Despite the massive flooding here in the county, I have managed to weather TS Fay without too much d

Despite the massive flooding here in the county, I have managed to weather TS Fay without too much damage. The duct tape on the smashed-in window just *barely* held up against the winds that pelted us from the ESE to WSW the entire time. It did not hold against the water however so there was leakage inside. Thankfully, that is all that leaked. I was concerned about some missing tiles on the roof as well, but they managed to hold. Water did blow into the attic vent on the side of the house under the eave, and while a little dripping was heard inside the ceiling, nothing made it through. I am hoping that will dry out on its own once we start to heat back up again.

The storm did cause some damage to the siding of the front of the house where it pulled the wood away from the building. Some pieces of that are going to have to be replaced ASAP and I am going to have to board that window up for good since I cannot afford to have it replaced. This will be done with borrowed tools and hopefully the helping hand of one of my neighbors. I will need to find some heavy-duty 4" screws to go through both the wood paneling and the concrete of the building. Yikes. As of this morning, it was not immediately apparent that any other neighbors took any damage, save for a downed mailbox at Dana and Gary's place.

Flooding remains the primary concern all along the Treasure Coast where we are still being pelted by heavy rains. Today they are coming with 15-45 minute breaks inbetween the rains which is allowing waters to recede just slightly. Many homes, especially in older areas such as along Delaware Ave., and in farming areas reported water entering the residences. A large number of intersections, and in many places in the area entire neighborhoods, are completely impassible and this morning many were blocked off by officers directing traffic out of these areas.

On my way in to work this morning, I was turned back twice, as Oleander was severely flooded between Edwards and Virginia, and Virginia was severely flooded between US1 and 25th Street. North 39th Street in Fort Pierce also remains badly flooded north of Angle Road for at least 3 blocks. This area however has not been blocked off. Trucks and larger vehicles are able to pass through slowly, but passenger cars are having great difficulty getting through. Most are turning around.

With the ground being so saturated, I would advise ALL drivers to not exit the roadway into swales to turn around. The ground is likely to give way and sink the vehicle a foot or more, as happened to a very good friend of mine the last time it flooded here. He did not realize he was pulling into a grassy area until it was too late and the majority of the front end of his truck was under mud and water.

I will be going home to check on things again shortly, and I hope to God that tape has held up through today's storms as I had to come in to work today and could not be there for window-rescue as I was up all night doing.

Here's hoping anyone reading this either fared well or lives out of the area and did not have to deal with Fay.

Smoking is now regarded as an important factor in increasing the risk of impotence, especially young

Smoking is now regarded as an important factor in increasing the risk of impotence, especially young men. In a study of 1300 men, researchers found that smokers are more dangerous than impotence, not - smokers or former smokers. Smokers in their 40's, a young group, the study showed the greatest risk of impotence than men in other age groups. They were seen to be almost three times more likely to impotence.

Smoking is also a lesser extent, men in their 50 and 60, but not in accordance with their 70th The researchers M. Naomi Gades, MD and Steven J. Jacobson, MD from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota, it is not surprising. Older men develop, with great risk for impotence such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and high cholesterol. For young men the link between smoking and impotence is less likely than "masked" in these risk factors.

Excessive consumption of alcohol also causes damage to blood vessels, leading to impotence. Doctors suggest that an acceptable amount of alcohol is not more than two alcoholic drinks for men, preferably red wine.

Saddle pressure can also cause temporary impotence in men, often, cycling, especially those log several thousand miles per year. Although the bike adjustments may reduce the risk, research has shown that "Cut" on bicycles to facilitate the semi stress can actually increase the risk of impotence. Researchers found that among 463 men, at long - distance cycling events only 4% temporary impotence in the next week. While many of those who reported they had cut saddle were at lower risk for impotence, those who felt a sense of numbness in the groin, likely to develop impotence if they are used cutout seat. In addition, the researchers found that these uses, mountain bikes and bicycles with driving higher than the saddle was increased risk of impotence.

The good news about all this is that there are many things men can do to minimize the risk of impotence.

It has always been traditional to save things. You name it and we will save it. Clothes that have be

It has always been traditional to save things. You name it and we will save it. Clothes that have been outgrown, miscellaneous furniture, curtains and draperies, toys, home decorations, and of course our treasured collectibles, like books or a thousand other things we take an interest in, can fill our houses to overflowing. Once all of the basement area, attic space, and closets in the home are all filled up, the next step will usually be to get a storage building of our own or rent a space in a storage facility somewhere near by.

It is really ridiculous to accumulate so much stuff, but some of us just can not seem to help it. Then there are times when we move or remodel our home when we might only need to use a storage facility or out building temporarily. Whatever the reason, we will need to make sure that any of the items that we store will be protected from water damage and mold.

If you are going to rent a storage space, be sure and ask the owner if it is entirely water proof. They will probably tell you it is and they should be insured just in case something did happen to any of your things while they are there. The reason that it is so important for the storage unit to be waterproof is because water or excessive moisture can ruin items like wood or upholstered furniture, unprotected clothes, and paper or books. When things like this get wet or even damp enough, it is a prefect breeding ground for mold.

Three elements are required to produce mold and they are moisture, warmth, and food. When mold begins to grow on one wet item, it will spread to any other things that are near by and damp too. If you have things stored in a facility that has all three of these conditions present, over a short period of time, it could all be ruined.

Taking appropriate precautions with your mold prone items is the best assurance against it. Whether you are using a rented storage facility or you use your own storage building at home, be sure to cover your furniture with plastic and secure it to keep it dry. Put clothing and any other fabrics in plastic bins with lids to keep moisture and insects out. Use plastic bins as well to protect books or other paper materials. Make sure the lids are secure. Doing this will protect your things from water and mold for a good long while until you are ready for them again.

