Black Rebel Motorcycle Club!

They just played an amazing -- and I do fucking mean amazing -- two hour and fifteen minute set at Irving Plaza tonight. They really speak to the people (no, they don't talk much, but you know what I mean). God, a man with soul is all I'm looking for. He can be missing teeth, penniless and own only one pair of jeans. Just give me a man with soul, and it can't hurt if he loves those rhythm and blues. Soul is backbone strengthening, passion igniting, conviction rumbling in your bowels, all wrapped up in a brown paper package of ease and cool. Sure, addiction might be close in tow, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there!

They played a fantastic set of the old, the new(er), the frequent, the infrequent, b-sides, and a cover of Chelsea Hotel in New York City!

God bless Black Rebel Motorcycle Club! Than you for being unique, generous, uncompromising and sexy. There are good men out there!

Good start, cool name. Terrific single too (their third, or thereabouts), that suggested a searing balls-out rock pedigree, all full-throttle rhythm and piled-on guitars. I first heard about them when Charlatan Tim Burgess was bigging up this record on some radio show, and it could almost pass for one of his own – with Rob Levon Been’s sub-Jagger sneer a ringer for Burgess’s Manc-turned-Yank lip-curl – albeit a little more cranked-up than your standard Charlatans blues-pop.

It flattered to deceive. ‘Spread Your Love’, their next foray into the UK Top 30, sounded like ‘Spirit In The Sky’ and tepid albums gave way to a grasp at serious cred with third long-player Howl, an nth-generation tilt at rootsy blues. Who needs it?

The tidal wave of gee-tar prompted Junior to sling on the plastic Strat and rumble along with BRMC. Finding the jarring piano button on her axe, she was then moved to delve into the toy box for the pink keyboard, and the ensuing cacophony had Junior 2 looking aghast. Pure-spun rock’n’roll. It sounded like some godawful mash-up – appropriate in 2001, when the world and his wife were at it.

Reminds me - I must be the only man alive who doesn’t own 2 Many DJs’ As Heard On Radio Soulwax. Or, entirely unrelated, Röyksopp’s Melody A.M. Or Damien Rice’s O. Or Nevermind.

Rating: 2/5

It's easy to get an idea of what to expect from The Blakes by citing their apparent influences: early Strokes in the playful kick of 'Modern Man', 'Country Girl'-mode Primal Scream in the bluesy 'Magoo', and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in the loose, grungy sway of upcoming single 'Don't Want That Now'. And the problem with that is that none of the above are doing anything remotely exciting these days, and neither are The Blakes. The Seattle trio sound like they've been kept in storage since 2001, and now arrive blinking in the glare of an indie scene that's taken a few more interesting turns than they're capable of. Interest is piqued by the darker, detuned guitars of 'Vampire', or the wall-of-sound effect in 'Streets', but a combination of weak songwriting, uninspiring musicianship and generic production values equates to a debut that's already behind the times.

The Blakes is out on 4 Aug via Strange Addiction.

I wasn't much of a fan of Black Oak Arkansas, I enjoy but don't need the Black Keys, and the Black Crowes leave me cold. Black Sabbath? Please. Still, I'm ready for a show in basic black. How 'bout a triple bill of The Black Angels, Black Mountain, and BRMC? The Black Angels would probably have to go first to warm up the crowd, since they're less well known than Black Mountain or the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Plus, they'd set the proper mood, which is to say, trance.

Austinites, they do not come from the same musical neighborhood as Flaco Jimenez. It's nice to know that after Roky Erickson, the words "Texas" and "psychedelia" don't automatically lead to discussions about Tex Watson. I think what really got me about these guys was "Bloodhounds on My Trail," which is mesmerizing. Think of "Hellhound On My Trail" done by a supergroup starring Lydia Lunch, John Fogerty, and Peter Green.

I'm not just trying to be clever about the links to Black Mountain and BRMC -- these guys are jacked into the same amps both those disparate, not necessarily kindred, but nonetheless spiritually linked bands play. Their debut album "Passover" brought comparisons to the Velvet Underground, Galaxy 500, the Gun Club, and Led Zep. Can't go wrong with those references thrown in the blender. Their second album, "Directions To See A Ghost," adds the Fall's descending guitar lines to the BRMC dynamic, and cops song structures from "Astronomy Domine"-era Floyd. Alex Maas has this weirdly androgynous voice, and when the levee breaks, he slightly drowns in Robert Plant's lower registers.

Missed them at the Rock and Roll Hotel, where I think they opened for the Warlocks -- more kindred spirits. When John Cale wrote "The Black Angel's Death Song," who knew that someday these guys would catch its wind?

Who are the most influential bands and artists in the history of rock? Well, start with The Beatles

Who are the most influential bands and artists in the history of rock? Well, start with The Beatles and Elvis, I guess, and for good reason. Chuck Berry, Little Richard, The Stones, of course, The Who and David Bowie. The big names. All of them signed their names on our culture with a fat permanent marker, and in doing so insured that just about all future artists would have to navigate their legacies in one way or another.

