"Excuse me?"

I take off my headphones, lower my book, and glower at the guy across from me. He and his friend have been drinking Coors Light from wide mouth cans for the past twenty minutes and their legs kept banging up against my knees. I glance out the window and watch Westchester zip past our train.

"Sorry," he continues. "I hate to bother you. But are you reading that for school?"

I look down at my worn copy of A Separate Peace and raise my eyebrows. "No. I'm reading it because it's a good book."

Now he's caught in a disappointment. "Oh, because I had to read that for school, and I just hated it. I thought it sucked."

"Where do you go to school?" I ask him. His friend laughs.

"Oh, I'm not in school. But I went to school in Scranton." He scratches his knee and sips his Coors. "My name is Peter. And this is Derek."

"Hi."

"Where are you in college?"

"I'm not. I went to Brandeis. Outside Boston."

"Oh yeah? That's a good school. My cousin goes there. She's a sophomore. So I guess you wouldn't know her, would you?"

"Nope."

"What do you do?"

"I'm a publicist for a magazine. What do you do?"

"We're ... in between jobs," Peter says hesitantly. Derek rolls his eyes. "So, I know this is weird, but what are you doing Saturday?" At this point, Derek starts snickering at Peter.

"Saturday?"

"We're actually going to a wedding. Our friend's getting married. He's only 23. It's ridiculous. But he knocked up the girl, you know? So we're going to a wedding in the Bronx. And you should be my date."

"Oh," I laugh and smile. A few strangers in adjacent seats are surrepticiously listening in. "I wish you asked me last week. Because now I have plans."

"Were you on this train last week?"

"No ... I'm going to visit my grandparents for dinner."

"So how could I have asked you last week?" Derek loses it and actually laughs out loud at his friend. Even the strangers start to roll their eyes.

At that point, we reach White Plains. Which is sad, I think, because I really do love weddings. And I bet I could have drank these guy under the table.

What?????? Behaviour... is hard to explain, but now people decided to decorate their towns with old shoes pending from the power cables, exactly the way they used to do to mark drug points in the past or to celebrate a gang-related murder. In Bronx nowadays people still shoefit, and also hang other personal stuff, but the high fever is starting in Madrid. It seems that now people found another reasons to practice shoefiti. Do you think it might be the search for a magic land inspired on the movie BIG FEET?

The ugliest part of Brno can be found around Cejl [street name]. It is the part of Brno where most empty houses can be found. It is the part of Brno that most people have associated with the Roma minority. And sure enough. During a 400-meter walk 20 people walked in the opposite direction and 17 of them were Roma.

Buildings where they live often have piles of garbage in their back yards but at the same time five out of ten windows would have a satellite dish.

However many houses that were empty last summer now have new windows, scaffolding around the front facade, construction workers running around and a poster saying "above-standard apartments for sale".

Experts are afraid that the "ugly neighborhood" tag will soon go to some suburbs that look relatively good so far.

And since every big town must have its ugly part, I am afraid they are right. I just have a hard time guessing which one it is going to be.

Standing at merely 5'11 and 170lbs, Tim Lincecum is easily one of the smallest pitchers in the MLB. But don't let that fool you; his long stride and sharp mechanics will put you in your place quickly. Lincecum had come to the Bronx to make an appearance at the All Star Game on behalf of the Giants, but his jersey and hat hang untouched in the locker room between Ben Sheets and Edison Volquez. His small presence is lacking and I think it is safe to say that his long stride and sharp mechanics will be missed in today's All Star game.

Okay, so Tim Lincecum is in the hospital with the flu, but that's no reason not to be able to play in the game this evening! Right? The 24 year old was hospitalized earlier today with dehydration and flu like symptoms. Lincecum missed the All Star Game Red Carpet this afternoon, so I can confidently say that he isn't faking it. Lincecum is 11-2 in his second year with the Giants, he leads the majors with 135 strike outs, and his 2.57 ERA is 4th best among starters. His arm will be greatly missed in this All Star game.

Hope you get better quickly, Timmy Boy!

