The Future of Internet Security

The growing menace of Internet crime is really astounding. Phishing. Malware. Spam. The volume of attacks and deceptions are extraordinarily high. Estimates of the number of personal computers which are controlled by botnets range from 12-30% of connected computers; these hundreds of millions of machines are then harnessed to attack servers, mine the net for personal data or any number of other nefarious activities. No longer is hacking the pursuit of curious tinkerers or bored teens. Today an entire industry, estimated recently by Gartner to be worth $3.2 billion in 2007, has arisen to sell malicious computer activities.

Cybercrime takes advantage of both the generative nature of the net, poorly written code and user ignorance. Like all crime, cybercrime has brought about attempts to regulate the Internet, and often these regulations err on the side of caution and over-regulate, limiting beneficial activities. Rampant copyright infringement brought about the DMCA which tried to limit illegal song-swapping, but instead has been used to silence critics or sue adorable kids. And, most likely, it hasn't done a whole lot to stop copyright infringement.

What is at risk with Internet crime is a similar course of events. In briefly reviewing Zittrain's book, Lessig poses the question:

“Whether a single event, or a coordinated event, whether intentional, or accidental, it is simply a matter of time before a catastrophic network event happens. And when it happens — think of it as a kind of i9/11 event, but the bad guys are not Al-Qaeda — will we be prepared for the inevitable iPatriot Act response? Are we better prepared than civil libertarians were when we were hit with the USA Patriot Act? Have we even framed the right debate?”

Arguably this over-regulation has already started to take place, but it could certainly get worse. To help flesh out some of the important ideas about the future of cybercrime, the Publius Project has commissioned three essays.

Michael Barrett, head of information security at PayPal, writes that the impetus for regulation of cars and airplanes were prominent accidents. Paul Starr tells a similar story in The Creation of the Media about the beginning of radio regulation. Following the sinking of the Titanic, the Radio Act of 1912 required all radio operators to be licensed, all ships to have transmitters and allocated bands of spectrum for certain purposes. Barrett thinks that cybercrime will have the same effect that the Titanic did and be the cause of serious government regulation of the Internet. In fact, he welcomes it as an important part of the interconnecting regulation needed from government, private industry and users.

First of all, it is not clear that cybercrime will be able to have the dramatic effects that a sinking Titanic did. Many of the threats from online activity, especially identity theft, are well-known and publicized. Others are becoming more publicized, like Internet-facilitated espionage. These cybercrimes will not necessarily serve as the shock that government needs to begin regulation. But, let's say there is an event or series of events which are powerful enough to induce government response, like Barrett welcomes and Lessig fears, is that the right response?

Cybercrime, as best we know, is not centralized. There is no capital city to bomb, leaders to sanction or even mob boss to imprison. As security expert Bruce Schneier says, even the alleged Chinese spy-hackers are not controlled by the state. So, what the cyber-police or other government regulation would be up against is a distributed network of criminals - a classic starfish - and one does not combat decentralized organizations in the same manner as centralized ones. As The Starfish and the Spider points out, to beat a decentralized foe, in this case, cybercrime, one must decentralized oneself, centralize the opponent or change the ideology. In this light, Barrett's assertion that "it’s quite possible that a new global governance organization is needed" seems misguided. While I welcome his support of a shared responsibility between stakeholders, I am fearful that calling for government regulation may be regrettable.

Instead, the words of Internet guru David Clark seem more nuanced:

So the starting point for improving the state of Internet security must be a social dialog, not just a technical dialog, about what sort of Internet we want. The challenge to the technical community is not to build a very secure Internet—that might be more of a price than we actually want to pay. The challenge is to find clever ways to give us more security without taking away our freedom of action. And finding these better solutions will require a design process that involves both technologists and social observers, because it will take both technical imagination and social imagination to conceive of a different Internet from what we have today, more secure but still suited to our desires for open, diverse access.

This social dialog should recognize the power of defaults and architect a security-bias. Beau Brendler, in his essay, embraces this by calling for simple solutions which "nudge," to use Sunstein and Thaler's expression, users towards more secure computing. Provide free anti-virus software and simple-to-understand security manuals, for one.

But if these soft-power solutions are to emerge, they had better do so quickly because while mainstream media rhetoric on the issues may border on panicked, those who know best are worried, too. And if we are to save the open, generative net, it will need saving from both itself and outside regulation.

