I, like many, am a huge Tarantino fan so I felt like he deserved the Sunday Movie spot today. I choose one of his less celebrated flicks, however, because it would be just too easy to choose Pulp Fiction. Jackie Brown is an excellent movie hands down. It was the resurgence of Pam Grier and Robert Forster's careers caught on camera. They were spot on in the film as were all the cast members. The cast includes names such as Bridget Fonda, Michael Keaton, Robert De Niro, Chris Tucker, and Samuel L. Jackson (it's a Tarantino flick you know he's in there). The soundtrack is great as well, Quentin has rounded up some of the greatest soul songs of all time and put them to good use in the movie. Overall you got a great director, a great cast, a great soundtrack, combine that with an great script and you got a great movie.

Oggi parliamo o meglio riparliamo di un altro interessante thriller di inizio anni 90, "Inserzione Pericolosa", non lasciatevi ingannare dal titolo banale e forse scontato, se avete sentito parlare di questo film e l'avete scartato per il titolo (cosa che accade spessissimo!) cercatelo o se lo trovate in onda guardatelo o registratelo, a mio modestissimo parere merita la visione ed eventualmente, una seconda chance. Il titolo in inglese è: "Single white female".

Allie Jones (Bridget Fonda) è una donna di successo con una bella casa a Manhattan, un buon lavoro e un matrimonio a portata di mano. Poi, quando scopre che il suo fidanzato (Steven Weber) va ancora a letto con l'ex moglie, il matrimonio va all'aria e Allie, a quel punto, decide di cercare una ragazza con cui dividere la casa. Risponde all'annuncio Hedra Carlson (Jennifer Jason Leigh), timida e mite, ma con qualche pericoloso trauma nel suo passato. C'è un po' di Hitchcock e un po' di Bergman (soprattutto "Persona") in questo film di Barbet Schroeder. Anche se poi il gioco dello scambio delle identità tra le due ragazze scivola verso la soluzione più facile ed effettistica.

Bridget Fonda vs. Jennifer Jason Leigh

Instead of going to prison, Nikita is "recruited" (so to speak) into a secret government agency of spies and assassins.  When she emerges three years later, she has been transformed from street harpy into a sort of female James Bond.  The agency sets her up in an apartment in the guise of a normal woman.  But then, something unexpected happens; instead of proceeding into one over-the-top gunfight after another, "La Femme Nikita" turns into something akin to a character study of a woman who slowly realizes that she has something to lose.

This movie is billed as a suspense film, and there are some top-notch action setpieces, most notably the famous battle in a restaurant kitchen that caps off her first assignment.  Oh, and Jean Reno's appearance as a rather less competent version of Harvey Keitel's cleaner character from "Pulp Fiction" is a hoot, too.  (I know, I know, "Pulp Fiction" came out later.  But I saw "Pulp Fiction" first.  So there.)  However, these scenes are not actually what the movie is interested in; the heart of the story is what happens between the assassinations and skullduggery and sneaking around.  The final scene is just remarkable, and not at all what I was expecting from my steady diet of American action flicks.

"La Femme Nikita" put my wife to sleep in a little over an hour.   Before she fell asleep she had actually started to pay attention to it, so we had to stop and finish it up later.  After it was over, she pronounced it good, which is high praise coming from her.  (The last film to earn the coveted "good" rating from her was "The Illusionist".)  Anyway, if you're in the mood for a little different take on the whole assassination game, this might be a good movie to check out.

When I posted (briefly) yesterday I had read no fewer than 30 pages. (30!) So, to you're extremely conservative (and rather insulting) estimate of 1 page I say "Plffffft!"

Here are my thoughts on the first few chapters:

Am I alone in finding a few creepy undercurrents in the opening chapters of this "children's" classic. Was I the only one who found it all a bit too convenient that Rat had in advance of ever meeting Mole all ready packed a lunch for two, and planned a day on the river? (A day on the river, no less, that he knew his "new" friend Mole would love!)

Curious, I say. Very curious.

And then there's Mole's willingness to abandon his old way of life, and presumably all of his former underground friends. (What a different story this would be if we were introduced to good ol' Earthworm and Ground Squirrel and that evil arch nemesis Fire Ant.) I feel like Mole is Jennifer Jason Leigh to Rat's Brigdet Fonda and we are embarking on what might all too soon become a woodland version of Single White Female.

Also, in Chapter Two was I alone in briefly thinking that Toad had died?

I know, I know on the surface it seems like a ridiculous thought but when I read:

"The end was indeed nearer than ever the Rat suspected. After so much open air and excitement the Toad slept soundly, and no amount of shaking could rouse him out of bed the next morning."

I thought poor Toad had had the amphibian equivalent to heart attack. (I've never been more happy to be wrong.)

