I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. Lots of fun and wit as well as action!

Our new enemy has been introduced. Arachne, the spider witch (you named it). Her soul has been in the golem for the past 800years and now she has come back out in witch form, thanks to her spiderlings. She's back to do some badass things. WIth her followers, our heroes are definitely gonna have a hard time!

With more exposure to Justin, I've come to like his character. Though quite arrogant and disrespectful, through his loudspeaker headphones, he totally breaks the normal 'priest' stereotype. He prays, says the goods words but the headphones define his character alot. I love those Shinigami headphones!! I shall get them someday! Anyway, Justin isn't a normal deathscythe. He's fighting using himself. So?!? This probably means Justin is so much stronger if used as a weapon.

In the future, I see Soul Eater aspiring to Justin. After seeing Justin fight using himselve, Soul would want to learn his ways, so he doesn't just have to sit down with Maka every time she's out of battle.

And oh dear, Stein still going LOONY!

A while back, I began to make my own necklaces because I fell in love with those lovely chunky ones I kept seeing but couldn't afford to buy. Whenever I saw an interesting necklace on TV, (Bones wears some great ones by the way) I would think of how I could make something similar.

It got so that people I knew were asking me where I bought mine. When I told them that I made my own, they began to ask if I d sell some. I hadn't thought of that, but soon I was making and selling a few necklaces. I didn't make any money at it but I did enjoy having something to do with my hands when I wasn't writing.

Dear Hubby has no manual dexterity left due to his MS. However, he did help me invent a combination ID tag holder/necklace. At my last writers conference I ran out of them the first day. Now if only my books sell as well....

Recently an extraordinary friend sent me two hefty boxes full of beads of all types and sizes along with some tools I didn't have. What a marvelous treasure they are. I know she reads this, so here's another thank you, Elena. An additional thank you goes to another wonderful friend. She owns the shop on my blogroll, and she has permitted me to put some of my necklaces and earrings in her store.

It took me until Saturday night, but I managed to catch up on all my tv viewing before the week ende

It took me until Saturday night, but I managed to catch up on all my tv viewing before the week ended. To celebrate this accomplishment, I've decided to rank the shows I watched (the individual episodes, not the show overall) in order from best to worst, followed by my assessment of the episodes.

1. The Office - Best show of the week. This was another great episode of my second favorite comedy (only 30 Rock can beat it), and I was glad to welcome back the half hour time frame. Best moments: Jim recording Dwight's personal time with a stop watch, Jim taunting Dwight with a horribly ill-informed discussion of Battlestar Galactica with Andy, Dwight looking knowingly at the camera when Jim concluded that Dwight does take personal time during office hours (as the audience and Phyllis know too well, Dwight steals company time with Angela in the supply room). I also enjoyed the staff's confessions of ethically questionable workday activities, and Michael's continued awkward flirtation with Holly. Could anything have been more uncomfortable than when he was trying to talk to her about chastity belts during their lobster lunch? She handles his social faux pas better than anyone else.

2. Life on Mars - I was pleasantly surprised by this new show. The music, the acting, the cultural markers, the story. All of it was very well done. I'm not sure how long this show can continue its "trapped in a time warp/trapped in my head" motif, but for now I am happy to go along for the ride. I am also unfamiliar with the British version from two years ago. A brief summary: Detective Sam Tyler is on his way to rescue his girlfriend from a serial killer when he gets hit by a car. When he wakes up, he is in the same neighborhood, but it is 35 years earlier, in 1973. His clothes, his car, and his surroundings are all 70s style. He doesn't know if he has time traveled or if this is all in his head, but he decides to play along and solve crimes as long as he is there. It was refreshing to see this new, "old" spin on a crime show. The show runners have done an excellent job invoking the 70s through music, hair, clothing, furniture, etc. Perhaps the most telling aspect of the time difference is the treatment of women. Annie Norris, of the female police squad, is ostracized and not taken seriously by the rest of the police force, despite having a psychology degree and a keen sense of observation. I am interested to see how the show will evolve, or if it will even be given the chance to finish out its season. Based on what I've seen, I hope so!