Superhero, Anugerah atau…?

Menjadi superhero bisa menjadi salah satu impian kebanyakan orang, terutama untuk anak-anak yang masih dalam proses pencarian identitas. Dulu (maap buat orag-orang yang alergi dengan kata “Dulu…”) sewaktu kecil begitu banyak tontonan superhero yang ditawarkan baik melalui TV maupun video (jaman aku kecil belum ada vcd, dvd, blue ray, tapi layer tancep ada, koq) yang selalu menjadi bahan obrolan yang menarik di sekolah setiap penayangan episode baru. Bahkan hafal gerakan dan mantra sang superhero, yang kadang saking menghayatinya berusaha ikut gerakan akrobatnya yang bisa berakibat fatal, cacat, atau mati.

Setiap superhero memiliki kelebihan dan kelemahan. Kondisi itu yang membuat tiap orang berbeda cara memandang dan mengidolakan. Well itu memang pilihan dan kecocokkan masing-masing pribadi, tergantung dari sudut mana dan tentunya ada motivasi tertentu dalam menunjuk superhero yang berkesan. Sebenernya apa sih yang membuat superhero menjadi super special ? Well, secara umum kalo dilihat sepak terjangnya mereka punya sesuatu yang tidak dimiliki manusia pada umumnya, kekuatan super, teknologi canggih, keren, dan selalu menjadi idola dari setiap orang-orang yang pernah ditolong. Sebenarnya secara fisik kadang si jahat juga memiliki kelebihan yang gak kalah dengan sang jagoan. Cuman satu yang membedakan memang si jagoan rela berkorban untuk kebenaran dan keadilan, tapi sebaliknya tidak. Well, tapi kadang terlalu sulit untuk menghayati satu sisi yang paling berperan ini, sehingga yang terjadi malah sebaliknya. Begitu mendapatkan kekuasaan, kadang orang bertindak sebagai si jahat yang tidak pernah puas dengan apa yang dimiliki.

Akhir-akhir ini aku mulai mengikuti serial superhero yang cukup memberiku banyak pelajaran tentang kehidupan. Smallville, tontonan superhero yang dikemas romantis. Mulanya, sebagai laki-laki normal, motivasi awal ngikutin serial ini adalah karena bintang utama maupun bintang tamu wanitanya selalu cantik dan sexy, kalo dipikir-pikir emang kaya film warkop sih, tapi setelah ngikutin alur ceritanya, dan sedikit mendalami karakter tiap pemeran utamanya, menurutku film ini emang layak tonton karena ceritanya yang natural (kecuali masalah kekuatan super), tidak dibuat-buat, layaknya kejadian yang sering terjadi di sekitar kita. Dan di sini ditunjukkan sisi lain dari kehidupan sang superhero, Clark Kent alias Kal-El cikal bakal Superman, yang selalu mengalami konflik batin antara tanggung jawabnya menjaga keselamatan bumi dengan pribadi dia sebagai makhluk yang memiliki hati dan rasa ingin diterima.

Clark sejak mendarat ke bumi diasuh oleh pasangan keluarga Kent yang sejak lama merindukan momongan. Terlepas dari masalah skenario dan kehendak Tuhan, bayi alien ini memang jatuh di tangan yang tepat, di asuh oleh orang-orang yang selalu menggunakan hati dalam berpikir dan bertindak. Bagi semua manusia asli bumi pribadi Clark Kent menjadi pribadi yang sempurna dan ideal, tentunya bukan bagi semua orang. Pribadi ini memang sangat dihindari bagi kaum jahat, karena justru malah dianggap lemah. Ternyata seorang Clark Kent pun dianugerahi rasa untuk mencintai, Lana Lang merupakan gadis yang beruntung mendapatkan anugerah itu. Bagi kaum Krypton ternyata sifat emosional cinta dan kasih sayang justru merupakan sifat yang harus dihindari karena akan membuat mereka sulit bertindak rasional. Seorang Clark Kent yang berdarah Krypton telah terkena “racun” dari bumi ini.

