I'm surprised no one has mentioned this: the lack of biological parents in cartoon shows. Think of all the characters who live with someone other than their parents: Huey, Dewey, Louie, and Webby living with Uncle Donald then Uncle Scrooge in DuckTales. Gosalyn and Darkwing Duck in Darkwing Duck, Robin and Nightwing living with Batman. Also, Penny and Uncle Gadget. No explanation is given about their parents' whereabouts. When I was a kid I wondered where they were. I think if cartoon creators have a handle enough to show orphans, they should go the full monty and explain where mom and dad are.
- Contributed by Mark P.

Yet another common device that cartoon manufacturers use is to add a character to a show that is there solely for the purpose of comic relief (usually, it backfires, though). This character is quite frequently of some other species, &c. than the main character(s). Examples are Slimer in The Real Ghostbusters, Snarf in ThunderCats, Alexander in Josie and The Pussycats, Blip in Space Ghost, Orko in He-Man, Chim-Chim in Speed Racer, Godzuki in Godzilla, and Needler in The Pirates of Dark Water.

What’s the nature of ghosts in The Real Ghostbusters? Are they extra-dimensional critters, traumatic psychic residue, or is the team actually capturing the souls of the deceased with proton lightning and cramming them in a basement nuclear reactor? That seems awfully blasphemous. Perhaps it’s symbolic of people’s willingness to ignore their past, or maybe a commentary on modern urban life being "soulless."

Today i struck one of those forgotten areas of my mind. An area i couldn't put a name to but could see. A childhood cartoon with good memories attached, even if i can't quite remember the events of the cartoon. I was fortunate enough to discover the name of this nagging memory through some lucky google searching. Darkwing Duck. Anyone else remember it? Awesome cartoon.

I seem to be reminiscing about kids shows a lot lately. Paddington Bear, Little Bear, Franklin, Busy Town . . . good shows all of them, at least they were when i was 9 or younger. But i'm sure all of them were better than the shows kids have today. I have seen some absolutely terrible kid shows recently. Maybe the shows i watched were actually bad . . . no, no the shows these days don't compare. The Night Garden? Very weird show. Kids these days have to watch either shows lilek that or some silent, scrawny red-head mope about a gym! How does that compare to good-old spot? So seriously, get some of that past quality out there!

Hur som helst så är jag en sucker för tecknat. Eller, inte modern tecknat, för det suger. Men lite halvmodernt. Och gammalt. Typ Kalle Anka.

The same development team that made the Mega Man games on the NES under the leadership of Keiji Inafune also made several games based on syndicated Disney TV cartoons of the time. What's particularly interesting is that these games use the same game/graphics engine as the Mega Man games, as well as the same art team. Thankfully the characters don't just play like Mega Man. Chip n' Dale fight enemies by throwing apples, boxes, etc. Scrooge bounces around on his walking stick like a pogo stick. Darkwing duck likes to hang around on hooks.

I bet you were wondering about the Top Ten NES games of all time, weren’t you? Good, because

I bet you were wondering about the Top Ten NES games of all time, weren't you? Good, because I can help you! I originally posted this entry as being written by a Jewish Mystic combing the Bible for secret Top Ten video game lists. I must confess that was a hoax and I am exorcizing the mythical Mystic from these posts. In truth, this is a list of MY top ten FAVORITE NES games, with an emphasis on variety. It must be said that there are many NES games I've never played or have had limited time with and I'll address some of these at the end of the list. As I am a true nerd, this list will probably change as I play more and more gamez.

#10 MEGA MAN (Capcom): A solid action game with a cool paper/rock/scissors concept and a non-linear progression. The character design is near the top of the NES bunch. If you like this game you're in luck because there are five sequels that are practically the same game. Also check out the DuckTales, Rescue Rangers and Darkwing Duck games by Capcom, which all use the same graphics and gameplay engine.

#9 BUBBLE BOBBLE (Taito) - wheeeeee!! A successful port of an arcade hit. Players get to control Bub and Bob, a couple of cute dragons, and run around trapping cute bad guys and bubbles before kicking them to hell. It's like a much, much more developed version of the original Mario Bros. (1983) The bubbles are also used as platforms and the game's physics actually change drastically from one stage to another. For example, bubbles shoot quickly in some stages and slowly in others. In some stages, Bub and Bob can almost jump through walls but not in others. These changes keep you on your toes. This game is also famous, along with Contra, as being one of the few NES classics that allow for simultaneous multiplayer action.

#8 SUPER DODGE BALL (Technos) - One of the few kick-dick sports game in existence and naturally, it's a fictional sport. Basically, you master several special throws to KILL your opponenets with your dodgeball. Yes, you really kill them and even get to watch their immortal souls float away to the Heavens. In the American version, you control the USA National Dodge Ball Team and you work your way up through the ranks, finally getting to kill the Soviet National Team. This game features the same characters as the Technos releases River City Ransom, Nintendo World Cup, Crash n' the Boys, and other Technos-developed games. This game may have single-handedly given rise to the action-sport genre, possibly inspiring the likes of NBA Jam and NFL Blitz.

#7 GHOSTS 'N GOBLINS (Capcom) - GNG was originally released in the arcades but this NES port is actually an improvement as several ridiculously cheap situations are ironed out. Don't worry, though, it's still a very difficult game. If you like both Super Mario and Contra then you should enjoy this buttcracking game, as it really falls somewhere in-between. It's amazing that this game (or the arcade release, at least) is just as old Super Mario Bros. but it doesn't really get the props for being one of the first side-scrolling platforming adventures with many levels.

#6 THE LEGEND OF ZELDA (Nintendo) - Vague is the name of this game. You have no idea what to do, which sucks. However, it still has an epic feel to it and when you actually figure out how to get into the next dungeon, it's pretty good karate. I must admit there is no possible way I would have ever completed this game without a guide. I just don't have that kind of patience and I'm not willing to run round the entire overworld attempting to burn every bush until I find the next secret dungeon. Incredibly, this is the sort of thing Nintendo really expected people to do and announced at the time that there were "100 hours of playtime" in this game.

#5 METROID (Nintendo) - Another super vague game but like Zelda it's dripping with atmosphere and exciting times. Finding powerups can be good times but the awesome music that plays when you find them makes owning an NES worthwhile. This game also requires a lot of random shooting and running around in order to find new paths to follow. And there's no map to refer to! This is another game that I had to use a guide for due to my low levels of intelligence and patience but I'm glad I got through it one way or another as the final confrontation and then the final escape scene were great touches. This is one of the few NES games that has some real tension. There's a real sense of dread regarding the mysterious Metroids that you won't see until almost the very end of the game.

#4 KID ICARUS (Nintendo) - Why is this game better than Metroid and Zelda? Durrrrr. It isn't super vague in a major annoying way. It uses Metroid's gameplay and graphic engines and even features an enemy that looks just like our friends the Metroids. It plays like a combination of Metroid, Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda. The first three stages in each level are vertically or horizontally-scrolling platformer action-oriented combined with Zelda-like inventory management. Every fourth level is a labyrinth that will appeal to you Zelda nerds but these labyrinths are actually somewhat manageable and with some exploration their layouts can be memorized and then destroyed.

#3 NINJA GAIDEN (Tecmo) - Hai-yah! This is a very challenging but very awesome ninja kick-fighting video game for your NES. Actually, it basically plays like a fast-paced version of Castlevania and that is a good thang. Like Castlevania, there are power ups that come in limited supply. The enemies never stop coming in this game and annoyingly respawn in the same spot if you accidentally back up a bit before advancing. As a result, lightning reflexes and memorization of enemy locations is a key requirement. This game was also special for featuring detailed and even semi-interesting story cut-scenes, a rarity at the time. These scenes gave the action a sense of purpose and drama that they would otherwise lack.

#2 CASTLEVANIA (Konami) - It's slow. It's scary. I don't know why, but it's awesome. It's also very difficult so put on your pants for this one. Many of the Western horror archetypes are present in the game with everyone from Dracula and Frankenstein('s monster) to a dirty hunchback making appearances. Unfortunately, the graphics are very 1986 so the details on these monsters aren't exactly clear or frightening. However, the difficulty level IS frightening. It's hard to say exactly why a game with bad graphics and very slow action is so good but it all comes together, somehow.

#1 SUPER MARIO BROS. 3 (Nintendo) - Okay, listen. If it weren't for the 'emphasis on variety' requirement, SMB 1-3 would probably be the top 3 on this list. Gosh, this is a good game! Fast-paced! Great character designs! Awesome level designs! Tons of levels! Painfully creative! Play it. But you probably already have.

