If you're looking for an LCD TV comparison, you're probably already in love with the idea of hanging a flat screen TV on your wall. It's really amazing how technology has progressed to the point where you can hang a big screen TV on your wall, then sit back and enjoy a fantastic HDTV picture of your favorite TV shows or sporting events.

Even more amazing is that as pictures have improved by leaps and bounds, the TVs have gotten thinner, and prices have plummeted. You know that any TV you choose is bound to net you a superb picture and slim form factor.

That being said, you know all the LCD TVs out there can't be the same, can they? Surely there must be some differences, right? Well, yes there are. There are a few things that some TVs do better than others and when making an LCD TV comparison, you should know how to find the differences. Although LCD TV prices have declined substantially in recent years, you want to be sure you're getting the most TV for your money, and the best one for your particular application.

One of the first things to think about is the physical size of the set. If it wasn't so common it would be funny, but people will often make or buy a cabinet, then try to find a TV to fit in the space allocated. Many times they're thwarted form going up to the next larger sized TV because one of the cabinet dimensions is an inch or so too small.

Take the time to choose your TV first, if you have the opportunity. This will also prevent you from designing or buying a cabinet for a particular TV, only to find it's been discontinued when it comes time to buy the TV.

The next thing is to look at some of the new LCD TVs with thin bezels. For example, this can allow you to fit a 40" TV where only a 37" set would fit before. Something to be aware of is that sometimes these extra thin bezel LCD TVs are deeper than their normal beveled cousins. If you're putting your new TV in a cabinet, this may not be a concern to you, but the extra 2" - 3" may make a big difference if you're hanging the set on a wall.

If the TV will fit where you'd like to put it, a check on picture quality is in order. After all your buying a new TV to watch it, and there are some ways you can compare the picture quality to determine which set has a better picture.

One problem with just looking at a set on the showroom floor is that rarely are all the TVs correctly adjusted for the best picture. Often they're shipped and set up in what the industry terms "torch mode". This is slang for having the settings adjusted to take advantage of most customer's preference for the brightest TV they see. If there are 10 TVs lined up, they'll gravitate toward the brightest one. In many cases the brightest TV is not the one with the best picture, especially if it has been adjusted to look artificially bright.

Most LCD TVs, especially 1080p sets, have more than enough brightness for any viewing situation, save putting the set in direct sunlight, but no brightness or contrast adjustment will save you there. The point is that looking at a TV in the showroom will often not provide you with an accurate representation of the set's available picture quality.

When shopping for an LCD TV, a 120Hz refresh rate is one feature that has gone a long way toward eliminating the motion artifact problems that used to be so prevalent in LCD televisions. It is common on most manufacturer's better LCD sets now and is known by many trade names.

Sharp has no trade name for their sets with the 120Hz feature, calling it just "120Hz frame rate conversion", Toshiba uses the moniker "ClearFrame™", Mitsubishi prefers "Smooth 120Hz™", and Sony's marketing department came up with "Motionflow™ 120Hz". It all means basically the same thing. Your LCD with this technology will look much better on fast moving images, like sports and scrolling text, than TVs without it.

If you're looking at one of the newest TVs, make sure they have plenty of inputs for connecting your BluRay player, cable box or satellite receiver, computer, or digital camcorder. In many instances, you will connect everything up to your surround sound receiver, then run a single cable to your TV.

For those not using a surround receiver, having plenty of inputs becomes vitally important. Make sure you have art least 3 HDMI inputs so you can get the best possible picture from HD digital video sources. A couple of component video inputs for older sources such as DVD players is a good idea as well.

Most new TVs have a digital tuner built in so you can connect an HDTV antenna and pick up signals broadcast over the air. Some TVs have what's called a QUAM tuner. This will allow you to get unencrypted digital cable programming. In many cases the cable company will broadcast local channels in full HDTV resolution "in the clear". That means they are not encrypted and you can watch them with no cable box, just the QUAM tuner built into your TV.

