I have been using Moodle for two years, developing online learning communities for public schools.  In addition to creating virtual classrooms, where teachers can provide extended learning opportunities to students, I build online Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), helping schools deliver ongoing professional development and create environments where teachers and administrators can exchange information, communicate, and collaborate when it's convenient for them.

One of the things I did not like about teaching was the faculty meetings.  There was never enough time to discuss all the issues and topics that were discussed got grazed over because there was always a lot on the agenda.  Teachers went because they were mandatory, but there was no guarantee that anything useful would come out of them.  They were additionally flawed because they were usually in the middle of the week and at the end of the day when everyone is most tired.  In online PLCs, however, teachers can collaborate when it's convenient for them.  If someone needs help creating an assessment, a forum posting can be sent out to one's peers to solicit feedback.  If a teacher is having a hard time with a student or a group of students, a quick instant message heads up will inform colleagues of the situation before too much time has elapsed.

In most school districts, due to union mandates, principals do not have that much latitude when it comes to choosing when, where, and how to conduct faculty meetings, but I would like to learn more about this.  Larger schools, of course, do not have full faculty meetings that often, but weekly department meetings take their place.  While online communications will never replace the need for human interactions, what if schools could host some of their faculty meetings online instead, allowing teachers to participate when it's convenient for them? What would be gained? What would be lost?

There are millions of forums and places to get great information, but sometimes you just can't seem to find them.  Or you're not sure what to search for.  For example, "Do I want to have a blog or setup a content management system?"  You can get a ton of information on either topic or one of the great open source tools, but sometimes you just need a little help to get started in the right direction without searching around the www for a day or two.

Developing this blog has been educational and inspirational -- I find myself constantly looking for information to distribute or knowledge to share using it. I have used it twice as an educational repository and tool: once for an English class at DeVry University and another time for my UCSB Extension course. Both times enabled me, and my students, to explore the power of blogging on multiple levels.

¿Y para qué sirve un CMS? Resumiéndolo muy mucho se podría decir que para administrar fácilmente una página web sin necesidad de actualizar todos los archivos HTML cada vez que se actualice el contenido del sitio.

I cant believe it already the end of summer!  I've been so busy with work and travel, I almost had to double check my calendar because I cant believe I was writing "September" in the title of this post.

In terms of the website, there has been a lot going on in my life that got in the way of my progress, (or that I have allowed to get in the way) but I did finally start a much needed site update, changed hosting, CMS and shopping cart providers this week.  The website has a completely different look now.

The hosting and CMS is with Pappashop (I wrote about it last month) and the cart is with Mal's e-Commerce.  Though the site isn't completely finished and my store isn't officially opened, I'm glad I was able to complete that part so that I can move forward with offering products.
