Oh, it rained this morning! :D For about 45 minutes and filled up our waterhole and our animal water tanks. It hadn't rained in so long the leaves on the trees were starting to turn brown, the ground was super hard, and our water tank in the barnyard (which we use for getting the animal's water) was just about empty.
And.. umm, our neighbors are attempting to burn leaves which are in a big hole (which most likely has water in it..) after we just got all that rain. Right now they're just puffing white smoke. LOL.

Levi and I cleaned the duck's pond -- somewhat. We got a lot of the leaves and mud out of it. This is what it looks like right now:

And this is a little bullfrog that allowed me to get close and snap his picture by the edge of the pond.. If anyone hasn't figured it out yet, I love taking pictures of frogs. :P

I don't think I've introduced my favorite little hen to anyone yet. She is one of two hens that have dark colored feathers for her head and light colored for the rest of her body. In all, she's a very pretty little hen and does like to be held. :) Her name is Parakeet because when she was real little she used to perch on my arm.

And she follows me around and I can catch her very easily!

On Wednesdays and Thursdays I'll be tutoring McKayla, which is the little girl I babysit, in her reading. Her 1st Grade Teacher at her school is convinced she's slow and needs help learning her phonics (spelling?), so her grandmother hired me to help her with her reading. Mom is going to help me out a little and we're going to try to make it fun for her. :)

For her own reasons, she decided to attend my alma mater. I'm not sure why she chose the same college I did, though I speculate that her justifications weren't all that different from my own.

I chose Fresno State because, at the time, it was relatively cheap, it was easy to get into and, as an afterthought, because it had a pretty great marching band. Depending on who you ask, it still does.

I'm not sure whether or not to be flattered that, in some part, she's following in my footsteps. She joined the marching band, full of too many old acquaintances to count. Her room is in my old dorm, even if she's on the other side of the building. Her ARD is my first ex-girlfriend.

I only worry because, years ago, she had made a habit of following in my footsteps. The way Dad tells it, my sister was my biggest fan back when we were both in the single-digits, and it didn't stop until she hit adolescence. I'd hate to think that we're falling back on old habits --- among other things, college is about piecing together self-sufficiency, not about throwing it out.

Even if she did choose my alma mater for the sake of following in my footsteps, the argument is moot. She's there now, and, God willing, she'll earn her degree sometime during Obama's re-election campaign.

For her own good, I should be and will be letting her make her own decisions. I can only hope that she makes more friends, burns fewer bridges and earns better grades than I did.

I imagine the adults in our lives feel the same way.

Despite my excitement for another triathlon, I overslept this morning and missed my window of opportunity to run.  Plus, another rainy day here in the Sunshine State has put a damper on any desire to exercise.  UGH!  Rain makes me so lazy and I am really enjoying my pajamas today.  Once again, I am tempted by my couch and Twilight.  I must fight the temptation and pay my friend, Sharon Mann, a visit to kick this chick in shape for the chaos challenge I face next month.  Besides, I need to do something to avoid eating the banana bread and The Hungry Housewife's Winning Lemon Loaf I baked today.  My badunkadunk butt thanks you, Leslie.  Pass the fat pants and hand over the cookie.

Cincinnati Zoo Announces Hatch of King Penguin

On July 30, the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden’s king penguin chick hatched. Two week-old “Kyoto” becomes the 2nd successful king penguin ever to be hatched at the Cincinnati Zoo. The mother, Bebe, laid the egg on June 6 and shared incubation with the father, Larry, for the next 54 days.

Once the chick pipped, or broke through the shell, on July 28, the Zoo’s Aviculture staff transported the egg in a portable incubator to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center’s (CCHMC) Veterinary Services Lab for further evaluation. Dr. Gary L. Keller, Director of CCHMC Veterinary Services Division and R. Scott Dunn, CCHMC certified magnetic resonance (MR) technologist, used Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to monitor the development of the king penguin embryo. This type of 3-D imaging is invaluable to the Cincinnati Zoo in the investigation of the incubation of king penguin eggs and the micro-climate needed in captivity.

After two hours in an open MRI chamber, the egg was transported back to the Zoo where it hatched two days later on July 30. The father, Larry will continue to brood and feed “Kyoto” for another week until the chick is transferred to a temperature-controlled chiller unit set at 55 Degrees F. inside the Zoo’s Nursery.Both the Nursery staff and Aviculture staff will share the hand-rearing duties, feeding Kyoto approximately every three hours six times a day. Since a chick would never be left alone, a plush penguin will be placed with the chick to simulate a parent, who would normally be in a burrow caring for its young. The presence of the plush also minimizes the chance of the chick imprinting on humans. At feeding time, keepers will place the plush penguin in front of the chick, who vocalizes—a signal for the parent to feed the chick.

The chick will receive (via a syringe) a “fish milkshake” that consists of ground fish, an electrolyte supplement, and vitamins. As the chick progresses in age and weight, the amount of formula it receives will be decreased and the amount of fish and the size of the fish it is fed will increase, until it is able to eat whole fish on its own.

