I laughed. A lot. I miss being in college a lot right now. Screw this big kid shit.

Yesterday, my cousin/niece/first cousin once removed/little bundle of joy challenged me to a game of Connect 4. "Great," I thought, playing a little kids game with a little kid should be somewhat entertaining at the least. Her mom warned me she was good, but that's what they all say. Turns out she really was good. Not good enough to beat me, but good nonetheless.

The game, when played correctly, can become quite intense and frustrating, involving a great deal of strategy.

After beating my first victim, my other cousin wanted in on the action. A group of onlookers surrounded us. And before you knew it, we were having a good 'ol family tournament. Long story short, we played this game for a good portion of the night. It is quite addicting -- so much that my dad decided he would go out and buy one. My new obsession.

So imagine my surprise to find my first reaction to walking into Bradley's school this afternoon to see him sobbing uncontrollably and having his teacher tell me that one of his friends had pulled down Bradley's pants and repeatedly kicked him in the balls was to want to rip that little five year od fucker's face off. And, having done that, kick his teacher's ass for not watching the kids more closely.

I mean, what the fuck? What kind of fucked up kid does something like that? Not normal. Not even in the vicinity of normal. And (here comes the hippie/bleeding heart liberal) there has to be something going on at home. The director of the school is apparently going to have a conference with the kid's parents, and I hope that helps. Sometimes parents can be oblivious. I know that from first hand knowledge, from the front and back of the issue.  But jesus.

And also? How much does it suck to be a parent and have something this happen to your kid, with no way of preventing it? Makes me realize how much my parents went through with me. The guilt is a heavy weight. 

We came home and cuddled on my bed and he is just the sweetest boy in the world. Hugs and kisses and telling me how much he loves me and is glad he has me. And I wish I had words to tell him how much he means to me. How I wish I could prevent every tiny little hurt he will encounter in his lifetime. How I will do my absolute damnedest to try. And how I will always be there to help soothe away the ones I can't prevent.

And how, if need be, I will always have his back if he needs to regulate on any mofos who try to start shit with him. Don't mess with us, bitch.

Caramelized Onion Chianti Sauce:
2 sweet yellow onions small diced
2 tbl granulated sugar
3 tbl Chianti wine vinegar
1 cup Chianti Wine
4 sprigs fresh thyme
½ gallon beef stock

Seared Beef and Grilled Asparagus:
2 - 4oz beef tenderloin medallions
4 each medium asparagus cut 5 inches long & peeled
1 French baguette
1 oz onion Chianti sauce
2 tbl Stilton cheese mixture

Stilton Cheese Mixture:
½ lb Stilton Cheese Crumbled
2 tbl roasted garlic
2 tbl chopped herbs (rosemary, thyme, oregano)
Pinch of salt & black Pepper

Caramelized Onion Chianti Sauce

Caramelize onions with sugar & butter, oil over medium heat until onions are very brown. Deglaze using the vinegar & simmer until almost dry. Add wine and reduce by half. Add beef stock and reduce by half season with salt & black pepper

Seared Beef Tenderloin and Grilled Asparagus:
1 Season Beef with Kosher Salt & fresh ground black pepper
2 Sear beef in hot pan to desired doneness
3 Season asparagus with salt, pepper & extra virgin olive oil & grill over low heat
4 Cut 2 crostinis about ½ inch thick & 2 inches long
5 Spread Stilton mixture generously on to crostinis & toast in broiler until brown
6 Place crostinis in middle of plate with asparagus
7 Shingle beef on top of asparagus
8 Spoon sauce around on beef and on plate

Then I settled back into the big overstuffed chair to see several fleas jump on me and one on Lucas' head.  Yep, I was done.  Fleas.

Luckily, a storm was coming and I was able to excuse myself to get home before the storm hit. 

Lucas cried the next 2-3 hours straight, which is unlike him.  I gave him a bath.  He settled down.

This is some pretty poor shooting. I'm not sure what their issue was, but they seemed slow to engage and their accuracy was pretty poor. Understand, though, that the targets are much further away than they appear.

I've already changed his sheets once tonight, and now he won't sleep!  Hope he stops vomitting soon.

La Federación de Vela de la Región de Murcia celebra el próximo viernes 18 de julio su Gala de la Vela, que se desarrollará en el centro de celebraciones y eventos ‘El Lago de La Torre’, de Polaris World, ubicado en La Torre Golf Resort a partir de las 20:30 horas, un entorno perfecto que combina la profesional atención que un evento de estas características requiere con la cercanía a la naturaleza, el entorno natural de nuestro deporte.

La Gala de la Vela es un evento social asentado en la Región y muy importante para la Federación, pues valora y premia el esfuerzo de nuestros federados en los últimos meses. Éste es un año olímpico con lo que ha requerido el sprint final de nuestros regatistas preolímpicos y la Federación ha querido reconocer su trabajo.

En el mismo acto, se entregarán los trofeos pertenecientes a la I Regata Costa Cálida - II Copa Presidente de la Comunidad, disputada en nuestra Región recientemente.

El acto será presidido por el Excmo. Sr. Presidente de la Comunidad Autónoma de Murcia, D. Ramón Luis Valcárcel, y asistirán consejeros regionales, alcaldes y autoridades locales de las poblaciones costeras de nuestra Región.

Además, se van a premiar otras clases no olímpicas con podiums en europeos y mundiales, hazañas atlánticas en solitario y la colaboración de entes públicos en la organización del evento Los Alcázares 2007 A toda vela que congregó a miles de regatistas, técnicos y familiares de todo el mundo en el municipio marmenorense.

