifehouse's "Broken", which climbs 6 to #24 in its 4th week on the chart.

The highest debut is Colbie Caillat's 3rd hit, "The Little Things", at #28. Carrie Underwood also scores a third hit, "Last Name". After bubbling under the top 40 for a while now, the song debuts at #38. Lesley Roy re-enters the top 40 for a 2nd time with "I'm Gone, I'm Going" at #40.

So I was watching TV today flipping between Olympic channels (love me some olympics... I even saw a Turkmen guy compete the other day) and in my surfing I landed on VH1 just in time to see an amazing music video that just inspired me. So I feel as though I should pass that inspiration on to everyone else.

The song I just so happened to land on was "What About Now" by Daughtry. The video is amazing and portrays just how one person can make a difference in the life of another and essentially in the world. Watch it!

Since I have applied for the Peace Corps I have felt an overwhelming amount of support from my family and friends and I couldn't be more grateful. I love reading all of you messages of support and comforting words when faced with some fears and nerves. Many people have also said things along the lines of "I wish I could do something like that..." Well, I want to let you all know that you don't need to join the Peace Corps to make a difference in the world. Many of you do it every single day and you don't even realize it (trust me you have all made a difference in my life). If you are looking for something a little more though, I would encourage you to do something. God has given us all gifts to make a difference in the world, don't waste them. Be the change.

We have a new #1 this week, "It's Not My Time" by 3 Doors Down. It's the group's 2nd #1 hit on Hot AC, with their first being "Here without You". "Time" reaches #1 in its 20th week on the chart.

"Viva La Vida" climbs to #2 and is less than 25 spins away from #1, so 3 Doors Down stay at the top looks short.

David Cook inches up one more to #7, but his bullet is healthier than last week. He could sneak up another notch next week.

Daughtry's "What about Now" jumps 5 to #17 this week, giving the group their 5th top 20 hit off of their debut cd. They're the first group to have 5 top 20s from a debut cd, and only the third act overall to have 5 top 20 hits from any cd. The other two acts? Nickelback and fellow American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson.

"Leavin'" leaps 6 spots to #25 for the week's biggest move. Two songs debut: "One Step at a Time" by American Idol winner Jordin Sparks (have I mentioned Idol enough already? :) ) is the highest debut at #36. John McLaughlin anchors the chart at #40 with the other debut, "Beating My Heart".

This is NO ordinary high school. It's MASSIVE!

There were 4 bands that played on 2 stages throughout the day including Live, Collective Soul, Avril Lavigne and Daughtry.

We were lucky to have such awesome weather because there were huge storms on Saturday during day one of the festival.

We got there around 630 pm and started exploring. We got to the walked around the festival while Jess (Jo Ann's sis went up and got us all "goodies" at each of the booths!

Jess entertained us doing pull-ups at the army booth. :)

While Jo Ann and I snapped a couple pics of each other! LOL

What a week! Haha

The previous week seemed like a self-inflicted punishment as I had scheduled consecutive submissions for each day of the week! And we thought that we could never get through. But we did! Great job by my teammates! And nothing can be more rewarding than watching the Daughtry concert with friend and fellow fan Aimee at Eastwood last Tuesday!

And it really lifted me up and recharged me after weeks of sleepless nights and constant ups and downs! I CONTINUED ROCKING OUT IN MY CAR ON THE WAY HOME. And I didn't care if people thought I was crazy because my windows were rolled down! I still have a hangover and it looks like it's going to be like this for weeks. A BIG BIG thanks to Nikos from me and Aimee! MWAH!
