Cerebral Palsy or (CP) as it is more commonly known, is an umbrella term encompassing a group of non-progressive, non-contagious diseases that cause physical disability in human development.

Cerebral refers to the affected area of the brain, the cerebrum (however the centers have not been perfectly localised and the disease most likely involves connections between the cortex and other parts of the brain such as the cerebellum) and palsy refers to disorder of movement.
The incidence of cerebral palsy is about 2 per 1000 live births. The incidence is higher in males than in females.

All types of CP are characterised by abnormal muscle tone, posture (i.e. slouching over while sitting), reflexes, or motor development and coordination. There can be joint and bone deformities and contractures (permanently fixed, tight muscles and joints). The classical symptoms are spasticity, spasms, other involuntary movements (e.g. facial gestures), unsteady gait, problems with balance, and/or soft tissue findings consisting largely of decreased muscle mass.

Babies born with severe CP often have an irregular posture; their bodies may be either very floppy or very stiff. Birth defects, such as spinal curvature, a small jawbone, or a small head sometimes occur along with CP. Symptoms may appear, change, or become more severe as a child gets older. Some babies born with CP do not show obvious signs right away.

There is no known cure for CP. Medical intervention is limited to the treatment and prevention of complications possible from CP's consequences.

We, www.lifechums.com/ are now going to provide a wealth of information of Famous People to send out a positive message to all Disabled People.

Good News!

Not only is the Rocketship Empires 1936: Core Campaign book going into hard copy this weekend (February 2nd, 2008) and coming online at RPGnow and DriveTHRU RPG; The Gunslinger Betty book is finished, edited and posting up both in soft and hard copy at the very same time.

That puts me a little ahead of schedule from where I'd hoped to be in the first quarter of 08.

Next up?

REGION BOOK NO. 1: The Kingdom of Spain

This is a fifty page source book detailing the star systems and colonies of the Kingdom of Spain. Specifically this source book focuses on the unfolding civil war, introduces the various factions involved and how the adventures of the characters can impact both popular opinion outside of the war zone and the course of the conflict.

If your group is more of the neutral, "how can we turn a League credit out of this situation" mind set, plenty of pages cover merchanting, blockade running and smuggling, piracy, bounty hunting, mercenary work, archo-raiding and other lucrative hobbies.

Also up in the first quarter of 2008.

The Starship Resource No. 1

The first in a series of books covering ten starships of various classes and purposes for the Rocketship Empires 1936 setting. This particular book partners up with the first regional book and focuses on examples of starships one might encounter in the region of the civil war.

The Madrid Run

This is the first adventure module for RE 1936. At fifty pages stuffed full of small font goodness, maps, plot threads and encounters this module represents several adventures in one and in most cases can be spread out over several play sessions.

That's it for now from the bullet point of Rocketeering.

Is that my waffles burning?

On va voir. Peut-être même que je vais commencer à écrire sur autre chose que mes soucis.

Dormez bien. Ici le soleil est de retour et les jupes se soulèvent sur son passage.

3 Smart Things About Music

05.19.08

1 The pitches in musical scales are likely derived from language. Turns out, aspects of spoken English and Mandarin correlate to the intervals between notes in a chromatic scale (the black and white piano keys in an octave). Is it music we love or the sound of our own voices?

2 When musicians improvise, the lateral prefrontal areas of their brains — responsible for planning and self-censorship — basically turn off. Meanwhile, the medial prefrontal cortex — linked to self-expression and activities like telling a story about yourself — lights up.

3 Getting "Eye of the Tiger" stuck in your head is the result of a glitch in your auditory cortex. This part of your brain processes sounds and stores them for later recall. It powers up and can start crooning uncontrollably after hearing just a few notes of a familiar tune. Want it to stop? Listen to the whole song or do some math.

