More information on cheaper solar energy , is this the way to go? I have thought about moving toward

More information on cheaper solar energy , is this the way to go? I have thought about moving toward solar power for years but just was held back by the cost and what a chore set-up would be like in an older home like we have. But now it is looking more interesting everyday. And I am seriously looking into this alternative energy source. I will keep you updated on other cheaper solar resources as I find them.

SendTec has generated unprecedented consumer response for Power-Save's new line of affordable, consumer-ready solar energy systems via a direct response television (DRTV) campaign. Power-Save Solar systems are designed to simplify solar energy implementation in the home, creating the most cost-effective solar solutions on the market.

St. Petersburg, Fla (PRWEB) August 8, 2008 -- SendTec, Inc. (OTCBB: SNDN), a leading multi-channel integrated direct marketing agency, has generated unprecedented consumer response for Power-Save's (OTC: PWSV) new line of affordable, consumer-ready solar energy systems via a direct response television (DRTV) campaign. Power-Save Solar systems are designed to simplify solar energy implementation in the home, creating the most cost-effective solar solutions on the market. Launched in June 2008, the DRTV campaign produced by SendTec has exceeded even the most aggressive expectations, surpassing performance goals by 80 percent.

"Green is hot! We developed a breakthrough DRTV campaign that, instantly tapped into the insatiable demand for green products that save money on the consumer's sky-rocketing energy costs," says Paul Soltoff, CEO of SendTec. "The market is hungry for information about products that not only save money but also promote sustainability. Rather than simply selling a product, the campaign SendTec designed aims to first educate the consumer on how it is now financially feasible to enjoy the benefits of solar energy in the home. SendTec is gearing up to market other Green products this year and expects similar successes".

A premier retailer of renewable energy and energy savings products, Power-Save produces solar energy systems that utilize your home's existing power grid. With simple installation and no need for a battery, Power-Save solutions are an accessible alternative for the average consumer. In the past, cost has acted as the major deterrent to these types of applications. However, Power-Save Solar systems qualify for a range of government incentives which cover up to 100 percent of the system's installed price in many states.

According to the 2007 Statistical Review of World Energy, the U.S. consumes 23 percent of the world's energy and significantly trails other major countries in the adoption of solar power. "Combining advanced technology with the easiest to implement package on the market, Power-Save has made solar energy a viable and affordable solution for the masses," says Michael Forster, CEO of Power-Save. "By leveraging an in-depth knowledge of DRTV, SendTec has been an invaluable partner in spreading our message."

The SendTec-produced DRTV spots are currently airing on multiple national cable stations, promoting the Power-Save 1000 through 6000 Solar Systems. All six complete, ready-to-install systems are Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and California Energy Commission (CEC) listed.
You know, this is why I got worried when they cast Reynolds. He's too much of a pretty boy to play a man who was the head of a Dead Pool. This guy would never rob Agent X's pancreas...

I watch the most pointless TV ever. And, you know what, I like it. I don't have to get involved in plots or characters. I don't have to DVR episodes to keep up (because they typically repeat pointless TV episodes ad nauseum). I can just watch, and my mind goes numb. It's pretty neat. Here's what I've been watching lately:

10. Kathy Griffin My Life on the D-List - good one liners
9. Flippin Out - when you need a little OCD
8. Shear Genius - bad hair day? See more horrific hair than your own
7. Project Runway - creative and catty
(Jeez, I wonder if cable has a package with just Bravo)
6. I Love Money - or any type of Rock of Love, I Love "So and So" - Reassurance that while your day-in-day out may be a little boring, at least it's not pathetic
5. Best Week Ever - weekly news without the panic
4. Most shows on Foodnetwork EXCEPT: anything with Racheal Ray flailing, or Paula Deen on speed. I also tend to keep it 'notch-free'.
3. The Golden Girls - yep, that's right - I find the writing very funny, IMHO
2. Everybody Loves Raymond repeats - dose of daily dysfunction
1. Wipeout! A new show for the summer, and it's perfectly mindless. Complete idiots getting themselves tossed and thrown like rag dolls on an insane obstacle course, and all the while they're being totally ridiculed by the commentators. Score!!!