Penguins have been studied for decades, allowing us to monitor the health of their ocean environment. Climate changes, particularly the effect these changes have on the oceans, are a leading factor in the decline of several penguin populations throughout the southern hemisphere. Other factors leading to death and low production of penguin offspring include oil pollution, over-fishing and the introduction of new species. Four species of penguins are facing the immediate threat of extinction. A majority of the seventeen penguin species have continued declined in numbers over the last 30 years. Continual monitoring and conservation efforts are needed in order to save these fascinating animals.

Currently there are approximately 2 million king penguins in the wild. Only 15 zoos in North America have king penguins and the Cincinnati Zoo’s Wings of the World exhibit .is now home to seven. They are one of the few penguin species that continue to do well in the wild. King penguins can be found throughout the southern hemisphere on sub-Antarctic islands. King penguins enjoying eating a variety of prey; however, they prefer small fish and squid. King penguins are the second largest penguin species, growing to be about 3 feet tall and weigh over 30 pounds.

So, as all readers deduced from my last post, getting here was a bit of a train wreck.  I did finally make it, and my flight wasn't bad at all, as I got the emergency row (again.  I always get that row), with lots of extra leg room, and sat next to a super cool Canadian chick who reminds me of a girl from back home.

I didn't sleep much, and that came back to bite me as I became so physically exhausted that Jane had to literally steer me home at the end of an evening of fruitless flat searching and some really good pasta.

So, those stories aside, which are actually pretty fantastic, I'm almost a week later, settled into a very cozy room in a Victorian house in Hackney, right across the street from a park.  

The neighborhood is, I'd say, 90% Hasidic Jewish Russian families, which makes me feel safe walking home at night (as they don't seem to keep modest hours) and only moderately awkward walking out in the morning if I'm wearing, you know ... normal clothes.

I just got the internet this morning from the incredibly cute Lithuanian guy downstairs, (thank all that's holy) and my job hunt is now in high gear. 

Now for the Good Stuff:

• First of all, to my friend Ian, who commented to Jane's post yesterday, you should know that I didn't even feel the slightest twinge of home sickness until I read that, and I've been periodically getting all mushy ever since.  Your guitar lovin' woman misses you too.  Now upload those damned pictures from my last night at the club.
• I got an email from Jenna this morning that absolutely blew my socks off.  I don't have details, but apparently (APPARENTLY!) Guitar Guy broke up with the Girlfriend, while he was on that little vacation I mentioned, during my last week in Orlando.  What the holy Eff.  
• I'm feeling incredibly conflicted about this whole Guitar Guy thing.  I suppose it deserves a post unto itself, but damn.  
• Damn.
• I haven't seen Royce yet, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time.  He was away for a few days in Scotland as soon as I got here, and actually the time Jane did call him to see if he wanted to meet us, he was with his own Girlfriend.
• With any luck, Royce and I will have a frustrating series of flirtations for the next six months, and as soon as I'm on a plane to Australia or wherever I'm going next, he'll realize his relationship is a joke, and become single again.
• BECAUSE APPARENTLY THAT'S JUST HOW THESE THINGS WORK.

Well didn't I have a good weekend. I was lucky enough to have a day off on Friday due to some kind of staff professional development day (which is just code for a piss up). I took advantage of this day by catching up on some much needed sleep rising well into the afternoon. I fully rocked out to the Opening Ceremony before rocking out some more to the new Coldplay video for Viva La Vida. Managed to squeeze in a little bit of homework on Saturday before train hopping my way up to Melbourne. I had a wonderful journey on the train with many colourful characters jumping on at around the Moe station. My trip was made even better because these sik lads were perfectly impersonating Trent from Punchbowl (Youtube it). I got into Flinders at around 8 PM and had to wait around with all the emo's for the big Chris Bordonaro to arrive. Upon his arrival we rocked it around Crown for a while before going to see Pineapple Express. This movie rocked. It was like Superbad crossed with a dope plant with a Cameo appearance from a Daiwoo Lanos. I suggest you see it. Afterwoods we went and got a kebab from a small place called Uncle Joe's. It was pretty good but they didn't mix the meat and salad intogether like they do at Mr. Funny Kebab.

Stayed at Ant's place cause we went to the RMIT Open Day the next day. I saw heaps of people from down Sale and Bairnsdale way. Also heaps of asians. After uni we went around the city seeing the sites, the most exciting one being a fare evader that got beat down by the law. Got stuck sitting next to an asian lady on the bus to Dandenong before avoiding getting stabbed for a while before taking the train back to Bairnsdale.

Well that was my awesome long weekend, hope you got a kick out of it. And remember, tell your friends, especialy your hot, sexy, female friends.

