Recent reports show that Pandora has streamed 3.3 million songs to iPhone users since the launch of its new mobile application. That’s a lot of peeps in a short span of time. Since the new iPhone came out Pandora has registered 180K new users and around 200K new stations have been created on the iPhone alone! Hey again, that’s a lot of peeps. These figures coupled with the continuing robust sales of iPods and their kind means there are a lot of people out there who just by the variety of technology choices aren’t listening to the radio as much… or at all.

Daunting, yes indeed. But I am perplexed but the multiplicity of radio stations that are trying to emulate facets of the iPod hardware and Pandora (music genome) models.

How about these radio offerings:

All request lunch

You Choose Weekends

Radio Impulse

Station WXYZ on shuffle

Stop it… You’re only a cheap façade of what’s going on in the narrowcast pull technology world. You are a broadcaster, a purveyor of push technology. You can’t narrow cast. Well, you could if you bought one transmitter and tower and got a frequency position for every one person who Cumes your station. That’s ridiculous. You’d have a field of transmitter towers that would run for miles. That’s perfectly good land that could be used for a shopping mall or golf course. (Oh, I just kill me... and only me)

Again, you're a broadcaster! Slow, clumsy on-air social network programs pale in comparison to one of a 1000 on-line social networks. All request shows may at best make you temporarily more diverse (if you let it) but in the end each request played (real or fake) only momentarily satiates that one listener until the next selection doesn’t.

Stop it Stop It Stop it! Again, you are a broadcaster. You can’t narrow cast to each individual in the cume. Stop trying to be a tool that you’re not!

You don’t bang nails with a screwdriver, you don’t sweep floors with a dump truck and don’t snorkel with a vacuum cleaner strapped to your back.

As a broadcaster what you do do, can do, should do and must do is entertain. You can’t play the exact right song that one person needs but you can present the music you’ve chosen with meaning, stories, feelings, shared emotions and purpose.

Examples of the top of my head:

“I picked out this track from Coldplay right now because I was in the car with my wife last night and this song came on WXYZ and she started singing along. As she sang the words I fell in love with her all over again”

Somebody help me! So I’m in the shower and I started singing, ”I can ride my bike with no handle bar, no handle bars…”that was three days ago and I can’t stop. Oh God here it is again on WXYZ.

“Is it just me? When I play I Will Posses Your Heart by Death Cab for Cuite… images of Silence of the Lambs and Texas Chain Saw Massacre engulf my cranium. That’s not just me… right?”

“I downloaded it from iTunes and now all twelve tracks are the soundtrack to anything I’m doing…”

“Trent Reznor seems incessantly mad and sad no matter what he’s singing…”

“If you buy the Silversun Pickups CD or download the tracks and you don’t think it’s the best album of songs ever recorded by human beings with opposable thumbs… I will eat this radio station.”

I could come up with 10,000 more but you get the idea. Yeah, that’s right… sharing ideas, visions, feelings, moments of elation, distraction or the painted veil of sadness, etc., etc...

These are the things that the broadcaster can do that Pandora or your iPod cannot. Music delivered with meaning is so powerful that it can take over the mind. If we’re talking the battle for mind share then I can’t think of anything more important than finding entertainers who can engage a listener. As they used to say, "A mind is a terrible thing to waste." That's true now more than ever.

Usually, I find myself griping about one thing or another on my blog. It is often sadly true that

Usually, I find myself griping about one thing or another on my blog. It is often sadly true that bad news outnumbers or outweighs good news. Today, however, I read a great story. In fact, I cannot think of a thing that would make me much happier than the news I read today. World peace would be nice, but I don't know that I would put it above this news. Cheap gas might slightly edge it out, but maybe not.

So what is this most momentous news? Bryant Gumbel has been replaced on the NFL network football broadcasts this year. I get heady just thinking about it. There has never been a poorer broadcaster in the history of broadcasting, and I include the 'boom goes the dynamite guy' in this. At least Brian Collins of Ball State knew that he was sucking. Bryant Gumbel, on the other hand, brought the added irritant of being an arrogant ass to go with his ignorant and distracted commentating.

I had high hopes for a very professional channel that would provide the average NFL fan with tons of worthwhile information when this network was started, but Gumbel, alone, kept anyone from taking the venture too seriously. By dropping this 'boat anchor', they have a good chance to rehabilitate their image. I do not know a whole lot about his replacement, but his radio background should help.