This will give some things to look for when comparing new LCD TVs. Whatever TV you decide to buy, you will get many years of enjoyment from your new set.

Aber dennoch habe ich bei den letzten Scheiben auch schnell feststellen müssen, dass viele Blu-Rays mal schnell auf den Markt mussten und nicht die Zeit war, sie mit entsprechendem Zusatzmaterial zu arrangieren. Da kommt schon mal ein Film völlig mutterseelenallein auf der Scheibe mit der doch sooo großen Speicherkapazität daher. Ich kann nur hoffen, dass da wenigstens innerhalb kürzester Zeit der Umfang einer handelsüblichen DVD mit dem ganzen Zusatzmaterial Standard wird ... mal sehen wann dann das Blu-Ray Profil 2.0 seinen Einfluss im breiten Markt geltend machen kann.
Manchmal merkt man auch, dass die Blu-Ray noch im Anfangsstadium ist und High Definition nicht zwangsweise für gute Qualität steht. Bei einer DVD hat man nicht so deutlich gesehen, wenn beim Aufbereiten des Bildmaterials nicht anständig gearbeitet wurde. Nun bei Blu-Ray merkt man das sehr viel schneller, weil man durch den Vergleich mit wirklich guten Titeln und dem dort erreichten Bild die schlechten fast auf den ersten Blick von Sessel erkennen kann. Aber zum Glück ist sie dann auch noch besser als die DVD ;-)

Wenn nun noch der HD-Sound in Deutsch auch noch Standard wird, dann kann man davon sprechen dass die Blu-Ray auch ihrem Anspruch zumindest im Ansatz gerecht wird ... Aber ich will nicht gleich Wunder erwarten von der Filmindustrie ;-)

Blu-ray has almost gotten its act together. After putting the stake in the heart of HD DVD, prospective buyers have had to deal with confusing Blu-ray profiles, varying audio-decoding capabilities, and standalone players with prices above $500. As we head into the 2008 holiday season, however, we're finally starting to see fully mature Profile 2.0 players with high-resolution audio decoding at prices that don't exceed the cost of theSony PlayStation 3.

The Panasonic DMP-BD55 is a perfect example, hitting almost all the essential features we look for and pairing those up with pristine image quality. That being said, Panasonic also offers the cheaper DMP-BD35, which (from what Panasonic engineers have told us), will offer all the same features and identical video performance--with the exception of the 7.1 analog outputs and analog-audio enhancements. As good as the DMP-BD55 is, unless you intend to use the analog outputs on your Blu-ray player, go with the less expensive DMP-BD35.

Design
The DMP-BD55's exterior design has been updated significantly. Compared with its predecessor, the DMP-BD50, the DMP-BD55 has a slimmer, sleeker look--although its "vibration-reducing feet" cause it to be nearly as tall as the DMP-BD50. Gone is the large, clunky, flip-down panel from the DMP-BD50--replaced instead by a DVD-like disc tray in the center of the unit. On the far left is the LCD screen, and on the far right a blue indicator light for the SD-card slot. We appreciated that the SD-card light could be completely turned off; the LCD display, for its part, can be dimmed, but not turned off completely. Also on the right is the flip-down panel, and underneath you'll find the actual SD-card slot itself and a few playback controls--although no chapter forward/backward. In all, we like the sleeker redesign

The remote is virtually unchanged from previous designs. The center is dominated by big, blue playback buttons, including chapter skip and fast-forward/rewind. Below is a large directional pad, surrounded by other important buttons for disc menus, pop-up menus, and a general display button. Overall, it's fairly well laid-out and easy to use, and the remote control can also control a TV and an audiovisual receiver, if programmed to do so.