Kehidupan Clark yang selalu dikelilingi kasih sayang membuatnya dilemma antara tanggung jawab dan rahasia kekuatannya dengan rasa ingin diterima dan dicintai selayaknya manusia normal. Seorang Lana Lang yang juga menyambut cinta Clark Kent ternyata sangat menghargai nilai kejujuran, di satu sisi Clark Kent tidak akan membongkar rahasia tentang dirinya hanya untuk mendapatkan cinta dan pujian dari Lana, tetapi justru dia selalu berusaha untuk menutupinya demi kebaikan dan keselamatan orang-orang yang dicintainya. Meskipun dengan resiko dia harus berbohong kepada Lana bahwa dia tidak mencintai Lana dan merelakan Lana pergi meninggalkannya. Namun begitu dia selalu berusaha ada untuk melindungi Lana dan orang-orang yang dicintainya. Jor-El, sang ayah kandung, selalu mengingatkan melalui suaranya di dalam “fortress”, “Kal-El kamu tidak boleh terlalu terbawa oleh sifat manusia, kamu harus fokus pada takdirmu untuk melindungi umat manusia..”. Kal-El selalu membantah peringatan ayah kandungnya yang justru malah berujung pada masalah baru yang semakin kompleks, karena sebagai Clark dia cenderung untuk selalu menyelamatkan orang-orang yang dicintainya, di sisi lain karena dia mengabaikan perintah sang ayah, dia malah membuat bumi dan seluruh umat manusia dalam ancaman bahaya.

Sebagai penonton kita mungkin gemas, nyesel, bahkan dongkol melihat kelakuan Clark yang seperti itu. Ya itu karena kita tahu apa yang akan terjadi ke depan, kita mungkin bisa menebak jalan ceritanya. Namun jika kita bertindak atau mengalami langsung dalam kehidupan sehari-hari, bahkan sebagai Clark Kent, tahukah kita apa yang akan kita lakukan? Bisakah kita memikirkan kepentingan orang lain lebih daripada kepentingan diri sendiri? Akankah kita gemes, nyesel, dongkol melihat kelakuan kita jika seperti itu? Well, menyalahkan memang hal yang paling mengasyikkan, karena kita akan merasa lebih daripada pihak yang disalahkan. Dan parahnya kita kadang lupa untuk melihat ke dalam diri dan tidak menyadari bahwa kita juga sering berbuat salah sama seperti orang-orang yang kita salahkan. Dan ternyata setiap karakter dari Smallville juga sering melakukan kesalahan yang sama dan bahkan sering menyalahkan seorang Clark Kent yang berkorban demi mereka. Begitu melihat ini, sekali lagi kita akan ganti menyalahkan orang-orang yang tidak tahu berterima kasih kepada Clark Kent. Dalam hal ini satu sisi yang harus diperhatikan sikap BIJAK dan RENDAH HATI dari seorang superhero yang tidak pernah menunjukkan jerih payahnya, melakukan tanggung jawab tanpa pamrih. Itulah benar-benar karakter superhero yang membedakan dengan sang jahat. Dan ternyata kita semua dianugerahi untuk belajar menjadi seorang superhero tanpa harus berpenampilan keren dan memiliki kekuatan super. Tapi juga berpeluang menjadi si penjahat yang selalu berusaha tampil baik secara fisik dan mencari pujian orang.

Well itu adalah sebuah pilihan….

3 hours later and 3 hungry kids

Yesterday, Clark and I took on the task of registering our vehicles and getting Texas licenses. Let me tell you ---- it's a big deal down here. Maybe it's because I've only ever lived in 1 state and maybe most states now require all of this to get licensed in their state, but geez lousise!

*first you have to pass a state emmisions test to even get your vehicle registered

(mine passed--Clark's did not b/c of a parking brake he has NEVER used, therefore he cannot register his vehicle until the problem is fixed---oh yeah it's not a cheap fix either)

*then you have to take the certificate that states your vehicle passed to the tax building to register it

This was going well until we discovered we had to have ouir insurance declaration page faxed to the tax office to prove we carried enough coverage for Texas standards. Fortunately we were able to get ahold of customer service and they immediately faxed it over and yes we had plenty of coverage. So, $200 and 40 minutes later my vehicle is officially registerd in Texas and now will bear Texas plates. And we're off-----------to the next stop.