3. CSI - This episode played out as a "requiem for Warrick," as well as a hunt for his killer. I would have preferred for it to take longer than one episode for the team to discover that the undersheriff was the guilty higher up mole in the department who murdered Warrick to protect himself, but instead they solved the case and tracked him down in a tidy 45 minutes. Stretching the investigation and/or manhunt out over two or three episodes would have given Warrick's sudden death more impact. As it is now, I feel like "what was the point" since the case was solved so quickly. Perhaps, though, it would have been too painful to watch his teammates mourn his loss and search for justice for more than one episode. Warrick was always one of my favorite characters, and I must admit I teared up (along with Nick, my other favorite) a bit as Grissom eulogized him at the funeral. In this episode we learned that Grissom was like the father that Warrick never had, and that Warrick was fighting for custody of his son, so his son could have someone to look up to the way he looked up to Grissom. It was all strangely touching for a show that's normally about guns, guts, and guilt. I'd imagine we'll continue to feel the ramifications of Warrick's death in the coming weeks, but we'll also see the team move forward without him. I wonder how Lawrence Fishburne will be introduced onto the show. Maybe Grissom will turn his back on this dark and difficult job and join Sarah in a happier, less stressful life. I'll be watching to find out.

4. Bones - While I was still entertained, this was my least favorite Bones episode of the season so far. The lab tech of the week was not very interesting (there are already plenty of characters with an overabundance of trivial knowledge on tv, most notably Grissom on CSI). As for the case of the week, I didn't even recognize the "prodigal son/turned suspect/turned following in his father's he-she footsteps" until I read it somewhere else. That was David Gallagher, little Simon Camden from that "thank goodness it's not on anymore" show, 7th Heaven. He was convincing here as the minister to misfits who became part of the investigation into his father's death. The he/she gender reassignment angle of the episode made for an intriguing mystery as Brennan and Booth put the pieces together. All that to say, there wasn't anything wrong with this episode - it just wasn't as outstanding as some of this season has been. I will miss this show very much until it returns later in November. It is my Wednesday night escape!

5. How I Met Your Mother - The "New York is so much better than New Jersey" bit has been done so much on tv that I rolled my eyes when it became clear that was where this episode was going, with the gang throwing a fit about having to go to New Jersey to hang out with Ted's fiancee Stella. However, the writers did the running joke justice in this case. Marshall's rant about how he's a giant man in a city full of small spaces, and how New Jersey is full of mega stores and cup holders and dog t-shirts, was pretty classic. And despite being a suburb dweller myself, I can appreciate the humor in a New Yorker's distaste for manicured lawns and discount store membership cards. However, it was nice that the episode ended with Ted reading a story to Stella's daughter in the comfort of her suburban home. There are different benefits for different people to living in the city vs. the suburb. The subplots of Barney begging for a fist bump and Robin quitting her job/riding a bike to get it back/quitting for real were entertaining as well. So overall, this was one of the better episodes of this show lately.

6. Heroes - I'm still not seeing much that makes me want to continue tuning in. The best part of the episode came at the very end when Hiro and Ando freed Adam (David Anders) from the coffin where he had been trapped since the end of last season. How refreshing it was to see David Anders' beautiful face - not even tainted by his underground captivity - after an episode full of ludicrous developments. Too bad his appearance only lasted a few seconds. Sadly, these few seconds will have me returning next week to see him again.

7. Kath and Kim - It wasn't like I was awaiting the premiere of this show with fevered anticipation or great expectations, but what an utter disappointment! One word I could use to sum it up: AWKWARD. And not in the good Office way. Molly Shannon and Selma Blair are well cast in their roles as Kath and Kim, so that's not the problem. The problem is that there are no likable characters on this show, save for perhaps Kim's on again, off again husband. Kath and Kim are a materialistic, celebrity gossip-obsessed, self-centered mother and daughter. What's to love there? Kath's boyfriend, played by mockumentary favorite John Michael Higgins, is funny at times, but mostly - here's that word again - awkward. I don't find humor in Kim giving up on her marriage so flippantly, over having to microwave dinner instead of eating out. I'm not expecting a comedy to be a social commentary, but with the disintegration of marriage in American society, it's not humorous to have Kim's broken relationship be a running gag. The scenes at the mall were a nice change of pace from a studio lot set, but mall scenes have been done better by a much better comedy: Arrested Development. I don't think there's enough story here to keep this mother/daughter duo afloat for very long. Perhaps this type of humor played better for an Australian audience (the current version is a remake of one from that country that lasted for four seasons). Some may find similarities between the type of humor found in Kath and Kim, and that of The Office. The difference: the audience cares about most of the characters on The Office. We want Jim and Pam to get engaged. We want Phyllis to feel good about herself. We want Michael to finally fulfill his dream of being a father. I just don't care about Kath, Kim, and their men. I don't plan to watch this one again.
Next week, I look forward to the return of Fringe. So far it is my favorite new show this fall.

Dear Hubby has secondary progressive MS so we have regularly scheduled appointments with h

Dear Hubby has secondary progressive MS so we have regularly scheduled appointments with his neurologist, pain management, physical therapy, and our family doctor. Then we have his elderly mother's many appointments we have to schedule around his. This coming week we have three appointments.

His mother has one on Thursday because her doctor changed it. We normally have a rule about appointments; they are never scheduled on a Thursday if we can help it. Thursdays are when I have my twice a month critiquing group meeting. On the alternate Thursdays, I go grocery shopping and to the farmer's market. Other times I shop at the pet store for the dogs and Koi, and I drop in to visit a few friends if I have time. In other words, it's my day.

I didn't go to my critiquing group this week even though it was scheduled. I didn't mind not going I had a good reason to stay home. DH took a nasty tumble into the arm of the couch a few days before and managed to break a rib. (His MS causes him to fall a lot since he has very little feeling in his feet and a lack of muscle memory. Usually he manages to fall without even a little bruise because he's learned to fall.) He was not thrilled to have me stay home and hover, he wants me to have some ‘me' time. He knows I need it, but I know that there are periods where he needs me more.

Until early this summer, we hadn't realized how much he depends on me. Then I fell and sprained, not one ankle, but both of them. Yes, BOTH of them and our two Bull Terriers were not involved in the incident. (Anyone who owns Bull Terriers would think they were but that's another post.) The dogs are innocent of this mishap. However, I do think I need to speak to a contractor about fixing the uneven sidewalk in the back yard.

I was supposed to stay off my feet, oh yeah that works. Crutches are fine if you have only one ankle sprained, they don't work for two ankles. You have to come down on one or both feet with each swing. Hobbling around with a cane worked best for me and gave DH many a laugh.

DH is a jewel among men. He did his best but he hasn't the strength or energy to take care of the dogs, the gardens, the pond, or cook meals. We ate a lot of take-out/delivered food for a few weeks. If I ever see another bucket O' chicken, I may sprout wings and cluck, and it was a few months until I wanted pizza or Chinese food again. The dogs took advantage because they knew I couldn't chase them down. The weeds got ahead of me and the pond filters needed a cleaning, but I didn't care because he tried his best and that's all anyone could ask of the love of their life.

[gallery size="full" columns="1"]

This episode revealed more details about Raigyo's and Haru's past. We see an interesting contrast between Haru and Nakiami. Nakiami changes her hair in preparation for a photo session and looks more feminine as a result, but this it just a cosmetic temporary adjustment. Haru on the ohter hand, goes through a much more difficult internal struggle with her past.

She thinks of Akiyuki and can't focus on her present. While visiting her home and recalling her mothers death, she says to her sister that she is in the army to protect her family. In a poignant scene, Haru cuts her hair, severing her ties to the past and taking a new path.

I know her through PETA, she's like the only celebrity that I actually know beyond just running into or something. I don't live a glamorous life in Hollywood. But then I digress, I already have a blog entry where I complain and whine about that topic.

Anyways I wanted to make a point this morning before my day gets busy to wish Emily Dechanel (Bones) a happy 32nd birthday.

She's a real inspiration, a wonderful person, and just one of the happiest people to be around that I've ever known.

So Emily I hope you have a wonderful birthday. Have your cake and eat it too babe, that's what I say!! ha ha lol

And have a piece for me because I'm a diet so I can't have any. :(

If you study classical ballet, you are well aware that the outward rotation of the hips (or turnout) is essential to the training and traditions of this form. Even if you are not a trained in ballet, as a dancer you probably use turnout at least some of the time. Concert or theatrical dance forms (like modern or jazz dance) in particular utilize turnout within their movement vocabulary. Ask most dancers, and you'll discover that turnout is high on their list of things to improve and increase. But how important is turnout, really? And is having extreme turnout really ideal?

The human body is designed primarily for forward motion. We walk, run, sit, and stand in the sagittal plane. In dance, the use of turned out legs is primarily utilized for ease of motion on the proscenium stage, a venue in which the performers present movement to an audience which sits entirely on one side of the stage (as opposed to all around or on three sides). When dance (ballet) moved to this forum from the royal courts, dancers spent more time moving side to side, necessitating a degree of turnout. Since then, this rotation of the legs has been exaggerated, accepted as the ideal, and adopted as the aesthetic in ballet.

With developments in dance medicine, most dance educators would now agree that 180-degree turnout is not truly a necessity in ballet or otherwise (although this has yet to really change ballet tradition). Sideways locomotion certainly does not require rotation to such a degree. Turnout does allow the greater trochanter to avoid the ilium as the leg is lifted above the waist, however 180 degrees of turnout is not required for this clearance. In fact, some research (discussed here) suggests that "most dancers have a maximum rotation of 55 degrees in their hips." This means that many who appear to have 180º turnout are probably making up the difference in the lower leg. I suspect that dancers who have danced for years without injury probably discovered early that it is not how much turnout you have that is important, it is how you use what you have. Therefore, it is imperative that one have an understanding of how the hip functions, what is improvable and what is not, how to increase turnout safely and without injury, and how to make the most of what one has.

What Is Turnout?

The Hip Joint

In anatomical terms, turnout is the outward (sometimes called lateral, or external) rotation of the hip joint.

The hip joint is the joining of the head/top of the femur (thigh bone) to the acetabulum, or hip socket

(seen in the diagram below).

Pelvis

This joint is a ball and socket joint, which allows for a wide range of motion on all three planes (sagittal, lateral, and transverse). The hip joint can produce flexion (forward of the body), extension (as in standing, not the unfortunately labeled lifting of the leg which is actually flexion in anatomical terms), abduction (away from the midline of the body), adduction (toward the midine of the body), inward rotation (turning-in), and outward rotation (turning-out). Most dance movements are a combination of these actions.

Muscles of lateral (outward) rotation

The hip joint is very complex and most of the muscles surrounding the socket are responsible for more than one action of the hip joint. These muscles both initiate and restrict movements of the hip. The outward rotators are pictured in the diagram on the right. The muscles that pass posterior (behind) the hip joint contract to initiate turnout while the anterior muscles lengthen, and those anterior (in front of) the joint contract to initiate inward rotation while the posterior muscles lengthen. If this is confusing, picture the spine of a book - when the book is opened the outside edge of the binding contracts while the other edge lengthens and visa versa. This inverse relationship is true for all muscle actions and is the key to analyzing movement.

Turnout, although often used in dance as a noun or a position, would more appropriately be considered an action, a verb. Outwardly rotating the hips requires continual action within the body even when the rotation is held or maintained. The work does not stop once the position has been attained because maintaining turnout is not what the body is designed for.

Turnout does not occur from anywhere other than the hip. A false turnout can be achieved by pronating the tarsus (rolling in) to create the illusion of a wider turnout than is being achieved by the hips alone. This causes a twisting in the knee, a joint which is only designed to extend and flex in the sagittal plane, and this usually leads to misalignment of the pelvis, which actually reduces outward rotation. False turnout also creates the potential for a myriad of injuries, as we'll discuss in Part II.