That's an excellent question you had regarding gender. I had never thought about it. Now I will. Once my thoughts have been thunk, I will get back to you.

Well these thoughts are a bit all over the place. Perhaps one day I will actually write something sensical and coherent.

Alice in Chains fueron grandes. Ídolos de la llamada generación X junto con los Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Mudhoney y Nirvana, en el año 93 ya habían vendido más de 3 millones de copias sólo en los Estados Unidos (en total más de 12 millones). Layne Staley competía duramente con Kurt Cobain y Mark Lanegan por ser el más desarraigado y drogadicto de los músicos de Seattle.

La fama llegó con “Solteros” (Singles). Cameron Crowe dirigió con brillo a Matt Dillon y Bridget Fonda en una entretenida película que cuenta las andanzas de 6 vecinos veinteañeros que viven en Seattle, y cuya banda sonora son esos primeros Pearl Jam (Mother Love Bone), Screaming Trees y por supuesto Alice in Chains.

El directo de los Cantrell, Staley y compañía (empieza en el minuto 1:29), junto con el cameo de Chris Cornell hacen de esta película algo diferente y con cierto gusto de leyenda para una generación.

Poco después de “Solteros” y de “Dirt”, Layne Staley se enganchó seriamente a la heroína y entonces se jodió todo. “Jar of Flies” era un buen disco, el del perro en la portada te dejaba con ganas de mucho más, y el unplugged de la MTV era un directo sin energía.

Staley murió en 2002. Cantrell siguió con la banda, pero nunca volvieron a ser igual de grandes.

Meanwhile down in Hollywood, Smoking Gunn 2, the latest blockbuster from actor Nick Lang (J. Fox) is about to be released. Lang feels typecast as the dashing Joe Gunn, think part Indiana Jones, part ripe camembert. Pining for a role he can sink his teeth into, and longing to appear in a movie without “a god damn Roman numeral in the title”. He wants to be Ray Casanov, cop with attitude. Sadly the studio wants Mel Gibson, so Lang has two weeks to prepare for a screen test.

Lang has seen Moss on the news, just after he lost the Crasher for the fourth time in the films opening high speed pursuit. He decides Moss is the real life Casanov. The only way Lang can prepare for the role is to shadow Moss and get under his skin for two weeks to learn how to be a cop.

Now off the Party Crasher case, Moss is hacked off with the “bullshit” of having to babysit Lang, now known as Casanov. Moss’s Captain, played by Delroy Lindo, makes it clear he can either do it “the easy way, or the hard way”. You don’t have to be Derren Brown to know it will be the latter.

Will Moss do everything he can to lose Lang? Will Lang get to fire a real gun? Can Moss have a relationship with Susan without his stressful cop lifestyle and bad attitude getting in the way? Will they get the Crasher? And more importantly will they have a life affirming conversation which makes them realise they have more in common then they first thought?

Looking at The Hard Way now, it still holds up as an entertaining buddy movie. It is well written, with some great references, including a poke at Scientology. Its strongest asset remains the acting, Fox and Woods both turn out great performances. Fox got the chance to move away from his more family orientated films and TV work, whilst Woods gets to let off some steam in an exaggerated and clichéd performance of ‘movie cop’. Personally I’m not sure how this would have played out with another cast and thankfully I don’t have to.

There is also a great supporting cast including Luis Guzmán, and LL Cool J, in minor roles as Moss’s fellow detectives, Annabella Sciorra as Susan, and a young Christina Ricci as Susan’s daughter. Those eagle eyed viewers will also spot male model Fabio at the night club at the start of the film. He handled this role with panache so with talk of a planned Thor movie, surely Fabio will get the call?

Sadly the Hard Way would go on to be one of Badham’s last decent films after showing promise with such ‘young Nick’ friendly fare as Wargames, and Short Circuit. He followed this up with 1993’s pointless America remake of Luc Besson’s fantastic Nikita, Point of No Return (aka ‘The Assassin’ to British audiences, and ‘a waste of time, Gabriel Byrne, and Bridget Fonda to the rest of the cinema loving world’). Badham now directs for TV, and has recently worked on shows such as Heroes and The Shield.

Interestingly The Hard Way was the first 15 certificate film I saw at the cinema. I was 11 and clearly far too cool for school. Telling my friends about the achievement was far more satisfying (at the time) than the film itself. I’m not really sure what I was expecting about seeing a ‘15’, I mean the ticket buying procedure was the same, the snacks were still over priced, they didn’t change the carpets or anything. What you did get, before the film, was a massive round circle on the screen which said ‘suitable for people over the age of 15 only’. Obviously I did tell my friends that it was a completely different experience, and that they did change the carpets.