I, personally, would like to see this network recreate my favorite NFL show, Inside the NFL with real hosts, not the spares that they populate much of the productions on this network with (excepting Collinsworth). If they did, I would watch it every week.

July 7, 2008 (FPRC) — Antmore Technologies, LLC’s Instant Call Blast website has created

July 7, 2008 (FPRC) -- Antmore Technologies, LLC's Instant Call Blast website has created several different types of call blasts that will suit the needs of its robocall and voice broadcasting clientele.

Introducing: Political Blast (SM), Emergency Blast SM, School Blast SM, Union Blast SM, Patient Blast SM, Religious Blast SM, Sports Blast SM, Ticket Blast SM, Wake up Blast SM.

Each Call Blast is designed to identify the needs of each industry carefully addressing the problems and solutions that each type of client requires. Antmore Technologies felt that one type of call blast for each customer was just too broad of a solution as certain clients had different requirements. Antmore Technologies founder Anthony Morelle had this to say about the new products release, "this will not only help streamline Instant Call Blast's operational capacity, but also make it easier for our customers to do business and use our services with ease."

Instant Call Blast started out working with politicians and political consultants. They have since expanded into many other industries that have jumped onto the bandwagon of prerecorded messages. Each customer has identified that they can reach all of their contacts in a matter of moments as opposed to hours. Church groups, ticket brokers, doctor's offices, hotels, and unions have found not only savings in time and money, but also a long term relationship with Instant Call Blast!

While there may be a Robocall Do Not Call Registry on the horizon that may stifle the industry, Morelle had this to say, "once people have realized that voice broadcasting is the answer to rising postage in the United States, the industry will see a rise in these types of calls." Morelle goes on to add that the registry is just another excuse for people to avoid going to the polls. "As a registered voter, I actually welcome these calls because it helps me become informed about issues, platforms, and candidates. Anyone that doesn't like these types of calls is either not a voter or un-American," Morelle later adds.

Morelle says that he will be rolling out Text Blast (SM) and Poll Blast (SM) and Pet Blast (SM) that will alert your neighborhood of a missing pet. "There are so many uses for this technology, it is just another extension to everyday life. You can call people for birthdays or event reminders."

Morelle set up a Myspace page specifically to draw support for another product called Band Blast (SM) that will alert band-goers of a venue change, event reminder, or concert tickets. "As I have said, there are too many uses that are recognized everyday that I won't be able to keep up!"

Morelle hopes to generate support for his new products with giveaways, discounts, and prizes. He recently installed a newsletter platform on his homepage to steer potential and existing customers towards further savings. "There isn't another company out there that can offer what we can!"

Instant Call Blast's website has been restructured to handle the traffic and are anticipating an increase in traffic by 500%. "We hope this will be a great quarter to an already amazing year!"

It challenges the idea that traditional TV and radio use is being displaced as Internet use increases, saying this assumption is false:

Specifically, over the last decade per capita hours of Internet use have increased to 10 hours per week while total weekly hours of usage of TV and radio, together, have remained stable.

The answer is clearly that for the average Canadian, broadcasting content found on the Internet is not a replacement or a substitute for traditional media. Internet usage is replacing some activities in Canadians’ lives – but not their usage of television and radio.

CBC argues that Canadians use the Internet primarily as a communications and research tool, rather than for leisure or entertainment activities.

It also has a go at amateur content online, arguing this will not replace traditional media. And it clearly sees the Internet as a merely a distribution channel, rather than as a new medium that has its own unique set of characteristics:

The Internet simply provides people with another tool to personalize their consumption of video and audio content: broadcasting content found on the Internet does not provide a replacement or substitute for traditional broadcast media, particularly entertainment programming.

It is understandable that the CBC would seek to defend and justify its existence. But it is making the wrong argument. It is assuming that one form of media will replace another, rather then understanding that many young people use multiple media concurrently.

It is also mistaken in seeing the net as "simply" a way for people to customise how they consume video and audio. This ignores the rise in amateur content online and how people are sharing this with each other.

The CBC's submission is clearly firmly rooted in its broadcast culture.

YouTube will be allowed to mask important user information from records it must turn over to Viacom,

YouTube will be allowed to mask important user information from records it must turn over to Viacom, Google said in a blog post Monday.

"Viacom and the other litigants have backed off their demand for YouTube user viewing histories," Google said in a statement. "We have reached agreement to anonymize the data."

A Viacom spokesman declined to comment.