Today is a historic moment for all the Yankees fans and the team's home ballpark. The all-star baseball game is going to take place tonight, for the last time at the old Yankee Stadium, before it's going to be replaced by the brand new facility just a few yards away. Ask New Yorkers what they are going to miss about the old stadium and they will tell you that it is a historic site, home to so many beautiful wins and memories. Sure, the tradition is great, but we liked what The New York Times did today - they have asked people most affected by the stadium's archaic amenities - the players themselves - what they won't miss.

"When it rains, the smell that comes up through the drainage system is not pretty,” said Jason Varitek of the Boston Red Sox. The Chicago White Sox’ Joe Crede won't be crying over “Hitting my head on the dugout. Every time somebody scored or got a hit, you jumped up and forgot how low the ceiling is in there.”

Well, as much as we are not baseball fans, we'll miss the stadium, too (after all, it was there where we saw our first and only baseball game). But on a cheerful note, the field where Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio and Reggie Jackson had scored home runs, will now be a place for the youngsters to learn how to hit that ball right. So wipe your tears and be happy for them. Oh, and don't miss the game - it starts at 8.30PM.

Three grassroots organizations have released a new report, "Boom for Whom? How the Resurgence of the Bronx is Leaving Residents Behind" (PDF) documenting the current conditions in the "booming" Northwest Bronx, and the desperate need for jobs for local residents there. The Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition (NBCCC), its Sistas and Brothas United Youth Leadership Program, and the Urban Justice Center's Community Development Project collaborated on the report, which states, "While the borough has recently emerged from a long period of racism-fuelled disinvestment to become a site of major investment, this has done little to improve the lives of those who reside, work, worship, and attend school in the area."

The report explores how to address such concerns by, "raising industry standards, enforcing workers’ rights, and connecting living-wage job opportunities to the local Bronx workforce so that residents benefit from development projects."

The NBCCC is helping make this vision a reality with the redevelopment of the Kingsbridge Armory. As part of the Kingsbridge Armory Redevelopment Alliance (KARA), they are seeking, "living wages and union protections for local residents in the construction and permanent jobs, community space, an affordable recreation center, and environmental protections through the negotiation of a Community Benefits Agreement, a Labor Peace Agreement and a Project Labor Agreement with the developer of the Armory."

Photo of KARA protest at City Hall via the Daily News.

The end of an era arrives this evening in New York, as the Yankee stadium will showcase its final All Stars game.

The stadium has an incredible array of memories from days gone by, and the 1976 season's pivotal moments must have been when during the second game of the World Series, Howard Cosell looked around the New York skyline and uttered (amongst other words), "Ladies and gentlemen, the Bronx is burning!"

The words were in reference to the skyline being filled with burning properties allegedly set on fire, due to efforts to recoup high tax rates through the insurance route.

Of course there are many other memorable moments and I would love to hear them via the comments section.

Sleeping in the Bronx, spent the day in BK... Took the 4 train to 14street and the F train ( no C train running this week end ! ).
Friday, Malaysian restaurant in China town with Frank. Then go to his crib to watch a french movie i never seen before yet, "The child", heard a lot of things about it... Well... Not that good... I imagined that better and with more difficulties to bring back home the baby. Then another movie.. I missed like 3/4 of this movie, but seemed good lol. Dont even remember the name. Then stayed there because it was too late/early in the morning to go back to the Bronx. So i went back to the bx in the afternoon. To changed me before BK hip hop Festival.
Well... Bronx is pretty much as you can imagine. A lot of people in the street, music everywhere, cars everywhere with people inside... Parking cars with cars inside ( yeah normal ) but with the music on lol... Chair on the walkway. Fire hydrant open with the water everywhere on the street.

Oh and those stairs... Well i had a lot of pain again with my stuff...

So i went to BK hip hop festival after a while in the bx. It was a beautiful... Between BK bridge and Manhattan bridge, close to the river...

So i saw KRS-one for the second time, nice time, primo too. Beautifuul people, cute kids, good energy. Then i walked on BK bridge... First time !! lol i took a long time to decide to do it... since january haha. It was the perfect weather to do it tho !

The fact that people still Google my name irritates the hell out of me. Get lives.

And here I am blogging. Funny.

I am going to New York City for a few days later this month. I love Manhattan. I went there last summer and this time the plan is the same: very little on the agenda. I will just walk around. Last year I walked the length of Park Avenue, for example, from Midtown to Downtown more than once. There is nothing like wandering around a place like New York.