Features
Panasonic's DMP-BD50 was the first standalone Blu-ray player to offer Profile 2.0 support, and the DMP-BD55 is also compliant. This means it's capable of accessing Internet-enabled features (often referred to as "BD-Live" features) available on some movies, such as Rambo and Walk Hard. To access the features, you'll need to have the DMP-BD55 connected to the Internet via its Ethernet port, as well as have an SD card in the front panel slot--we would have liked to see Panasonic offer built-in memory as another step-up from the DMP-BD35. So far, BD-Live features have been pretty underwhelming, but we expect the content to improve as more compliant players hit the market and disc makers get a handle on the new technology. We will note that the DMP-BD55 still offers a significantly inferior experience to the PS3 on these interactive features--the PS3 is just faster, and its built-in hard drive is more convenient.

We were happy to see the DMP-BD55 handled nonanamorphic wide-screen DVDs correctly. While there's no manual setting, we popped in an older version of Carlito's Way and the DMP-BD55 automatically detected the aspect ratio and properly displayed the movie. Ich habe nun den Yamaha BD-S2900 erworben, weil ich mir bei den Günstigen einerseits nicht so einig war, ob die in allen bereichen und ausreichendes Ergebnis erzielen - Bild Bluray, Ton in HD und DVD-Wiedergabe und weil ich mir im teureren Segment bei dem Transporterkonzept des Denon 2500BT nicht sicher war, ob dies das richtige für mich ist. Und wie fühle ich mich nun, so als Bluray-Nutzer: Fantastisch!

Für alle die sich mit dem Gedanken tragen auch einzusteigen und nicht wissen was es genau werden soll, kommen hier meine Eindrücke von dem Yamaha BD-S2900, vor allem weil es im Netz quasi nichts dazu gibt und so ziemlich kein Händler ihn liefern kann. Da fällt es sonst sehr schwer sich über den Player genauer zu informieren.
Zuerst einmal, der Player ist komplett aus Metall inkl. der Laufwerksklappe! Die einzigen Plastikteile könnten die Knöpfe sein, das konnte ich vom Feeling her nicht so direkt einschätzen.
Das Laufwerk an sich ist nicht von der massiven Sorte, sondern aus der Fraktion Plastik und etwas wackelig.
Das Display ist aus meinen 4m Entfernung ohne Probleme zu erkennen. Während des Filmbetriebes zeigt das Display nur die bereits zurückgelegte Laufzeit an und eine Disc zum Zeichen dafür, dass er abspielt. Ansonsten kann man beim Einlesen ein READ lesen, beim Stoppen ein STOP, wenn er die Scheibe identifiziert hat und das abspielen vorbereitet liest man READ und wenn man sich im Disc-Menü befindet sagt er auch PLAY. Also eher nicht das gesprächige Display, aber mich prsönlich interessiert das eh nicht, ich habe das Display eh nie großartig benutzt.
Der SD-Kartenslot befindet sich etwas rechts ab von der Mitte der Front, weil sich dort die obligatorische blaue Leuchte befindet. Für alle Heimkino-Fans sei gesagt, sie lässt sich im Menü auch dauerhaft ausschalten. Das Display ist ebenso in 3 Helligkeitsstufen zu dimmen. Wie sehr sich das im abgedunkelten Raum bemerkbar macht habe ich nicht getestet, weil ich auch keiner bin den eine normale Displaybeleuchtung beim Film stört.
Die Ausgänge hinten sind soweit bekannt von den Spezifikationen: 5.1 Analog Out, Componet-Out, S-Video Out, Serielle Schnittstelle, Optical Out, HDMI Out und extra Remote Control In und Out Anschlüsse. Das war es. Ausser HDMI habe ich da noch nichts benutzt, was ich wohl auch nicht werde.
So viel zum Äusseren. Er macht einen wertigen Eindruck, hat ein angenehmes Gewicht und ist in sofern nicht zu vergleichen mit den üblichen günstigeren Leichtgewichten.
Die Lautstärke des Laufwerks ist absolut positiv! Nachdem Einlegen der Scheibe und direkt beim ersten Einlesen danach hört es man es schon, aber nach der Einlesephase hat sich das gelegt und während des Betriebes, auch bei extrem leisen und total stillen Filmphasen, ist absolut nichts zu hören!
Jetzt ein bisschen zu den Sachen, die mir vom Setup her aufgefallen sind. Es gibt eine Funktion, die nach dem Einlegen der Scheibe direkt weiter zum Film geht und das Disc-Menü direkt umgeht. Die kann man ein- und ausschalten. IchfFinde des sehr angenehm, denn der Rest auf den DVDs hat mich bisher nie interessiert. Da man im Menü auch die primäre Sprache und die gewünschten Untertitel einstellen kann, bekommt man auch immer das passende serviert. Sollte das dennoch mal nicht passen, dann kann man mit der Fernbedienung per Audio-Taste einfrig durchschalten bis man die gewünschte Tonspur gefunden hat.
Kommen wir nun zur Einlesezeit. Ich habe 3 Bluray-Filme aktuell getestet, alle mit der Funktion direkt bis zum Film durchzuspringen:

• The day after Tomorrow - 68 Sekunden
• Die fremde in Dir - 37 Sekunden
• Das Beste kommt zum Schluß - 33 Sekunden

Für mich hält ich das gefühlt aber absolut in Grenzen, denn wenn man eh erst das Knöpfchen drückt, sich dann noch hinsetzt, das Getränk bereit stellt, die Knabbereien auf den Schoß nimmt ... dann ist das eine gute Pause. Und wenn man die Direktstart-Funktion benutzt, dann hat man ja auch kein Disc-Menü was den Start des Films solange hinauszögert bis man bereit ist. Aber die Startzeit hängt echt davon ab, wie die Studios die Disc gemacht haben. Bei "The Day after Tomorrow" hat der noch einen Ladebildschirm am Ende der Einlesephase, den ich mit anderen Filmen noch nicht herzaubern konnte.
Und wie ist es mit der Bildqualität? Also ich hatte vorher noch keinen Player dieser Art zu Hause, bin also hart umgestiegen von DVD hierhin. Die Bildqualität ist schon absolut klasse. Sehr scharf, je nach Bild und Einstellung kommt es manchmal sogar räumlich und absolut plastisch rüber. Das hängt aber auch, wie ich merken musste, extrem vom Film ab. Bei einem hat man öfter diese räumlichen Eindrücke, manch anderer lässt dieses Gefühl gar nicht aufkommen. Also sollte man auch hier von den Erwartungen her die Kirche im Dorf lassen, es kommt auch bei den Dingen sehr auf das Ausgangsmaterial an.
Was macht er mit DVDs? Ich habe zuvor nie einen der DVD-Player aus dem hochpreisigen Segment besessen, kann also nur den Vergleich zu einem Samsung DVD-Player der Upsclaing-Fraktion in der 100 Euro Rubrik anstellen. Im Verleich zu einem solchen Player macht er ein ausgewogeneres, strahlenderes Bild. Das Bild ist gegenüber dem alten weniger "Verwaschen" - also etwas schärfer-, auch wenn der schon ein für mich völlig akzeptables Bild gemacht hat. Es ist mit dem Neuen etwas präziser, allerdings hat er an den Objektkanten leichte Treppchenbildung. Das sieht man aber natürlich nur wenn man direkt vor dem TV steht, das ist bei normalen Entfernungen nie und nimmer wahrzunehmen. Die Farben werden besser dargestellt und der Ton ist auch um einiges besser. Der kommt viel voluminöser, ausgewogener und schöner rüber als mit dem genannten DVD-Player. Für jeden der nicht in der hohen Region der DVD-Player aktuell weilt, stellt der Umstieg also kein Problem dar, es kann sogar ein Fortschritt sein.

Also ohne Vergleich zu einem der günstigeren Player kann ich sagen, dass er sich insgesamt gelohnt hat. Das Bild ist Top, der Ton auch, bei DVDs sogar deutlich besser als bei dem alten DVD-Player und bisher habe ich keine Fehler/Mängel feststellen können.