This Wired blogger argues (with backup from the human quote machine, Robert J. Thompson) that the problem with the broadcast networks is that "you may hear dirty words or see an exposed buttock online or on a cable program." This strikes me as a case of letting the story's premise dictate the conclusions even when there's no real evidence for those conclusions. (Which is something every blogger does sometimes, of course; the temptation to make the argument you planned to make is sometimes too much to resist.)

The content-restrictions issue just doesn't seem to matter as much now as it did a few years ago, for the simple reason that many of the most interesting cable shows are on basic-cable shows that don't allow nudity or swearing. Battlestar Galactica, as one of the Wired commenters points out, has no content more explicit than the word "Frak," while Matt Weiner keeps giving interviews about how, no, he doesn't mind not being allowed to have characters swear out loud on Mad Men, or having to cut away when characters start having sex. Meanwhile HBO bombed with Tell Me You Love Me, which was marketed as the network's attempt to raise the sex/nudity factor on TV. No, it didn't bomb because of the sex/nudity, it bombed because it bombed; the point is there's no clear co-relation between the success of cable shows and their freedom from content restrictions. As I've argued in the past, that may be a worrisome sign for HBO, that their freedom from censorship is no longer translating into the most interesting, cutting-edge shows winding up on their network.

Over on Broadcast, there's still lots of post-Janet-Jackson restriction on content (it'll be a while before we can freely see Homer Simpson's butt the way we did throughout the '90s), but whereas a few years ago the networks really seemed hampered by the huge amount of censorship, now it's not quite as clear that they are. Partly because a lot of their cable competition comes from basic-cable shows that aren't all that much freer in terms of content than the network shows; partly because (as I've said in an earlier post) many big Hollywood blockbusters have become so clean that they make broadcast TV drama look shocking by comparison. In any case, the censorship restrictions seem to matter less than the creative restrictions. Which is not to say that I wouldn't like to see broadcast TV be less heavily censored; I would, but I doubt that would solve the current crisis.

My overall plan was to use over-the-air (OTA) ATSC digital for the networks–gotta have ND foot

My overall plan was to use over-the-air (OTA) ATSC digital for the networks--gotta have ND football home games, still working on the away games...--and use Hulu, iTunes Store, Netflix Watch Instantly and Bittorrent for anything else we might be looking for.

The impetus really came from our observation (my wife's and mine--I swear I'm not forcing this on her) that when we had a loaner laptop in the house, we spent more evenings online together in the kitchen than we did in front of the TV together. This held true during the day when I was at work as well, when she would surf instead of flip channels or plumb the DVR. And, I began to notice that my 3-year-old was much more interested in Leapster games, Lego Star Wars on the PC, or PBSKids website than TV. Even when he used the TV, it was mostly for DVDs or DVR'd shows he'd watch over and over rather than cable shows. My 7-year-old did watch a lot of TV after school and homework if she wasn't playing with a friend, but I often thought that was because all the other computers were already in use by me, my wife, and her brother.

So it seemed that the extra $700 or so a year we were paying for cable beyond freely available ATSC OTA was mostly wasted. We decided to invest in a new DVR setup (the old one was fading fast) and a cheap laptop for my wife. Total cost of the new HTPC case and parts, the new laptop, and a Lego Star Wars disc for the PS2 so the youngest would not always be using the upstairs desktop was around $900. So we figured we were simply spending money we would have spent anyway this first year, and now we're off to the races.

Generally advertising frequency does make a a difference. In most cases it makes a big difference!

Generally advertising frequency does make a a difference. In most cases it makes a big difference! There are a number of factors that must be considered in putting together your advertising program. What media mix are you considering? Can one media give you more exposure than the other? What are your advertising goals? Finally, who are you trying to reach (what is your target demographic profile) ? What is your advertising budget?

In order to answer the first question, does advertising frequency make a difference, all of the other questions must be addressed? There are a number of factors to consider when you are putting together an advertising plan. Ultimately you must decide where you will place the bulk or the lions share of your advertising budget?