To that, I say:

and (watch this without sound, while it's playing)

And best:

So, here's the question: does this explain why music plays a vital role to social changes and movements? As if there's a duality of language being created? Could this be why the Beatles can represent a social upheaval surrounding an entire era of chaos? Then there are quesitons about how linguistics play into music as well; meaning -I guess- more about the lyrical aspects of complementing music. Perhaps a caesura is just as relevant as sound.

Oh, Ethics Committee- 4:33 later we might all know!

as posted in everydayhealth.com

While some regions of the brain mature a few years late in youngsters with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), their brains do develop in a normal pattern, concludes a study by researchers at the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).

They found that the delay in brain maturation in children with ADHD was most prominent in regions at the front of the brain's outer mantle (cortex), which is involved in thinking, planning and attention.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the brains of 223 children with ADHD revealed that half of 40,000 cortex sites attained peak thickness at an average age of 10.5, compared to age 7.5 in a group of children without ADHD.

However, both youngsters with ADHD and those without the disorder showed a similar back-to-front progression of brain maturation with different regions peaking in thickness at different times.

"Finding a normal pattern of cortex maturation, albeit delayed, in children with ADHD should be reassuring to families and could help to explain why many youth eventually seem to grow out of the disorder," research team leader Dr. Philip Shaw, of the NIHM Child Psychiatry Branch, said in a prepared statement.

The study was published this week in the online edition of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

These findings support the theory that ADHD is caused by a delay in cortex maturation, the researchers said. They plan to investigate the genetic roots of this delay and methods of promoting recovery from ADHD.

Chowing down on sugar free strawberry and lime flavored bubblegum twelve hours out of a twenty four hour day is bad for the cerebral cortex.

Or so I've got to assume. All that rampant mastication must have aggravated my brain-gland.

I hiphopbop to Fat Freddy's Drop as the night draws in, my mouth tastes of summertime says MR, tippy tapping accross the tile in Bathroom disgrace, delcious Bedready undress. He kisses me before I scrub down the toothypegs with mentholated LSD. But it's no good. I wish I dreamt of MR. All that flavor has gone to my brain CRAZYLIKE. I dream of skydiving ducks, oddshaped vegetable salesmen and wonderful afternoons spent pogosticking naked through Central Park.

It wouldn't concern me, except I went onto the Sugar-Free variety to smooth my REM. What a waste. Back to full-sugar jucification tomorrow.

Chiu and others researchers at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston carried-out studies with high-functioning males with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) using fMRIs.[1]

Of the many symptoms that characterize those who have been diagnosed with an ASD, probably the most prominent one is the inability to properly respond to social signals emitted by other individuals. The goal of the study was to form a neural standard basis set for the cingulate response and use it to assess the responses of the ASD group.

Using a previously well studied multi-round trust game, the study found that high-functioning ASD males “lack a neural activation pattern in cingulate regions previously shown to encode robust self-specific responses. In stark contrast with the missing self response, the ASD cingulate cortex responded normally when shown a social partner’s decision.”

During the game responses were measured just after the individual takes his turn (self responses) and measured again after the individual learns the action his partner has taken (other responses). In both control groups, the age and IQ adjusted group and the behavior adjusted group, the cingulate cortex produces a response for both the self and other responses. See Figures 1 through 4.

In the ASD group, the cingulate cortex produces a response for the other responses, but a severely diminished response for the self responses. See Figure 5 and 6.

Figure 5. Image shows the response along the medial bank of cingulate cortex after the revelation of a partner’s decision (‘‘other’’ response pattern) for ASD adolescents (n = 12).*

Figure 6. Image shows the subsequent response along the medial bank of cingulate cortex following the submission of one’s own decision (‘‘self’’ response pattern) for ASD adolescents (n = 12).*

The study’s authors suggest the reason for the intact other response “may reflect cingulate functions related less to intuiting others’ social intent than observations of others’ acts.”

The inability of individuals with ASD to represent the social intent of their own behaviors by delineating “their own intentions are likely unable to attribute the social goals or intentions of others.”

The diminishment of the self response varies inversely with the assessed symptom severity, suggesting its value as an objective endophenotype.
