“That’s so Chinese!”
ExtremelyFar&IncrediblyClose

Why? Because China! Or as the locals (with locals I mean my fellow language students) would say: wèi shénme? Yingwèi Zhong guó! This must be our most popular Chinese phrase ever. Why? Because we learned to just accept that Chinese culture is simply different and just gave up questioning some of the things we encounter in everyday life. Here is a quick list of things that might be impossible in any other country of the world. -          Serving pizza margarita without tomato sauce but with ketchup -          Wearing plush bunny house slippers in the street -          Wearing 12 cm high heels for a walk in the park -          Doing sports in street clothes (including jeans and leather jacket). With sports I mean jogging around the sports ground. -          Wearing pyjamas / sports clothes to the office (or our cantine) -          Seeing you standing in line. Walking right past you and securing the first empty toilet. -          Pouring oil over nice healthy vegetable rolls to make them s

Navigatoren des Wissens
digisophy

IJFD in Japan 2012/13

Beauty of Personality – Schönheit der Persönlichkeit

“A water bearer in India had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole which he carried across his neck. One of the pots had a crack in it, while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full. For a full two years this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a half pots full of water to his house. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, perfect for which it was made. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do. After two years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer one day by the stream. “I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you. I have been able to deliver only half my load because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house. CSCM – Viral Video
evamia13

For the viral video project I was part of the creative team. We had one big meeting with everyone where we came up with the basic idea. The powder idea was from me and we just expanded on it in the meeting. I also wrote the script together with Jemma Johnston. After that we had another short meeting with part of the creative team to talk about the specifics of the ending. We also had a meeting with the production team and part of the post-production team to explain the script and other specifics ( for example the music we want to use). I also took part in the practice the day before we shot the video and in the video I am the ‘Culture studies’ person. Throughout the whole process the creative team had frequent contact via Facebook, where we talked about the idea, the music and basically everything which could be helpful.

My Mecklenburgian adventure
Kreativsaison Mecklenburg

In spite of sharing coastal borders with Denmark, the state of Mecklenburg is still an unexplored area for me. This, however is about to change from as of next week. Joining the #Balticdiscovery-team on a 5 day roundtrip of Mecklenburg, is my entrance to get a better impression of a region, which in proximity is very close to my home country, but in history, culture and nature hopefully has a lot of new impressions to offer. With a background in anthropology, the possibility of being introduced to an area by its ‘locals’ and shown the hidden treasures and unique spots of a city, is an opportunity too good to miss. So when I was accepted on this international team of young travel journalists, my inner anthropologist was of course very pleased. I am currently studying a master in Media, Globalisation and Journalism, and so, the possibility of combining my two interests of anthropology and writing was, of course, a dream scenario for my part.