Today the choices are numerous and fragmentation is the norm. Fragmentation is when there are so many choices that there is no guarantee that your ad will be seen by your target audience at any given time. A good example is cable television. There are so many specialized cable stations that you can choose a station that will suit your demographic profile. For instance if you are targeting women the Lifetime Channel appears to be a good option. So one would get out their credit card and place as many high frequency ads as possible on the Lifetime Channel in order to reach your target audience. After all the station targets your demographic. Right? Wrong!!

What about radio? WHFA (W-High Frequency Ads) radio, reaches your exact target demographic, is the pitch that you hear. In drive time you can run three, 30 second spots during morning and evening drive time. This is a can't miss buy, sure to be heard by nearly everyone in town! On paper these two buys seem logical cable; radio........ On paper that is, but in reality it is not.

The reality is, though both mediums reach the desired target audience, and high frequency ads placed on both should insure it, the truth is you are reaching less than 2% of your target audience. No matter how many ads you place on the selected media you will never reach the entire percentage of the demographic that makes up your target market. Why? Because radio and cable combined reach on average less than 4% of your target audience.

A staunch advertising rule is that frequency pays. Yes it does, but only if you select the medium that can reach more or a higher percentage of your target audience quickly and efficiently. This cannot be achieved with cable television. It cannot be achieved with billboards; you only reach as many people driving by in cars as possible. It cannot be achieved through television; there are hundreds of television stations available, so you will not get 100% reach of your target audience, but you will get 100% fragmentation, which destroys your advertising program!

An example that I like to use is if you're thinking about painting your home during the dead of winter, you're excited about spring arriving so that you can plan how and when you will paint your home. You begin to start thinking about it. What type of paint will you need? How much will it cost? The company that will get your business will be the one that advertises early and often when the consumer is ready to purchase the paint product, guess who gets the business? In a thin market it is the company that runs the same ad most frequently, early and often.

Well, I have had a bad run of computer luck lately. Last week my Mac (pictured here when my kitty, Smudge, was littler) died. I was able to reinstall everything from the discs, but it took all day long and of course, we didn't recover quite everything. Still, I'm grateful.

Then last Friday we switched from our phone company to a voice over IP phone system. When they asked our old phone company, which shall remain nameless (A-cough-T-cough-&T-cough) to transfer over the phone number, the phone company also cancelled our DSL service without letting us know. So the next day we had no internet and no phone. When we called to complain, they said we could get stand alone DSL from them, but it would take 5-7 days for them to get a technician to our house. Turns out this company has a record of doing this when customers switch to VOIP. I can't imagine it helps them to keep any customers, at least for DSL. I called my local cable company. They beat the price by $10 a month for slightly faster service, and they had two techs at our house in less than 24 hours. After a few growing pains, we are back online.

Cablevision’s Dolan family is weighing its options again. But while the chill

By Scott Moritz

Cablevision's Dolan family is weighing its options again. But while the chilly credit market puts some boundaries on the scope of the Long Island cable company's options, some of the more likely moves include a dividend and a spinoff of its Rainbow Media unit, say analysts.

"We arrive at the view that given the current state of the credit markets and $1.7 billion in maturities [Cablevision faces] next year, the company’s options are fairly limited," Goldman Sach's analysts wrote in a research note Tuesday.

Shares of Cablevision (CVC), the No.6 cable provider, shot up 7% Tuesday on word that the company was exploring moves to enhance shareholder value. Holding about 20% of the company's stock, the Dolan family has a keen eye on trying to extract more value for the stockholders. The Dolans have made three failed bids to take the company private, but with the lack of big financing available at the moment, another take-private move is probably not in the works.

Most likely is the sale or spin off of Rainbow, the holding company behind TV programming including AMC, WE and IFC. In February, the Dolans were shopping the media unit around but target buyers like Liberty Media (LINTA) didn't bite.

If Cablevision and its bankers can't find a buyer for Rainbow, the company may spin the unit off to shareholders and, with the sale, toss in new debt to finance a dividend, say analysts.

"We believe the company could institute a regular dividend on the order of $1 per share," Goldman's analysts say. The $1 annual dividend would be within reach, costing Cablevision about $280 million, or 34% of the company's free cash flow in 2008, according to Goldman.

