I hope you never run into a situation where your Mac does not boot fully into the finder, but when you are, you can be assured of not having a bootdisk handy...

So here's the solution: "Applejack" by Kristofer Widholm

AppleJack is a user friendly troubleshooting assistant for Mac OS X. With AppleJack you can troubleshoot a computer even if you can't load the GUI, or don't have a startup CD handy. AppleJack runs in Single User Mode and is menu-based for ease of use.

You can use it to repair your disk, permissions, validate and fix the system's preference files and clear your (possibly corrupted) cache.

Just download it, install it onto your system disk and the next time you're running into trouble, just fire up the Single-User Mode of your MAC by holding command + s on bootup. Type "applejack" or "applejack auto" and let the magic begin.

I used it on my Tiger System quite a few times and everything turned out A-OK afterwards.

If you don' trust me, here's a list of user experiences with AppleJack.

If you need an in-depth article about troubleshooting your MAC with AppleJack, MacFixIt has a nice article on it.

I'm using "Simplify" for sharing my iTunes library with some people and especially myself on my iPhone.

Unfortunately I recently had some problems getting it to work on my Leopard Server, running 10.5.3.

Simplify support was extremly helpful and blazing fast. Using the built-in Troubleshooting tool, I sent them some logs, the XML of my library and a brief description of the error.

The app was always saying "scanning libraries" and nothing else happened.

Here's the mail from support:

Hello,

Thanks for the heads up and sorry for the problem. Our app is unable to connect through your network, per the error below:

Network Scan Status: NAT test error
Network Type: 0x0 (hairpin = false)

We have seen this on a few other systems running Mac OS 10.5.3, and in all those cases, upgrading the latest Mac OS version solved the problem.

Thanks

It turned out, it's the 10.5.3 that's causing the problem. After an update to the newest 10.5.4, everything is back to normal and works as expected.

Thanks for the great support and keep up the good work!

This evening I encountered an odd problem running firefox on my Mac. I went to Flickr to download a photo of mine to use as a new desktop background. (cc license so you are free to do the same)

But when I went to pop open the downloads window to see the file name to open it, I couldn't get my downloads window to open. It appeared as a window option on the windows menu, but nothing I did would cause it to actually, in fact, be visible.

So I poked around a bit online and then into the innards of firefox a little bit and I found a very simple, few second solution to this problem.

Search for the following file:

downloads.sqlite

It should be present in your firefox profile directory (if you have multiple users on your computer be sure to delete the one from your current user's profile).

I chose to delete it, which had the side effect of losing my download history (which I didn't mind) if you want to preserve that this solution won't be ideal. To delete I simply moved the file from the folder it was in to the trash.

I then closed Firefox (choosing the "save all tabs first" option). Note this is in the latest stable release version of Firefox for the Mac 3.01 as I write this, the "save all tabs first" option is a new one in the 3.0 release.

On rebooting Firefox I was able to open the downloads window as usual, Firefox rebuilt the downloads.sqlite file without what I can only assume was some form of file corruption.

So that is it, a very simple solution in the category of "get rid of corrupt config files".

I just ran the update to 2.0.2 of the iPhone 3G firmware.

Process went smoothly and as far as I can tell, the 3G reception is better. Not even do I get 4 instead of 1 bar of reception quality now, but I can make calls in a part of the house I couldn't before.

I know, this is not a scientific approach... jadajada... but hey, it works for me.

All my apps were still on the phone, all settings in place. Contacts, mail and SMS is much snappier than before and loads almost instantly.

I just have to wait for the jailbreak to get my Intelliscreen back :)

Update:

According to an AP-article the update was targeted to fix the poor reception quality on a 3G network. But there are a lot of people out there claiming it didn't fix anything. Some even say, it made 3G calls entirely impossible. So... back to square one :)

As the development of Quicksilver came to a hold some time ago, and the once rock-solid launcher (yeahh, I know it's way more than that... NERD) gets more and more unstable with each new revision of Leopard, I finally decided to switch to launchbar.

After a week of use (mostly as an applauncher) I can honestly say, give it a try.

Licensing starts at US$19,95 which definitely is a reasonable price.