*next you have to go to DPS to wait in that line and get your driver's license

So there we stand for an hour or so with our applications, old driver's licenses, birth certificates and social security cards. Oh, yeah the kids are being really good, but definitely getting antsy. So anyway, it's my turn---I give her all of my stuff, pass the eye exam, get finger printed, sign a piece of paper and my license will be on the way. However, the same was not true for Clark. We didn't have his birth certificate in posession, but we had a hospital certificate----no, nada, didn't work. So, hopefully we can figure out where his birth certificate is (hopefully his mom has it) if not we'll be ordering a new one so we can be Texans together.

Anyway, between the driving, paperwork, and waiting this whole process took 3 hours yesterday! Daddy did a little bribing and told the kids if they were good he would treat them. He stood true to his word---he treated us to Chinese for lunch! Sure beats PB & J!!!

I re-activated my Netflix account just so I could watch Batman Begins before Friday. I feel like I'm 6 again. For whatever reason (I'm guessing it was the costume), Batman was always my favorite superhero growing up. Superman didn't appeal to me -- he had no secret identity, he was afraid of rocks, and he lived in a world where no one was smart enough to realize Clark Kent was one session of lasik surgery away from being the "man of steel."

He didnt't impress me. Bruce Wayne? Now that dude was forreal.

At the Aspen Ideas Festival former (thank god for term limits) President Bill Clinton was talking about Nelson Mandela and threw in a dig at John McCain. Fox News reports, '“It’s just like if you know anybody who’s ever been a POW for any length of time, you will see you go along for months or maybe even years, and then something will happen and it will trigger all those bad dreams and they will come back, and it may not last 30 seconds,” he said.'

First, fairy tales and now he is talking about people and their dreams. What is Bill Clinton now? Mother Goose? We know he is the baby in the family because Momma Hill has to come and act like the grown up saving him from his troubles.

Now what is next? BIll Clinton explains how Obama must have some attachment disorder because his father left him? Guess Bill can relate to that one. I thought a McCain/Hillary campaign was going to be civil. Oh that's right. SHE LOST!

If this was just Bill Clinton I would say this is him trying to undermine the Obama campaign. However, first Michelle Obama, then Wesley Clark, then Jim Webb, and now Bill Clinton. Does Obama have no courage to go after McCain on his own? Where is the messiah now with his oh holier than thou politics? How many times must the Obamas go after McCain on his character? Well I guess when your negatives are that low you must make the other guy look bad. Right from the Clinton playbook. I thought it was about the issues Barry.

The Second Monthly Music Round-up

Happy July! I took a long weekend from posting, but I'm back. Promise. Hope all you red-blooded Americans had a very good fourth of July. Thanks to everyone who came out to the inaugural Party Garbage night. Kendall and I were very happy to see everyone. Sorry if the fog got a little excessive, I forgot to turn the machine off occasionally. You know it made things totally awesome, though. Hope to see everyone the next time we do it. Haven't got a date on that yet, but you'll be the first to know when we do.

Seeing as its the beginning of the month, what better time to have our second music round-up? This month we have a collection of more fun. Hopefully there will be a few things you'll enjoy, a few things that will validate your tastes, and all things that will make you feel a little funky in your working environment. Let's get it started, shall we? Boogie bumpin' after the jump!

First up is a cover. This is one of those songs that you go into fully understanding that there it is inherently a novelty song. A electro cover of "Horse With No Name?" Totally silly, but oddly compelling at the same time. I don't really care who you are, but everyone kinda loves America's original. The one problem with it is that it's hard to dance to. Thankfully A.Human has got you covered. This is off of their new album "Third Hand Prophecy." Just a little what-the-hell to get things started:

On the docket next is a pair of tracks from Studio. I was having trouble deciding which song I was going to put up here. Ultimately I says to myself, I says, "what the hell, I only do this once a month! Why not put two up?!?!?!" So that's what you're getting. The first track is their reworking of Shout Out Louds' lovely summer-dream song "Impossible." In a rare occurrence, the remix is actually shorter than the original. The second song is off of their totally amazing and atmospheric album "West Coast." It's tough to pick a song off there, especially considering that my favorite one is sixteen whole minutes long. So I picked my second favorite, "West Side." I know these guys have gotten a bit of buzz here and there, but more people need to listen to them. I really want to see them live, and that will only happen here in the states if more people show some interest. So get on it!