The move comes after a federal court earlier this month ordered Google's YouTube to hand over usernames, IP addresses, and viewing histories to Viacom, parent company of Comedy Central and MTV. This ignited a controversy over Internet privacy and put Viacom on the defensive.

Last year, Viacom accused Google's YouTube of violating its copyright in a $1 billion lawsuit. Following the court's order, Viacom was widely criticized for intruding on people's online privacy even though the company had said it never asked to receive personally identifying information.

To this point, the agreement appears to make everyone a winner: Viacom will look like a responsible Internet citizen, Google will no doubt be credited for standing up for Internet rights and most importantly, and YouTube users don't have to worry about their privacy.

But this is certainly not the end of this case. Last weekend, two sources with knowledge of the negotiations between the companies told CNET News that Google was refusing to hand over to Viacom

[caption id="attachment_11" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Youtube"][/caption]

information about what videos YouTube employees have watched or uploaded to the site.

The sources said that the information could help Viacom prove that YouTube has turned a blind eye to the piracy on its site. Google is also likely to ask to see similar records about Viacom's employees. That might show that while Viacom's lawyers were demanding YouTube to remove it's videos, Viacom's marketing managers may have been among those that posted them.

The case is not scheduled to go to court until next year at the earliest.

Some of the more interesting legal wrangling left to go is Google's attempt to depose two high-profile Viacom employees: Stephen Colbert of The Colbert Report and Jon Stewart of The Daily Show.

Também já assinou remixes para Marc Romboy, Namito e Steve Bug (amigo de longa data de Landsky). A playlist do mix diz tudo, com os grandes nomes do minimal/techno (adoro mathias tanzmann) kkkkkk... ouçam!!!

It was the first time that I had ever been involved with a professional video shoot. Mike is amazing behind the camera. He filmed the entire thing with such ease and attention to detail. Gael Hanauer did a wonderful job as the on-air talent. Rick and Tim both said that it was one of the best reads on a PSA they had ever seen, and they’ve been doing this along time.

The Genius of Paul Rhymer

The following short essay (the last of three) about Paul Rhymer's classic radio program "Vic and Sade," was written to promote a talk I gave titled Writing Humorous Dialogue at the Institute for Language, Technology, and Publications Design, University of Baltimore, on April 20, 1995. The program featured local actors reading from Vic and Sade scripts. If you want to know more about the work of Paul Rhymer, or listen to one of the taped shows, click on the "Paul Rhymer" and "Vic and Sade" links in the sidebar. (For a start I recommend the show "A Letter From Aunt Bess.")

Paul Rhymer's knack for writing dialogue is nowhere more evident than when he has one of his characters deliver a telephone monologue. Sometimes it's Vic on the phone curtly dealing with a salesperson or a wrong number, or Rush gabbing with Bluetooth Johnson, Nicer Scott, or another of his buddies from school or the neighborhood. Most often, though, the telephone monologue falls to Sade, usually when she's home alone taking a break from her domestic duties. The monologue I've chosen as representative is from an undated script, most likely from the early 1940s, since Sade's amiable Uncle Fletcher is featured. Uncle Fletcher joined the show as an on-mike character around that time and here makes one of his slapstick entrances. When he enters, in the company of Rush, Sade's telephone monologue, or "solo," is transformed into a trio. Actually it's a quartet if you count "Ruthie," on the other end of the line.

ANNOUNCER: Well, sir, it's early afternoon as we enter the small house half-way up in the next block now, and here in the living room we find Mr. Victor Gook all by herself. Mrs. Gook is at the telephone conversing with her close friend and confidante Mrs. Frederick Stembottom. Listen:

SADE (to phone): I didn't take you away from anything, did I, lady? Well, ish, I haven't really got anything to say now that I've called you. (giggles) Yes . . . well, what happened I went like a house a-fire all morning long and done nine million jobs around the house and then got dinner and pitched in on my upstairs the minute the boys left for the office an' school, and finally did quit and wash and put on a clean apron and then discovered I'd been on the go so much I couldn't settle down. (laughs) You know how that is lady. Person gets theirself all keyed up and they hafta slow down gradual or the boiler explodes. (laughs) Yes . . . so I telephoned you. Hey, maybe that's not very complimentary. (loud lady laugh) No, but you appreciate how I mean, Ruthie. Sure. Yes, isn't it a quiet afternoon. One of them hushedy-hushedy afternoons where a person sits and listens to pins dropping. Little bit ago I was out on the back porch shaking my mop and 'way off in the distance somewhere I heard some fella say giddap to his horse and I bet twenty-five cents he was clear away over on Chestnut Street and that's eight hundred miles from here if it's an inch. Yeah . . . you run inta real still afternoons every so often. Like Sunday kinda. I was sayin' to . . . say, lady, hang on a second, I think I heard my kitchen door. (calls) Hello? Groceries? You, Irving?