A bigger special dividend is less likely since the company would have to seek financing to make a sizeable one-time payout.

The move comes as Cablevision, along with Comcast (CMCSA), Verizon (VZ) and AT&T (T), all face increasing expansion costs and cutthroat competition.

Official word on the hold-up is that a thorough open source audit mired the SDK in testing much longer than expected. The good news is, because the Motorola tool is built on open source, customers don’t need to worry about any other third-party licenses.

I'm sure the suspense was killing you all weekend. We did end up signing our lease on Friday. The apartment is great, the carpet is brand new. We spent all Saturday and Sunday moving all our stuff in. The apartment has stairs, stairs and more stairs. We are going to have buff legs pretty soon. We have signed up for Dish Network, but it won't be installed until next Monday. Until then I've left my TiVo at my parents house to record what we're missing. Last night we watched Heat from Netflix as our weekend movie. It was really long though (nearly 3 hours), and I fell asleep on our new couch before the end. We got it because The Dark Knight is supposed to be influenced heavily by it. I was expecting everyone to stab each other in the back and start shooting each other like the opening scene of Batman, but it never happened... at least
in the part that I saw before I fell asleep.

It's a really strange feeling being on my own for good. I wasn't expecting it. My mom and sister came over for a little while last night, and then they left. I'm not used to having a place that's mine, but I'm loving it. It is so cool to be living with my best friend... so far, ha ha.

I was trying to sign up for internet today, but through AT&T you are required to get a land line phone, and long distance, with taxes that and extra $25 a month for something I'm never going to use. Not to mention the $46 connection charge for the phone. So I haven't signed up for it yet. I still need to compare prices to Comcast.

Motorola shipped 1.04 million DVRs in Q1, followed by 1.32 million DVRs in Q2.

HD set-top shipments were at 1.37 million in Q1 before jumping to 2.02 million in Q2.

To date, Motorola has shipped more than 78 million digital set-tops total.

Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of great things happening with tru2way that will lead to certain cable applications being embedded into other CE devices. That’s not a bad thing for Motorola, incidentally, because it means the market for broadband services should continue to grow. But in the conceivable future there will always be a role for set-tops. After all, who wants to buy a new TV for every hardware upgrade?

When Sebastian Periochearrived at Harvard to start work on his M.B.A. 12 years ago, he was shocked.

When Sebastian Periochearrived at Harvard to start work on his M.B.A. 12 years ago, he was shocked. Everybody in Paris had told him Boston was one of America's most cosmopolitan cities, but he could hardly find a theater screening the films of Claude Chabrol, Pedro Almódovar or any of the other European directors he liked so much.
'I used to always say to everybody, `With all these cable channels, there ought to be one where you could watch foreign film,' '' he recalls. 'And they would say, `What a great idea!' ''
Such a great idea that Perioche finally tried it himself. And now his video-on-demand brainchild Eurocinema is in 20 million homes and adding half a million more every month -- and doing it by defying practically all conventional wisdom about the tastes and habits of American television viewers.
The channel, headquartered in a Brickell Avenue high-rise, offers no movies in English, no movies that have won Oscars -- in fact, just about no movies that anybody in the United States has even heard of. In a day when everything in television is built around marketing, this seemingly perverse thirst for obscurity is nonetheless paying off. Eurocinema is now available on Time Warner and Charter cable systems across America as well as DirecTV's satellite service and will join the Dish Network satellite lineup next month. (Comcast, one of South Florida's largest cable carriers, does not offer the network.)
''We play some movies that have been in American theaters,'' says the 35-year-old Perioche. ``We have Summer of '04, the German drama that played a little bit here. But we don't run many of those. The idea of Eurocinema is to bring new stuff, stuff that people haven't been able to see.
``We're trying to take advantage of the limited availability of foreign films here. In New York or Los Angeles, it's easy to see foreign films. Denver, or even South Miami, not so much.''
OBVIOUS CHOICES
So seemingly obvious choices for a foreign film channel -- say, La Vie en Rose, which won Marion Cotillard an Oscar this year for her portrayal of French chanteuse Edith Piaf, or The Lives of Others, a Best Foreign Film Oscar winner about the fishbowl life in Stalinist East Germany -- won't make it to Eurocinema. The channel's buyers scour European festivals and back away from any movie in which channels like HBO or Sundance show interest.
“Our objective is to provide service to real foreign movie fans underserved by television,'' says Larry Namer, head of the channel's Northeast operations. ``If a movie is on HBO, wonderful, but then what's the point of us carrying it?''
The channel does try to feature some familiar faces from time to time, digging up films with stars well-known in America that somehow failed to find distribution deals here. Notable example: Amantes, a Spanish film featuring Victoria Abril, who built a U.S. following in the movies she made with Almódovar. Or Ellis in Glamourland, a Dutch take on My Fair Lady with Joan Collins in the Professor Henry Higgins role.
But even when the face is familiar, the film almost certainly isn't. ''You take 10 movies made in Europe, and maybe three are really good,'' says Perioche. ``Of the three, one will probably be picked up for distribution in the United States. And that leaves two very good films that won't be seen here. Those are the ones we want, even if nobody's ever heard of them.''
So a viewer tuning in to Eurocinema will find such fare as Vinci, a Polish crime-caper film that won awards at several European festivals in 2004; Kira's Reason, a 2001 Danish drama in which a woman returns from a stay in a mental hospital to find her husband having an affair; or Corrupted Hands, a 2001 Iranian comedy about wedding planners who rob their clients.
Iranian films are a relatively new addition to Eurocinema, and an example of how the channel's marketing has expanded in unforseen ways.
''We designed this to be a foreign-film fan channel, targeting people with a previous disposition to watching film with subtitles,'' says Namer, 59. ``But one of the things that popped out is that the nature of immigration has changed so dramatically. My parents came to America from Spain via Turkey, but in front of us they would speak only English -- everything was geared to becoming Americans really quickly.