Das Film schauen und vor allem hören macht jetzt in der Tat viel viel mehr Spaß!

Om Malik's not sure there's a spot available in the market for a physical replacement for CDs, as people want fewer thingies to collect and manage.  We'll see.  Is the market in other geographic regions?

The music industry is irreversibly racing down a virtual path.  For the same reasons, the hype over BluRay vs. HD DVD was vastly overblown, because movies are moving to electronic distribution.

To quote Homecinema choice

The Lord Of The Rings trilogy are the movies most film fans want to see released in high definition, according to a survey conducted by TDK. Peter Jackson’s epic beat out a list of Oscar winning classics, including Ben Hur and Casablanca.

The Rings trilogy has had HD outings already on Sky and C4HD, but has yet to be released on Blu-ray.

The research was carried out to celebrate the arrival in London’s Covent Garden of TDK’s Life on Record’s trailer, a mobile gallery devoted to technology and media with a focus on hi-definition.

If you want to visit though you’ll need to be quick; it’s only parked in Covent Garden until Tuesday16 September as part of a 12 month European tour.

According to TDK’s survey, the top five films consumers believe will look best on Blu-ray are:

Quando eu pensava que nunca mais iria ver minhas fitas VHS, me surgiu uma luz no final do túnel: Sharp Aquos BD-HDv22. (A Sharp ainda existia, é?)

Esse íncrivel aparelho é um VCR (Video Cassete Recorder) com Leitor e Gravador de BluRay. Sério, é novidade mesmo e certamente não é um Betamax 2 HDDVD da vida, mas já quebra um galho para quem tem trocentas fitas de vídeo (sim, lembram delas?).

É, eu costumava gravar coisas nelas e reassistir até o meu videocassete estragar de vez. O único problema é que você vai precisar desenbolsar US$ 1.100 por esse monstrengo. Ah, sem contar o fato de você precisar de discos BluRay para gravar e leitores BluRay para ler isso em seu computador.

Espero que ele não converta 480i para 1080p... que não vai ficar bom, e ainda por cima vai comer muito mais espaço...

Falando sério agora, eu compraria um desses se morasse lá fora. Para mim é muito útil.

The Playstation 4 should be made available in the next three to five years. During that time, Sony will need to work on getting Blu-ray into more homes and try to supplant DVD as the leader in the media space.

But how will it do that? The main advantage DVD still enjoys is that it's mobile and ubiquitous.

It took DVD almost a decade to reach that kind of saturation and Blu-ray simply doesn't have that much time. With companies like Apple, Amazon, Netflix, and others quickly moving towards a home environment that doesn't require a disc, but rather a download or streaming service, Blu-ray can't compete.

It's becoming easier and easier to stream movies from your computer to your HDTV. A Roku Netflix box means Blu-ray isn't even needed anymore, and cable companies offer VOD service for those that don't feel like popping a DVD into the player. And as broadband speeds increase making HD downloads more relevant, Blu-ray finds itself squeezed out by the past and the future.

And all the while, Sony is left to make the decision of whether or not it wants to tie its next video game console to an irrelevant format.

A délután folyamán benéztem, az xpress.hu-ra, tegnap adtam le náluk rendelést, kíváncsi voltam mi az ábra. Felvették, sőt már úton is a csomag, nagyszerű. Körülnéztem és meglepve tapasztaltam, hogy karácsonyra újabb kiadó lép be a bluray piacra, ennek megfelelően alámennek a Sony által diktált kiskereskedelmi ár alá. Ennek is megörültem, a kínálatnak meg végképp. Megint elfogy a pénzem. :)

És jön a komolyság is, Jack is back. Végre már...