RUSH (off): Hi, Mom.

FLETCHER (off): Afternoon, Sadie honey.

SADE (calls, in some surprise): Well—hello. (to phone) Uncle Fletcher and Rush just walked in, Ruthie. I can't imagine what Rush's doing home from school. (crash in the kitchen) Oh, my goodness. (calls) What happened?

FLETCHER (cheerfully, off) Fell down.

SADE (calls sharply) Who fell down?

RUSH (off, cheerfully): We both fell down.

SADE (not loud): Oh, for mercy's sake. (to phone) What, Ruthie? No, we don't need to hang up. There's no reason why we hafta cut our conversation short just because . . . huh?

RUSH (approaching): Uncle Fletcher tripped on his shoelace, Mom.

FLETCHER (approaching, cheerfully): No broken bones, Sadie, Honey, no broken bones.

SADE (to phone): Well whatever you say, lady. Seems like a shame though. I take you away from whatever you're doing and just because my family busts in we hafta cut short our . . . (giggles) . . . well, ish.

RUSH (coming up): Principal called a special teachers' meeting, Mom.

FLETCHER (coming up): Using the telephone, are you, Sadie?

SADE (to phone) No, you needn't bother to call back, Ruthie.

FLETCHER (gently): Mama's using the telephone, Rush. I'd stop my titters, whimpers, and guffaws.

RUSH (amused): O. K.

FLETCHER (sententiously) When the older folks is using the telephone it's always best to let up on the titters, whimpers and guffaws.

RUSH (chuckling): I'm letting up on 'em.

FLETCHER: You're a good boy.

SADE (to phone): Well, all righty, Ruthie, whatever you say. Dandy. Fine.

FLETCHER (to Rush, sententiously) There was a little boy in Detroit Michigan neglected to let up on his titters, whimpers and guffaws while Momma was using the telephone and he disappeared and all they ever found was one of his tiny patent leather booties, the tassel singed at the bottom.

RUSH (chuckles): I'll remember that.

FLETCHER (gently): Yes—it teaches us a lesson.

SADE (to phone): All righty then, Ruthie lady, we'll leave it like that. You bet. All righty, Ruthie. You betty, lady. Goodbye. (hangs up)

The Last Word
Even before Uncle Fletcher and Rush enter, Sade's monologue—through Rhymer's word choices and emphasis, including pauses, giggles and laughs—becomes a dialogue. It really is a solo, of course, but written so skillfully that we can almost hear her duet with Ruthie on the other end of the line. Rhymer, by his example—assuming we're interested enough to pay attention—is teaching up how to write humorous dialogue even when what he is presenting appears, at first, to be a monologue. As with the example above, all his lessons are subtle. If we want what he has to teach us we have to dig it out. After all, Rhymer's purpose in "Vic and Sade" is not to conduct a writing craft class, he simply want's to entertain us. But sometimes it does seem that he also intends to instruct us directly, as in the following excerpt from a 1939 script. As we join the Gook family in the little house halfway up in the next block this time, Sade is explaining to Vic that she has been asked by Mr. Gumpox, the garbage man, to circulate a petition in the neighborhood. Seems he's unhappy with his rate of pay and will consider staying on the job only if Sade can get six hundred signatures, which he assumes will influence the city to give him a raise. (Click on image above to read the caption.)

SADE: Let's see. I think I can remember most of that petition. "We, the undersigned, being in sane mind an' sound body, do hereby command, request, an' implore that Francis Gumpox be retained by the city. As homeowners with a passionate love for a beautiful town in which to live we feel that this community could never stand to lose the services of Francis Gumpox, who knows and loves garbage like no other man on earth."

VIC (laughs): Oh, for gosh sakes, does that guy . . .

SADE: Wait a second, I left out a word. "Who knows and loves garbage disposal like no other man on earth."

VIC (chuckles): Thunder.

SADE (giggles): The other word sounds funny . . . "knows an' loves garbage like no other man on earth."

VIC (chuckles): It all sounds funny.

END