As some may know, I have an unhealthy obsession with Clark, the meticulous electronic musician. His album "Body Riddle" has stood firmly in my top five albums for a long time, amidst a constant flux of others moving in and out. I wont ever post anything off that album, so you'll have to get it yourself. That album works best played in order and as a whole. If you do pick it up though, I promise you won't be disappointed. Your heart will be squeezed out of your chest by the time the one vocal sample appears during "The Autumnal Crash." But dammit don't skip to that song right away! Just trust me. Today, I'm posting a song off of his "Throttle Promoter" 12". This EP stands as the bridge between "Body Riddle's" cavernous lullabies and "Turning Dragon's" destruction-disco. This here is the first track off of "Throttle Promoter." It's called "See See."

Alright, that song gets a little harsh, let me try to ease things up a little bit. There's currently a bunch of french folk who are making music, and who also seem to love synthesizers and 80's music as much as I do. Now, I'm not talking new-wave 80's music. More on the end of 80's synth movie scores, Tangerine Dream and late-era disco. As a group, or perhaps collective, these hommes go by Valerie. As bands they go by names like Minitel Rose, College, Anoraak, the Outrunners, and Pony Pony Run Run to name a couple. The lovely thing is that you don't have to be french to be part of Valerie, they seem to welcome anyone who has the same unity of vision as they do. That unity of vision being Tron imagery, shimmery synths and a love of sci-fi. Head to the Valerie blog for a better understanding, but I'll set you up with a couple of my current favorites. Today I'm sharing Minitel Rose's "Better Days (Part II)" and Anoraak's "Nightdrive With You." Enjoy 'em. "Nightdrive" has a really amazing ending. Well, to me at least. YEAH!

Alright, this post is getting a little out of control....one more, I say. How about one to really chill you back out as you return to your daily tasks? This track comes to courtesy of Dondolo. I know little to nothing about this guy. I stumbled across his album "Dondolisme" last year and got a little obsessed. It's got the synth tones and construction that I love. It also doesn't take itself too seriously. This song, "Let Your Daddy Sleep" is just one of the gorgeous slow-jams he's got on this thing. Just let it wash over you, it's beautiful.

I'm back (with more poems and wallies!)

Hey people. I'm still jetlagged and my sense of time is totally messed up after a month in America and a 15 hour flight back to Bangkok (we'll continue on home to Australia in two days...that's another 7 hours on the plane), but I'm finally back and glad to be so. America was...interesting, but I'm loving what I saw of Canada more =P They are a good looking bunch, as shallow as that sounds. I'm not surprised Kristin's Canadian, although I didn't get a chance to visit Vancouver, unfortunately. Maybe next time.

There were good moments in America too though. I caught on after a few times asking where the 'toilet' was and receiving strange looks as the sales assistant raises her eyebrow and goes "restroom?" Haha. You guys have some nice restaurants/cafes/bakeries/etc. though. Very generous on the servings. And shopping, wow. I just wish I had more time in San Francisco and NY.

Well look at me go on. Here's two poems and some clana wallies. For the person who requested other wallies, they will be coming along once I'm back in Australia, so don't worry, I'm not blowing you off. I'm a very reliable person, thee most if you ask my friends =)

Clark Synagogue Program Promotes Healthy Living

CLARK—Temple Beth Or, Beth Torah has announced a new outdoor program of fitness and health, which draws on modern day nutritional guidelines and spiritual and historic precedents.

According to Cantor Steven Stern, who helped organize the group’s kick-off event on June 29, “our purpose is to inspire our members to follow a healthy lifestyle of good diet, regular aerobic exercise, and stress reduction. This not only makes medical sense, but is what the Jewish tradition has taught throughout the ages”.
Before a brisk walk around Union County’s Rahway River Park, Dr. David Goldstein, a member of the TBO congregation and a noted pulmonologist, lectured the group on the latest health benefits of exercise on human physiology, and touched on the benefits of proper nutrition. The inaugural event attracted dozens of walkers of all ages, who were then subdivided into three groups according to fitness level and participated in a mile walk around the park.