Le kellett mondanom az esti edzést, mert azt hiszem megbetegedtem. Szedem itt zsákszámra a vitaminokat, több mint 2 hónapja, és erre tessék, de gondolom a múlt hét szombati vacsora a teraszon betett nekem nem is kicsit. Mindenesetre torokfájással kezdtem a napot, és még nem tudom, hogyan végzem, mert érzem, hogy talán lázam is van. No nem baj, tea, és minden egyéb, a betegség elleni harchoz szükséges már be van készítve, estére a kikúrálásom a feladat. Stephen King's The Mist (R) DVD and Blu-ray release

You know it's getting close to Halloween when they start dragging out the Stephen King movies. My formula for King adaptations? Quality Of Book/Quality Of Director + Age Of Source Material = Quality Of Film. Case in point: The Shining was a good book. Stanley Kubrick was brilliant. Source material was one of King's early books. The Shining is worth seeing. In this case, the book was merely okay, Frank Darabont is slightly better than competent, and it's not King's REALLY old stuff. Think I'll skip it. Maybe a rental if I get bored.

1408 (PG-13) New To Blu-ray

Another Stephen King adaptation. Loved the novella, actually saw this film. Not bad... not bad at all. Preferred the ending in the book, but I'd say this is worth a rent. Certainly don't PURCHASE it, that would be ridiculous.

Hulk (PG-13) New To Blu-ray

This is the 2003 Ang Lee 'Hulk' with Eric Bana, not the new one with Ed Norton. For all the hate this film received, I actually really liked it. I'll be picking it up. How could you pass up an opportunity to see Hulk repeatedly punch a giant irradiated dog in the crotch... in glorious HD?

Risky Business (R) New To Blu-ray

A crazy Scientologist dancing in his underwear, and someone needs to give Rebecca De Mornay a box of donuts. This I need to see in HD? I think not.

Yesterday I was blessed with the opportunity of watching art at its best with this movie, The Fall. My BluRay movie experience has been slightly above Par so far, at nobodies fault but my own. I haven't been doing a very good job of researching new releases. IGN did an excellent job of selling this as nothing less than exquisite in their Review, and I just had to be the judge of that statement. And that statement was still undercutting the beauty and originality this movie brings to the table. I refuse to ruin this movie for anybody, but know you will remember the day you watched The Fall. If you own a Blu-ray Player, a HDTV and haven't seen this movie you've wasted ur money.

I saw this movie in the theaters and thought it was great.  Seeing it in Bluray, it was just as good as I remembered.  The plot isn’t anything amazing, but the fight scenes are.  As the first teaming of Jackie Chan and Jet Li, the two show off their skills.  Even the actor that plays the lead character Jason, who was also the lead in Sky High, has some skill in martial arts.  He is quite good as are the good and bad female leads.  The movie moves along at a fun pace.  A nice mix of comedy and action this is a family friendly film that anyone can enjoy.  The backdrop of China is breathtaking, and the high def, just ads to the stunning visuals of the movie.  Are there better Jackie Chan and Jet Li movies?  Most definitely.  But this is by no means a poor showing of either actor.  It’s meant to be fun and it is. 

Extras: I don’t normally watch extras but this Bluray had some interesting ones.  The blooper real wasn’t really that funny.  Jackie and Jet would good around a little but I think the other actors were a little intimidated and didn’t goof around unless their seniors did.  There were about 5 mini featurettes.  I enjoyed the ones that focused on the female leads and on the genesis of the story itself.  Hearing how the writer/director created the idea from existing Chinese lore, was very interesting.  Although the lack of commentary by both Jackie and Jet anywhere on the movie would be a downside to those that enjoy behind the scenes info.

Recommendation:  I am a huge Jackie Chan fan.  I have most of his movies and within that gamut this is one of his better ones.  It is a fun, movie with good fight scenes, and amazing locals.  But martial art films in general and kid friendly one in specific are an acquired taste. So rent it.  If you are a real fan of the genre or of Jackie Chan/Jet Li, then buy it without a doubt.  But for the casual watcher head to your video store or hit Netflix. (thanks for the spelling correction on Netflix, mindless troll, appreciate you writing something useful for a change).