 I tried converting some English into Russian to see if it could cheer her up a bit. At one point she actually responded to me by mouthing 'So Boring' in response to my Russian question.... Why does she do this? Why settle for the lamest of all lame conversations? Damn I hate all this intrigue. At one point she even 'vicked all the people in the room. I don't understand. I feel completely confused. I feel like I want to help her. Some advice? A bit of a friendly conversation? There's playing around on World of Warcraft and then there's THIS. It's a different league of time wasting. And so young and pretty; is Russia Latvia that dooming?

However, for the few who enjoy pornography, I have heard there's quite a lot of money to be made from such a market. In my opinion it is completely flat technologically. Its as if Web 2.0 never happened. Why is this? Actually I think I know why but its a personal secret I do not wish to share at this point. 

Aside from spinoff sites like 'PornoTube' etc, there just isn't any real innovation. One of the sites that did impress me however, was a popular 'Cam Girl' site called xxxxxx. Essentially you cough up cash for ladies on demand on a minute by minute basis. I imagine it's quite addictive, and I thank my obsessive compulsive disorder concentrating on a different (free) aspect of it. 

To cut a short story long, I've 'checked the talent' so to speak, and the ability to store favourites helped me stay in touch with the ones who most appealed. I love kooky people and kooky things, and one girl just seems to kook me to fucking death. 

Why is she different? Well, on a site dedicated to falseness, usernames generally include the following: "sexymomma" "youngandhorny" "sexonabeach" etc. Some of them a fairly inventive but they are never crude. This girl stands out with "FFS". To the point! First point of intruige. 

Each girl has her own profile page to fake to perfection. Again 'FFS' takes it to the extreme. Coming in between 6'3" and 6'6" she could take on Chuck Liddel and open a can of whoop ass. She's be giving away a few pounds at just 205lbs but i'm sure the PPV would be pumping. 

I love the voyeur aspect of xxxxxxxx. I could spent hours people perving, but thankfully I have a job to do. Most of the girls barely speak English. The public chat rooms are full of 'guests' who basically aren't old enough or clever enough to get a credit card. This is the element of xxxxxx that I hate. Why oh why to the girls subject themselves to rants of 'show your tits' and 'your ass looks tight can i take it for a ride?' etc.. Its painful to read, and I do hope none of the girls get offended by them. The chat from the members is much more adult in general, and generally complimentary to which ever girl they are worshipping. 

Anyway, I've enjoyed reading her slams of people. She's using the site a lot like a live chat room, but i'm completely baffled as to why. Most of the chat is pointless, and the girl is often on there for hours at a time. Anyway, after quite a while I bothered to engage in some of the 'conversation'. My entry point may have been the xxxxxxx version of a chat up line. It goes something like this *cough* 'hello I would love to pvt but don't have many credits left'. Basically i'm stating that I can't be arsed to pay for all the boring stuff. We hit it off real well...

Great. Busted. Hang on, why do I feel bad? This is the right site? Yes, garish site is in front of me. OK. There's a little tag cloud at the bottom. Some usual examples are 'anal' 'tits' 'fetish' etc, and show what the girl would be 'up for'.

UPDATE: The story continues/ends sort of. I had a brief chat after pretty much being ignored on my first return to the room. Penis stories are a no-no! Today however, for the first time ever something was wrong. I was typing a sentence and hitting enter. Business as usual. Except it was not. Nothing was coming up. Everyone else was chatting away while I seemed muffled. Can the Cam girls do this to someone's account to keep freaks away? Am I a freak? Then all of a sudden all the words appeared. Great, i'm a paranoid freak. Or am I? To make it just a little weirder - she said a comment which I can't remember, but the bit I do could be interpreted as a jab at someone's account you've messed with.

There are basically 3 age groups of fowl; chick, young fowl, and mature birds. To match these 3 groups there are 3 different feeds; starter, grower, and finisher. (I know, I didn't mention layer feed, but I will discuss this later) All you need to do is match the feed to your fowl's age.

Now, what if you have several different age groups of chickens all together? Ok, this is simple, just feed them all the feed you would give the youngest birds in your flock. If you have adult birds with chicks, feed them all starter. If you have adult birds with young fowl, feed them grower.

What about my laying hens, how do I get them the calcium they need? Layer feed has the extra calcium that hens need to lay. The problem is, that the extra calcium is not good for roosters, young birds that aren't laying, and chicks. The solution to this is to feed them all like I described above, but provide a dish of oyster shells for the hens that are laying. This will allow the hens to get the calcium they need, without the rest of your flock being forced to eat it like they would if you used layer feed.

What about grit? If your birds are on the ground, whether it is free ranging, or in a run, they won't need grit. If your birds are not allowed access to the ground, you will need to provide grit to them for proper digestion.

What about treats? Treats should not be a regular part of your birds diet, but if you feel you must, try things like green vegetables, grass clippings, and fruits. Corn should be used very sparingly as it is high in fat, and low in nutrition. Corn should not be used in the summer months at all, because it will make your chickens over heat trying to digest it. On the same note though, whole corn is a good supplement in the cold months, because it will help keep your birds warm.