Drawing from the past, Stern notes that in the 12th century, Moses Maimonides, a prominent physician and sage, taught that “exercise is the main principle in keeping one’s health and in the repulsion of most illnesses”. A forerunner to modern preventative medicine, Maimonides noted that, “exercise removes the harm caused by most bad habits, which most people have.”

Another influence on the program comes from the teachings of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, who drew on the Kabbalah and other spiritual teachings as he stated, “working up a sweat removes from the body polluting fluids and that removing the pollution which leads to depression, brings joy.”

Besides exercise, nutrition is another key element of the program. Dr. Goldstein noted it is common knowledge that a person should eat a well-balanced diet. Choosing the right types of foods within major food groups can positively affect health. After the walk, the group met for a healthy brunch of whole grain breads, eggs from free range chickens, Israeli style health salads, humus, fresh fruit, low fat cheese, and yogurt. Absent were typical breakfast fare of bagels and cream cheese, and trans fat laden pastries.

Legion Post Sponsors Boys State Delegates

CLARK—American Legion Clark Post 328 sent 6 boys this year to the New Jersey American Legion Boys State Program at Rider College.

Three boys from Clark and Cranford were selected to participate in this event. The goal of Boys State is to educate and train the leaders of tomorrow in understanding one of this country’s most precious freedoms, the democratic for of government. Boys State strives to “educate our youth in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship.”

The program promotes understanding self-government, a rational approach toward the solution of public issues, and faith in the ideals and processes of democracy. A complete program of educational and recreational activity is provided during a one-week course in June, which started in New Jersey in 1946 and now has nearly 900 boys attending every year.

The three delegates from Clark were Michael Bonaccorso, Daniel Dugan and Lance Wildorf. The three delegates from Cranford were Joseph Diaz, Robert Poland and Jonathan Van Ostenbridge.

who are Montana-appointed guardians of our baby. They have no paperwork filed in the State of California and no legal adoption papers filed in the Napa Courthouse.

Prior to this, the baby had also been maliciously concealed by the perpetrators for approximately eight months, for which we also have proof.

Amazingly, Napa County is not concerned about this crime whatsoever. After confirming the facts of the carrying-out of the adoption to Bill Jabin and Yountville law enforcement on Monday, June 9th, we have been ignored and even blamed for the crime.

Sergeant Berg of Yountville indicated that the criminal abduction and illegal conspiracy was our fault because we are bad people and that he was going to do nothing about it. Bill Jabin has ignored our concerned phone calls for four days.

Harry Martin has been informed, and Neil Bowman Davis, the Family Law Facilitator at the Self Help Center in the Napa Courthouse, was informed. Regarding concealment alone, the District Attorney should have picked up charges on this months ago, since Napa County authorities were aware of the crime months ago.

We know for a fact that if this crime was perpetrated by low-income people, the system would have completed a child welfare check the first day that such a report came in. But the conscientious Napa County authorities did nothing. This is due to the corruption and favoritism of the rich in Napa County.

There has been not so much as one simple child welfare check at the Feeney's house to verify Jeffrey Funes report that our child is there. In fact, there has not even been a single police report taken with a number assigned to it by Sergeant Berg or the Napa Police, who were also called on June 9, 2008. It is illegal not to take a police report and assign a number to it when a crime is reported.

We are going to expose this matter. We have many ways of doing this which include the use of the Internet. The information we have includes all correspondence made with authorities, non-confidential paperwork, and incriminating e-mail evidence.

Obviously, upon the report of an abduction, a police report should have been taken the first day, and a welfare check completed immediately. Upon finding the child where he reported to be living at this time, the parties should also have been arrested and required to show any and all paperwork they have concerning any legal tie to the child (which of course would be fraudulent).

We are, quite frankly, appalled by the irresponsible, uncouth behaviors and attitudes of the Napa authorities, their haughtiness and evident favoritism toward the wealthy, and the lawlessness that they are endorsing through their negligence. Apparently they have some type of strange agenda given the fact that if our facts were incorrect, Jabin should have already called and verified this.

There is no need for a lengthy investigation to resolve this.

We are requesting your assistance in bringing an end to the perpetuation of this serious crime since you have the power and influence as Mayor of Napa, Mayor of St. Helena and Mayor of Yountville and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, President George W. Bush to make this happen.

We have already informed the guardians of their violations of the U.S. Statues which are:
