My year abroad has now brought me to Barcelona. An unexpected occurence as I previously vowed I´d never live in the ´chilly´ Catalan speaking second capital of Spain during my year abroad - I wouldn´t learn any Spanish and I wouldn´t get a sun tan - a lose lose situation. After passing the telephone interview for an interesting internship (in which I said it would be no problem relocating the day after my language assistant contract finished in Bordeaux) I found myself jamming all my belongings (which easily overflowed from my one small suitcase and rucksack) into many a large plastic bag in preparation for the 11 hour train journey from Bordeaux to Barcelona. Perhaps one of the upsides of not thinking through my life was that at least I could bring everything I wanted with me - afterall I was going by train - the only limit was my bicep strength (unrivalled) and the number of people I could encourage to help me along the 3-train-changes way - the airline company and their 20kg would not have let me get half as far. At 11pm the day before I was due to leave Bordeaux Catherine came up to my ´bedroom´ to say her goodbye. There was little left to say between myself and my French host family by this point - having spent the previous 2 weeks with little conversation due to them being offended that I didn´t think it was particularly normal to pay 400 euros (a month´s rent) for my final two weeks. Catherine however did make it up the wobbly attic stairs of death to tell me that I didn´t look like I was by any means packed and that her husband, Jean would help me the following morning. His help the following morning turned out to be driving me 200m down the road, taking out my many bags from the car, putting them on the pavement and leaving me in the pouring rain wondering how I would heave them to the tram stop and wishing I´d walked to the tram stop next to our house instead of being driven further away from both that one and the following. Still this was more generous than I could ever have hoped - Jean originally was going to drive me the 5 minutes to the train station - which I politely was decling just as Catherine cut Jean off and loudly told him (in front of her lunch party of Jean´s extended family) that that absolutely wouldn´t be necessary - nor would it be necessary to take me to the tram stop - afterall my suitcase had wheels.

Margaux, Bordeaux, France. 12.5%

I'm unfamiliar with this chateau. I bought a case of the 2004 based on critics reviews, Parker especially has been complementary in recent years. Otherwise I know nothing about it.

This was unexpected, however, given my knowledge of 2001 which is a good vintage, well priced, suffering if anything from a degree of mudiness, i.e. the fruit isn't super pure it doesn't sing, but the quality producers show none of this producing good wines in a reasonably priced vintage. Why was it unexpected, because of the whack of oak, almost coconut. It's an elegant wine, good acidity, but that oak it really does border on excessive.

Hmm, it's very clean modern, not extracted, but I'd prefer the oak was less obvious. Mint toffee wine. Don't touch it until 2010 see what if it is more integrated then.

There are so many things that I have wanted to write about in the past few weeks, but intense studying and life-living have made it practically impossible to update my own little cyber space.

- How can a person so outwardly keen on being a loyal boyfriend suck so much at it, and in public too? And how can so many people maintain the wrong idea about this person, when there are so many clues as to his real nature? Sometimes, people'swilling blindness amazes and astounds me. It really is quite incredible, the way the human mind works.

- Why is it that when you know you have little time left somewhere, you immediately start living life to its fullest, enjoying very moment, making the most ofevery encounter? And why is it that the encounters which have the most potential for beauty are the ones you make last, at the very last possible minute?

- How can people be so different? How can there be such vile and senseless beings on the one side, and on the other such radiant and admirable people? How is the evil in the world not balanced by the greater goodness? (I don't actually believe in good vs. evil and the greater goodness, but some people whom I've met in the past 2 months have shown me why human beings have a tendency to believe in it.)

- My time in Bordeaux searching for an apartment was rendered really fun by new people whom I am very happy to know, will be a part of my life from now on.

- Why is it that guys you don't give yourself to seem to want you forever? Even years later? I'v had a repetition of cases like this, and it gets frustrating that they can't just get over it and be friends. Kiss and make up? No, they want kiss and make out....

You bet.

Twenty years ago, when Long Island wines were considered boutique at best and over-priced fruit jui

Twenty years ago, when Long Island wines were considered boutique at best and over-priced fruit juice with a buzz at worst, local growers organized an event which gave the area instant cred.

Called "Maritime Climate Wine Growing: Bringing Bordeaux to Long Island," in 1988 some of the noble and ancient Bordeaux chateau came to compare the North Fork to their part of France.

Under the leadership of The Stony Brook University Center for Wine, Food and Culture a 20th anniversary celebration August 6-7 called "The Art of Balance: Cool Climate/Maritime Wines in a Global Context" will bring together some of the East End's most innovative restaurants and food providers with wineries from every European wine region, the Finger Lakes, Long Island and California.

Tastings, pairings, visits to vineyards and with chefs and sommeliers will be part of the program, with base camp being the Southampton campus of Stony Brook University. A blow-out tasting August 5 will kick off the affair.

On-campus housing is available for the two days.

From a press release:

To stage this 20th anniversary symposium, owners and managers from Long Island’s own 40 wineries are joining forces with some of the world’s leading wine-growers to lead two days of educational talks and wine tastings. This symposium will highlight the renewed appreciation of balanced, elegant, lower alcohol wines and afford an opportunity to talk and taste with some of the world’s leading cool/maritime climate wine producers. Both exciting and timely, the symposium program coupled with the relaxed atmosphere of summertime on Long Island’s East End will afford a wonderful experience to all those who participate.

90 points

Pauillac, Bordeaux, France. 13%

This has been highly rated by many wine critics (Jancis Robinson gave it as high as 18/20 "big and bloody and pretty sumptuous") which I can understand. It's hard to find anything but glowing reviews for Pontet-Canet in recent vintages. However I'm not greatly enamoured by the style of this bottle, it seems to be going down a Leoville Las Cas road which to me sacrifices some charm and a little complexity for deep ripeness.

The tannin is lovely, and there is a green seem, but dense ripeness that reminds me of vintages like 1982, 1989 and 1990 - which is pretty impressive for a 2001. The alcohol on the finish is a little too noticeable.

Zondag 7 juli 2008

We verkennen steden.

Slechts enkelen hadden hun eigen fiets.

[caption id="attachment_203" align="alignleft" width="202" caption="Who can resist this sweet face?"][/caption]

On Thursday we received preliminary results back on Bonnie's biopsies and the prognosis does not sound good. She appears to have a type of fungal infection that is extremely rare and usually fatal in dogs. We are waiting to discuss with the top expert in the field in this type of disease to see if there are treatments that can be done and how hard they will be on her. We very much want to give this sweet girl a chance and are continuing to pray for good news.

In the meantime, she is managing to consume around eight jars of meat-flavored baby food a day (her favorite seems to be chicken!) and she really enjoys eating, car rides and going for walks. She is a very patient and loving girl who just wants to be around people and do normal dog-things. Her digestive system finally seems to be straightening out a bit (she's keeping most of the food down and seems to be processing it well.) We're hoping she's putting on a little weight, although it's slow progress as we don't want to feed her too much at one time for fear she will get sick. When we rescued her she was around 33 pounds. (The average Dogue de Bordeaux seems to be at least double that size...we recently saw a male that was 120 lbs!) We'll try to weigh her soon and report on her progress.

Thank you to everyone who's supported and cared for this girl! If you'd like to make a contribution toward her continuing medical care (and upcoming treatments to fight her infection), please click on the Donate to APA! link or send an email to: donateATaustinpetsaliveDOTorg.

Alcohol: About 14.0% ABV.

Alcohol: About 14.0% ABV.

Production: A Bordeaux-style blend of fruit from old vines of Carmenère, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon from the Colchagua appellation of Chile's Rapel Valley. Blended with Merlot and Carmenère from vineyards that were planted as recently as 5 years ago.

Appearance: Beautiful in the glass and clean looking (though it is unfined and unfiltered). A silky, irridescent dark crimson. 5/5

Aroma: Cherry and chocolate nose with smoky oak vanillin and a light hint of anise and sweetened tobacco. Interesting and attractive. 18/20

Flavor/Body: Coats with mouth with a thick fruit smear of blackberry, plum and butter. Tannins that are almost creamy. Complex black fruit flavors with a slight suggestion of tobacco and tar. 37/40

Finish: Long, complex dark fruit finish with dark chocolate and a light kiss of spice and black tea. This is a heavy wine (14% ABV), though one experiences little in the way of alcohol heat. 9/10

Overall: 23/25. An excellent wine that is quite obviously well made. My chief complaint, if I dare complain about anything, is that it has a richness and a kind of buttery heaviness that makes this wine very filling and heavy in the stomach. It is "over-voluptuous." This wine would benefit, to my taste, if it featured a slightly brighter flavor of fresh red berry fruit.

My score: 92. 4¾ stars. Excellent.

Recommendation: An excellent wine that I enjoyed on its own with no food accompaniment. For the wine lover, this wine would make a great gift. Attractively labeled and bottled, this wine looks like it costs twice as much as you'll pay for it. There's quality in every aspect of its production. There's so much quality evident that--not knowing any better--you'd think that Chile is the wine capital of the world. And maybe it is... at least in the world of affordable wines of extraordinary quality.

Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux, France. 13%

Light gold colour. Aromas of Semillon, nice honey and lanolin.

A subtle wine, doesn't hit you with much, not superconcentrated, slightly ethereal. But what a lovely dry honey finish. Charming, and rather good. But expensive.