HONORABLE MENTIONS: Bionic Commando, Mega Man 2-6 (my memories of all of these games are completely melted together), DuckTales, Chip 'n Dale's Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck, Rainbow Islands, Zelda 2, Ninja Gaiden 2 & 3, Castlevania 2 & 3, Super Mario Bros. 1 & 2, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, Kirby's Adventure, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 & 3, Batman, Bonk's Adventure, Double Dragon 1 & 2

"ME AM MAD. MY FAVORITE GAME DIDN'T DO ON THIS LIST!" Yes, there are really several NES supposed-classics I haven't played enough to comment on but intend to play someday. This list includes: Contra, Super C, Metal Gear, Gargoyle's Quest II, Willow, Blaster Master, Crystalis, Rygar, and River City Ransom.

"WAIT, WHERE AM THE RPGz?" Well, I have played through Final Fantasy I and Dragon Warrior I & II but I currently have a personal bias against turn-based RPGs as a genre so sooowwwwwy.

I think my personal favorite is "Let's get really risky!", the Dutch version. The translators must have had an interesting night in Amsterdam or something.

Another interesting note: "In Poland and Sweden the series was considered too brutal, and after a few episodes were aired (despite gaining many fans), the show was taken off." Buh?

I love living in an age with this type of useless information at my fingertips, I really do.

The mighty platypus; We all know about this creature, or at least know of it. It is often referred to as the duckbilled platypus, but this is more cumbersome of a term than simply platypus. Also, it’s stupid, because no other forms of the platypus exist. It’d be different if there was also a mandibled platypus in addition to the duckbilled one. Then I could see somebody using the mouth-shape as a characteristic of identification. But really, it’s fucking pointless to say “duckbilled platypus”. Do you say “duckbilled duck?” No, you will always say “Darkwing Duck.” Eat shit, Daffy.

I have always considered platypi to be the plural form of platypus. Recently, it has come to my attention that this may not necessarily be true. Indeed, as I typed it two sentences prior, my word processor underlined it as a misspell, indicating that it may very well not be a word. Is this the case?

I certainly hope not. In addition to platypus, there exist other words that I change from “-us” to “-i” to indicate plurality, namely cactus and octopus. Fuck yeah; we all know (or should know, less you be ignorant or stupid) that cacti means “more than one cactus” and that octopi means “more than one octopus”.

The process of pluralizing nouns is something I find quite interesting (in relation to how boring the rest of the shit in English class was). Adding to this is my pretty high self-regard when it comes to using words correctly. I have chastised people in the past for misuse of words, and likewise, my pride is dealt considerable blows when I find myself in error, or it is identified as such by one of my peers. But no worries here, I am nearly dead certain on how to pluralize all three of the words in question.

Once upon a time, there was a man, who in dealing with me, somehow entered upon a conversation concerning cacti. This man was quite confused, and considered cacti to be singular and cactus to be plural. I could only think two things: 1) He must be thinking cactus is plural because it ends with an “s”, or 2) He must be a fucking dumbass. #2 was definitely the case, but it may have been in combination with numero uno.

Thinking quickly to fix his error without much embarrassment, I went into damage control. “Surely he must know that octopus is singular; It is far too common to be misunderstood in such a manner.” I presented this to him. “Well, sir, I mean, octopus means just one octopus, whereas octopi means more than one octopus.” Without hesitation, he disagreed. Now I was confused, flustered, and angry. Above that, I was frustrated. This was no mere mortal man (by army standards), he was a hero, a legend to behold indeed. He was, in fact, a Lieutenant Colonel.

Fuck. How much can I stomach? Normally this would be the time I would castrate his ego and leave him staring back at his own naked ignorance. But I am a dog in the army, and, as such, a dog will not bite a man, nay, an outstanding man, without repercussion. Negative repercussion.

Did I stand up for my mores? Did I swallow my pride? Find out next week on “This Is One of the Many Reasons I Hate the Army.”

And we’re back. On last week’s episode we learned that Lieutenant Colonels can be illiterate English-butchering fuckwads. And now, the exciting conclusion.