The funny thing, though, is just how influential some far, far lesser known artists became. Many people have heard of Velvet Underground, although comparatively few have actually listened to them, but if you factor VU's overwhelming influence out of our collective cultural history would we have had Bauhaus, Echo & the Bunnymen, Lenny Kravitz, Sonic Youth, Jesus & Mary Chain (and subsequently Black Rebel Motorcycle Club), Galaxie 500 (and the army of bands that followed their lead) and REM?

How about Big Star? I'd wager that not many contemporary listeners have even heard the name, but their influence on a generation of guitar pop musicians is just about impossible to calculate. Put it this way - if you hopped in a time machine, went back to Memphis in the early '50s and erased Alex Chilton from the ranks of the living, when you got back to 2008 almost nothing would sound the way it did before you left.

Influence is a funny thing. Huge artists can leave almost no footprint for future acts to follow and relatively obscure bands can change the audial landscape forever. Which leads me to another band that a lot of people these days don't know: Joy Division. Sure, everybody's heard New Order, which in 1987 released Substance, arguably the greatest dance album ever. But before New Order was Joy Division, which featured the guys in New Order plus their creative leader, Ian Curtis. JD was interested in expanding the sound of punk, and it embraced a range of dark, melancholy tones that served to comment on the bleakness of European industrial life in the '70s.

In May of 1980 Curtis committed suicide. There's no way of knowing how big Joy Division might have been commercially, and until the last couple of years I couldn't have imagined how great their artistic influence would be. But all of a sudden, over 25 years later, there's been an explosion of new acts that are clearly beholden to Curtis' brooding legacy of despair. Interpol and The Killers are easily the best of the lot (The Killers cover "Shadowplay" live and on their recent B-Sides collection), and if they were the only examples we could dismiss the Joy Division Effect easily enough. But the truth is that we're seeing a significant movement within "indie" rock that simply wouldn't exist without the influence of band that barely lived long enough to get off the ground and that died before Reagan was elected.

So today, in our inaugural TunesDay, we pay tribute to all those bands out there - the JDs, the VUs, and the Big Stars - whose vision exerted an impact on the world of music that far exceeded their individual commercial successes. Here's Joy Division with their video for "Love Will Tear Us Apart."

Here Interpol performs "Slow Hands."

The Killers' reverence for JD is evident in this homage.

She Wants Revenge is a lot of fun, but at times they're almost a tribute band.

Then there's Editors, whose An End Has A Start was one of my Gold Award CDs for last year.

And The Mary Onettes...

And finally, "1981" by The Flaws.

We'll conclude with a Rock 101 exam question: Enduring artistic influence is better than commerical success or critical acclaim. Discuss.

Titolo: Berlin
Autore: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Album: Baby 81 (2007)

All'inizio erano The Elements. Da lì a capolavori come Generation (nel successivo LP Take them on, On your Own), il passo è stato breve.

K

A

Briten-Indie: The Enemy, The Wombats, The Subways, The Pigeon Detectives, The Kooks und äääähm die Kaiser Chiefs. Vornehmlich auf der blauen Bühne anzuschauen.

C

E

F

Flunkyball: Beliebteste Kombination aus Sport und Trinkspiel auf dem Campingplatz. Wird bestimmt bald olympisch. >>> weiterlesen!!!!

Yesterday, I went to see the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at Paradiso, Amsterdam. It was the first time I'd ever been at a concert, and I felt a bit out of place at first. I had no clue what to expect. The people seemed nice enough, a bit of a hipster crowd, as I expected. No goths, thank god (no offence). The venue wasn't as big as I expected, it was very cozy. The Brothers Movement opened the show. They sounded a lot like BRMC and they were gone after half an hour or so. Didn't get much of an impression. After that, the floor started filling up and it was starting to get crowded, but not uncomfortably crowded by any means. When Peter and Robert showed up on stage, it suddenly got very, very REAL. I was actually SEEING them, not indirectly on tv or computer, but they were just THERE, being as real as can be. And that's when I really started to enjoy myself there. They played for two-and-half hours in total, and their level of commitment to the crowd was aweinspiring. I've heard that they played another eight songs after the show. Wish I could've been there, but it was getting very late for a schoolnight. They played a handful of acoustic songs during the show, and it was enough to make me happy. I'm more into their Howl/acoustic stuff than anything else. All in all, it was an amazing (first) concert experience and I'm thankful to my sister for pushing me to get those tickets. The only thing I regret is having to face the morning after, which I delayed as long as I could. My memories of the show resemble a dream more than anything. I know that I was there, but it feels so far away already. I've never been a huge BRMC fan, just a casual one. Last night definitly sparked something up for me and I love Rob and Pete a lot more than I had before. That's all I have to say =).

Also, some people seem to think Black Rebel Motorcycle club is an embarassing name for a band. I couldn't disagree more. I would never feel any shame in saying **I love BRMC <3<3**.

Hey everybody that reads this,
I just had dinner with Rob and Pete and, well, I'm not in the band anymore. They are going into rehearsals tomorrow with Leah, she just finished touring with The Raveonettes and is super nice and cool. They presented it to me like they need a break, I took it as I am fired again and to be honest with you I respect their decision. I don't make it easy for them, I hope to be able to play with them again in the future as a reunion as there is really no bad feeling other than we all wanna be happy and right now we are not. Maybe playing drums for BRMC all the time is not my calling and there is something else I'm supposed to do. We will see. I’m sorry to all the fans and know that the drums are in good hands with Leah. Find her at http://www.myspace.com/deadcombosound

My best
hope to see you soon.

Tuesday night, thanks to the always ear-to-the-scene Brent Davis, we checked out Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at a free show at Warehouse Live.

I've seen these guys many times over the last 2 years, and have to say they have become one of my favorite live acts. Those lights, that bass line, and Robert. :-)

In attendance was Brentabousko, David Cobb, Matthew, Mark Austin (aka MCA Photo), Rob, and even ran into MagsMac and the Barstool crew.

Good times, good times. I sure love me some BRMC.

These pics were all taken with my friggin' iPhone. Can't get over how great that camera is for shows.

p.s. promising to post more. life has been nutzo.

(This idea was totally stolen from my good buddy Jarrett over at the Dude Weekend blog, which he in turn had pilfered from The Onion's A/V Club website.)

From Jarrett: "For those not familiar with it, The Onion A/V Club has a feature called "Random Rules" where they get a musician or celebrity to set their mp3 players on random, play a bunch of tracks, and comment on whatever pops up. It's an interesting insight into their artistry, so in an attempt to feign both insight and artistry I propose we all do the same."

Duly noted.

1. The Radio Dept.-Deliverance

Clearly a holdover from the Pet Grief sessions, this cut appeared on last year's This Past Week e.p. There's something so utterly simplistic, effortless and derivative yet engaging about The Radio Dept.'s aesthetic. They're Swedish, and are on Labrador Records, featuring, pound for pound, one of the strongest label rosters in indie music. They're like the Rays this season; doing lots of little things right, playing small ball with the best of them, and occasionally juicing one out of the park.

2. Pulp-This Is Hardcore

File under "Sleaziest Songs Ever Written". Without doubt the most Scott Walker-indebted song Jarvis ever wrote. I have to be in a certain frame of mind to sit through the whole song, but when I do, all I can think about is how critics always bad-mouthed Jarvis's singing. He never utilized much range before this song, because most of Pulp's tunes didn't require it. But his vocals on This Is Hardcore are easily some of the most impassioned and expressive ever laid down on tape/hard disk during the Britpop era.

3. Mixtapes & Cellmates-Something Less Than Last Time

I don't recall how I found out about these guys. Popmatters, maybe? Anyway, my first exposure to them was their song 'Quiet', which has a weird Bright Eyes-meets-Dntel/Postal Service vibe. While unfortunately none of their albums have made it onto American record store racks, eMusic does have them available for download, and I highly recommend everything you can get your grubby little digital paws on.

4. The Charlatans (UK)-I Can't Even Be Bothered

Before they became fixtures of Cool Britannia-era Britpop known for epic keyboard-led jams, these guys were all about early-90s dance-rock. My abiding memory of this song in particular was how I let my friend Tom borrow a mix-tape of Charlatans tracks one Summer while we were in college, and how utterly sick he got of them as a result of only having that one tape in his car. Oh well. He can just consider it preemptive payback for making me eat at CiCi's pizza buffet over his bachelor party weekend.

5. Division of Laura Lee-The Truth Is Fucked

I'm not sure exactly what DOLL's politics are. My memory of this song and its parent album is sort of lost in the haze of that stretch back in the early 2000s when it seemed like everyone I knew (and myself) were in the thrall of garage-rock. I'm glad I held onto this one, though. While the vitriol of those bands is pretty much an interchangeable affectation, DOLL sort of presaged the mid-2000s trend of new new wave by infusing their garage-y inclinations with a darker, sinister post-punk edge. 'The Truth Is Fucked' has a killer groove that wouldn't sound out of place on the first Black Rebel Motorcycle Club album.

6. The Cardigans-Rise & Shine

There's not much to say about this one. Catchy pop tune sung by a frostily beautiful Swede? Sign me up. I will say this, though: I would not mind being lost in a strange country and running into Nina Persson, even if she sang to me instead of providing good directions.

7. Wye Oak-Regret

I just found out about this great duo from right here in Baltimore a couple months ago. Sort of a sunnier version of Giant Drag without all the grunge-y mid-90s-isms. 'Regret' is actually a gentle little folk ditty sung by drummer/keyboardist Andy Stack on Wye Oak's debut, If Children. The whole album is sort of a cross-section of all the best parts of indie-rock from the last 20 years. Pick it up!