Women have a unique, all purpose ad hominem redirect that most women choose not to use, and yet one

Women have a unique, all purpose ad hominem redirect that most women choose not to use, and yet one we see all too often --- "You're sexist," or, more specifically, "You attack me because I'm a woman, you sexist." We saw this in all varieties earlier this year. To name two: we saw it covertly, from the Hillary Clinton campaign; overtly, from her supporters.

Former Bush administration rouge Monica Goodling brought another spin on the same formula. She implied that she was attacked because she was a woman, yet did it without saying a word. All she had to do was start acting in the manner of an attacked woman, or at least act like the exact stereotype of an attacked woman.

Stephen Colbert took it at face value. From the same excellent episode of The Colbert Report that brought us the Three-Card Monte game that explained high oil prices, we have also this very funny segment that sums up the incident nicely:

For television, this is a remarkably deep look at what isn't even the most recent scandal at the highest levels of our incumbent administration. Naturally, there have been deeper analyses of Monica Goodling's testimony, but Colbert is, as always, going for the laugh. If he makes his viewers thoughtful, all the better.

I was pretty thoughtful for a good five minutes. I think that throwing Monica Goodling to the wolves was meant as all-purpose damage control.

She wasn't blamed for the improper hiring and firing of federal attorneys just because she's an expendable woman, but more precisely because the blamers that be knew she could use her femininity to her advantage. As Slate notes, she was in full damsel in distress mode during the hearing, and most of the panel fell for it, hook, line and sinker.

Party-line Democrats who weren't watching closely had already joined her side because she had appeared to be yet another woman scapegoated in the tradition of Eve. Note that the "You can't blame me because I'm a woman" defense is only credible if we already believe that women are frequently scapegoated.

It's a bitter irony that we're all the more susceptible to Goodling's innocent girl performance only because we rightly acknowledge that witch hunts still exist.

Having minor to major water damage to occur in your home from plumbing issues or from a natural disa

Having minor to major water damage to occur in your home from plumbing issues or from a natural disaster may not be something that a home owner has ever dealt with before. It may be overwhelming to see all that is going to have to be done to get the house repaired and back to normal. The first call that you should make is to your insurance company to find out the extent of your coverage.

Hopefully, you have previously made sure that you will be covered in the event of flooding. Plumbing breaks are normally covered in a home owner policy, but natural disaster flooding can be an entirely different matter. In almost all cases you are not covered for this type of flooding unless you have purchased coverage specifically for natural disaster floods. It is a shame that so many people waited until it happened to them before they considered they might ever have a need for it.

If you are covered for the flooding, some insurance companies will handle hiring a water damage restoration company for you. Some insurance companies might leave that decision up to you. When you have never had to hire someone to repair a flooded home before, there are things you need to check into before you decide who to give your job to.

If you want more choices than your local telephone directory gives you, find a computer and get on the internet. If your home computer is not accessible at the time, you might use the computer of a friend or even try a library. The internet offers many companies to choose from. These are the qualifications you need to look for:

1] They must be licensed and insured. Almost any company you find on the internet will be, but it never hurts to make sure.

2] How long will it take them to respond? A truly expert company will be able to get someone to your home within hours, not days.

3] How long have they been in business? An older company will normally have more experience. While you can not always count out a newer company, you might prefer a company that has been tried and true.

4] Do they have references available if you want them? Talking with other satisfied clients can help to set your mind at ease.

5] Will they help get your belongings out and back in the home?

6] Is their equipment up to date? They should have the latest professional equipment and supplies.

7] Are all their workers trained and have had background checks performed on them?

8] Will they give you an approximate estimate for the cost and a time line for completion of the work?

These are the most important questions that you will want answered. You can also check with the Better Business Bureau just to make sure that they have not had any prior complaints lodged against them.

Insurance Coverage for Water Damage

People everywhere are rethinking their need to have insurance coverage in case of a natural disaster

People everywhere are rethinking their need to have insurance coverage in case of a natural disaster flood. It has been determined that really there is almost no where that is completely safe from flooding unless you perhaps live on a mountain top and even then torrential rains could do you in too. So, how do you determine how much coverage will be adequate if you ever had to collect?

FEMA has reported that flash flooding can create walls of water from ten to twenty feet. Flash flooding can occur in all of our fifty states. So it is true that almost anywhere is subject to flooding. It is easier than ever to discover just how at risk your home might be. The internet is the one place where you can submit your address to many insurance agencies and have them give you the information you need about your risk level.

By searching the internet you are able to get quotes from as many insurance businesses as you like. You can compare the coverage they offer along with their premium rates in order to get the best deal that you can. If you think your home could ever be faced with ten feet of water that could possibly destroy almost everything you own including the home itself, would you want to be caught short of money needed to replace your home and belongings?

Be sure that the company you select for your coverage has had a good record for paying off their clients that had flood damage in a timely manner. Ask for references and do not be afraid to ask tough questions. Any insurance policy can be tricky to understand and with natural disaster flooding there have been problems for some people when they have tried to make their insurance company pay when they were not specifically covered for this type of flooding.

With any luck, maybe you will never have to collect on a flood coverage policy, but it is so much better to be safe than sorry. Some items that are lost in natural disaster floods can never be replaced, but the important things like your home, furniture, clothing, and appliances will be covered. For insurance purposes you should always keep a list of the items in your home that should be covered. Many people even make video tapes of their belongings which is even better than a list.