How To Recognize Proper/Improper Turnout

There are some simple visual cues that teachers and students can look for that indicate if turnout is being executed properly and without force. First of all, if someone is bending their knees (no matter how slightly), turning out, and then lengthening the legs, they are very clearly forcing their turnout. If you try this, you'll see (and feel) that the feet are rolling toward the big toe (pronating) to maintain this position. When you hear teachers say "knees over toes," they are asking you to properly align the turnout of your legs and avoid pronation both in standing and in plié. When the legs are opened without force and turnout is supported with the deep rotators, iliopsoas, and abdominals, one should be able to trace a line directly from the hip, through the center of the knee, and to a point between the second and third toe of the foot. A neutral or properly aligned pelvis (with the sitz bones pointing downward) is a good indicator as well because when the turnout is forced, generally the pelvis will tilt, creating a swayed back.

Dance instructors looking for indication of false turnout will expect to see the feet roll in, the pelvis tilt, and the knees and toes pointing a different direction than the center of the hip joint indicates. When a dancer is forcing turnout beyond their physical capabilities, tension will appear in the buttocks and probably other areas of the body such as the shoulders or neck. A dancer who consistently performs with false or forced rotation in the hips will eventually complain of sciatic, knee, foot, and/or back pain. Therefore, if a dancer is having any of these problems it is always a good idea to pay special attention to their turnout and alignment while dancing.

Nature vs. Nurture

Almost everyone "afflicted" with what he/she considers a limited degree of turnout has at one time found solace in the idea that, for some, the degree of turnout is limited by the unchangeable structure of the body and not for lack of trying. It is true that some have a narrow sacrum which allows for more efficient locomotion overall. Men have a narrower sacrum than women, giving them the potential for more impressive jumping skills. Of course the width of this area varies among women as well. But, before you begin to think that having a narrow pelvis is ideal, some have observed that this narrow pelvis often is paired with a forward facing acetabulum. This facing results in, you guessed it, a lesser degree in outward rotation than those with a side-facing hip socket. The depth of the acetabulum can also affect turnout. A shallow hip socket allows for higher degrees of both outward and inward rotation in the hip than does a deeper hip socket.

Aside from these natural limitations, turnout is only hindered by problems in how we have nurtured (or not nurtured) the muscles and tissues surrounding the hip. There are three ways in which a dancer can nurture their ability to turnout and to actively maintain that turnout during movement: Awareness, Release, and Strengthen Without Tension. And we will learn more about these in Part II!

Today I get to share with you the aftermath of my surgery. Apart from being the most physically painful thing I have ever experienced, the surgery went well, and following my latest follow-up visit, I am now sporting a lovely black, signable, cast which allows for some mobility in my fingers. The mobility is somewhat lessened by the fact that I am still regaining feeling and flexibility in the afore mentioned phalanges due to the nerve that I stretched during my accident. Below are the before and after surgery pictures.

Remember my earlier post complaining about my lack of free time? Well today, I am presented with an interesting complication to my theory. I have a midterm review session at 3 and I had a lab until 12, so I don't have to go to my internship today. Also due to Saint Christopher Columbus, who never did a bad thing in his life, I have no internship on Monday. And so now I have plenty of free time and I am also bored as shit. I've already caught up on all my tv for this week and I refuse to actually do work, so I'm just killing time blogging. Maybe this means that I actually need to be busy, which I already kind of knew. But anyway, seeing that I have a midterm this week, I guess this free time couldn't have come at a better time. God bless Christopher Columbus.

Also-- this week's episode of Bones was pretty religious centric. A pastor of a small church was murdered while swimming, etc, etc. Anyway, at the end of the episode, Booth and Bones are listening to a really moving sermon being told by the son of the murder victim and Bones isn't buying it. Booth says something moving and introspective, like "this case has taught me blardy-blar about life and spirituality and love, etc." and Bones is like, "Well I learned to always go swimming with a partner."

LOVE IT.

My Show doesn't like happy endings.
Achja: DER STAATSANWALT WAR DHARMA & GREG-PETE!!!!!