De nuevo este GP se ha visto marcado por la lluvia, que a su antojo ha decidido que la carrera de 125 cc se disputara en condiciones secas y la de 250 cc en mojado. Para los pilotos del octavo de litro las 27 vueltas han sido pura incertidumbre. Finalmente, aunque en las últimas vueltas estaba lloviendo la dirección decidía no suspenderla, llegando hasta el final con neumáticos slicks.

Bradley Smith representante del Team Polaris World, se colocaba en puestos de cabeza desde el inicio llegando a liderar la prueba. Hasta la última curva Smith intentaba recuperar las posiciones pérdidas en una dura batalla por terminar en puestos de podio, aunque finalmente el joven ingles, cruzaba la línea de meta en una cuarta posición que lo coloca séptimo en la clasificación general con 79 puntos y a 87 del primer clasificado.

En la categoría de 250cc Mattia Pasini realizaba una fantástica salida que lo remontaba hasta la quinta posición. Pasini que ha vuelto a encontrar el ritmo con su moto se mantenía en el primer grupo hasta finalizar sexto. Para el italiano que no había tenido un buen fin de semana este resultado es esperanzador y le proporciona la fuerza necesaria para volver a ocupar los puestos de podio. Mattia pasa a ocupar la sexta posición en la clasificación general con 108 puntos y a 56 puntos del primero.

# 38 Bradley Smith - 4º - “ Al principio estaba esperando para ver que sucedía, no estaba seguro de las condiciones de la pista y he preferido ir con prudencia. Mis neumáticos al inicio no han respondido bien por lo que he esperado a que alcanzaran la temperatura idónea. He visto que podía ponerme primero y así ha sido, entonces a comenzado a llover y me he puesto un poco nervioso, el grupo que me perseguía me ha pasado y aunque tenía un buen ritmo y he intentado hasta la última curva pasar para conseguir podio, no ha podido ser. Estoy contento con la cuarta posición, hubiera sido genial conseguir una victoria antes de las vacaciones pero así esta también muy bien”.

# 75 Mattia Pasini - 6º - “ Estoy contento, aunque comenzaba muy retrasado, décimo tercero, he realizado una buena salida. La lluvia y la pista mojada han complicado todo mucho, he sido muy prudente por que no quería echar a perder la carrera. He comenzado a llevar mi ritmo y me he sentido muy bien con el comportamiento de la moto. En un momento me he quedado bloqueado en el segundo grupo pero después de conseguir superarlo he conseguido rodar en el grupo de cabeza hasta el final. La lluvia en las últimas vueltas me ha impedido la visibilidad era imposible ver con el agua que salpicaba el piloto que me precedía además la cúpula de la moto se me ha empañado y no veía nada. No ha sido un fin de semana fácil y la lluvia sigue impidiendo el trabajo y desarrollo de la moto que para nosotros es de vital importancia. La temporada empezaba muy bien quizás por que los circuitos eran los que habíamos usado para los test, ahora sin embargo llego sin referencias a trazados desconocidos para mi con la nueva cilindrada y esto nos hace comenzar un paso atrás que el resto. Ahora lo importante es encontrar el setting y puesta a punto de la moto, este resultado es importante nos devuelve la moral a todos y nos hacia falta!!”.

Our tale starts on Table VII, which is the dress rehearsal. You first fire a couple of rounds to confirm your zero- that is, making sure the sights of the gun actually point to where the rounds will go. Then you drive from station to station, engaging targets. Some are engaged from a stationary position, and some on the move. After you've done this, you go back and do it all again. At night.

On this particular night, A-11 had the duty as “the spotter”. When crews would zero their main gun, we would help them spot the shot to tell how well their sights were aligned. The target was a large square board on a pop up target. Normally, when you hit a pop-up, down it goes. They have a mechanical lifter to raise it for your next shot.

I'd been spotting shots all night, from just after sundown until almost 3am. Finally, it was our turn to go. After a mechanical problem with the zero target was solved-which led to “The Great Hot Mic Frab-up”(but that's a story for another time), the range was hot, and we were cleared to zero. One small problem. While we had been fooling around waiting for the folks in the tower to raise the zero target, an elk had decided this was a fine time to graze. Right next to the zero target.

Now, one of the things you hear at every single range safety briefing is this, “Don't shoot the wildlife!” In fact, post policy called for a cease fire. Shooting the wildlife is a major no-no. It was a good way to lose stripes and a goodly portion of your pay. So, I called in to the tower and told them that a large herbivorous mammal was standing next to the target. There was some hemming and hawing and cogitating going on up there. We were running out of nighttime. We had to finish up pronto, shoot at night, and clear the range so the next company could come in and start their runs. Eventually, the call came from the tower, “Pop a round down there to scare him off.” I looked at LT K. LT K looked at me... What were they smoking up there? After a brief conversation with the controllers in the tower to confirm they were in fact in possession of their faculties, LT K and I decided to proceed. We had just zeroed the gun that morning, and I was pretty certain the sights hadn't drifted at all. This particular track held its zero very well. The decision was made to just put one round through the zero target to confirm, and since that was right by the elk, maybe it would scare him away.

Select Single Shot AP. Manual Safety Off. Electrical Safety Off. Ghost round cycled. Sights on target. LT K gives his fire command. I respond with, “On the way” and squeeze the triggers. CRACK.

Down goes the zero target.

And down goes the second elk standing right behind it. The one nobody saw.