``But immigrants of the past 20 or 30 years are concerned with maintaining their linkage to their home country and passing that linkage on to their children. We found an audience of Iranians who wanted to see films in Farsi, and we're catering to it.''
Being a video-on-demand channel allows Eurocinema to provide films to smaller constituencies without boring everybody else -- a customer picks from 20 to 30 movies available on the channel at any given moment (for $3.95 a pop -- ''less than a gallon of gas,'' notes Perioche) and can simply ignore those that don't pique interest.
Perioche, who was making his living in international trade before he finally found the financial backing for Eurocinema, originally envisioned a regular 24-hour television channel. But he changed his mind after joining forces with Namer, a cable-TV veteran (he founded the E! Entertainment network).
`FUTURE OF TV'
''Doing it this way not only costs about a 10th as much, it's the future of television,'' declares Namer, who believes that conventional -- ''linear,'' as he calls it -- television is in its death throes.
''I worked for a while as a consultant at Microsoft,'' he says. ``And I became a great believer in storing programming on disk drives -- big ones on the transmission end, which is what video-on-demand channels use, or small ones on the receiving end, like TiVo -- where the viewer can watch it whenever he wants.
``Eventually all linear television will disappear. Why should I care about what somebody at NBC thinks about when Frasier should be on? It should be on when I want it.''
Meanwhile, Eurocinema will put all that expertise it has acquired in scouting European film festivals in sponsoring one itself -- the Romance in a Can festival scheduled for Valentine's Day week in 2009. It will feature two dozen foreign-made romance flicks. ''They make a lot of romantic films in Europe,'' Namer observes. ``The difference between theirs and ours is that sometimes in theirs, people die.''

If you own a DVD or VHS recorder purchased before March 2007 it may contain an analog “NTSC

If you own a DVD or VHS recorder purchased before March 2007 it may contain an analog "NTSC" tuner. Why does that matter? Because when the FCC's long-anticipated analog-to-digital deadline arrives in February 2009, your DVD recorder or VCR may not work the way you are accustomed to: set the program, load a blank DVD or VHS tape and let the recorder's built-in timer tune to the station on which the program airs. That's not the only change consumers should anticipate, either. Come February 17, 2009, cable subscribers who do not have high definition television sets or compatible recording devices will either end up with a temporary analog feed, effective through February 17, 2012, or an all-digital feed necessitating digital-to-analog conversion boxes designed for cable subscribers who use analog components.