The agenda I do have includes hitting Govinda's in Brooklyn as well as other Veg eatries; frequenting dive bars; laying on the ground and looking at the sky; and maybe using the Yankee bleacher seat I bought myself on StubHub. Springsteen is playing New Jersey, but I am not going. I have lost my extreme passion for Bruce. He's no Elliott. Why would I leave Manhattan when I am only going to be there for a few days? (With the exception of quick jaunts to Brooklyn and maybe the Bronx).

This site needs more photos. This trip will contribute to that cause. Any suggestions for what I should do in New York, shoot. I prefer cheap, veg food, and things having to do with music, beer, bikes, and sociopolitical shit.

Black, White, New York you make it happen

Brownstones, water towers, trees, skyscrapers
Writers, prize fighters and Wall Street traders
We come together on the subway cars
Diversity unified, whoever you are
We're doing fine on the One and Nine line
On the L we're doin' swell
On the number Ten bus we fight and fuss
'Cause we're thorough in the boroughs and that's a must
I remember when the Duece was all porno flicks
Running home after school to play PIX * 1
At lunch I'd go to Blimpies down on Montague Street
And hit the Fulton Street Mall for the sneakers on my feet
Dear New York I hope you're doing well
I know a lot's happen and you've been through hell
So, we give thanks for providing a home
Through your gates at Ellis Island we passed in droves

The L.I.E. the B.Q.E
Hippies at the band shell with the L.S.D.
Get my BVD's from VIM
You know I'm reppin' Manhattan the best I can
Stopped off at Bleeker Bob's got thrown out
Sneakin' in at 4:00 am after going out
You didn't rob me in the park at Dianna Ross
But everybody started looting when the light went off
From the South South Bronx on out to Queens Bridge
From Hollis Queens right down to Bay Ridge
From Castle Hill to the Lower East Side
From 1010 WINS to Live At Five
Dear New York this is a love letter
To you and how you brought us together
We can't say enough about all you do
'Cause in the city were ourselves and electric too

Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten
From the Battery to the top of Manhattan
Asian, Middle-Eastern and Latin
Black, White, New York you make it happen

Shout out the South Bronx where my mom hails from
Right next to High Bridge across from Harlem
To the Grand Concourse where my mom and dad met
Before they moved on down to the Upper West
I see you're still strong after all that's gone on
Life long we dedicate this song
Just a little something to show some respect
To the city that blends and mends and tests
Since 911 we're still livin'
And lovin' life we've been given
Ain't nothing gonna take that away from us
Were lookin' pretty and gritty 'cause in the city we trust
Dear New York I know a lot has changed
2 towers down but you're still in the game
Home to many rejecting know one
Accepting peoples of all places, wherever they're from

greetings from the end of a looooooong evening. tonight was indescribable, but i'm sure some thing will be said in a future post. tonight's devotion was spirit-filled and illustrated the movement of the spirit that paul describes when he says in romans 8:26, "Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words."

the following two posts were written before the spirit-filled events of the evening devotion, and no one had the chance to blog anything tonight. hopefully tomorrow will include some reflection upon tonight's devotion.

Thursday was fun, but it was also very difficult. The Staten Island team split into different groups; some went to a Moravian church to sort clothes and to put them in boxes and others went to the soup kitchen. I, on the other hand, went somewhere totally different. Stephen, the Stovalls, and I went across from the church that we are staying at and went to the Hospitality House. It had stories of apartments for the clients staying there. We were given a big job. We were told to dust the whole lobby. Sure that sounds easy, but when we got there, everything was covered with dust, dirt and what seemed like mold. So instead of dusting, we ended up washing everything. We grabbed a ladder, buckets of water, and wash rags to get started. I am extremely short so it was difficult to reach high places like the pipes and the exit signs. We were so determined to get the job done that we hardly took any breaks. When we finally finished it was after twelve and the four of us were the first ones back to the church. We had our lunch and took showers early, because we were covered in dust and dirt. It might have been a hard and serious job, but there were plenty of jokes for us to laugh at and that is what was enjoyable. When we left it was cleaner and a little bit brighter. The color of the lobby was a dirt white color and I hope that they paint it a dark blue, because it would match some of the weird lights in the lobby.