Get it at:

Some days ago I finished the code cleaning and revision, for at least the data access code, and general code revision. As a result, i found and fixed some minor bugs, and added new code here and there. Squeeze got a new navigation menu to make it look better, this is a transitional change in order to make it more usable and look beautiful, now it uses a third-party (gpl'ed) widget, until I implement my own navigation menu I want.

[caption id="attachment_38" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Squeeze with new Navigation menu"][/caption]

These changes will be available in the SVN repository as version 0.6 in a few days, but not in the tar'ed source code file in sourceforge downloads until i package it and analize gpl ver 3.

As I'm constantly switching between languages, the auto correction "feature" of the iPhone is driving me nuts. And it's no help at all.

Now, here's how to switch it off:

1. SSH into your iPhone (must be jailbroken, use fugu or SSH in a terminal
2. Go to /System/Library/TextInput
3. Rename TextInput_XX.bundle to whatever you like (perhaps .bundle.BACKUP)

The XX stands for your country code. So, you know... use EN for english, DE for german... I think you're getting the point.

And if you want to switch it on again, just remove the .BACKUP from the filename.

UPDATE:

If you want to have some kind of on/off switch for the auto-correction, just try this little workaround:

1. Install a language you don't use, I used fucking french for this purpose.

2. Delete the TextInputBundle for the just installed language as shown above.

3. Now, when you want NO auto-correction, just switch to french or whatever dumbass-language you chose.

Today, inspired by a bit of free time while the washing machine does it's thing I poked at rawhide. Specifically I was interested in why.. once again.. my iPod had stopped working in Banshee. The component responsible for this is Podsleuth, a neat little C# ditty which does all the magic for us.

First roadblock, the new rpm version is stricter with the fuzz so rebasing one patch was required. Then Podseluth needed to be adapted to the new sg3_utils, a simple little patch later and we now compile (many thanks to Dan Horak for pointing out my typo).

Now it still doesn't actually run but the original 2 issues being fixed it now exposes another bug wherein it seems we cannot find HAL on dbus. This I am still trying to figure out but not at all bad for idle poking while I wait for the laundry to finish.

Don't know EXACTLY what happened, but I think after the installation of SHOZU things gone horribly wrong. My phone wouldn't start up anymore.

So here's what I had to do:

1) Connect your iPhone to your computer, make sure iTunes is running.

2) Now turn it ON. You should see at LEAST the backgroundlight turning on.

3) Hold the POWER Button (on TOP, dummy) and the Home button (hmm... which one could this be...) TOGETHER until the screen goes DARK.

4) Now RELEASE the Power button, but STILL HOLDING the home button.

5) iTunes should come up with a screen reading something like "blabla have to restore your blabla"

6) Do whatever iTunes tells you to do.

I completely rewrote registerimage in Python, in order to improve portability between various platform; now registerimage 1.0.3 don't need the libxml2 as in the previous version, because I used the native xml.dom.minidom module from the Python standard library.

This new version only takes two arguments:

The path to the .xml configuration file of the VM you want to add;

The path to the .vdi file of the VM you want to add;

You don't need to move manually the .xml configuration file and the .vdi file, because registerimage 1.0.3 does this automatically.

In order to use registerimage 1.0.3, you need a Python interpreter (version >= 2.5) installed in your system; you can download a Python interpreter from here.

Windows users have to add to the PATH environment variable the path where the Python interpreter is installed in, as shown in this screenshot.

Hi All,

I recently formatted my PC to get rid of a Malware called tavo0.dll. But after that I faced another problem in my Windows. Here is the problem description.

Problem:

When you try to open any of your Hard Drive partitions, the "open with" window will be open.

Solution:

I gave a search in the Google and found the solution for this problem very easily.

Follow the set of commands below to show and delete the autorun.inf

1. Open Start>>Run and type cmd and press enter. This will open a command prompt window. On this command prompt window type the following steps.

2. type cd\

3. type attrib -r -h -s autorun.inf

4. type del autorun.inf

5. now type d: and press enter for d: drive partition. Now repeat steps 3 and 4. Similarly repeat step 5 for all your hard disk partition.

Restart your system and your trouble will be fixed.

Hope this helps for some one who is facing this problem.

Regards,