Yeah, I just fucking agreed with that guy. I stand by my decision. He wouldn’t have gotten anything from it anyway, and my life is probably more comfortable now because of it. If I felt like I could’ve made a difference or positive impact… Fuck, I probably still would’ve agreed with the dumbass. Is that bad? Maybe. At this point, in this place, sometimes staying under the radar is just the way to go. And right now, right here, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’ll wait until I move on.

Back to plurality. Like I said, I wanted to destroy this guy for mangling word identification, but uh, was I actually wrong the entire time?

I was doing nothing one night not too long ago, and hence I was searching Wikipedia quite randomly. I came upon an article concerning echidnas. Now, if you don’t know, echidnas are one of the most primitive mammals, and they lay eggs. One of the only other mammals that lays eggs is the platypus. So, obviously, I hit up the platypus article next.

Now I’m thinking about how the platypus is just weird as fuck. But, I love the word platypi, because it’s one of my favorite ways to pluralize words. It just sounds cool, okay? Wikipedia thought otherwise, however.

As it turns out, there is no universally accepted word for “more than one platypus”. Scientists generally use platypuses or just simply platypus to indicate more than one. Wow, I am the fucktard. Oh, wait, hold on just a second. I continue to read, and the article does indeed mention “platypi”. Good, it’s going to agree with me. Reading, reading, reading… Hmmm. Says here that platypi is actually a colloquial term, and is technically Dog Latin. In case you are unfamiliar with the term Dog Latin, let me explain. It is the degradation of genuinely Latin words that are borrowed into English; Fucked up in English by trying to modify them. In other words, it’s like Engrish, except we’re the dumb ones. Or, maybe just me, since I thought it was correct all this time.

Well, remember what I said about dealing a substantial blow to my pride factor? Mang, that shit was tough to read. I have to know if this is the case for my other two pet words.

Let’s break from animals and head for cactus. Yes! Cacti is the most common way to pluralize cactus. Fucking score. In addition to this, it is the grammatically correct way to go about business when following the rules of Botanical Latin. Grammar points, bitches. Disappointment accompanies my joy, however. In following Greek grammar rules, we discover that cactuses and cactoi are the correct terms. Fuck the Greeks. Cactoi does sound pretty cool, but it does not reflect well upon my argument. Cactuses is generally accepted, however, and so is just plain cactus. Man, fuck that. Cacti is the word I will use, and if you don’t use that word, then you will be labeled as a Greek asshole. Is that what you want? Byzantine, fuck thyself.

Okay, I consider the cactus/cacti battle to be won in my favor. A similar result with octopus will leave me at a respectable 2-1, whereas defeat will leave 1-2, and quite shamed.

To quote Wikipedia, “There are three forms of the plural of octopus; namely, octopuses, octopi, and octopodes. Currently, octopuses is the most common form in the UK as well as the US; octopodes is rare, and octopi is often objected to.”

What the fuck? Okay, so octopuses is the most common? That is SHIT! That is a stupid word. If and when I ever hear somebody utter that word, I will… Fuck, I do not know what I will do. Apparently it is correct, but it sounds so wrong. Like the “c-word”. I refuse to use it, and when people say it, I feel quite disturbed at my core. When people say octopuses? Same thing.

Tiny victories, me, tiny victories. Alright, it says octopi is in a secure second place, as octopodes is rarely used. However, I think that octopodes is probably more common that octopuses, but whatever. What is truly bothersome is that octopi is objected to; Incredible.

As it turns out, this may be just. To again quote Wikifuckia, “Octopi derives from the mistaken assumption that octōpūs is a second declension Latin noun, which it is not.” Oh shit, I always make that mistake. It’s so easy to get second declension nouns mixed up with first declension nouns, just as in English it’s easy to mistake the hesternal preterit past tense for the prehodiernal absolute-relative past tense. Typical rookie fuck up; my bad.

Technically, the word is Latinized Greek, not Latin. <sarcasm> Whoops. </sarcasm> It is interesting to find, however, that if it were a Latin word, the plural form of octopus would actually be octopedes, much like milipedes or centipedes. Nice.

So, really what is this all about? Am I a pedant? Couldn’t be, I don’t even know what the word means. And that’s the true lesson here: You can’t truly be pedantic if you‘re unfamiliar with the term. Cacti, octopi, and platypi, now and forever

© Bernie Wrightson

Lest mein Schuldbekenntnis. Mea culpa.

The Shadow