In this work 3 women are greeting each other. The scene is recorded from a fixed camera position, the actions of the figures are seen in extreme slow motion and are presented in a vertical aspect ratio. The entire original event of forty-five seconds unfolds as an elaborate choreography over the course of ten minutes. ......

I saw this work in 1997 at the Whitney Retrospective of his work. I went to see it like 3 times and I drug my father to see it, because I kept talking to him about it. He love it too and he is a very practical man :O)

What did we love about it?? The main reason why this is my favorite piece of his, is that it tickles the mind with it's obvious but not overt reference to Mary the Mother of Jesus and her greeting women in the square. This is purely my interpretation and the artist gives us no verbal or written guidance that supports this interpretation.

But it goes to my theory that you can experience nothing in it's pure form, all your experiences and the interactions are all colored if not guided by your past experiences and when you have strong reaction and connections to anything it is because of these factors.

The beauty and truth I found in Bill's work is that it focuses you on each breath we take in this life and how much we actually miss in our daily interactions. The greeting seconds streched into 10 minutes. With no sound. But I was paralized unable to move absoultely captivated by the silent dialog and information that became so illuminated in that interaction between those three women.

So much so that it is still huants me over a decade after seeing it and it has changed me in that it showed me a truth that I didn't know before that truely even moment counts and means something.

General Manager

New York Yankees

Bronx, New York

Dear Sir or Madam,

I enjoyed my first outing to Yankee Stadium last night to see the home team beat the visiting Tampa Rays. While the weather was hot and humid during the day, the temperature seemed to drop enough by early evening to be tolerable; the ambient air was not nearly as comfortable as the Metropolitan Opera's perfectly conditioned red velvet interior, however. In order to keep attendance up in comparison to rival city institutions, I suggest you factor this in.

I have to say, although my friend who accompanied me was surprised by my naivete when it comes to domestic beers, I also enjoyed my first Genuine Miller Draft, plastic bottle and all, a relative steal at $8.50 for 16oz. It seemed to be a recyclable container, which comes with an added safety benefit: were I to inadvertently throw the bottle onto the field, fewer people would be hurt than by the bat that was nearly hurled into the seats close to third base.

I was also impressed by the accessibility to public transportation. The B and the 4,5,6 line all stopped on the corner, adding to the feel of community as fans traveled to and from the stadium.

Speaking of the stadium, as this is the last season in the "House that Ruth Built", I was a little disappointed by the renovations--apparently done in the 1970s--that effectively destroyed the structure's character and charm. The plastic seating, the electronic banners, the tacky refurbished ceiling made me wonder what, apart from spirits and legends, was worth seeing. I am hopeful that the $1.3 billion of public and private money you are spending on the adjacent new stadium will provide a little more distinction. And perhaps now is not the time to question why public funds are being used to build a stadium replete with luxury boxes and marble.

I cannot remember the last time I enjoyed a $5 hot dog so much. How nice, too, that the spicy mustard came free.

And how surprised I was when, after displaying my ticket at the entrance, I was directed to another security guard who told me that my compact shoulder bag was not allowed inside, even though it clearly contained only books and paperwork. I suppose I was just confused because I saw women carrying in purses the size of my bag. Your security guard seemed almost huffy when I asked if it were true that women could carry purses in, but I couldn't carry my shoulder bag in. "I don't make up the rules," with an aggressive posture really didn't answer my question, so I rephrased it, "No, I'm asking you. Is it true that women can carry in purses?" Hearing the affirmative somehow made me feel better as I carried my bag across the street to the $5 bag check at the bowling alley. In fact, I was thankful for this opportunity as I was able to appreciate actual examples of substantial architecture.

Still, it's puzzling that an institution that accepts public funds can so flagrantly practice gender discrimination. Maybe someday, when the old laminated stadium has been razed, we can talk this over in one of the calf-skin upholstered luxury boxes over a nice glass of pinot noir and some bruschetta, or perhaps jalapeno cheez-whiz nachos.