If all this sounds confusing, it gets worse.

After the switchover, those who intend to use a DVD, DVR or VCR recording device containing an analog tuner in conjunction with a newer HDTV or HD-enabled satellite or cable box may be in for more heachaches than anticipated. Depending on a component's date of manufacture and whether or not a digital-to-analog converter is used, the option to record onto an analog-style device may no longer exist.

In order for your existing VCR or DVD recorder to communicate with your HD satellite or cable box, a digital "ATSC" tuner is a necessity. Your VCR or DVD recorder must send a signal to your cable or satellite box telling its tuner to change to the station you wish to record on a particular hour, day and date. The problem is, digital tuners were not widely available in DVD and VCR recorders — nor adequately marketed to inform the public of this necessity — before a FCC mandate requiring digital tuners went into effect March 1, 2007. To go on using an analog DVD recorder or VCR, you will need a cable or satellite box that is capable of analog output.

While the current crop of HD satellite and cable boxes have, for the time being, preserved the ability to record onto analog devices, analog recorders are incapable of changing the channel on an ATSC satellite or cable box. So while it may still be possible to program an analog recording component to turn on at a particular date and time, it may not be as convenient. Setting each device to the correct channel in anticipation of a recording session may become a necessity. If you forget to do so, or attempt to watch one channel when a recording is set to begin on another, you may not record what you set out to capture in the first place.

There's no telling how long support for analog recording devices will continue, but it is doubtful that HD cable, satellite or TV sets built after 2012 — little over three years away — will emphasize backwards compatibility. Hooking up an ATSC-only cable or satellite box — or for that matter, an ATSC-only HDTV — directly to a NTSC-only DVD or VHS recorder will mean no picture or audio recording at all.

The FCC mandate that ATSC tuners begin appearing in recorders came too late, while decisions to phase out support for NTSC recorders are likely to come too early. Those who expect, for instance, to go on using pre-March 2007 DVD recorders until they wear out, hoping to get an additional 4-5 years of use before going "all digital", probably shouldn't count on it. By the same token, if you intend to gradually incorporate HDTV and/or HD cable or satellite as opposed to being forced into the costly position of upgrading all components simultaneously, the time to begin looking into your options is now. Go on using your standard definition TV, cable or satellite box for too long, and the next generation of HDTV or HD cable or satellite equipment may lack backward compatibility.

Of course, those who watch only off-air broadcasts using an analog TV and so-called rabbit ears will require only a digital-to-analog converter. This set-top converter, which for acceptable reception ought to be connected to a compatible roof or attic antenna, can be hooked up via a splitter to a conventional analog VCR or DVD recorder, and will be capable of switching channels without disrupting your ability to watch another program providing that you purchase a second converter box. A dual converter box setup is one way for off-air viewers to go on using familiar analog TV sets alongside an existing VCR or DVD recorder with minimal expense.

When contemplating the decision to convert from analog to digital gradually or radically, here's something to keep in mind: If your analog style VCR or DVD recorder already has a lot of mileage and seems likely to wear out before you complete the conversion process, anticipate that it may be difficult to locate a replacement recorder that can convert digital input to analog output. That's why taking the plunge into a full HD setup might be better than the alternative: requesting government coupons for digital-to-analog converters, a subsidy program that provides up to two $40 discount coupons per household. So while it is tempting to hang on to conventional cable, satellite and soon-to-be obsolete analog TVs, VCRs and DVD recorders, the advantages are likely to be short lived.

Personally, I can't shake the frustration of discovering that not one but two not-so-ancient DVD recorders in my home lack the necessary digital tuner despite FCC rumblings of such conversions as far back as 1995. Why were manufacturers permitted to go selling analog-only TVs and recorders knowing that as few as two years post sale they would lose much of their functionality? It seems hardly coincidental that I'm left with nearly $400 worth of lightly used, near-obsolete equipment that wasn't accompanied by warnings on product packaging, in user manuals, by retailers, mainstream media or the FCC. Each of us have had ample time to to realize that VCRs are going the way of the 8-track tape. Not so much time to wave DVD recorders, less than three years new, goodbye.