Very truly, a satisfied patron and fan,

Jonathan

[gallery]If you're a mom here who feels like staying indoors verses taking the little ones to your local park (because it's dirty, too small, simply GHET-TO), you're not alone. I've been in Castle Hill for a year now and I can count on my fingers (without needing the toes!) how many times I've taken the mini me to this park. But you know what, I got the stick out of my ass, and for the last two days I've made the four block walk to the park. My park is small, with just a half basketball court, some swings, a little ass jungle gym, but a sprinkler! And I don’t mind at all since Briana is small and I can read my book from one bench and not have a heart attack because she keeps going out of my sight. Yea I wish I was in Central Park, watching Briana play in the giant sandbox, running from sprinker to sprinkler. But then again, it’s great to be able to drag Bri and her bike, her baby and her baby’s stroller three or four blocks down the block and not have 100 kids running around. Even if all of the parks in walking distance are way out of the question, then find one that's either a few train or bus stops away. Either way, you have to give in and stay local sometimes.

What's your Park?

A Filipino teenager who came to New York so doctors could perform surgery to untwist her severely clubbed feet took her first unaided steps Wednesday in pink-and-white sneakers _ the first shoes she's ever worn.

"I'm very happy," Jingle Luis said with a smile. "It was exciting."

The 15-year-old girl arrived at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx in May with her mother for surgery and follow-up treatment.

She had never been able to walk on her own because she was born with feet so clubbed they twisted backward and upside down, forcing her to hobble on the tops of her feet with the help of crutches.

On Wednesday, doctors took off her post-surgical casts and replaced them with special support braces.

Then came the moment she had waited a lifetime for: She slipped her feet into her first pair of shoes and took several long strides.

The surgery, which the hospital performed for free, involved inserting screws into the bones of her feet and turning them bit by bit to straighten them out.

When the pins were taken out, the feet were straight, but casts were put on for several weeks to keep them that way.

Dr. Terry Amaral, her surgeon, expects Jingle to wear the braces for about a year.

"This is a miracle. I am very thankful to God," said Jingle's mother, Jasmine Luis, who makes a living selling fish door-to-door. Jingle's father is a corn farmer.

Jingle's case came to the attention of Montefiore after a staff physician traveled to the Philippines in 2003 with a Christian relief mission.

While clubfoot is a relatively common deformity, occurring in about one in 1,000 births, children are usually treated in infancy with casts or braces that gradually bring the feet into correct alignment.

Amaral said Jingle's condition was complicated by spina bifida, a birth defect that involves the incomplete development of the spinal cord or its coverings.

Doctors who saw Jingle as a baby thought her spina bifida would shorten her life span and prevent her from walking, so they did not treat the clubfoot, Amaral said.

But Jingle's condition turned out to be relatively mild.

"She's essentially a normal child," Amaral said.

Úrsula Hilaria Celia Caridad Cruz Alfonso, a.k.a.

I didn’t stay awake for all 15 innings of the 5-hour All-Star Game last night. But I did watch

I didn't stay awake for all 15 innings of the 5-hour All-Star Game last night. But I did watch the red-carpet parade, the cheesy introductions, and most of the game through the frustrating 10th, 11th, and 12th innings. It was an exciting day for baseball at Yankee Stadium, even for Red Sox fans like me.

But a lot of us were left with a bad taste in our mouths. Yankee Stadium is still in the South Bronx, right? So why did the red-carpet parade only bring the All-Star players and long-time baseball legends up 6th Avenue from 42nd to 59th Street? And why were all but one of the All-Star statues placed in Manhattan? Is Major League Baseball that ashamed of its Bronx neighbors? This New York Times editorial writer seems to think so: the article points out that there are about 1,000 Little League players in the South Bronx who are some of baseball's greatest fans. These local young people, rather than being ignored, could have at least been given a shot at getting tickets to the game, or even to the home run derby the night before the game.

The home run derby on Monday night did, admittedly, have a community focus—it resulted in $370,000 donated to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, including $50,000 to a branch in Long Island City, Queens.

But many Bronx residents feel they are still being left in the dust. A newly-released report by the Urban Justice Center and the Northwest Bronx Community & Clergy Coalition confirms these feelings, revealing that even though there are efforts to develop the Bronx, unemployment, low wages, and inequality still plague the community to a striking degree. We got word from the West Bronx Blog that youth rallied yesterday afternoon outside of Yankee Stadium to remind the public of the needs of their community, "calling for more and better jobs and emphasizing the stark contrast between the billion dollar new Yankee Stadium and the daily lives of mostly poor Bronxites."
